Investigation ongoing in school rooftop fire TRE VOR CR AWLEY

The investigation into a fire at Laurie Middle School is ongoing, as school district staff have shut down the building for repairs stemming from a rooftop fire. Cranbrook RCMP along with Fire and Emergency Services responded to the blaze early Wednesday morning, as fire fighters extinguished the blaze and police assisted with an investigation into the cause. While authorities haven’t determined what started the fire, it is considered suspicious by the RCMP. Anyone who has information about the fire is encouraged to call the Cranbrook RCMP at 250-4893471 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-

222-8477. The Southeast Kootenay school district has closed Laurie Middle School for Thursday and Friday, however, class will be back in session on Monday, Nov. 16. Rob Norum, treasurer with School District 5, notes that while the fire was quickly extinguished, the activated sprinklers caused a lot of water damage inside the building. “The fire damage was limited to the exterior of the building, but it did trigger our sprinkler system, so we didn’t get any fire inside the school because our sprinkler systems worked like they’re supposed to work,” Norum said.

RCMP, along with Fire and Emergency Services, are investigating a blaze at Laurie Middle School.

The Kimberley RCMP is down three police vehicles after a pursuit early Thursday morning. Cpl. Chris Newel reports that the local detachment responded to a theft in progress at a local golf course (which he did not name). “An officer responded to the location, where he came across an approaching truck that purposefully struck the police vehicle,” Newel said. “The truck fled after hitting the marked police vehicle. The officer determined that the truck was a stolen vehicle. A second officer was approaching the scene and his vehicle was also struck.” Newel says police were able to follow the suspect vehicle into the downtown area of Kimberley. “Once into the downtown core, the vehicle stopped and backed up,

hitting the front of the police vehicle. The subjects started down a dead end with a police vehicle behind, realizing they were trapped they turned around and attempted to hit the police vehicle again, but the officer was able to get out of the way. At this point the suspect driver lost control and veered off the road and struck a building damaging the business front.” The suspect vehicle headed towards the Kimberley Alpine Resort, where again officers were able to contain the vehicle, Newel says. “The driver rammed both police vehicles, disabling one and was able to take off. The suspect vehicle drove into the Kimberley Ski Hill maintenance yard where again two police cars were able to box the suspect vehicle in and get it stopped.

Stetski appointed to shadow cabinet TRE VOR CR AWLEY

While Wayne Stetski has been busy lately adjusting to his new role as Kootenay-Columbia MP, he has taken on another role within the NDP caucus. Federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair unveiled his shadow cabinet on Thursday, and Stetski was appointed as the critic for National Parks “Based on my background, my experience and my interests, both personally and professionally, I had National Parks at the top of my

list,” Stetski said. “We are the riding that has the most number of national parks than any other riding in Canada. We’ve got four very large and important parks here in Kootenay-Columbia—Kootenay, Yoho, Mount Revelstoke and Glacier.” Stetski said National Parks were hit hard through cuts to funding and staffing by the Conservative government over the last 10 years.
