Premier Christy Clark paid a visit to the Rock Creek fire evacuation center in Midway on Sunday afternoon to offer support to the evacuees and volunteers.

She spoke to numerous people directly affected by the fire, as well as spending time with the numerous local residents who have stepped up to help those displaced by the blaze.

During a later press conference, she outlined her government’s goals regarding fire preparedness and prevention.

“We need to build up our capacity to prevent and fight these fires,” said Clark. “Because the reality is that this isn’t going to be an unusual event in the future just in terms of the number of fires we have so we need to expand capacity.

The forestry ministry has done an incredible job of keeping people safe and protecting homes, but we want to have fewer fires and when we have fires we really want to tackle them and get them under control as fast as possible.”

Accompanied by MLA Linda Larson and Forestry minister Steve Thompson, Clark also responded to the possibility of the fire being human-caused, specifically by a motorist that threw a burning cigarette from their vehicle.

“I was told that there were witnesses and there may be a government video of somebody throwing a cigarette butt from a vehicle and if we can find evidence that a specific individual is responsible for this fire we are going to do whatever we need to and use all the tools available to ensure that people are held accountable for irresponsible behaviour,” said Clark. “We are having discussions right now across the province regarding potential penalties for those found throwing cigarette butts out of their car. Perhaps one of the penalties available is that we take away their car, or the use of their car for a period of time, though we have not decided anything yet.”

Clark thanked the residents of the Boundary for their contribution to the relief effort.

‘The people of Midway and Rock Creek have

really stepped up and for that we are so lucky,” she said.

When asked about the cost of fighting the fires this season, which has already hit $2 million, the Premier noted that because the province is in good fiscal shape, with a $1 billion surplus in the books, paying for the fire fighting efforts this sea-

son would be manageable.

“We won’t have to go into debt to pay for this”, said Clark.

The Premier also visited the town of Oliver to assess the damage caused by fires there, which was far less extensive than that precipitated by the fire in Rock Creek.

According to authorities, the Rock Creek wildfire spread to an estimated 3,750 hectares over the weekend. The fire remains zero per cent contained. In all, 30 homes and 15 other structures have been lost to the fire. Five hundred people were evacuated to Midway, while 116 went to Kelowna.

The wildfire west of Rock Creek is still 0 per cent contained and is an estimated 3,750 hectares. People from the surrounding communities have shown an outpouring of help as they have dominated food, water, toiletries, clothing and even opened their homes to stranded strangers.

Highway 3 from Osoyoos to Midway and Highway 33 from Beaverdell to Rock Creek were closed to traffic in both directions. Highway 3 was reopened to all traffic , while Highway 33 remains closed. On Friday, more than 330 households and over 600 people were evacuated from the area.

Alan Stanley, emergency response centre information officer, said it’s been a challenge organizing the evacuation but everyone in the community has been very supportive.

“Yesterday (Thursday) afternoon we became aware of the fire at around 1 p.m. and shortly after opened up the operations centre,” he said. “We spent most of the first part of the evening determining what areas had to be evacuated and issued the evacuation order. And then doing all the work to find safe evacuation routes and setting up reception centres.”

Stanley said it was particularly challenging due to the fact that they were sending people in four different directions due to the highway closures. On Friday, the RDKB emergency crews switched their focus mainly to helping the safety and comfort of evacuees.

“There were a lot of people that evacuated that weren’t very prepared,” said Stanley. “There were a number of reports of campers in Grand Forks with nothing but there bathing suits. They’re all now looked after thanks to the hospital auxiliary.”

Cathy Riddle, emergency social service director for the Midway evacuation centre, said Friday they got the call Thursday around 2 p.m. and have been busy since helping

out the evacuees.

“We started the planning as soon as we got the call,” she said.

“We knew we were going to have the need to help a lot of people when we found out the campground was on fire.”

Riddle said they had no problem amassing volunteers from the community to help out. She said they also worked with the Red Cross volunteers and firefighters who have been helping out at the evacuation centre.

A wildfire on the Paulson Pass grew rapidly on the weekend and is now at 260 hectares and still zero per cent contained.

A dozen Type 1 (most skilled) firefighters are on site along with heavy equipment. The fire is 10 km from Christina Lake.

Fire information officer Melissa Klassen says no residences or structures are in danger at this time.

“They are working on establishing containment,” she said. “We did see some spots cross over Highway 3; however, we

had some initial attack crew extinguish those spot fires. The goal is to keep the fire on the north side of the highway.”

Klassen said the highway is still open and has not been closed down.

“The fire is very visible from the highway,” she said. “We’ve had reports of people pulling over on that highway. That’s a concern given it’s always dangerous in the area of an active wildfire.”

Klassen said it’s important for people to keep going and not pull over due to the dangers.

“The road is open and we want to be able to keep it open,” she said. “As long as we have participation from the public,

and the public moves forward and not stop along the highway we can do that.”

Other fires of note The Lynch Creek fire is almost 20 hectares and remains zero percent uncontained. In initial attack phase.

Stickpin fire - The Washington state stickpin wildfire is still burning and is an estimated 6-7km from the Canadian border just south of Grand forks. It’s an estimated 15,000 hectares in size and zero per cent contained.

“Most of the growth of the fire did occur on Friday,” said Klassen. “It was shown a slower rate of spread. Today (Sunday)

they are experience some cooler temperatures and lighter winds which is aiding in fire suppresion personnel in establishing north containment.”

Klassen said crews may be conducting some burning operations which may produce more smoke, “fortunately, today (Sunday) the winds are forecast to come from the north/northwest. That should push smoke away from Grand Forks.”

Klassen said our Canadian service personnel are in constant contact with their American fire supression counterparts.

“We do have plans in place in the event that the fire does continue to approach the border,” she said.

So grateful for our time in Grand Forks Editor: In the summer of 1981 my husband and I moved to Grand Forks to teach at Hutton School.

Within days we had made enduring friendships and put down roots that quickly grew deep and strong.

We raised our daughters here and have repeatedly and happily welcomed them, and their young families, home.

Now, illness and the tug of children and grandchildren find us making a move that seems right to both head and heart but very bittersweet. Those roots are not lifting easily.

There are so many reasons to be grateful for our years in Grand Forks, most of them very personal, and I will express those privately. I do want to publicly acknowledge the kindness of our community as Dementia began eroding my husband’s cognition and his independence. For their acceptance and their compassion, I wish to thank the good people who work in safe and welcoming places, especially the Credit Union, Grand Forks Public Library, the Gem Theatre, and Overwaitea.

And to the staff of Hardy View Lodge, I owe you a huge debt of gratitude. I have, over the last 10 months, come to understand what “grace under pressure” truly means. I thought primary teachers had cornered the market on patience until I spent time with those who work in long-term care! Your extraordinary teamwork in response to the sprinkler- system flood was amazing but not surprising. You are our town’s unsung heroes.

Deer cull shouldn’t be allowed

Editor, The Gazette: In regards to the deer cull, I would like to say that I hope the people doing it (the cull) can look in the mirror each day and know what you are.

How anyone could kill any innocent animal is something I’ll never understand. As they (deer) stand and look at you with no fear and are killed for no reason is mindblowing.

Never forget the look in their eyes when years to come there is no wildlife. We may learn to regret what is happening.

I for one want my grandchildren and great-grandchildren to see nature at its best. I have talked to tourists who stop just to photograph the deer.

By my count I have never seen more than 30 to 35 deer in and around town.

Leave those deer alone Editor, The Gazette: Leave those deer to be. They are not harming anyone but some heartless individuals that wish to see them dead—you shall have the blood on your hands and conscience. Have a nice restful sleep.

Those deer are not asking for any hand-outs. All they want is to remain free to feed, raise their young and survive.

I for one enjoy feeding them in the winter time when the snow is on the ground, to see the contented looks on their faces. I have my rights and freedoms also.

Madam, what need have the deer for an extension ladder, to get higher up the apple tree? Hunting season is fast approaching, this would be the safest place to be within city boundaries as long as they can contend with speeding traffic and poaching, which is illegal.

I shall stand my ground and defend those deer that cannot speak for themselves to the best of my abilities.

Live and let live.

Global warming is real Editor: Looking at the smoky air and listening to the news about the latest wildfires near Rock Creek makes me won-

der if anybody still doubts that global warming is real.

It also makes me look back on 10 years of Harper’s utter failure to act on Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions.

In Harper’s world it’s either the economy or the environment. He chose the economy and now we’re losers on both fronts.

He’s mishandled the economy and we’re the laughing stock of the world over our environmental foot-dragging.

What we’re seeing in the Southern Interior right now is the new normal.

I believe the Liberal Party has the best plan and the best chance to take action on the environment and I hope it’s not too late. Please elect anybody but Harper in October.

Being water smart at a critical time Talk of water being our most precious resource is idle talk if, as a community of users, we are indifferent about protecting it. The Kettle River, the Granby River and the aquifer are critical to the survival of the community yet they are vulnerable to climate change, possible overuse, and contamination.

The provincial government would like British Columbians to be water smart. Water smart people use potable water sparingly knowing that they cannot assume that there will always be an unlimited supply by protecting wetlands, waterways and eco systems and using water sparingly.

They use water sparingly and they protect wetlands, waterways and eco systems.

Source water protection is an issue in the Kettle River watershed that councillor Colleen Ross wants city council to address in the form of a Source Water Protection Bylaw that would ensure that the water that flows in the Kettle and Granby Rivers is kept free of pollutants.

Ross will also be discussing the issue with councillors at the 2015 Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention in Vancouver from September 21-25.

While kayaking on both rivers earlier in the spring Ross was shocked by the presence of farm animals such as cows, llamas and goats in the water adjacent to farms. She did not like what she saw and is showing leadership by wanting to do something to change the status quo.

As a former resident of Ontario, Ross is familiar with the tragedy that occurred in the town of Walkerton in May 2000 following a heavy rain when manure washed into one of the community’s wells. People drank water that contained the deadly bacteria, E.coli 0157.H7. Three thousand people became ill and seven died. Many are still dealing with residual health issues.

The government of Ontario responded to the Walkerton tragedy with a Clean Water Act requiring all communities in the province to identify and assess the risks to their water sources, develop a source protection plan that sets out how the risks will be addressed and to carry out the plan and to stay vigilant through ongoing monitoring and reporting.

Wells that have not been properly sealed off are entry points for pollutants.

B.C.’s Water Sustainability Act (WSA) received Royal Assent on May 29, 2014. Water regulations will be in place in 2016. It establishes the broad legal framework for managing water in B.C. Regulations governing the application of the act will be published in 2016.

Councillor Ross may be successful in her efforts to get the council to pass a source water protection bylaw that the city can enforce yet she knows that the WSA and its accompanying regulations govern water use in B.C. A city bylaw would not apply to residents outside city limits who may act irresponsibly yet it could be the incentive for similar action at the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) level to cover Area C, Area D and Area E. The implementation of the Kettle River Watershed Management Plan may eventually offer residents the protection of the source water that is needed but its implementation will be a huge challenge for those doing the managing.

They know that monitoring the behaviour of the people who live and work within the watershed will be difficult in many cases. In a recent column Graham Watt, coordinator of the Kettle River Watershed Management Plan, provided examples of the excuses people make for not changing their water use habits. The rather lax approach to water management is no longer acceptable.

Councillor Ross’ concern about source water must be everyone’s concern and she is right to place it on the public agenda. There is no more important issue requiring the attention of those who use water.

Christina Creek Pedestrian Bridge

COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE Thursday, August 20, 2015 2:00 – 6:00 pm Christina Lake Community Hall 90 Park Rd, Christina Lake The Community Open House is an opportunity for the residents of the Christina Lake community to participate in the Christina Creek pedestrian bridge feasibility study. The open house event will provide residents with information about the project and the potential for a pedestrian crossing of Christina Creek, as well as provide an opportunity to view and comment on conceptual renderings of the proposed bridge. In addition, the open house will provide fun and interactive activities for residents to engage in, including a popsicle bridge building station for all ages. Most importantly, the open house enables area residents to personally meet the Christina Creek pedestrian bridge project team and provide their thoughts, opinions, comments, and feedback to them.

Despite being a couple of hours away, Grand Forks residents have pitched in and helped out with their displaced neighbours from the west.

Residents and businesses have donated much needed supplies such as food, water, blankets, toiletries and much more. Some locals even opened up their houses to evacuated friends and strangers alike.

When Jenna Edwards found the information on the wildfire lacking she started a Facebook page called Rock Creek Fire and Evacuation Information. She and her family also provided a warm and safe place to stay for 13 evacuees from the Kettle River Campground.

Edwards said she heard about the fire at work on Friday. She has a friend who worked with her at Boundary Lodge who lives in Westbridge area near Rock Creek.

“She called me at about 5 p.m.and told me she had to go home, they were evacuating her family and she had a bunch of livestock she had to deal with,” said Edwards. “I was trying to find information and I couldn’t find anything except on the What’s up in Grand Forks site. I thought, people in Rock Creek aren’t going to find this information. There not going to look under Grand Forks so I threw together a Facebook page and all the information kind of came together online.”

In only a day or so, the page grew to around 2,500 members and has become the info hub for many.

“I just wanted to find information in one spot,” she said. “That it has taken off so well that’s great.”

Correction

Clarification on RKDB briefs from the Aug. 12 Gazette: There has not been a suspension of development of OCP. In fact the RDKB has approved the steering committee and there will not be a vote held before proceeding.

There is no authority for regional districts to hold a vote as part of the planning process.

The process is set out in legislation, Part 26 of the Local Government Act. The legislation requires early and ongoing consultation with the public.

Edwards said her Facebook page has been a great way to link up organizations and businesses with people who need aid.

“With that, there was information about evacuees and where they were going,” said Edwards.

“I posted that we had enough room for 15 people if they needed it. There was a group of 13 people that was sent to us at 10:30 that night (Friday).”

Edwards said she was contacted by the Midway Evacuation Centre at 9 p.m. Friday and an hour or so later they had 13 people and a dog at their door step.

“They came from the campground and had nothing but the bathing suits they were wearing,” she said. “I put a call out on the website for blankets and pillows and they started arriving immediately. We made up our tent trailer and our bed and breakfast and we had a tent for the blankets and pillows.”

Once the group was settled Edwards put a call for food and once again businesses and residents stepped up with several donations. After breakfast, the group drove to Midway for an information session using a van donated by Katie’s Kiddy Kare.

“They found out that some of the campground did not burn down and there still may be some trailers standing,” she said. “They were then housed in hotels in Grand Forks with the disaster relief fund and they’ve been staying here waiting to get back into the campground. It was my understanding they couldn’t get back Saturday because of the winds.”

Edwards said the group was pretty calm considering the circumstances. “They were exhausted, I think, by the time they got here,” she said. “They’re pretty resilient. They were a great group. They might’ve been a little traumatized and in a state of disbelief but they were a strong, resourceful group.”

Edwards said some of the group were from the Shuswap area of B.C. and others were from the Calgary, Alta area.

Edwards added it that it was great to see all the communities come together. “I’m so proud of everybody,” she said. “It’s been unbelievable.

Funny, the day we were shipping loads away to Midway we thought should we be giving everything away because we could be in the same boat and they’d be sending it back to us.”

Despite being surrounded by wildfires, highway closures and plenty of smoke, the people of Grand Forks put the needs of others first.

Sun protection for Small Children Even if it isn’t sunny, your baby’s delicate skin can still burn, so it’s vital to protect her.

If your baby is younger than six months, keep her out of the sun altogether and stay in the shade. If you have an older baby or toddler, keep her out of the sun between 11 am and 3 pm, which is the hottest part of the day.

Before you go in the sun, apply sunscreen thickly to every area of your baby’s skin not covered by clothes or a hat, including her hands and feet. You may find it easier to apply the cream before you get your toddler dressed in the morning. That way, you can be sure you haven’t missed any patches.

Use a sunscreen specially formulated for babies and children, with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Make sure the sunscreen is a broad-spectrum brand with a four-star or five-star rating. This means it offers UVA and UVB protection, which will be stated on the packaging. After receiving input from residents regarding the water meter project, council has approved the water meter installation project timelines to go ahead.

At the regular council meeting on Monday, council voted to amend Water Regulations Bylaw No. 1973 A-1 to allow new timelines to complete the universal water metering program by Dec. 31 of this year. Council did some housekeeping on the bylaw as well changing some wording.

Dave Reid, manager of operations for the city, said the project is 71 per cent complete. The city has put out a request for proposal for a company to install the pit meters. They have also put out expression of interests for plumbers to install the remaining inside water meters.

“We’re just going through the RFP for the pit meters,” he said. “We are expecting to start in late September. The inside installations we’ll have expressions of interests out for plumbers who want to be part of the process. We’ll get to that at around the same time. We’ll have the same Neptune meters but with different installers.”

Council discussed different opt out options for residents. Currently, residents can choose between an inside meter or a pit meter, which is on the city side of the property line.

There was also discussion about a flat rate for those who refuse a water meter but staff said it wouldn’t appear to be feasible due to the expense involved.

Depending on the date and results of the city’s court case against councillor Julia Butler there could two spots up for grabs in the by-election.

“The city is legislatively required to hold the election within a certain amount of time,” said Winton. “We do not know when a decision will be made re: Butler so we have been advised by the province that we must move forward with a by-election for this particular seat.”

The B.C. local government act state that the chief election officer must set a general voting day for the election, which must be on a Saturday. A person elected in a by-election holds office until the end of the term of the office.

Winton said that the cost for the by-election would be between $5,000 and $8,000 to be paid for by the city. She said they have not determined whether they will use the electronic voting machines again in the by-election.

Local cyclist killed in accident in Colorado

A cyclist from Grand Forks died after crashing into a rock face on a sharp corner during a charity bike race in Morrison, Colorado on Aug. 8.

Bohdan Juzkiw, 66, crashed roughly 70 kilometres into the ride.

He died from injuries sustained in the accident, according to the Jefferson County coroner’s office.

Celia Evanson, President of Trails to the Boundary Society and Tennessee Trent, the acting provincial trails manager for MFLNRO Recreation Sites and Trails BC signed the partnership agreement between the Province of British Columbia and the Trails to the Boundary Society.

New trail agreement signed The Trails to the Boundary Society (TTTBS) will be assisting the province in maintaining the Kettle Valley Rail Trail and the Columbia and Western Rail Trail which is part of the TransCanada Trail from Eholt to McCulloch Lake, a distance of about 155 km. The total length of the southern BC Trans-Canada Trail is 1,750 km.

Ciel Sander, The trail coordinator for the society, said, “the Society’s mission is to promote the Trans-Canada Trail to align

it with tourism and sustainable development in the Boundary.

We want to engage with each of the local communities along the trail to find out what local residents and land owners perspectives are. We want to help determine how people are using the trail and what they would like to see in the future.”

Sander added, “We have already placed temporary signage to help trail users navigate and we are looking forward to improving some areas of the

trail surface near highway crossings. We seek volunteers from each of our communities along the trail to help with monitoring the trail, because it’s a big distance to cover.”

Grand Forks airport is home to new Skydrone training and services facility The City of Grand Forks is the only certified airport in British Columbia and one of two in Canada to provide advanced training and certification in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

Skydrone UAV Services in partnership with Western Aviation Services, is operating out of the Grand Forks airport under a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC).

To operate a commercial use Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) legally in Canada requires the operator to have successfully completed an approved ground and flight training program meeting Transport Canada standards in order to obtain a UAV Pilots Certificate. For each additional type of UAV to be flown, training specific to that type and model is required.

Transport Canada guidelines state UAV flight is restricted inside a nine kilometer area surrounding an airport, and can be no higher than ninety metres above the ground. Skydrone has been given exclusive authorization by Transport

Canada to train in the airport environment on an actual airport at Grand Forks. The emphasis is on training pilots to identify and react safely to complex environments they will encounter in industrial flight environments.

Skydrone UAV Services provide industrial aerial inspection, services that reach challenging locations without the assistance of support vehicles. These inspections are combined with thermal and high definition imagery providing reliable, cost effective, and safe industrial inspections on complex infrastructure like power lines, bridges, hydroelectric facilities and forestry and mining operations.

Other services include maintenance, design, training and consulting.

Airport fly-in cancelled due to wildfires CRAIG LINDSAY

The Grand Forks Airport Appreciation Day Fly-in has been cancelled due to the increased helicopter traffic with the wildfire activity in the area.

James Traynor, Grand Forks Flying Association president, said the club is disappointed but completely understanding

of the city’s decision to cancel the show.

“The City of Grand Forks has told us that due to the helicopter traffic out there people being air side is not safe,” he said. “It’s cancelled.”

Traynor said the club will meet this week and discuss the possibility of moving the fly-in into September.

“We kind of thought it (can-

cellation) might happen but we hoped that things had settled down,” he said, “But more and more helicopters are coming. People being air side in and around the rotary blades doesn’t work. It’s extremely dangerous; we don’t want anyone getting hurt. I totally understand (the decision).”

The fly-in was set for Sunday.

Although the number of vehicles were a bit less than organizers expected, but considering the highway closures and wildfires surrounding the area—the Park in the Park Car Show turned out very well.

“We were very pleased with the car show,” said co-organizer Melodie Davidoff, who runs the event along with husband Lawrence Morgan. “We were ecstatic when the fire trucks began to arrive. As our understanding (which was confirmed) was that they had cancelled all their events due to the fires.”

In all, 176 vehicles were registered as well as about a dozen fire apparatuses and 20 late vehicles. The car show was held on Sunday at City Park amidst sunshine and smoke in the distance.

“We know from phone calls we received that there would have been many more from the Okanagan, if Highway 33 had reopened.”

In addition to the classic cars and other automobiles, the show featured hula hooper Positive Erica, the RCMP rollover simulator, many vendors and a hot wheels track for the kids.

There was also a ride to Greenwood which culminated in a mini car show there. The riders also stopped at Silver Kettle Village before heading west to show off the cars to the residents there.

“We really would like to thank all the people from Vancouver Island and other areas west of Grand Forks for taking alternate routes to get to the car show,” said Davidoff. “We believe 2016 with no fires will be very large indeed.”

An unexpected turn of events involving the children causes further tensions to rise to the surface. And with the repercussions that ensue - hilarious and emotional in equal measure - the family is forced to put aside their differences and work together or else risk losing what they hold most dear.

The focal point of the gathering is the birthday of Doug’s dad, Gor-

die ( Connolly), donning a twinkle, granny glasses, long silver locks and a unique Scottish humour. The event, however, is commandeered by the self-serving grandiosity of Doug’s stuffy brother, Gavin (Ben Miller, The Armstrong and Miller Show), and his mousy wife, Margaret (Amelia Bullmore, several tv series, including Inspector Lewis).

The plot gets a tad stickier when the messy detail of Gordie’s struggle with cancer is made more poignant with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s.

What We Did on Our Holiday was written and directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, (both Drop The Dead Donkey, a satirical tv series and Outnumbered, where they likely honed their very apt skills at directing children) and won the London Critics Film Award For Best Actress (Pike).

It was also nominated for Best Picture for Hamilton and Jenking at the Valladoid International Film Festival.

What We Did on Our Holiday will be shown at the Gem Theatre at 7:30.

Work force training simplified The Lower Columbia Initiatives Corporation (LCIC) just launched an online calendar that will make it easier for businesses in the area to find professional development opportunities.

The LCIC’s Regional Business Training Calendar will connect organizations running training programs with local businesses in the area, all through one accessible interface.

The calendar was developed after the LCIC saw a need to simplify development and training for businesses in the area.

Both the Business Retention and Expansion project that the LCIC completed in 2013, and the Regional Skills Training Plan 2013-2020 developed by Selkirk College and College of the Rockies, identified work force development and training as an area that needed some attention.

“A lot of the businesses felt like they were a little overwhelmed with the ... business training happening through a whole bunch of organizations,” says Terry Van Horn, LCIC’s economic development coordinator.

Organizations that provide work force training in the area will add their upcoming courses to the calendar, which is posted not only on the LCIC website, but is also embedded on the websites of participating organizations.

Van Horn says Selkirk College, Community Future, and the Skills Centre have all embedded the calendar on their website.

“It’s a great start to be able to support local businesses, and that’s what LCIC is here to do,” says Van Horn. “To help [so] that they can get the training and the education that they themselves and their employees require to make sure that their labour force is as skilled as possible.”

Gallery Jordan Bennett Exhibition

Double-Header Opening at Gallery 2

August 22nd will be a busy day for Gallery 2 with the opening of two new exhibits featuring artists, Susan Andrews Grace, and Sonja Gartner.

Gartner, a selftaught painter, explores the complexity and spirituality of Mandalas, geometric figures that represent the universe in Hinduism and Buddhism.

“There is something inherently satisfying and healing about completing a piece that has hundreds or even thousands of wee bits that make up one big image.”, explains Gartner about her painting process.

Currently living in Nelson B.C, Grace is a visual artist working on textile pieces exploring the idea of the sacred and what we know, or don’t know about it. Her ‘Underwritten’ sculpture will be on display.

“Underwritten contemplates the language of earth’s beauty,” tells Grace about the meaning

of her piece, “When we think of the sacred we look up. Earth underwrites flesh and a morethan-human-dream we share with a cloud and the archetypal worm”.

The openings of each artist will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 22nd at Gallery 2. All are welcome and admission is by donation.

Bennett, from Mi’kmaq heritage and Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland, has had exhibitions around the world featuring his multi-disciplinary visual arts.

Venues such as The Museum of Art and Design, NYC, NY; Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Santa Fe, NM; Project Space Gallery, RMIT, Melbourne, AUS; Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, France; The Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver BC, to name a few.

Bennett’s art is influenced by his Mi’kmaq culture as well as his observations of historical and popculture, new media and political issues. By means of sculpture, sound installation, digital media, endurance performance, and other various mediums, he brings his art to us.

Along with his impressive resume of gallery exhibitions, Bennett was also named one of the Top 30 Under 30 Artists of 2014 by Blouin ARTINFO.

Local cadet is empowering others with self confidence

GREAT SUMMER EATS!

Staff Cadet Tai-Laun Mark from Grand Forks has been developing leadership and instructional abilities in 24 younger cadets in Victoria, B.C. He has attended summer training with the cadet program for the past two summers, moving from the two-week Basic Drill and Ceremonial Course to the six-week Drill and Ceremonial Instructor Course. He was then selected among 80 other cadets from across B.C. to teach the courses he once took.

The cadets on course come from all over B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northwest Territories. These courses are held at the Albert Head Cadet Training Centre,near Victoria.

Staff Cadet Mark, 18, is from 841 Squadron in Grand Forks. He has been a cadet for six years. He recently graduated from Grand Forks Secondary School and enjoys playing piano, basketball, rugby, soccer, karate and attending youth group outside of the Cadet Program.

This summer Staff Cadet Mark was hoping to be able to make the same positive impact on his cadets’ lives in the way that his Staff Cadets once did for him. The Staff Cadet experience is advanced training that allows the cadets to teach and lead the younger cadets in various subjects. In Staff Cadet Mark’s case, he has been instructing proper supervision and corrective action, leadership, rifle drill and flight drill.

Mark beamed about his experiences and feels that the Cadet Program and summer training helps

“This means a lot to be able to positively influence 24 cadets and make a change in their lives. Cadets is a great opportunity to experience, not only the aviation training, but also to develop oneself personally, build bonds and friendships. It’s like a secondary family,” Mark said.

More than 3,400 Sea, Army and Air Cadets are participating in summer training activities across B.C. this summer. Other cadets have had the opportunity to travel across the country and even overseas.

THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF GRAND FORKS

That time of the year Yes, it is that time of the year again at the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre where the staff takes the time to overhaul the facility are done. Annual painting, cleaning and any upgrades to the facility are thoroughly done during this time. The facility will be reopening on Sunday, September 13 from 1-5 p.m.

During the shutdown, we will continue to offer our circuit weight training classes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Earlybird classes will be offered from 6-7 a.m., morning circuit classes from 7:30- 8:30 a.m. and therapy circuit classes from 9-9:45 a.m. Membership cards can be used or a drop In fee will apply.

Our Fall programs are in place now. Saturday preschool swim lessons will take place from October 17 to November 14 between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Parent and Tot swim and play will be held in conjunction with the preschool swim lessons from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. This is a free program sponsored in part Success By Six and GFREC. The Lifesaving Society’s three-level Canadian Swim Patrol program provides enriched training for those who want to develop swim strokes and skills while having fun in the challenging world of life-

saving. Swim Patrol develops swimming strength and efficiency with emphasis on Water Smart® behavior. Skill drills enhance capability in the water, good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment.

Content is organized in modules – Water Proficiency, First Aid, Recognition and Rescue.

The Grand Forks Aquatic Centre will be offering a Fall Swim Patrol program for ages 8 to 15 years z GFREC on Saturdays from Report October 17 to November 14 from 11:45 a.m.

RECREATION Pre-registration is required by October 3.

Yoga classes provide an opportunity for strengthening and stretching your inner core muscles, making daily activities easier and more enjoyable.

GFREC will be offering a fall yoga program from September 28 to December 14 on Monday evenings from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Instructor Sarah Densmore has over 10 years of yoga experience and is certified with yoga alliance. Sarah will be offering a free yoga class on Monday, September 14 in the Arena Viewing room from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

UNIVERSAL WATER METER INSTALLATION PROGRAM The City of Grand Forks is excited to announce that the Universal Water Meter installations are in its final stages.

The City is currently contacting home owners who are on the waiting list for water meter installations to arrange for appointments throughout the next several months.

Please contact the City at 250-442-4148 if you did not receive a call by September 4th, 2015 to verify that you are on the list or if you wish to be added to the list.

At the same time, City employees will be inspecting the recommended outdoor pit meter installation sites to verify connection points and any installation concerns or challenges.

Ultimately, the City wants this process to go as smoothly as possible with the least amount of disturbance to our residents and home owners.

The City expects that the universal meter installations for inside and pit meters will commence Mid-September 2015.

The City would like thank everyone for their ongoing cooperation throughout the program.

Lucille Plain Jan. 8, 1923 – Aug. 10, 2015 It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Lucille Plain on Aug. 10, 2015 at the age of 92 at Ivy House in Grand Forks, B.C. with her beloved husband Jim by her side.

Lucille was born in Smoky Lake, Alberta on Jan. 8, 1923. She moved to Grand Forks with her family at the age of 8 years with her parents, seven sisters and four brothers and lived on a farm in the nursery area.

She attended school until grade 10. Lucille had a very long, busy, happy and exciting life with a few struggles along the way. She worked as a nurse’s aide until she went to Vancouver General Hospital to receive training as a pediatric nurse. She worked in hospitals in Trail, Grand Forks and Chilliwack to name a few.

Lucille had an infectious laugh and made everyone around her happy. She was a loving wife, sister and aunt and very generous with her time, love and helping others were needed. She also helped to fund training courses amongst her nieces and nephews as well as giving generously to many worthy causes.

The highlight of her life was biking across Canada from Vancouver to Newfoundland and a trip around the world with her second husband.

Lucille was predeceased by her parents Mike and Rose, sisters Elsie, Mary, Kay, Doris, Alice and Vera and brothers Alex, Fred, Peter and John as well as husbands Bill Warawa, Gerry LaPointe and William Clapper. She is survived by her husband Jim, niece Lee (caregiver) her sister Ollie (Herb) and many other nieces and nephews.

She left a very strong impression behind with whomever she met and will be sorrowfully missed by many family members, friends and acquaintances.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the nurses, care aids and kitchen staff at Ivy House for taking such good care of Lucille and her visitors.

You all went above and beyond. Your kindness will never be forgotten. A celebration of her life will be announced at a later date.

Bohdan (Bo) Juzkiw April 3, 1949 – August 8, 2015 Bo was tragically killed during the Red Rocks Century bike ride in Evergreen, Colorado. He was enjoying what he loved best to the very end, and did not suffer. In his final moments, he was surrounded by fellow cyclists who came to his aid.

Bo was born in Arenberg, Germany to Ukrainian parents who met in a displaced persons’ camp after WWII. He grew up in various parts of North America and married his wife, Janet Lucille, in Toronto in 1971. A steel fabricator by trade, his passion was bicycles and cycling. After living on the Lower Mainland for the past 25+ years, they decided to settle in Grand Forks in June 2009 and to make that their final move. He loved the beautiful roads in the area and the great local cycling community.

In addition to cycling, he loved his whippets, and was involved with the CWA whippet racing club, Racing For Fun, on the Lower Mainland, where he was the lure operator for their races for several years. His heart dog, Wylie, with whom he shared one-quarter of his life, and Pyro, will greet him at the Rainbow Bridge.

Bo leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Janet Lucille, sister Irene Juzkiw (Peter Mueser), mother (Maria Juzkiw), mother-in-law (Mildred Jordan), as well as cousins in the Ukraine. He was predeceased by his father (George Juzkiw) and father-inlaw (Howard Jordan). Also left to mourn are his 3 whippets, Percy, Pender and Brinley, members of the Grand Forks Cycling Club, and his extended dog show family on the Lower Mainland, throughout the west coast and beyond.

A cycling-related celebration of life is planned for later this fall.

Donations in Bo`s memory may be made to either Grand Forks Community Trails Society or the Grand Forks and District Public Library.

Bo was an unassuming person but generous in sharing his knowledge if asked. He will be so missed and will remain in our hearts forever.

Mary Dergousoff

Sadly the family of Mary Dergousoff, of Castlegar (formerly of Grand Forks) wishes to announce her passing at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital on Sunday August 9, 2015, blessed with 89 years of life.

Mary was born in Grand Forks on March 25, 1926 to parents Nellie and Fred Pepin.

Due to circumstance, at an early age, she had to spend some time in an orphanage. When the family was re-united Mary did not attend school much but still completed grade 6. In her younger years Mary worked in vegetable fields. Later in her teens, Mary worked in the Okanagan, picking and packing fruit. She also worked in a sawmill as a lumber tally person. Mary went through 3 marriages, in 1943, she married John J. Konkin of Grand Forks, in 1957, she married Mike Zarubin and in 1966 she married Konstantin Dergousoff. Mary started working, in 1969, in the kitchen of the Boundary Hospital and eventually worked up to being the breakfast cook and worked until she retired in 1989.

When her health started to fail, Mary moved to Castle Wood Village.

The KIJHL, which includes the Grand Forks Border Bruins, AGM was held in June this year in Osoyoos.

Both Quesnel and Williams Lake are being eyed as potential expansion teams as neither currently has any junior hockey teams and are considered prime targets. Neither city has applied at this point.

The KIJHL has introduced a 30-day suspension for players traded and failing to report to their new team. The intent of the new rule is to help protect smallmarket teams that often see players refusing to report and up dealing said player for little to no return.

There was talk at the meeting of shortening the length of the championship play-off series but it was voted down.

All play-off series remain best-of-seven.

The Revelstoke Grizzlies have been accepted as a member of the KIJHL in good standing after playing last season under probation as per league rules for new owners.

Mary was a longtime member of the USCC and belonged to the Grand Forks Cooking Groups. She was a gracious hostess and a prolific cook. She enjoyed travelling and made trips to the Philippines, Thunder Bay, Disneyland and Tijuana, Mexico.

Left to mourn her loss is her daughter Kathy (Lawrence) Popoff of Castlegar; son Bill Zarubin of Grand Forks; step-sons Wallace (Mary) Dergousoff, Leonard (Gladys) Dergousoff and Peter (Dorothy) Dergousoff; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

Funeral Services were officiated by Larry Jmaiff at the Grand Forks USCC Centre on Friday, August 14, 2015 followed by interment in Sion Cemetery.

Arrangements were in care of Castlegar Funeral Chapel.

After a diligent search and interview process, the Bound-

ary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce board is pleased to announce that a new executive director has been appointed.

Kathy Wright is moving from Athabasca, Alberta, to assume the executive director position.

She is leaving her

position with Community Development and Tourism with the Town of Athabasca, a position she has held since 2010.

filled a variety of roles there with promotion, budgeting, volunteer coordination, and membership, and worked closely with

a board of directors.
