Seven years ago, Julie Angus and her husband Colin embarked upon a 7,000 kilometre journey, cycling from Scotland to Syria, where they stayed at her uncle’s home in Aleppo.

Filled with at least 2,000 years of history, Angus recalls the Syrian sights and countryside was beautiful, and the pair were touched by the hospitality of the people who were celebrating the end of Ramadan. Some invited the Angus’ into

their homes to take part in a great feast.

Syria is home to at least six Unesco world heritage sites, but many have been damaged or destroyed by the ongoing civil war. Looking at photos of the places Angus visited during her trip is heartbreaking.

“Our family’s apartment where we stayed, it’s gone, it’s been bombed,” said the 41-year-old. “All those people we met on the street that welcomed us in for dinner have been terrorized and they no longer have a home.”

Last March, the family of Angus’ uncle (his wife and three children — a boy aged

19 and two girls, ages 10 and 14), fled the war-town country by paying a smuggler to take them across the border into Turkey.

It was a dangerous journey, noted Angus, with check points and mine fields along the way. Even though they arrived at their destination safely, their new life hasn’t been easy.

According to Angus, the region where the family is living is very dangerous with constant gunfire and bombings. It’s a no-man’s land fought over by government forces and various rebel factions with civilians caught in the crossfire.

Their neighbours who lived across the hall in the apartment building they are staying were killed when their building was bombed in January. The only reason Angus’ family survived is because they happened to be out at the time.

Group fundraising for Syrian refugee family Continued from Page A1

“They aren’t able to work because they don’t have a work permit and they don’t speak the language,” said Angus, noting her uncle has a degree in English and lived in Canada briefly. His wife is a hairdresser.

“There’s no future for these refugees in Turkey and they need to find a home.”

After hearing about her family’s situation in Turkey, Angus felt compelled to help. Thus the Fairfield Refugee Sponsorship was born.

The group of 12 strangers has come together to raise funds to bring the family to Victoria. They’re navigating through the process with the help of the InterCultural Association of Greater Victoria and need to raise about $55,000 to support the family of five during their first year in Canada. So far, about $28,000 has been raised.

The process involves about 100 pages of paperwork, detailing everything about the family’s personal history, education, work experiences, organizations and associations they belong to, and the reason they are fleeing. Once they arrive, the group plans to help them adjust to life in Canada by providing assistance with housing, start-up supplies like furniture and clothing, school enrolment, English as a second language training, employment and whatever else they need.

“More than 200,000 people have now been killed. Many have lost friends, acquaintances, neighbours and family members, so we want to know how best to help them deal with those issues when they arrive here,” said Angus, who keeps in touch with the family through Facebook Messenger whenever they find an Internet connection.

Fairfield Refugee Sponsorship is among a number of groups that are trying to help Syrian refugees get to Victoria.

The Canadian government has committed to bringing 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of the year. Some premiers, however, have raised concerns about the Justin Trudeau’s timeline and measures for security screening.

Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps has been working with refugee organizations and mayors across the Island, and is waiting for word from the federal government as to if and how many refugees could be coming to the city.

During a workshop on the issue in Vancouver earlier this week, Helps said Victoria and Vancouver were both mentioned.

“I think that Canada has a lot to offer and we can offer assistance to people who clearly need a lot of help.

For Angus, helping Syrian refugees is a moral obligation. Her father came to Canada from Syria when he was a young man and didn’t speak much English.

But he managed to build a career with the military, serving in Afghanistan and a number of war-torn areas, and provide Angus with opportunities she never

would have had otherwise.

“I know there are people who will make the most of their new lives in Canada and contribute to our country,” she said.

“Syria was a peaceful country throughout their whole lives until the war broke out four years ago.

It’s very hard for them to adapt and to know that their home is gone. It will never be the same. They will never be able to return, they’ve lost everything they have...It’s heartbreaking.”

On Friday, Nov. 20, the Fairfield Refugee Sponsorship will be hosting Sweet on Syria at the City Light Church. The event includes desserts, nonalcoholic drinks and live music, as well as a silent auction and multi-media presentation on Syria. The Victoria Symphony continues to celebrate its 75th anniversary season with Canadian superstar violinist James Ehnes. On Nov. 21 and 22, Ehnes will come to Victoria to play Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole.

Victoria Symphony music director Tania Miller will conduct Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. When Miller and the music programming committee were planning the anniversary season, Ehnes was one fo the first names mentioned as a guest to invite. He debuted with the Victoria Symphony as a teenager and has been back twice since then, playing Beethoven in 2009 and Sibelius in 2013.

Youth shelter hosts open house The Kiwanis Emergency Youth Shelter (KEYS) is inviting the public to its open house on Friday, Nov. 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Located at 2117 Vancouver St., KEYS is a 10-bed facility that provides services for youth between the ages of 13 to 18 who are in crisis and have no safe housing alternatives. The program offers assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week to youth from all over Greater Victoria. In the last year alone, KEYS housed 281 youth.

Additionally, KEYS received over 800 referrals/support requests from the community.

These referrals not only represent youth needing to access the shelter, but families and caregivers seeking support from KEYS counsellors.

KEYS also provides youth and family counselling to the community free of charge.

Bay Street Armoury celebrates 100th anniversary Kendra Wong Victoria News

It was a single act of bravery by a piper in the Canadian Scottish Regiment, based in Victoria, that inspired soldiers to fight in World War I. In 1914, hundreds of soldiers from all over the world went to war to fight for their country. More than nine million soldiers would not return home, including close to 61,000 Canadians.

One of those soldiers who would not return home was piper James Cleland Richardson, who was part of the 16th Battalion (later renamed the Canadian Scottish Regiment).

The Chilliwack resident was only 20 years old when he joined the army.

On Oct. 8, 1916, as part of the Battle of the Somme in France, Richardson did what many soldiers couldn’t.

“They were pinned down by machine gun fire and they couldn’t move,” said John Azar, president and chief commemoration officer, adding traditionally units had pipers to motivate troops during war.

Richardson’s act of bravery and the boom of the bagpipes over the gunfire roused the troops. They climbed out of their shell holes, attacked the enemy and were able to capture the trenches.

On his way back to camp following the victory, Richardson realized he left his bagpipes behind in the fight. He went back to get them and never returned.

His remains were found in 1920 and he is now buried in France.

He was later awarded

the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration awarded for valour in the face of the enemy.

The bagpipes eventually found their way into a school in Scotland, which helped determine they belonged to Richardson. Shortly after, the bagpipes were returned to Canada and are now on permanent display at the legislature.

“It’s one of the most famous sets of pipes in the world from Canada just because of the combination of the fact that this piper was from a Canadian regiment and he won the Victoria Cross,” said warrant officer

Roger McGuire, former pipe major of the Canadian Scottish Regiment. “Mud of the Somme is still visible on the pipes.

It’s something you really have to see to appreciate.”

Richardson’s pipes will be on display to the public at the Bay Street Armoury’s 100th anniversary celebration Sunday, Nov. 22. The celebration includes an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to give residents a glimpse into the big red building on the corner of Blanshard and Bay streets, which is currently home to the Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s).

“Most of our soldiers grew up here and went to school here.

Our soldiers belong to the community,” said Lt.-Colonel Stephen Sawyer, commanding officer of the Canadian Scottish Regiment. “We feel it’s important to maintain ties with the community.”

Victoria police launch new five-year strategic plan Pamela Roth Victoria News

Leading into the framework agreement of the Victoria police 2015 strategic plan, there was much discussion on whether the department’s name should be changed to include Esquimalt.

But given the significant history of the Victoria Police Department, Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins said changing a name at this point won’t make a difference.

“What we’re seeing is integrated and everything’s being done with two communities, not just one,” said Desjardins, noting that having the Victoria and Esquimalt police board recognizes the coverage of two communities.

“The chief has really done a good

job in embedding two communities into everything he’s done.

We don’t need to change the name to do that.”

The topic came up briefly on Tuesday afternoon when Victoria police launched their new strategic plan, which will chart the organization’s course for the next five years.

The plan is meant to give direction for the future without being too prescriptive, noted Desjardins, and

“I was invited back to that and they did a hands-on ritual to remove the spirit out of my body and put it back into the grave. I was a little skeptical of that, but I believe in it now.”

In 1993, Loris Corletto made the most unusual and interesting discovery of his career.

Corletto, who was working in the City of Victoria’s public works department putting in a new water line on the corner of Dallas Road and Montreal Street, was drilling through asphalt when he came across a

human skull.

It was perfectly intact with a flattened forehead, a status symbol among indigenous people in the pacific northwest.

There were various human bones as well.

Work was stopped in the area and archaeologists from the Royal B.C. Museum were called in to examine the remains.

It turns out, the skull was that of an aboriginal person and was roughly 400 to 1,000 years old.

Thirty-year tenure with the city creates variety of stories

Researcher discovers ancient giant wasp A researcher at the Royal B.C. Museum has discovered a new species of giant wasps that inhabited the earth roughly 53 million years ago.

Dr. Bruce Archibald, along with other researchers, discovered the species as fossils from ancient forests in B.C. and Washington, including McAbee fossil beds near Cache Creek.

The giant horntail wood-wasps, named ypresiosirex orthosemos, were about seven centimetres in length and resembled its modern relatives.

They were forest pests, their young bore tunnels through wood to create gardens in which they grow the fungus that they eat.

According to researchers, the wasps thrived in earlier years, although tropical heat increased the average temperature in the forest, making it difficult for them to survive.

“By looking into the fossil record, we hope to better understand how ancient forests and the insects that lived in there were affected by differing climates.

Now, with a First Nations burial story and a handful of others under his belt, the 64-year-old is retiring.

During his 30-year tenure with the city, he’s held a variety of jobs including working in garbage, concrete, sewage and paving.

“He’s one of a kind.

He’s very dedicated to what he did, he got along with everyone in the department and was always willing to share his knowledge with others,” said Harry Sandhu, supervisor of

Victorians have big hearts It’s hard to fathom what’s happened to the thousands of Syrians who’ve been forced to flee their homes and head to foreign countries due to the ongoing violence in the Middle East.

Like many Canadians, most of them lived a peaceful existence their entire lives, raising their families and going to work each day. Now that has been taken away from them and their world has been turned upside down.

One of the families that fled Syria is now living in a dangerous area of Turkey. Although they managed to make it safely across the border, the area they are living is a no-man’s land fought over by government forces and various rebel factions. There is constant gunfire and bombings.

Sometimes civilians are caught in the violence.

The family is unable to work because they don’t have a work permit and can’t speak the language. A shortage of cash is also now making it difficult to pay for accommodation and food.

Their future looks bleak. All they can do is hope someone will come to the rescue.

Fortunately, a number of groups in Victoria are offering a helping hand and are currently in the process of raising funds to sponsor families such as this so they can come to Canada and begin a new, peaceful life.

Victoria is an amazing community in that there’s always some kind of fundraiser going on to help the less fortunate.

Yes, there are a number of people that need help in our own community, but someone also has to reach out and help those that desperately need a hand on the other side of the world.

Reconciliation: a meaningful step Re: Myths of the Highway of Tears (B.C. Views, Oct. 28).

Tom Fletcher’s column triggered my memory of the dog whistle politics we saw in the recent federal election.

The Highway of Tears is not a myth and using mythology in the title of that column is an insult to the hundreds of aboriginal families who have lost loved ones as a result of many tragedies that

have occurred on that road and across this country.

The identity politics of the outgoing prime minister were properly rewarded, and the party that showed Stephen Harper the door at 24 Sussex Drive has promised an inquiry into the disproportionate number of murders and disappearances that continue to occur in the Aboriginal population. It would be hoped that an inquiry will begin to expose the depth and colour of systemic issues inherent in Canadian institutions that help perpetuate these tragedies, and that the new federal government will commit to real solutions from its recommendations.

The incoming prime minister has made further commitments to the 92 recommendations that came out of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) process.

The TRC has helped many Canadians to understand the origins of deeprooted problems faced by aboriginal communities both on and off reserve, and to help them move Canadians individually and collectively to a reconciliation commitment. Those current and future problems will always be about the quality of the relationship between the First Nations people and the general non-native population.

Improving the transportation options for people in the North is primary, but

it does not solve the systemic problems that continue to poison opportunities for everyone to work together to end the dysphoria that has dominated aboriginal communities both on and off reserve.

Reconciliation Canada (reconciliationcanada.ca) is a key agent of change in this space and is dedicated to building meaningful relationships where all Canadians achieve their full potential and shared prosperity. Getting informed is the first step. Stepping into this discourse is the next. I am stepping in.

Take charge of the community I feel that when the homeless take over in your community you have to take charge. Several agencies in town have done many things to make things better. Housing a person is cheaper than courts, jails, probation and hospital stays. I wish that there will be a national strategy for homelessness in 2016.

Victoria is a wonderful place to live.

I hope that things change very soon concerning the street community.

Bateman, who is the son of painter Robert Bateman, says in his father’s work the art is inside the frames while in his the art is on the outside of the frames. The piece is one work that was being installed as a part of of the oneTree exhibit, a project that used the wood from one single tree to create a variety of artworks. Forty-two artists created work for the exhibit, which runs until Jan. 15, 2016.

GLC at home on any terrain Alsace, France:The route taken for the launch of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV was cruel and unusual punishment for some of us.

The navigation system guided us through a spectacular drive of more than 500 kilometres, which started and concluded in Basel, the Swiss city straddling the Swiss, French and German borders. First, we motored to Strasbourg, the capital ofAlsace, and then returned the next day via theVosges Mountains and the MunsterValley.

Cruel? –Well, for the oenophiles among the participating media group having to pass without tasting at the many historic Alsace vineyards along the way made one weep. It was just as bad for the beer-swillers who whiffed the smell of hops as they dreamed about sinking a chilled Kronenbourg.

Those, for whom food excites, had their taste buds tickled.

They wolfed down amazing soft cheeses and cold cuts at the roadside.A curious donkey and a family of storks observed our feeding frenzy from a nest on high.

The mental torture was eased by an extremely pleasurable drive in this premium mid-range, second generation SUV from Mercedes-Benz, which replaces the GLK moniker with GLC reflecting its mechanical similarities to the

C-Class sedan.

test cars were pre-production Euro-spec 250s but we did get to take to the winding, often mountainous roads in a version that will more closely resemble the Canadian 300 4Matic.The same 2.0 turbo-four gas engine we get, though light of around 33 horses, powered it.

The GLK-spec 3.5-litreV6 is gone but worry not, if I might be crude, the four banger, coupled with the new 9G-tronic transmission, is more than adequate on the freeway – zero to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds – and up those hills.And it was quiet in that cabin.

Incidentally, the GLC will use four-cylinder power in all versions – gas, diesel and plug-in gas/ electric hybrid. Economy ratings are expected to be in the low 8s L/100kms in the city, low 6s on the highway.

Dynamic Select is standard fare, allowing the driver to switch between Eco, Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes.The tester was also equipped with the optional Air Body Control, which improves on its predecessor’sAirmatic system ability to smooth out the ride.

Mercedes boasts that the GLC is at home on any terrain. Most of those purchased will become city dwellers, destined to hunt in shopping malls, but the drive proved the GLC is more than capable in the wild.

package will not be offered in Canada. An off-road course included a 38-degree incline, which my drive partner Regina Chan expertly scaled, tilted about 25 degrees at one point!

The standard safety package is extensive and notably includes Collision PreventionAssist, which warns of an imminent crash and helps to apply the brakes, and the self-explanatory Passive Blind SpotAssist.

I’m a sucker for M-B’s Intelligent Drive concept.The various systems take data from the various sensors to boost comfort and safety.

Systems that think and act somewhat quicker than your average driver!

The first Canadian models will be gas-powered, a turbo-diesel comes in the 2017 model year and a plug-in hybrid is scheduled for 2018. A Coupe version is on the way but no date yet.

The base sticker price is $44,950 but take it up to the premium package, with COMAND navigation and a superb panoramic roof, and you are nudging 50 grand. Load in those extra tricky active safety technologies and you soon hit the mid-50s. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

For Canada and the world to be truly successful, we must recognize the inherent rights of children to have a say in their lives from a young age, suggests an Island man urging Canadians to declare Nov. 20 Rights of the Child Day.

“Graduated steps into democratic selfreliance must begin at birth and not be one giant leap at the age of majority,” says John McDonald, a former school teacher and school trustee now living in Duncan.

The initiative would recognize the anniversary of the United Nations’ adoption of

Declaration of the Rights of the Child and raise awareness of the comprehensive document, creating potentially far-reaching effects.

“If kids knew what their rights are and what they’re not, it would be a better world. They would understand democracy,” he said.

The initiative’s roots date back to 1924, and the Geneva Declaration on the Rights of the Child, followed by the 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child adopted by the United Nations.

Fast-forward to Nov. 20, 1989, and the Declaration of the Rights of the Child was adopted by the General Assem-

bly of the United Nations and ratified in Canada several years later.

McDonald broadly categorizes the Rights of the Child under three main headings: • The right to survival — through the provision of adequate food, shelter, clean water and primary health care.

Essential to the initiative is introducing democracy at a young age as a way of raising democratically minded adults. “You can’t raise minors with no say into their lives,” McDonald says.

“We can’t raise our kids in an undemocratic household and school system then send them out on their own and say, ‘Now you need to live in a democracy’,” McDonald argues, suggesting that if children are going to learn about democracy, it needs to begin when they’re young.

People — including children — have a strong tendency to do and be what is expected of them, he says.

“Therefore the greatest danger to our society is the concept that young people are irresponsible, stupid, cannot think and are incapable of building the future that the present adults must live in.

Well, you better have faith in our offspring for it is their world that we (adults) will have to live in,” he says, adding, “adults have not given us much to boast about in human development. School board elects chair, reps Edith Loring-Kuhanga was elected as chair of the Greater Victoria School Board for a second term during last week’s annual elections.

Diane McNally was re-elected as vicechair of the board. Peg Orchterton will remain the board rep for the B.C. Public School Employeers’ Association and Ann Whiteaker will continue as the British Columbia Trustees’ Association Provincial Councillor.

“One thing that I know for sure is that we all want what’s best for our students in the Greater Victoria School District,” said LoringKuhanga in a release.

Art show celebrates locals with disabilities Victoria News

When Victoria resident Janice Attwell talks about her paintings, her face lights up.

The 32-year-old infectiously describes the number of paintings she's completed including a Halloweenthemed painting featuring a silhouette of a witch, as well as paintings with flowers and rainbows.

Painting has become a means of expression for Attwell, who has down syndrome.

“Special, loving and caring,” she said when asked how art makes her feel.

Once a month, she has the opportunity to get together with other residents at BeConnected Support Services, a multi-service organization offering a variety of services for residents on Vancouver Island with developmental disabilities, who create art during craft night.

More than 15 residents get to experiment with various art forms including tie-dye shirts, and painting bird houses and rocks.

“We have clients that are non-verbal that will come and paint. Even though they can't verbally put out how they feel about us, they just sit there with their colours. In a way, you get an expression of how they're feeling too,” said Luis DeSousa, course facilitator at BeConnected.

For the month of November, Attwell and pieces from 25 other artists will be on display and up for sale as part of the fifth annual BeCommunity Art Show at the Spiral Cafe in Esquimalt.

DeSousa said this year's art show is the largest one they've done so far, with dozens of paintings on display and 40 already sold.

“The sales have been huge so far and community support is awesome,” he said. “I was just really proud.

They're talking to anyone that has interest in their work. They're out there in the community and it's accepted.

There's no disability — it's art.”

Every dollar from the sales goes back into artists' pockets and allows them to save up extra money to achieve their dreams.

“It also assists with dreams and goals and aspirations,” said Michelle Berkeley, coordinator of craft night and co-coordinator of the art show. “It makes them feel like they're giving back.

They're helping people and giving them something.”

Last year, Attwell sold four paintings.

This year, she has sold three with a little over a week until the show comes to an end.

After the art show, Attwell will set her sights even higher.

“I want to have an art show in Toronto.

The jaunty plumey tail is perhaps the Eastern grey squirrel’s most appealing feature, but the swivelling foot joints that allow it to race headfirst down tree trunks while clinging on with reversed claws is pretty impressive too.

Who can watch the antics of the backyard squirrel without smiling, as he swings trapeze-style from branch to branch, seemingly for the pure fun of it?

He’s so hyper-active, he buries acorns with-

out even bothering to remember where he put half of them, which is a good thing for spreading the range of the Garry Oak. The other thing Sciurus carolinensis forgets to do is look before crossing the road, which is a squirrel death zone.

Squirrels might live in nature about six years, but in urban places many die in traffic before they’re a year old, and as they don’t produce young in their first year there is automatic birth-control at work here.

Female squirrels do remember though where they grew up,

The grey squirrel’s successful adaptation prompts the question of how long something has to fit into an ecosystem before it’s considered naturalized.

The grey squirrel’s beautiful tail is thought to be an adaptive advantage, serving as a balancer, an expressive communicator, a blanket in winter and shade-giver in summer: good for all climates and treescapes.

Still, some locals hold his adaptive success against the grey squirrel.

The other crime he commits is his habit of chewing through electrical wires. One squirrel can deprive thousands of households of electricity for days.

Most people don’t realize how tameable Sciurus carolinensis is.

For a snack she will, over time, advance from backyard to porch to kitchen to a place on the back of the sofa from which she can comfortably survey her wider outdoor kingdom.

Overfamiliarity is not wise however, for squirrel bites can spread tenacious viruses and bacteria, and the birdseeds and peanuts some people offer them are harmful to squirrels’ digestive tracts. As with all wildlife, it’s best to enjoy their lively presence among us from a distance, while working to preserve the tree canopy and natural spaces they need for habitat and survival.

Help Fill a Dream and Country Miniature World Grocer launch campaign The Greatest Little Show On Earthtm

Amidst a sea of colourful daisies, Eurosa Farms in Central Saanich was the site for the launch of Help Fill a Dream and Country Grocer’s fifth fundraising campaign.

The event saw a small gathering, yet an important one with employees of Eurosa Farms, Country Grocer and Help Fill a Dream coming together, along with Emma Smith and her parents. Emma is in stable condition but has brain cancer and is continually undergoing treatment. She and her family went to Hawaii to see a live volcano this past June, a dream come true for Emma and supported by the Help Fill a Dream Foundation.

Among the many flowers, Emma remained in fascination, asking questions about the flowers, constantly smelling the bouquets.

Emma isn’t the only Vancouver Island child supported by the foundation.

Celebrating their 30th year, Help Fill a Dream fulfilled 12 dreams in 2015 and according to executive director Craig Smith, next January to April is already booked.

Having partnered with Country Grocer for five years now, Smith said beginning the campaign with them was about the local aspect.

“We’ve quickly learned its become a cause that all of their employees and their customers have really rallied behind,” he said.

Their help goes a long way in many things they do on a daily basis at the store, including selling Dream Bouquets designed and supplied by Eurosa Farms with a portion of that going towards Help Fill a Dream, to help kids like Emma have their dreams come true.

Emma’s parents said the foundation has really helped them financially.

Diane, Emma’s mom, said the one-week trip to Hawaii created memories and was an amazing moment. She added that Help Fill a Dream has also helped the conservatory downtown as well, where Emma takes music

ur beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother passed away in the early morning of November 11th, 2015 (Remembrance Day).

She leaves behind her loving family, Heather (Eric) Mass, Don (Linda) Hincks, Ken (Jean) Hincks and Mike (Barb) Hincks along with 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Marion was raised in Pitt Meadows and after high school attended nursing school at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. After graduation she nursed returning service men In Calgary, but returned to Maple Ridge to raise her family. She continued to work as an RN, first with Dr. Arbour and later at the Maple Ridge Hospital. When her family was grown she returned to Victoria where she finished her career as a nurse at Victoria General Hospital.

She was a great friend to many people who, with her

family, will remember her fondly, including those members of her bridge clubs in Haney and later Victoria.

On retirement she pursued her many interests with vigor, including regularly attending the symphony and theatre, becoming an active member of the University of Victoria Sage Group and the Canadian Institute of International Affairs. She also volunteered at the local health clinic and the tourism industry in Victoria and enjoyed many years travelling with her friends and family. She loved to walk and swim and planned wonderful picnics on the beach with her family – times her children and grandchildren remember well.

A Celebration of Life will be held to remember this wonderful woman at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Breast Cancer Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Society.

Jeff Scott remembers April 11, not because it's his mother's birthday, but because that's the day he become a quadriplegic.

Scott, a Fernwood resident and outdoor sport enthusiast, was snowboarding in Revelstoke on the last day of the season in 2010.

He came up short on a gap, knocked himself out and continued to cartwheel down the hill unconscious.

When he finally woke up, he couldn't feel his body.

“My able-bodied independent life was a memory in a pipe dream. I was just overwhelmed with a new sensation and just a whole new world,” Scott said. “I had no idea about spinal cord injuries, but I was learning a lot.”

He broke his C1, C5 and C6, leaving him the function of a C5-6 quadriplegic.

He knew from the beginning that his ability to build up his strength would allow him to be independent and enjoy the activities he used to when he was able-bodied.

It was in rehab where Scott discovered wheelchair rugby.

“It's a challenging game, it's physical, but also mentally, there's a lot of strategy involved as well,” he said. “I enjoy both of those as well as the camaraderie with the people you play with.”

Scott went from being in a power wheelchair to a manual one. Though the healing process is still ongoing, he credits sports with his ability to maintain his independence.

“It challenges me to do more, it's a perpetual cycle with what I'm able to do,” Scott said. “I look back on the last five years since I got hurt and I kind of need to take a moment to appreciate how far I came. When I came out

of the hospital I could barely feed myself.

Sport has given me my life back.”

Scott also founded the Live It! Love It! Foundation dedicated to promoting the progression of adaptive adventure and providing outdoor recreation opportunities for the disabled through workshops, camps, events and projects.

Earlier this week, Scott was the keynote speaker at the first annual ParaSport Development Week at the University of Victoria.

The week-long event at locations around Greater Victoria included wheelchair tennis and rugby and other clinics to introduce people with disabilities to the opportunities available to them locally.

Andrea Carey, board director with the Canadian Paralympic Committee and organizer of Paralympic development week, said Greater Victoria is quickly becoming a hub for disability sport.

“Greater Victoria has a long-standing tradition of creating great athletes and we also recognize that there's huge potential with disability sport,” Carey said, adding a number of national and international athletes and coaches train in Victoria.

“There's people out there that really don't know what the options are and they don't understand where they fit in to that. We want to ensure that anyone that wants to participate has that opportunity.”

On Saturday, Nov. 21, there will be a wheelchair basketball program at CASRA from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and a wheelchair basketball demo at 5 p.m.

First impressions really do make a difference when it comes to selling your home.

Even in a competitive market like Victoria has today, taking a little extra effort to put your home’s best face forward will help you sell quickly and for top dollar.

For some, that means hiring a professional, but with a little time and thought, you can also do much of the work yourself, says Gail Cole, of All Things Balanced.

Cole, also a certified feng shui practitioner, teaches the how-to of preparing your home for sale this Saturday, Nov. 21, in a course at Monterey Rec Centre in Oak Bay. “Create that ‘Buying’ Feeling when Selling Your Home” is based on Cole’s e-book of the same title.

Participants will learn the most important things they need to know when selling their home — tips designed to help them sell “quickly, easily and with less stress.”

For further reading, Cole’s book is also included in the registration.

“It’s a step-by-step how to get ready; a room by room (look) at what can stay and what has to go because not everything can stay,” Cole said in an interview from her Saanich home.

The top three areas Cole typically undertakes with clients are creating curb appeal, de-cluttering and de-personalizing, and overall cleanliness.

“Creating good energy is important,” she reflects. “You can’t touch how things ‘feel,’ but when you walk into a home you know.”

Cole’s approach is two-fold. First you want to help buyers see themselves in the home, and that means creating a welcoming atmosphere that begins in the front garden and

continues through the entry and inside.

But it’s also about “de-personalizing” — removing the wall of family photos and instead hanging generic artwork that complements the setting. The goal is to make it as neutral as possible, but still warm.

Ensuring the yard is tidy and the home is clean, decluttered and in good repair will also give the impression that the home has been well-cared for, Cole notes. Make sure the litter box is tucked away, the floors are swept and the recycling is tidy and organized out of sight.

Otherwise, the impression for buyers is, “if it’s dirty, it’s probably been dirty for a long time,” Cole says. “If you have a cat, that’s okay, but put the litter away during a showing.”

of stuff, it does take time,” she says.

It’s also possible to mitigate some of the negatives of a home with some simple touches.

For example, the effects of a long narrow hallway can be eased with the addition of mirrors to reflect light and give the impression of space.

“What are people first going to see when they first walk in; what’s their first impression going to be?”

Cole asks.

“In this hot market, if you’re not ready and it sits on the market, it becomes one of those duds.”

Sadly, the Off-Road Engineering package will not be offered in Canada. An off-road course included a 38-degree incline, which my drive partner Regina Chan expertly scaled, tilted about 25 degrees at one point!

Multi-million dollar luxury residences get high-end pool cars

They’re taking ridesharing to a whole new level south of the border.

Audi at home is offering a ready-to-drive fleets of six vehicles exclusively for residents of select luxury properties in two states.

On the west coast, the car share scheme will operate at LUMINA by Tishman Speyer, San Francisco’s largest luxury condominium project currently under construction, while the Four Seasons Residences in Miami will offer the service on the east coast. The service will soon expand to other major U.S. cities.

Residents will be able to book a vehicle instantly and tailor their choice to the kind of driving they expect to do. The fleet currently includes the Audi S7, S5 Cabriolet, SQ5, TT Roadster, Q7, and RS5 Cabriolet.

“Spontaneity, personalization and customization is

core to the Audi at home service,” said Mark Del Rosso Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Audi of America. “It provides residents a truly premium experience that suits their daily life and needs, whether it’s a car for a quick getaway out of the city or an extra vehicle for visiting guests.”

The reservation process is simple: interested residents register through the property’s concierge and use a mobile website to reserve the vehicle of their choice.

Upon the conclusion of the reservation, residents simply return the Audi vehicle to the property valet.

All Audi at home vehicles are equipped with Prestige trim, and 24/7 live customer care is offered for drivers’ convenience. Rates – still to be announced – will be charged either hourly or daily. This rate covers services including cleaning, fuel, insurance, local tolls and unlimited mileage. All vehicles onsite are rotated on a regular basis, providing residents a fresh fleet

from which to choose.

Another program may offer a clue to costs of participation. Audi on demand, started in San Francisco last April, giving customers within the city limits access to a wide range of vehicles, from the A4 sedan ($155 a day) to the Audi R8 supercar ($1,195 a day). It doesn’t take a genius to notice that the world has problems, but it certainly takes a great amount of strength and personal will to band together and make a difference.

Precisely what Edward Milne Community School leadership students Hope Millard, Hailey Dimock and Andrea Van Dyck, will try and do in the coming weeks as part of their latest initiative: the 10,000 Tonight Food Drive.

The trio, along with their leadership teacher, Todd Powell, will join both Belmont and Royal Bay secondary schools to each collect 10,000 or more non-perishable food items in one night, from 5 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 2. EMCS will then donate everything to the Sooke Food Bank that same night.

Anytime within that week, people can still bring food in – after all, every bit helps.

Biggest challenge so far is to get the word out, given that EMCS has only 700 students and is situated in a smaller community than the other two.

Millard, Dimock and Van Dyck suggested that since there’s not as many kids or parents to get it out to, their first push will be to break past that barrier and get it to the people who don’t even have kids in the school.
