Longest election campaign in Canadian history looming C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

Though no official announcement has been made, national media has all but confirmed that Prime Minister Steven Harper will drop the writ, indicating the official start to the federal election campaign, on Sunday. This will make it the

longest election campaign in Canadian history. Kootenay Columbia MP David Wilks says he has not been told anything officially. “I only know what the media is reporting, I have not been told by the Party,” Wilks said Thursday morning. “The media seems pretty sure. They expect the writ to be dropped, which will make for a long campaign.”

Events were interrupted when TOADM’s smoke machines caused the fire alarm to go off at the theatre. The crowd reluctantly evacuated, and thought about their rock and roll lives for about 20 minutes til the fire department gave the all clear. The show resumed with an even higher energy than before. Since the very visible Bavarian Esso building on Wallinger Ave. was torn down, a common question popping up is - what will happen with the lot? As has been reported in the Bulletin several times, options on the lot are limited because of its past as a gas station. Without hugely expensive remediation, the current zoning for the property will only allow a similar business or a public space/park. Council has not made a decision on what the final use of the property will be, but is

inviting public suggestions. One of the ideas being floated that has gained some steam over the spring and summer is moving the Cenotaph to this location. Many feel that since the closure of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Kimberley Branch that the Cenotaph has been somewhat abandoned and a new, highly visible location would be more appropriate. Council has talked about the idea, and agreed that it would require grant money to move the cenotaph, but haven’t ruled it out. The Cenotaph currently stands in the
