PRINCE RUPERT - Highway 16 has always been curvy, but it’s about to get vertical. On Monday, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced a joint funding initiative between the provincial and federal governments to the tune of $37 million to create a grade separation on Highway 16 and CNR Mile 28 between Terrace and Prince Rupert, Often cited as one of the more dangerous areas of the stretch of highway while coming to and from Prince Rupert due to adjusted speeds, curves and rail traffic, the governments of Canada and B.C. have recognized the increase in goods and commuters with increased industrial activity in the region and have decided to pool
their resources. level rail and road crossing needing to be resolved on B.C.’s Highway 16, comes from the New Building Canada Plan. “It’s been the location of, unfortunately, far too many accidents over the years and so we’re really proud of the fact that we were able to announce with our federal partners [this project] ... with a much safer overpass,” Minister Stone said. During construction, two kilometres of the highway will be realigned and the grade separation will carry Highway 16 traffic over the CN railway line. The aim is to reduce delays and improve the flow of goods to and from the port city on the rails. Stone and MP Bob Zimmer also announced $8.4 million in funding for the expansion of the Northwest Regional Airport. For more on that story, see Page 3.
