Transit exclusion upsets the Nisga’a NEW AIYANSH - The president of the Nisga’a Lisims Government says he’s “dismayed” it wasn’t invited to the Nov. 24 regional symposium held in Smithers to discuss regional transportation.

In a release Dec. 2, Mitchell Stevens said a limit on those invited based on distance from Hwy16 didn’t make sense. The Nass Valley home of the Nisga’a is past the 75km limit set by meeting organizers.

“We feel it’s irresponsible to develop an action plan to resolve transportation issues in the north based on discussions from which we were completely excluded,” he said.

“We were dismayed to learn that the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) and the Province of BC would hold such a forum without a formal invitation to us.

to us to be an arbitrary criterion for an invitation to discuss transportation needs. It also seems illogical to have a policy with outcomes that suggest that if you are lucky enough to live within this radius, you have needs, but if you live farther away, you have absolutely none. Our needs are even greater.

“Families in our Nisga’a communities have been tragically affected by the Highway of Tears, and our people also face significant transportation barriers to needed services.

“The Nisga’a Villages and the NHVA, using their own resources and charging fees, have made some efforts to address this issue.

Not terminal for Alaskan project

PRINCE RUPERT - The bleak budgetary outlook for the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) will stand to have minimal immediate impacts for its Prince Rupert ferry terminal.

That’s the message parlayed by AMHS official Jeremy Woodrow when it was announced that the system is experiencing major budget restraints.

Reports that four of the AMHS’ 11 ferries will be laid up next summer, mixed with a drop in the 2017 fiscal year’s budget of $25.5 million from its 2014 budget ($162.6 million in 2014 to $137 million in 2017) have seen some ports receive reduced numbers of calls next year.

“Last season, Prince Rupert saw ferry sailings effectively cut in half from four ports of call during the summer to two calls, and this next summer the proposal is to remain at two scheduled sailings per week,” said Woodrow.

“For the summertime, [Prince Rupert] would have a Tuesday and Saturday ferry.”

in early 1998 after the committee received donations from businesses and private individuals. It was initially $17,500 and rose with interest.

Wozney said some persons had requested unused reward money be returned while others said it should go to a local charitable group.

The committee will seek to either return the money or donate the remainder to a local charitable or other group.

Wozney said it is unfortunate that no arrest has been made so far on the file.

“It has to be upsetting to the family members. Every July 12 they must think about what happened on that day in 1997. It can’t be a happy day.”

Cpl. Chris Manseau of the Kitimat RCMP detachment says the file on that murder and the search for Vermette remains active and he said upwards of a dozen tips a year are still called in and all are followed up on.

He said even re-runs of America’s Most Wanted, which once featured this case, still results in tips.

Yet for every tip so far it doesn’t appear to lead them any closer to his capture.

Anyone who has information that may possibly lead to finding Vermette is asked to call the Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-800-222-8477. You can also call the Kitimat RCMP detachment at 250-632-7111.

KITIMAT - The police search for Kitimat murder suspect Kevin Vermette continues, but the reward money for his capture is being retired at the end of the month.

That means if anyone has information that can lead authorities to Vermette’s whereabouts they only have about four weeks to collect the pot which is currently approximately $25,000.

Kevin Vermette was and remains the sole suspect in the grizzly triple murder which shook the community of Kitimat in July 1997.

Michael Mauro, David Nunes, and Mark Teves were killed and a fourth, Donny Oliveira, was seriously wounded in the confrontation in Hirsch Creek Park.

Hundreds of tips to police poured in after the incident however none led to the discovery of Vermette’s whereabouts.

Vermette, at that time, was considered Canada’s most wanted criminal.

The reward for his capture was offered by a committee, chaired by Richard Wozney.

Wozney said it’s time to put the reward to rest.

“It’s been ongoing for more than 18 years,” he said, adding, “Maybe with this news dangling out there, there may be more tips that come forWednesday Tuesday ward.”

Phony Northern Health officials reported to be seen

PRINCE RUPERT - Northern Health is advising residents in the northwest to be aware of fraudulent employees pretending to work with the organization.

The fake employees are posing as recruitment services as they approach residents door-to-door asking them to fill out surveys. Northern Health has notified the RCMP about these developments.

The media relations representative for Northern Health, Jonathan Dyck explained in a press release that the phony employees have been reported to be going door-to-door in Prince George conducting air quality surveys and asking for access into the person’s house. The fake employee produces some form of Northern Health identification.

“At this time our program areas are not conducting door to door surveys, and do not normally undertake this type of work. Our outreach usually happens at community events. If a Northern Health employee is coming to your house, it is usually with a prebooked appointment,” said Dyck.

In addition, Internet and telephone scammers claiming to be Northern Health employees have been trying to obtain personal information including banking details through social media, phone or text.

“Our ExpectMore website [expectmore.northernhealth.ca] is the only place to apply for a job at Northern Health.

Firefighters hampered Celebrate the Season with the

TERRACE - A surprise awaited firefighters battling a blaze that caused major roof damage to a home in Usk two weeks ago.

Firefighters found the attic insulated with sawdust, a great insulator, as long as it’s in a non-fire environment, said Thornhill fire chief Rick Boehm.

“It works very well. It did its job for 60+ years,” he said about sawdust being used as insulation which was the usual thing at the time the 60 or 70-year-old home was built.

However, sawdust six or eight inches thick (15-20 cm) can hide sparks inside it, which proves challenging to extinguish, he said.

“You can hit it with water all day and there’s eight inches of sawdust, the top half is wet and the bottom is wet and everything inside is bone dry,” he said, adding he’s only seen that happen once before and most of the firefighters hadn’t seen it at all.

About 24 firefighters went to the blaze at Usk after being called at about 6:25 p.m. Nov. 11, said Boehm.

Everyone got out safely thanks to a

teen inside who smelled smoke, evacuated the home and called 911, he said.

Firefighters had to physically remove all the sawdust with a chainsaw, pulling it down on top of them to spread it out enough so the water would put the fire completely out.

“It doesn’t come down in giant flaming balls, it just comes down in embers,” said Boehm. “The worst part is flammable dust in the attic and an all tin roof makes it an oven. Everything is going against them.”

They battled it for eight hours to adequately put the blaze out, added Boehm. But two days later, the owner saw smoke in a little corner that had been missed and called firefighters again, who poured water on it for two hours to extinguish it, said Boehm.

It’s believed to be a chimney-related fire, said Boehm. “What happens is when a stovepipe goes through the roof, it can get hot and crack and allow fire to extend into the attic area,” he said. “Its roof is completely gone on one side and then the main body of the structure, living room, kitchen. The bedrooms are intact,” he said, adding the bedroom doors were closed, preventing damage to them.

PRINCE RUPERT - Last Tuesday, the Prince Rupert and District School Board (SD52) elected its board chair and other officers for the upcoming year.

Tina Last was returned as board chair for the 11th straight year and Janet Beil was returned as vice chair.

The position of British Columbia School Trustees Association (BC STA) provincial council member was won by James Horne, while Louisa Sanchez was elected BC STA provincial council alternate.

Terri-Lynne Huddlestone was elected BC Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) representative council member and Sanchez was elected to the position of BCPSEA representative council alternate.

For the school liaison appointments, board member Horne will be liaison for Charles Hays Secondary School and Pacific Coast, Sanchez will be liaison for Conrad Elementary and Hartley Bay, Last will take the duties for Lax Kxeen, Huddlestone will be liaison for Pineridge Elementary and Prince Rupert Middle School and Bart Kuntz will be liaison for Roosevelt Park.

Last and Kuntz are the school board representatives for the personnel committee, Sanchez and Huddlestone are on the district improvement team, Huddlestone, Sanchez and Beil are on the finance and building committee and Kuntz and Horne make up the policy committee.

Among other committees, Last will be Aboriginal education council alternate, Lester Centre of the Arts alternate and will sit on the district technology committee. Huddlestone is on the Aboriginal education council and the healthy community integration committee, Horne will sit on the district parent advisory and will be the alternate for Canadian parents for French committee and Beil is the district parent advisory alternate and is on the Lester Centre committee.

Kuntz will sit on the district scholarship committee and Canadian parents for French committee.

The by-election to fill ex-school board trustee Judy Carlick-Pearson’s position will occur early in the new year.

KITIMAT - More than 30 people attended a business roundtable hosted by the Kitimat Economic Development Office on November 26.

The roundtable was the conclusion of an effort in November to gather business community feedback about operating in Kitimat.

A group of volunteers had been

Economic Development Director Rose Klukas said her department could potentially offer seed money to hire a consultant to set a terms of reference for the group.

She emphasizes that while her department may spearhead the idea it will only work with the participation of business volunteers.

“People were passionate about

their opinion and expressed positives and negatives,” she said about the roundtable discussion.

People had concerns that generally centred around the subject of people shopping out of town, and also for the desire to encourage people to come to Kitimat to shop.

Klukas said decades ago there was a Downtown Revitalization Committee, and this extends that group’s work under a banner that’s

more inclusive to all of Kitimat’s businesses.

“We’re serious about supporting local business. This is the start.

We’ll do what we can but it’s definitely dependent on the business community also participating,” said Klukas.

Volunteers who have said they’d join this new committee will regroup in the coming weeks to plan out their work.

Could Petronas’ LNG project collapse Skeena salmon?

Scientists from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Simon Fraser University and the Skeena Fisheries Commission have all concluded that Petronas’ proposed LNG facility on Lelu Island would be built over top of the Skeena’s most critical salmon habitat and could have significant impacts on aboriginal, commercial and recreational fisheries. Petronas and its consultant Stantec claim otherwise.

Terrace council rejects plea to keep man’s mudroom

TERRACE - City council has denied a man’s request to keep a mudroom built alongside his recreational vehicle residence, because zoning regulations for the Rest Inn RV Park in which he lives don’t allow for permanent structures.

Paul Geldreich says he needs the 6X16 structure, which is built on the west side of his RV, to protect its entrance from snow which locals have told him builds up on that side.

In a letter read out at the Nov. 30 council meeting, Geldreich said “due to various medical issues such as heart surgery, diabetes, a brain injury and waiting for a knee replacement” his physical condition prevents him from clearing snow.

Shoveling could damage his knee further and another heart attack could be fatal, Geldreich said. He has plans to leave next spring in any event and said the structure is free standing and can

be easily taken down then.

“It is well built and I believe up to code, with 2x6 rafters for a heavy snow load, and in case the city is worried it may come down due to this, I am willing to sign a waiver releasing the city from any liability issues,” he wrote in his letter, which city official Heather Avison read out loud on Geldreich’s behalf.

Geldreich’s request for what he called a compassion medical dispensation, dates back to October when planning officials told him the mudroom had to go.

“They may be worried about setting a precedent, but I believe this to be a unique circumstance and feel it will not cause any difficulties for the city,” he wrote in his letter.

He noted that he spoke to the manager of the RV park, who did not have any issue with his mudroom.

Some of the items he has in the mudroom need to be protected from the cold, so taking down the mudroom would mean having to pay for storage, which

is difficult on his small disability pension of $730.

He was afraid that then he wouldn’t be able to pay his rent and didn’t want his power shut off as a result.

The city has another regulation, this one setting a 150-day limit on living in a recreational vehicle at a RV park, and Geldreich said he was further worried this would affect his planned stay.

“I don’t want to face an eviction notice and if I get one, I don’t know what I’d do,” he said.

“I pay my rent tomorrow (Dec. 1). If the city says no, they (the RV park) can evict me, they shut off hydro and water and I don’t know what I’d do in that case. I guess I’d be up the creek,” said Geldreich.

However, Councillor Stacey Tyers, who deals with landlordtenant issues as part of her profession, said that would not happen, as landlords cannot shut off services arbitrarily.

Council officially received Geldreich’s letter but took no further action.

PARIS, FRANCE - Environment Minister Mary Polak announced British Columbia is the first Canadian jurisdiction committed to joining the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force (GCF) - a unique subnational collaboration between 29 states and provinces from Brazil, Indonesia, Ivory Coast, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Spain and the United States.

By first participating as an observer to the GCF, B.C. will work with members to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation while helping to build the credibility of forest carbon programs on a global scale, demonstrating these programs can be done rigorously while enhancing the preservation of forests both at home and around the world.

First Nations also play an important role in some of B.C.’s leading offset projects. First Nations in B.C. can now use the GCF as a tool to collaborate internationally with other Aboriginal communities and take a leadership role to protect forests and the global climate system.

British Columbia’s forests cover roughly 55 million hectares of land, an area larger than the entire land mass of Spain and represent approximately seven billion tonnes of carbon in above-ground biomass. “B.C. shares the interests of the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force in ensuring forests are sustainably managed and emissions from deforestation are minimized on a global level,” said provincial environment minister Mary Polak.

Molly Nidd Molly passed away peacefully with family by her side, and went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 4, 2015 at the age of 91. She is survived by daughters Jean Nidd (Paul Brais) of Kitimat, BC and Phyllis Box (Steven) of West Kelowna, BC; grandchildren Ryan Calvery, Sarah Stuart (Dean), and Travis Tischart; great granddaughter Autumn Stuart; and sister-in-law Mary Gardner. She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1971.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3637 Brown Road, West Kelowna, BC with Reverend J. Asmus officiating. NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Notice is hereby given that a Public Hearing will be held on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at the Meeting Center, 3226 Bowser Street, New Hazelton, BC commencing at 7:00 pm to receive representation from all persons who deem their interests to be affected by the proposed zoning amendment bylaw: Kitimat-Stikine South Hazelton Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 667, 2015 In general terms, the purpose of the proposed bylaw is to amend the Regional District’s South Hazelton Zoning Bylaw No. 326 by rezoning property located at 1550 Aldous Street described as Lot 19, District Lot 699, Cassiar District Plan 1250 Except the East 200 Feet, from the Ru2 (Hobby Farm Zone) to the RMH (Mobile Home Park Zone). There is an existing Mobile Home Park on the property containing 12 pads. The Park predates the South Hazelton Zoning Bylaw and is deemed to be non-conforming. Successful rezoning would allow the potential to replace mobile homes and occupy vacant pads in accordance with the RMH Zone requirements.

The Public Hearing on Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 667, 2015, is to be held by Directors Linda Pierre, Gail Lowry, and Alice Maitland as delegates of the Regional District Board. Rainmakers compete in provincial championship

PRINCE RUPERT - The Charles Hays Secondary School (CHSS) senior boys’ volleyball team took part in the Big Kahuna BC Volleyball Provincial Championships this weekend in Langley, finishing 15th in a challenging tourney.

The Rainmakers opened against Woodlands Secondary School from Nanaimo, losing 12-25 and 21-25.

In their next match, the Rainmakers played Prince Charles Secondary from Creston. After dropping the first set 19-25, the Rainmakers rebounded, winning the second set 25-19.

The intense third match went down to the wire but the Rainmakers couldn’t quite finish the rally and lost 16-14.

Still a very strong showing from the team, the squad showed integrity and grit.

The final match-up for the Rainmakers was against Sa-Hali High, from Kamloops.

The players from Prince Rupert, knowing their hopes of advancing to the knockout round was over, still put up a great fight.

They dropped the first set 14-25, and lost the second set 17-25, and the match.

Despite the loss, the experience from playing in a high pressure tournament will no doubt help the athletes in all facets of life in the future.

The Rainmakers finished 15th in the tournament, losing all 3 games. That being said, it was still an impressive display of teamsmanship.

The quality teams and players the Rainmakers met gave the athletes a taste of the level of competition that each individual will have to be at if they hope to go forward with volleyball at the post-secondary level.

There is a lot of potential from these young men to do big things on an even bigger stage. They should be grateful for this opportunity, the memories and friendships that come out of playing in team sport.

This wouldn’t be possible without the countless hours from the coaches, teachers and parents that volunteer their time.

The team is set to lose the majority of their players through graduation, as most of the athletes on the squad are in Grade 12 and in their last year of eligibility.

The high school schedule now transitions into the winter season, with basketball taking the main spotlight in the coming weeks.

GITSEGUKLA - Gitsegukla hosted their first annual Basketball Tournament Dec. 4-6, the first tournament ever in their village.

The games were played in Gitsegukla and Gitanyow and neither facility had a score clock.

Instead they used flip chart numbers in Gitanyow and a chalk board in Gitsegukla.

Organized mostly by Carmen Turner, the tournament went quite well.

The men’s division had nine teams – Yow Inters, Gitwinkshilkw, Aiyansh, Hazelton Inters, Terrace WAKS, Goon Squad, Yow Srs, Kispiox and Hazelton Srs. There were a lot of exciting games, with Terrace WAKS advancing to finals to await the team from the back door. Hazelton Srs won over Gitanyow Srs to advance to play Aiyansh.

Then Aiyansh beat the Hazelton Srs to advance to finals against Terrace WAKS. The finals was a well fought battle. Aiyansh started off hard and took the Terrace WAKS by storm, maintaining a 12 point lead for the 1st and 2nd quarter. The WAKS woke up in the 3rd and went on a 8 point run to get within 5 points. Aiyansh and WAKS went point for point for the rest of the game with WAKS coming out on top 75-73 thanks to a last lay up from

Randall Marks.

The ladies division had four teams – Aiyansh, Hazelton, Gitanyow and Gitsegukla.

They had a round robin on Saturday, Dec. 5, where Aiyansh and Hazelton advanced to play in the finals and Gitanyow and Gitsegukla played for 3rd and 4th place.

All Ladies games were played in Gitanyow on Saturday and all games in Gitsegukla on Sunday. Gitsegukla beat Gitanyow and placed 3rd. Aiyansh Thunder placed 1st after beating Hazelton 53-41.

High Scorer for men was Jordan Vickers (Aiyansh), for women Grace Clayton (Thunder). MVP for men was Andrew Nyce (WAKS), for women Kayla Vickes (Thunder). Mr. Hustle was Gilbert Morven (Aiyansh) and Mrs. Hustle was Carlene Wright (Hazelton). Most Inspirational Player was Tristen Nyce.

All stars for men were Phillip Clayton (Aiyansh), Andrew Nyce (Waks), Tyler Moore (Waks), Travis Smith (Hazelton Srs), Tyrone Hill (Gitanyow Srs), David Stewart Jr (Gitwinkshilkw), and Roland Wright (Hazelton).

All stars for women were Chantelle Elliott (Thunder), Tamara Stoney (Hazelton), Korinna Wilson (Hazelton), Connie Johnson (Thunder), Brooke Simpson (Hazelton), Carmen Turner (Gitsegukla), Misty Wells (Gitsegukla).

KITIMAT - The Kitimat Marlins Swim Club was in Prince George for their annual short course (25 meter pool) invitational swim meet. Nine teams competed from across northern BC, making for strong competition.

Zachary Dumas, 16, broke the Northwest BC Record in the boys 15 and over 200 meter butterfly. Dumas already holds the regional record for the 200 meter fly for long course (50 meter pool) Dumas shaved .18 of a second off the record made in 1997

by Garth Coxford from Terrace. Dumas took the silver medal for overall points in the 16 and over boys division.

Other medalist in overall points for the Marlins were Kleanza Cathers, 16, gold in the 16 and over girls, Jadyen Johnston, 11, gold in the 11 year old boy, Leah Desousa, 13, bronze in the 12-13 girls, Emilie Krabes, 11, Bronze in the 11 year old girls.

Krabes was also one of two swimmers for the Marlins that swam to 100 per cent personal best times in all eight of their individual races. Megan Forrest, 8, also swam to all personal best times.
