Kimberley Community Band in the Platzl The Band played a large variety of 14 songs for another large relaxed crowd on August 6. The well-rehearsed selections included Army of the Nile (Written in 1941 by F. J. Ricketts, a Bandmaster in the British Army), Swing the Mood (a fusion of rock and roll and In the Mood), a Greek folk song, Movie Marches, It’s a Small World, Blues Brothers Review, I Dreamed a Dream (a lament from Les Misérables), a Sound of Music medley, Lord of the Dance, Hallelujah, more Music of the Beatles, St. Thomas (jazz with a Caribbean vibe), Invercargill (with a young conductor from the audience; Ian may be replaced!), and ended with Don’t Cry For Me Argentina. A lot of wonderful music on another beautiful evening in Kimberley’s Platzl.

McCormick continues to pursue changes to Resort Municipality funding Mayors to meet with Minister Bond at upcoming UBCM C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

As Kimberley Council voted last week to sign the necessary papers that will allow them to receive money in 2016 and 2017 from the Resort Municipality Initiative, Mayor Don McCormick explained that he continued to work towards a different RMI funding formula. The RMI provides funding for 14 resort municipalities in

the province. Funding is arrived at through a complicated formula based on number of beds, and must be used for tourism infrastructure projects. Kimberley has used its funding in recent years to help pay for the mini golf course at Riverside, trail work and a new parking lot for the Mining Railway, among other things. McCormick has been speaking to other resort municipality mayors about coming up with a different funding formula and the timing is right — the agreement is up for renewal in 2017. “It’s not falling on deaf ears,” McCormick told Council. “Stra-

tegic documents were sent out last week to all 14 mayors. We will meet with Minister Shirley Bond at the UBCM in September. We’ll talk not just about the issues but what it’s going to take to move this forward in 2017.” McCormick says that in the past five years there has been $160,000 of RMI funding invested in trails, and trails are becoming a bigger tourist draw each year. “One of the reasons people are coming to Kimberley is the trails. It’s not a coincidence seeing investment on that amenity. RMI funding is very important to us.”

Crews fight fire 5 k up St. Mary Lake Road C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

On Monday afternoon, Southeast Fire Centre crews and Kimberley Fire Department members responded to a fire five kilometres up the St. Mary Lake Road. Karly Shaugnessy of the Southeast Fire Centre said that there were two air tankers, a helicopter and two initial attack crews on the fire Monday.

“The fire is at 0.3 hectares and is currently under investigation,” Shaugnessy said. “It is believed to have spread from a structure fire. “The fire is burning near other structures but at this time they are not at risk.” The RDEK and Fire Centre were asking people to stay away from St. Mary Lake Road so as not to impede fire crews. “We are asking everyone to stay off St. Mary

Lake Road to allow the crews to fight the fire from the ground and air,” said Loree Duczek of the RDEK. “At this time, there are no evacuation alerts or orders in place.” Shaugnessy said that while the fire was not contained, crews were making progress and the hope was that it would not grow larger.
