Cloverdale woman hopes simple story will inspire other acts of kindness

here was nothing unusual about Tuesday morning for Cloverdale’s Jen Temple – until she stopped for gas. “I saw a homeless man eating out of the garbage at the gas station” she posted on her Facebook page. Temple says she went inside the 7-Eleven on Fraser Highway and 160th Street and bought the man a sandwich. Another customer saw what was happening and also went inside and bought the man some food and a hot coffee. Jen Temple “The man looked at me and said, ‘I don’t have any money for this,’” she said, adding she told the man it was a gift. “A tear rolled down his cheek and he said, ‘thank you’ and gave me a smile,” said Temple, asset manager at Cloverdale’s Hillcrest Village Shopping Centre. Temple told the Now she hopes the story will inspire other small acts of kindness. “It only takes one kind gesture to make someone feel special,” she said. “Even if just for one moment.”

Alanna Jones, 22, inspired gymnasts and judges alike on Sunday with an appearance at Surrey Invitational 2016, a competition hosted by Jones’ long-time club, the Surrey Gymnastic Society. Last August, a fall from a tree broke her neck. After months at Vancouver’s GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre, Jones is going home. See full story story on page 3. (Photo: GORD GOBLE)

Surrey won’t pull trigger on gun show Council concerned about handgun sales and security plans Amy Reid

CLOVERDALE — Surrey city council has shot down a permit for the second annual BC Rod and Gun Show, scheduled for April 15 to 17 at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds.
The issue, said Mayor Linda Hepner, is the sale of handguns and ammunition at the show and that RCMP haven’t yet had a chance to review a security plan. “We want a complete review,” said Hepner, adding she didn’t realize handguns would be sold at the show. “I don’t think that’s a necessary part of the show in Surrey at all,” she remarked. The next Surrey council meeting is scheduled for April 11, and seeing as the show is set to begin just four days later, Hepner said, “my guess is we’ll have to postpone that show.”

Show manager Steve Bednash said as far as he’s concerned, the show is a go. He said he’s “flabbergasted” because security wasn’t questioned last year and the event was incident-free. Bednash emphasized the show will get gun transactions off the street, into a safe environment, with police in attendance. “We’ll jump through any hoop the city wants us to,” Bednash said. “We’re serious about safety.” SEE FULL STORY ONLINE AT THENOWNEWSPAPER.COM
