Assaults on bus drivers on the rise Pamela Roth Victoria News

Ben Williams is frustrated and angry.

Ever since he heard about the latest attack on a bus driver in Victoria last week, the president of Unifor Local 333 (the union representing bus drivers) has been trying to wrap his head around the incident, and why attacks on bus drivers are on the rise.

The latest attack unfolded around 1:30 p.m. last Friday when a male passenger asked to get off at a decommissioned bus stop at Kings Road and Douglas Street.

According to police, the driver told the passenger he would have to get off at the next stop. In response, the passenger attacked the driver while the bus was in motion.

The driver managed to pull the bus over at the intersection of Douglas and Bay streets, but the attack continued as other passengers got off the bus. The suspect eventually fled the scene when the driver got off the bus. He was quickly located and arrested by police, and now faces charges of assault causing bodily harm.

Williams has yet to speak to the driver, who was left with lacerations on his face and bruising on his sides. A driver himself, Williams called the incident completely unacceptable.

“The operators out there are just trying to carry out the course of their duties. People should be able to go to work without fear of being assaulted,” said Williams. “There’s definitely a heightened concern that the smallest little thing seems to set people off.”

When Williams began his career 16 years ago, there was maybe one to six reports a year of drivers being spit on by unruly passengers.

Now, he said it’s not uncommon to have drivers spat on three or four times during a weekend. Verbal altercations are also now happening on a daily basis, and Williams isn’t sure why.

“People wouldn’t walk into a bank and if they don’t like what they hear, they spit into a teller’s face,” he said. “I’m not sure why they feel that way about a transit operator.”

Nestled in a home adjacent to both Victoria and Oak Bay, NDP MP candidate (incumbent) Murray Rankin, holds a certain fondness for the group that was once called the Western Canada Wilderness Committee.

“Linda and I met at one of the early meetings of what’s now the wilderness committee … she was a student and government worker and I was a new law professor at UVic,” he says of his wife Linda Hannah.

Rankin was integral Murray Rankin in those early years, joining the board and founding the organization. But more importantly, he met and married Linda and had sons Ben, now an economist in Ottawa, and Mark, who recently moved back to Victoria for work.

The family lived in Fairfield for 24 years before downsizing to another home adjacent to Oak Bay. With his sons hitting a certain age, and rapidly gaining independence, Rankin was looking for a change already when Victoria’s NDP MP Denise Savoie resigned her post in August 2012.

“I thought ‘This is not a government that should last. It’s not consistent with my values or the values of the people of Victoria’.”

He hit the campaign trail, primarily by bike, and with thoughts of his 28 and 25 year old sons.

“I see amongst their generation so much dissatisfaction and cynicism of the democratic process. … They don’t have the kind of steady employment I have and so many of my generation have,” Rankin says. “I just really feel we’re leaving this generation with the largest ecological, social and economic debt in history.”

“I just had to step up and say I’m not going to let this happen if I can make a difference.”

Murray draws on his decades of legal expertise and political acumen, despite little previous experience as a politician.

“If people want a career politician they shouldn’t look to me. … I had the experience of running the law firm, but I’d never run for office before,” he says.

“Some people think it’s a virtue to not be a career politician … We need people in the House of Commons from all walks of life, I think.”

Why are you running in the federal election? That’s a question Green Party candidate Jo-Ann Roberts has been asked a lot during her quest to become the next MP for Victoria.

A veteran journalist for 37 years who is best known as the host of the arts and current affairs program All Points West on CBC Radio One in Victoria, Roberts left her job to speak out about the government’s current vision for Canada.

Jo-Ann Roberts “It was not my vision. I felt that in this election I had to be free to do something more active than what I was able to do with the CBC,” said Roberts, who initially planned on leaving her job to be an advocate.

“It became pretty obvious that one of the best ways to be part of the discussion is to run as a candidate. When I read vision Green, it felt like it fit with my values.”

According to Roberts, Victoria is a unique and green city that wants a member of parliament that can bring that vision and experience to the rest of the country.

What she’s noticed from going door-todoor is people are somewhat living in fear about the possibility of having another Conservative majority.

“They are trying to figure out the best way to stop that,” said Roberts, who believes she can speak strongly on social issues, climate issues, and crown corporations like CBC and Canada Post.

“We’re doing a lot of things really well here. We understand how to take on the issue of climate change better than any parts of the country. That’s something we can share with the rest of Canada.”

Roberts first began working for the CBC in 1976, starting her career on the East Coast. She entered journalism to inform listeners and affect positive change for Canada, and is the recipient of numerous journalism awards.

Roberts is married to Ken Kelly, an urban planner who is the general manager of the Downtown Victoria Business Association. The pair have four adult children, Christoper, Claire, Alyson and Meghan, and are expecting their first grandchild in April.

John Rizzuti wants to turn Victoria into a vibrant community supported by quality jobs, growing economy and safe communities.

The Conservative candidate, running in the Victoria riding, is a retired school principal and business owner who has lived in Victoria for the last 47 years with his wife Marilynne, three children and six grandchildren.

“For me, it’s time to give back to the community and serve it some more,” Rizzuti said. “I care about John Rizzuti Victoria. I want to make sure it gets the best it can and I want it to continue to be a vibrant city for all of us and anyone who wants to visit or settle here in the future.”

Rizzuti, 66, has worked in seven schools throughout the Victoria region during his more than 30-year-career. He started as a principal in 1983 and retired from Wishart Elementary in the Sooke School District in 2005. He also served as the president of the B.C. Principals’ and Vice-Principals’ Association and on municipal, private company and volunteer boards.

He has a masters in education from the University of Victoria.

If elected, Rizzuti said he hopes to sustain a strong economy, keep streets and communities safe, while also balancing economic and environmental responsibilities. He will also advocate for more support for housing.

Locally, his focus will be on finding ways to support tourism, the Inner Harbour, transportation, technology, and arts and culture in the city.

“Running schools, my job was to make sure that I ran the school in a responsible and fiscally responsible way that promoted the success of families and children and that I kept them safe and secure,” he said.

“For me, what I’m doing right now is a much larger scale of that and that’s what inspires me, that’s what motivates me. I have a passion for this city and I want to see us be the best that we can be.”

This is Rizzuti’s first campaign for federal office, but ran unsuccessfully to a trustee for the Greater Victoria School District in November.

He was acclaimed in early March to represent the conservatives in the federal election.

Cheryl Thomas can honestly say her political roots run deep.

Not only was her great-grandmother active in the campaign for women’s right to vote, but her grandfather had the distinction of running against Tommy Douglas early in his career.

Today, Thomas brings a long history of community and political involvement to her position as a Liberal candidate in the Victoria riding.

Cheryl Thomas “I’ve always been involved behind the scenes and I’ve run both provincial and federal campaigns, so I understand the chaos of an election,” she says.

Passionate about cultivating leadership and collaboration, Thomas is an educator of leadership and teamwork, both here at home at the University of Victoria and previously at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, in addition to Royal Roads University and Camosun College.

With her children grown and having returned from eight years teaching overseas, the time was right for her to run as a candidate herself, she says.

“While abroad, I saw Canada’s image eroding considerably ... I have five-yearold and nine-year-old grandsons and this is not the world I want them to grow up in,” Thomas says.

Born in Saskatchewan and raised on a farm in Stettler, Alta., where her father was a veterinarian, the message growing up was one of building society and community. “That’s part of who I am,” she says.

“I guess I’m an idealist; I keep thinking we have to do better than we have.”

After moving to Greater Victoria in 1990, Thomas was a leader in the Parent Advisory Councils at Willows Elementary and Oak Bay High. She served on Victoria’s Film Commission for six years and currently serves on the boards of the Victoria Harbourside Rotary Club and the Oak Bay United Church.

Councillor wants public to know more about amalgamation Pamela Roth Victoria News

An Esquimalt councillor is hoping an upcoming public forum will give the public a fair chance to understand what amalgamating with 13 municipalities in the Greater Victoria area would truly mean.

“I believe the

public hasn’t had fair and equitable access to opposing the view,” said Beth Burton-Krahn, one of the organizers of the Rethinking Amalgamation forum at Camosun College next week.

what amalgamation really means, what the research shows, what the stories are from other regions, but also more importantly a much better understanding of our current system.”

The issue of amalgamating the region’s 13 municipalities has been ongoing for a number of years.

Greater Victoria has a population of approximately

335,000 people, and the region is governed by 91 councillors and mayors.

During last November’s municipal election, Victoria, Esquimalt and six other municipalities

had questions on the ballot about reducing the number of municipalities in Greater Victoria through amalgamation.

favour, but BurtonKrahn noted that the municipalities were scattered with their questioning — only Victoria and Langford asked citizens directly if they were interested in amalgamating.

In Esquimalt, residents were asked if they were interested in having a study done on amalgamation and looking at options for better service alignment. If there had been an opposing view on the ballot, Burton-Krahn believes the results could have been much different.

“Certainly on the street people would have their opinions, so they have done their reading or research, but there was never any kind of opposition movement. It was probably because the gist was that this was driving towards a study. It wasn’t a binding question,” said Burton-Krahn, who’s opposed to amalgamation.

“It’s because of the loss of representative democracy. Let’s talk service delivery, let’s get our focus on doing better regionally and inter municipally.”

Superheroes invade Victoria Kendra Wong Victoria News

Mark Ashfield isn’t ashamed to admit he’s a massive dork.

“I’m big into superheroes. They got me through when I was growing up and I was in a children’s hospital on the east coast,” said Ashfield, a Fernwood resident.

He was born with fetal alcohol syndrome, which means a lot of time spent with massive migraines in the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

“I was in constant pain as a child. There was really no relief for it — they tried everything from medication to drugs, different kinds of therapy,” he said.

“Superheroes were kind of my escape.

Very early on my grandfather, my hero, starting bringing me superhero novels because he knew I liked comic books.

He used to think you’ve got an amazing imagination. There are the words, paint the picture.”

Ashfield attributes his creativity and the beginning of Superheroes of Victoria to that.

Victoria is a local volunteer group that dresses up as superheroes to help raise money and awareness of charitable organizations such as the B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Their mandate is to provide volunteers for any charity that needs them. They’ve made appearances with the MS society, kids baseball clubs and Five Hole for Food, attending roughly four to five events a month.

“We also want to help run games, set things up, tear down, anything they need us to do, that’s what we’re there for,” said Ashfield, adding everyone has the superpower to help people. “So a kid gets to meet Batman, but they also see Batman helping out. We’re trying to teach kids about community and helping others.”

On Sunday, Sept. 13, Victoria residents have the opportunity to get their photo taken with more than 50 of their favourite superheroes as part of the sixth annual photo shoot fundraiser.

The Superheroes of Victoria, a volunteer organization, is hosting its annual photo shoot on Sunday, Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Centennial Square. of it is just acting with compassion and empathy,” said Elizabeth Hall, marketing director with Superheroes of Victoria. “The simplest thing like smiling at a stranger, doing something nice for someone, taking a donation down to the Mustard Seed — those are superhero things to do.”

The event, includes a selfie booth, cape maker, face painting and a number of prizes that participants

can win such as gift certificates, bikes, and an electric scooter that will be designed to look like a superhero’s cycle.

Last year, the group raised roughly $3,600 for B.C. Children’s Hospital and saw between 1,200 to 1,400 people. They’re hoping to double that this year.

Attacks on bus drivers pathetic What’s with the losers attacking city bus drivers in the Greater Victoria area? It was surprising to hear that a bus driver was attacked last week after he told a passenger they could no longer get off at a decommissioned stop at Kings Road and Douglas Street.

It was even more surprising to hear that attacks on bus drivers are on the rise.

In the latest incident, the passenger proceeded to beat the driver while the bus was moving. The attack continued even when the driver managed to pull the bus over at the intersection of Douglas and Bay streets. What’s even more sad is that passengers got off while the attack continued. Why didn’t anyone intervene?

The attack eventually stopped once the driver got off the bus and the suspect fled the scene. He was quickly picked up by police and now faces charges of assault causing bodily harm. Thank goodness he’s still not on the prowl. Who knows what other crimes someone with a temper like this are capable of committing.

This driver was simply doing his job. He didn’t wake up that morning expecting to be attacked for informing a passenger about a decommissioned bus stop. What’s even scarier is this happened in the middle of the day.

We don’t lash out at bank tellers or cab drivers when they inform us about minor inconveniences we don’t necessarily want to hear, so what gives someone the right to hit a bus driver?

The fact that assaults – whether it be verbal or physical – on bus drivers is on the rise is alarming. It’s a sad day when protective barriers have to be installed on city buses so drivers can come home unharmed at the end of a work day.

Readers respond: Green party signs, students and politicians Green Party signs show disrespect for environment I take exception to the Green Party placing hundreds of signs on public property in the Victoria area. Victoria and other island municipalities need regulations and fines for such activity, as exist in the City of Vancouver. Political signs belong only on private property as an indication of individual or business support for a particular candidate. From arriving on the ferry to taking visitors on a tour of Dallas Road, the area is littered and defaced with Green Party signs on public property. As a member of the public who owns this property, I believe it shows disrespect for our environment.

I am not impressed by Green Party hypocrisy.

Trudeau’s pledge sounds familiar If Justin’s Trudeau’s pledge to fix up our economy by fixing up roads and bridges that are supposedly in state of disrepair sounds familiar, it should. It sounds familiar for those of us who remember another election 22 years ago and a Liberal Leader named Jean Chretien.

The numbers showed most Canadians felt it was time to replace our Conservative government. 2. If you didn’t do what you did for a living, what would you be?

I am a physiotherapist by profession and currently a municipal politician. Both are jobs to facilitate better quality of living for people.

But you ask what else? I reinvented my physio practice businesses several times in several areas. My last dream challenge for this was to do a floating day spa on a lovely boat.

3. What’s playing in your music player right now?

My CD tray has Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen, Il Divo, Joe Cocker, and Tchaikovsky Sleeping Beauty.

Criticism without constructive ideas for improvement.

5. What’s the best thing about living in Esquimalt?

Best thing about living in Esquimalt and this region is everything. We often forget how lucky we are to be at the ocean, with mountains as a backdrop, and moderate climate year round. Live somewhere else in Canada for awhile and you recognize how amazing this region is.

6. Where were you born?

Niagara -on-the-Lake, Ontario – a small town with amazing historic and military history, not to mention a success story in developing itself as a tourism and cultural place to go.

7. Which person, alive or dead, would you have dinner with?

My husband and family whom I don’t get the chance to sit down with altogether very often.

Why You Need Vitamin C and Lysine for Heart Health and More...

itamin C is arguably the single most important water soluble antioxidant in the human body. Antioxidants play a key role in protecting cells against free radicals, which can cause damage and play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases.

It’s tragic that researchers are unaware that high doses of vitamin C and lysine cannot only prevent, but reverse atherosclerosis in coronary and other arteries in the body.

Vitamin C is needed for the manufacture of collagen, the glue that holds cells together. A lack of vitamin C means poor collagen, resulting in cracks appearing between coronary cells thus setting the stage for fatal blood clot.

Recently, Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, made this monumental discovery. He took photos of the retinal arteries and then gave patients 6,000 milligrams of vitamin C and 5,000 of lysine (lysine adds strength to coronary arteries just like steel rods increase the strength of concrete). A year later he repeated the pictures. To his surprise, he found atherosclerosis fading away.

The essential amino acid lysine is probably best known for its use in those with herpes simplex infections but several other benefits have been ascribed to the molecule, including favourable effects on blood pressure and stroke prevention but also a positive influence on mood and anxiety.

In addition to providing healthy collagen production and a healthy cardiovascular system, vitamin C and lysine supplementation helps support: • Immune system health • Vision • Teeth and gums • Wound healing • Bones and cartilage • Recovery from shingles • Recovery from herpes outbreaks This is why I’ve been taking high doses of vitamin C and lysine for the last 16 years following a heart attack. The start of a new school year signals many things for thousands of children around Greater Victoria: back to daily routines, homework, reconnecting with friends again — and the less desirable, lice.

According to Priti Bhathella, a pharmacist at Elements Compounding Pharmacy, she sees the most cases of lice are at the beginning of summer and the start of the school year.

Lice are tiny insects that live on the human scalp and feed on human blood. There are three life cycles of head lice: they start as a nit in the egg stage, in eight or nine days emerge as nymphs and

will grow into adults with an average lifespan of 30 days.

Now is the time of year to watch out for those infestations.

Bhathella says even though lice is prevalent among all age groups, it’s most commonly found in kids three to 12 years of age.

But there are a few common misconceptions about lice that Bhathella hopes to clear up.

1. Lice jump from person to person.

Lice only spread by headto-head contact and sharing personal items such as hair brushes, towels or hats.

“They crawl fast, but don’t jump. You have to have direct head-to-head or hairto-hair contact.”

2. It is an indication of poor hygiene.

“Head lice are found everywhere, it’s not an indicator of poor hygiene because they can bind to both clean and dirty hair,”

said Bhathella.

3. Lice infestations occur in people from lowerincome families.

“A lot of people are embarrassed, they’re whispering and I always tell them it has nothing to do with hygiene, it’s a condition that you treat just like anything else,” she says.

If there is a lice infestation at school, Bhathella says it’s important not to panic and rush into treatment before being properly diagnosed by a doctor. “[Doctors] are going to know what they’re looking for and what guidelines to follow before we treat,” she says. “If a school says there’s a lice infestation, parents may jump to conclusions and think they need to treat. But make sure you have an active case before you treat.”

“One of the biggest hurdles is older treatments such as insecticide products. They attach to the nervous system of the lice and

“People feel they have to shave their head, but you need to think of the impact for a child,” she explains.

“You don’t need to go that route. I think the key is talk to a health care professional so we can have successful treatments.”

“My dad and mom’s dream, when we came here, was to open up a souvlaki place. Back in the late ‘70s, early ‘80s, there wasn’t anything in Victoria,” he said.

After working in several local restaurants for the next few years to learn the language and tricks of the trade (and taking out a second mortgage on the family townhouse), Eugene opened a souvlaki restaurant with homemade spanakopita, hummus, gyro and tzatziki recipes.

On November 24, 1979, Eugene’s officially opened on Fort Street.

At one point, the business had expanded to include three Eugene’s restaurants around the Island.

Though they have since closed the restaurants, they continue to sell their comfort food using the original recipe from 36 years ago to grocery stores around the Island

through Eugene’s Wholesale Greek Food.

Vassiliadis, who knows the ins and outs of cleaning, prepping and cooking, no longer scrubs dishes and tables, but instead has taken over the business from his parents when they retired.

Now, his brother Terry and his partner are expanding the businesses again and opening the Village Taverna that will sell food using the same recipes, among other things.

“It was time for me to step out on my own from the family partnership that allowed me to have a little more creativity and start fresh,” Terry said.

“When we started, we knew it was a good product that we were putting out there. Customers had become familiar with the taste.

We want to continue with that.”

Golf club gears up for KidSport tournament A local golf club is gearing up to host a tournament to raise money to send children in need into a sport of their choice for the upcoming season in Victoria.

As part of B.C.’s first annual KidSport Week, the Victoria Golf Club is hosting the Men’s Links to Change on Saturday (Sept. 12).

“We are truly grateful to the Victoria Golf Club for hosting this men’s tournament to benefit children in need, at such an exciting time for KidSport,” said Patti Hunter, general manager of KidSport Victoria.

“Every $400 raised will fund a child, who otherwise couldn’t be on the field of play, into a season of sport.”

Last year, the tournament raised more than $25,000 for the organization — enough to send 100 children into organized sports for the year.

Tournament registration is $185, which includes golf, contests, food and beverage on course, dinner/reception following the tournament, prizes and a tax receipt. Registration and lunch begins at noon and tee off is at 1:30 p.m.

KidSport Greater Victoria was formed in 2000 and provides grants for sport registration fees for children from low-income families.

Victoria currently has the highest number of heritagedesignated homes in the region, leaving Saanich’s planning department wondering if misconceptions are leading potential homeowners away from the process.

Cougars’ Ciurro ready to hit the ice Don Denton Victoria News

Arizona athlete Anthony Ciurro has returned for his second season stopping pucks for the Victoria Cougars after a summer of keeping in shape with roller hockey. Ciurro grew up playing roller hockey and it’s his way of staying in top hockey form during the off-season.

The native of Peoria, Arizona, about 20 minutes outside Phoenix, is happy to be back in Victoria and playing for the Cougars. Ciurro started his Canadian hockey career last year with the Campbell River Storm, but played only one pre-season game in the north island city before being traded to Victoria.

He couldn’t be happier living and playing hockey in Victoria. “(It’s been) unbelievable, the best experience of my life,” said Ciurro. “The team is really prestigious and is a great organization to

play for.”

Ciurro said his goal this year is simple: to win games, and he’s excited to have the Cyclone Taylor Cup here.

Ciurro is reserving judgement on who the team’s top competition will turn out to be until they’ve played some regular season games, but figures the Campbell River Storm will be a top team again this year.

It can be lonely playing far from home, but Ciurro’s parents made the trip north once last year to see their son in goal and are planning two trips to Victoria this year.

Looking ahead to the start of the 2015-16 season, Ciurro said he was just happy to be back playing with the Cougars again.

The Cougars’ next home game is Thursday, Sept. 17 against the Westshore Wolves at the Archie Browning Sports Centre. don.denton@vicnews.com

Whether it was the whale spotting while aboard the Confederation Ferry (from PEI to Nova Scotia), or jumping for joy when meeting the world’s largest lobster in Shediac, NB, or just taking a scenic run along the St. John river in Fredericton, NB, I wouldn’t say I’m a veteran when it comes to the lay of the land in the Atlantic provinces, but the next time I go, it won’t be my first rodeo.

It was 10 years ago when the Irwin family was told daughter Daisy was diagnosed with infant leukemia.

She was only 10 weeks old.

Daisy made it clear she wasn’t going anywhere without a fight. After three rounds of chemotherapy as well as a bone marrow transplant, her cancer went into remission.

“Her statistics were very grim, so we’re very fortunate to have her,” said Patrick Irwin, her father.

This September officially marks 10 years of Daisy being cancer-free, which is why the Irwins will hold a party at the Sooke Flats this Sunday (Sept. 13), from noon to 3 p.m. to celebrate that triumph over the disease, with all proceeds going to Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. The public is invited.

“We’re calling it Sister Celebration because we’ve got four daughters. We’ve always done something on the anniversary of her bone marrow transplant,” Irwin said.

Rescue, as well as many others pitching in, this is going to be quite the party. Food and beverages will be available on site, including a lemonade stand set up by the Irwin girls.

Among the attractions will be a fire truck and a police car. Present will also be Daisy’s first Tour de Rock rider, RCMP officer Tasha Adams. Adams took part in the event eight years ago for Daisy, and was posted to Ottawa five years ago.

Daisy, a junior rider on Tour de Rock, has two riders riding for her in this year’s event.
