CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
There may not have been a knock out blow, but there were quite a few shots delivered on Oct. 7 at the all-candidates forum at GFSS. More than 200 people showed up for the forum, which was sponsored by the Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce. All five candidates were in attendance: Richard Cannings, NDP; Samantha Troy, Green; Marshall Neufeld, Conservative; David Gray, independent; and Connie Denesiuk, Liberal. Michael Strukoff was the moderator and asked the first couple of questions including how would you ensure that the Boundary was well represented in the Southern Okanagan-West Kootenay riding. In her answer, Denesiuk mentioned her experience as a school trustee and president of the B.C. School Trustees Association and that she knows “how important it is that all voices are heard equally.” “I’ve been spending a lot of time out in the riding and making sure I’ve been having Coffee with Connie and Campfires with Connie,” she said, “(I’ve been taking advantage of) every opportunity to meet with people in the community. I want to learn the issues so I can properly represent people.” Troy said that living in Rossland, she is a neighbour to those in the Boundary. “Being in Rossland, I think I’ve got more accessibility to the communities on this side of the riding,” she said. “My issue will be more about how to connect with constituents in the Okanagan.” Troy said if she was fortunate enough to win she would open up offices both in Rossland or Trail and in the Okanagan to have a • See FORUM page A8
Reach for the clouds Grand Forks volunteer firefighters held their annual Ladder-A-Thon on Friday and Saturday at the Overwaitea parking lot. The event, which had to be postponed in August due to the wildfires, raised money to help those affected by the Rock Creek fire. The event featured firefighters spending an hour up the ladder on the new fire truck. There was also hot dogs and popcorn sales on site. Craig Lindsay photo

The latest issue of Black Press’ popular lifestyles magazine Route 3 is now available on newsstands and at coffee shops around the region. The cover story by Will Johnson looks at TheLineUp, a live show at Nelson’s Shambhala Hall hosted by Jenna Raider that mixes interviews and performances. It also gives Selkirk College students experience at creating a TV show, as the segments are filmed and posted online. Sheri Regnier recounts the long history of the Trail Times, which turns 120 this year. Founded in 1895 by W.F. Thompson as the Trail Creek News, it has undergone several name and ownership changes but has always been an integral part of the community. Andrew Tripp takes us on a tour of Route 3 through the West Boundary, stopping at historic buildings

of Sufferfest, the annual race between Nakusp, Kaslo, and New Denver which includes trail runs, mountain biking, cyclocross, and duathlon events. Created six years ago, the event continues to grow. Participants have tripled and there are plans for a new winter triathlon. Finally, Craig Lindsay examines how the first year has gone for the Grand Forks and Boundary Regional Agriculture Society’s mobile abattoir since passing inspection. Turns out it has been extremely busy and a boon to local ranchers.
