A Nanaimo woman is lucky to be alive after a fire gutted her mobile home early Thursday morning. Firefighters were called by the woman (identified by friends and neighbours as Doreen Lord, 75) at approximately 4:40 a.m. to her residence in Petroglyph Mobile Home Park. Neighbours said flames were 20 feet in the air by the time fire personnel arrived. The woman was able to exit her home by herself and met neighbour and close friend Jean Pilgrim outside. “She knew something was

wrong because her TV was off and she sleeps in her bedroom with her TV on. She thought the hydro went out, got up, went to the bathroom and turned on the light, and could see smoke,” Pilgrim said. “She didn’t have her walker with her because it was in the car, (but) she was able to make it downstairs, unlock her trunk and get her walker out.” Pilgrim’s home, which is located directly beside her friend’s, sustained minor heat damage, as did the homes of neighbours Larry Parson and Chris Mundreon. “My roommate woke me up and said that the neighbour’s

trailer is on fire. I jumped up. We were out here — the flames were 20 feet in the air, sparks flying everywhere. All the neighbours came out and were all freaked out,” Mundreon said. Several plastic fittings of Larry Parson’s car, which was parked next door, were melted and two of his windows smashed from the heat. Parson woke up to the sound of the fire burning. “The firefighters did a good job, I told them that too,” Parson said. Lord’s cat, Daisy, bolted outside when Lord left her burning home. She was later reunited with the

cat and the two of them are now in Duncan staying with Lord’s family members. Firefighters were canvassing the neighbourhood Thursday afternoon handing out information pamphlets. Investigators were also at the home Thursday afternoon and said the cause is still under investigation.

The Nanaimo RCMP wants the public’s help identifying a suspect in a pair of recent armed robberies. Police have released stills from video footage of the incidents, which took place on Aug. 13. The first happened at the 7-Eleven on Terminal Avenue at 2:40 a.m., when a man wearing a wig and holding a knife demanded cash from a clerk. The man then ran away after being given the cash. He was wearing a red Hurley T-shirt and baggy grey sweatpants. The second robbery happened at 10:52 p.m. at the Esso gas station on Northfield Road, when a man, again wearing a wig and equipped with a knife, demanded cash. Const. Gary O’Brien said the Nanaimo RCMP believes the same man is responsible for both incidents. “Hopefully these pictures will assist the community in identifying this individual or provide information on the knife used,” O’Brien said. Anyone with information should call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
