Growers: ‘pretty close to shutting us down’ AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

An industry worth as much as $16 million to the regional economy has been hit by an oyster recall. “The CFIA (Canada Food Inspection Agency) has taken the easiest route and blamed the farmers, but our product isn’t the sole cause of this shutdown,” executive director of the B.C. Shellfish Growers’ Association, Roberta Stevenson, told The NEWS. Last week the CFIA issued a recall for oysters harvested in B.C. before Aug. 19 and intended for raw consumption, due to a risk of contamination by vibrio parahaemolyticus, but Stevenson said shellfish farmers don’t deserve all the blame. The Vancouver Coastal Health Authority had issued a public health warning about raw oysters in restaurants the week before. “That’s had a huge impact on us, pretty close to shutting us down,” said Sean Reid, president of the Bowser based Stellar Bay Shellfish. He said about 80 per cent of their product is shipped to the U.S. and the new B.C. testing requirements would delay things about three days, which is too long for fresh seafood. “That’s really cut off our access to the market. These are supposed to be temporary measures, but there is no indication from CFIA what will happen,” he said. He said they are making their case to the agency that it shouldn’t apply to companies like theirs that haven’t had any reports of illness or bad test results. “We’re working with the CFIA to try and ship product to the U.S. to wait there while we wait for the test results.” See MORE THAN 70 PEOPLE, page A6

to the metal, I did cause the horses to break into more than a gallop – zero to 100 km/h in just over 4.2 seconds. The Gran Coupe purrs along and effortlessly breezes by anything you choose it to pass. The sevenspeed Steptronic tranny offers seamless movement between the gears. I’m not the biggest fan of gearshift paddles but it was fun playing with them on a busy stretch close to my destination. Approaching the track, traffic slowed and for the first time I had time to admire the beautifully stitched leather interior and controls layout, all of which are definitely all ergonomically correct. The cockpit display takes its cues from the driving mode selected using the Driving Dynamics Control switch, the graphics and colors of the displays indicating clearly which of the COMFORT, ECO PRO and SPORT settings has been engaged. Very cool. And it’s loaded with every safety warning system you can think of: lane departure, pedestrian and collision warning. A mad cyclist warning system capable of evasive action would be a worthy addition for 2017. Write to keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Parksville mayor Marc Lefebvre said he’s been flooded with questions about varying water restrictions

within the regional district — and he’s seeking some standardization. “I’ve been getting some different comments regarding the levels of water conservation, they don’t seem

to be equal in all places of the RDN,” Lefebvre told staff and board members at the regular Regional District of Nanaimo meeting Tuesday night. See ANIMAL CONTROL, page A6
