It was over before it began -- literally.

The planned End of an Era sale at Oak Bay High was cancelled after school district staff determined on Wednesday that the event could not safely go ahead.

“We apologize for not getting that information out sooner,” said Tom Smith,

director of facilities for the Greater Victoria School District.

“We have to follow certain protocols, first and foremost making sure it was done in a safe way,” Smith said, adding that school staff were trying to do the best job they could to try and successfully sell off relics from the old high school, which is being replaced by a new building this fall.

Smith was part of a walkthrough of the old Oak Bay High School on Wednesday -- just as the July 29 edition of the Oak Bay News hit every door in Oak Bay with front-

page news of the sale.

As the old gym was being inspected, concerns were raised about the wobbly stacks of desks, dim lighting and potentially dangerous items poking into the tight corridors between piled up items.

District staff made the difficult decision to cancel the sale originally planned for Aug. 1.

“There was no safe way to pull it off,” Smith said, pointing to concerns about someone getting hurt and exposing the board to a liability it wasn’t prepared to face.

Smith acknowledges that the timing could have been better and apologized to any alumni who hoped to attend the sale to secure a piece of their history.

Most anything of value will be repurposed for another school, Smith said, claiming there likely won’t be much left to sell off after all.

“We’re in the process of moving furniture from Oak Bay to our warehouse,” he said, adding crews are salvaging much more than they thought they would when the End of an Era sale was first proposed.

Oak Bay will again participate in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure taking place Oct. 4 at the University of Victoria. The event, facilitated by a committee of local volunteers, hosted 3,100 participants and raised more than $432,000 for breast cancer research, treatment and prevention last year.

During its July council meeting, Oak Bay approved providing, among other things, up to 100 ‘no parking’ signs for its segment of Gordon Head Road and Cedar Hill Cross Road.

Road closures for the event held at the University of Victoria include Cedar Hill X Road at University Drive, Gordon Head Road and Richmond Road.

Each year, thousands of Canadians of all ages unite in a bid to create a future without breast cancer. In 2014, 65 communities and 127,000 Canadians participated and raised $25 million.

A family of osprey living high above the University of Victoria playing fields are the newest local reality television stars.

In her years working at UVic, Sarah Blackstone has spent many years with the large nest securely built on a light post. She’s consistently photographed it, honing her skills while devouring information on the bird of prey, a family of osprey, that live there.

“I’ve always been a bird watcher and it’s hard to ignore a two ton nest,” she said.

When she first arrived at UVic the rabbits captured the attention of hawks and other meat eaters, with that food source gone, only the fish-eating osprey remain.

“I’ve seen them bring in people’s gold fish from the ponds,” said Blackstone, advisor to UVic’s provost, an avid raptor photographer and the driving force behind the webcam.

Osprey, also known as fish hawks, are recognizable by their whitish bellies, brown upper parts and a distinctive brown mask across the eyes. They nest near bodies of water, usually on tall vertical structures such as dead tree snags, utility poles or – as at UVic – on top of a tower housing floodlights for the athletic playing fields below.

“I’ve always been interested in the big raptors and hawks and owls,” she said. Blackstone saw it as an opportunity to learn about the animal, and has journaled the coming and going of the osprey pair, and happenings at the nest, for about seven years.

The two adults show up around April 15 and mess around with the nest, get reacquainted and then settle in for a period of incubation.

“Then there’s a long period where it’s not very interesting because she sits, and sits and sits,” Blackstone said. “Then in early June the chicks hatch.”

The little family ways are a water cooler subject around campus, one Blackstone regularly discussed withe president Jamie Cassels. They’ve often discussed the concept of the online webcam to share the osprey with the community at large.

“Together we’ve been chatting in the hallways and stuff for years, so this year we decided to make it

As of last week, bird voyeurs can sit at their computers and watch at their leisure the comings and goings of UVic’s resident osprey family. The webcam is installed on one of the tall light posts that illuminates seating in UVic’s stadium. It gives a bird’s-eye view of everything from nest renovation and food deliveries, to interactions between chicks and defence of the nest from other birds of prey.

“It’s a little bit late this season, but now we have a permanent

camera and we’ll follow the pair every year,” Blackstone said.

“There’s a lot of information there.

I want to share what I know and what’s known. Ospreys are really well studied so there’s a lot of information available about them.”

This year, there are two chicks in the nest — a third didn’t survive — and they’re due to fledge any day now. They’ll hang around the nest for a while as they learn how to fly and hunt.

“Most bird cams are placed very close to the nest but we’ve

chosen to provide a wide view of all the activities in and around the nesting site,” said Blackstone. “This gives a better idea of the overall environment and all the factors that impact the success and failure of this nest.”

Amblers celebrate blue moon with second walk Once in a blue moon residents walk the shores of Oak Bay. Well they walk the shorelines and hidden trails often on a full moon when it’s Embrace the Night evening stroll through the community. This month that happens, to happen, twice.

Embrace the Night walks started on Valentine’s just over a year ago. It quickly grew from a dozen participants to 70-plus during last summer’s super moons. The aim is to walk in the twilight with great company of all ages and enjoy the health benefits. This being a blue moon month – a full moon twice in one month – so they’ve opted for a blue moon stroll, a second walk in July.

The route starts at Willows park and takes a very shallow staircase up from the Esplanade to the blue flowering Camas trail, another secret path that follows up a mild incline to Nottingham Road where the walk loops back to Tod House on Heron Street.

Walkers will wind their way back to the Tea Room where staff will greet with beverages by donation and a selection of baked goods. This is an ageand family-friendly event with an alternative guided route available for those who can’t do stairs.

Stay sensible around water Nothing beats the heat quite like taking a dip, whether it’s inching into the water up to your knees, taking a couple of cooling strokes or enjoying a full-blown invigorating swim.

And with no end in sight to our unseasonably hot summer, more and more people are taking the plunge this year.

Bound on three sides by water, Oak Bay’s stretches of shoreline entice locals and visitors alike for both swimming and boating.

At the risk of putting a damper on anyone’s idea of innocent fun, it’s important to remember that safety should always come first before you venture into or onto the water.

Two devastating accidents on Vancouver Island this summer, one at Sproat Lake which claimed the life of a Greater Victoria man and the other which saw a young rugby player visiting from England drown in Shawnigan Lake, underscore the need to remind people of the potential for deadly consequences when playing in or on the water.

Last week lifeguards at Recreation Oak Bay set out to reduce the number of water related fatalities by increasing education and awareness towards water safety and drowning prevention. They put on a Drowning Prevention Week Friday Fun Swim offering patrons a chance to participate in the Lifesaving Society’s Swim to Survive Challenge and watch demos from the Junior Lifeguard Camp. So please, be mindful that you can’t take too many precautions on or near the water, whatever the circumstances.

And remember, alcohol and water conspire to form a deadly cocktail that can make the raft appear closer, or that dive from a cliff less daunting.

We encourage you to responsibly enjoy all the pleasures the water has to offer this summer.

Take a few minutes while you’re checking your cell phone or waiting for the sunscreen to dry to surf over to redcross.ca for lifesaving advice in, on and around the water.

Cyclists deserve respect, not vilification Re: Hordes of riders give cyclists a bad name (Letters July 24) Cyclists can be inconvenient, but they are part of the community you live in Lawrence. When there’s a car behind us, we shout ‘car back’ and the group makes an effort to leave space. If we feel our group is too large, we break into smaller groups. We ride early in the morning because we’ve got families and jobs and because we disrupt the fewest cars at that time. We take routes that reduce our impact on traffic, like Beach Drive in the Uplands.

And, we are always re-evaluating our routes and our behavior (e.g., group size). We don’t enjoy slowing you down. We often ride two abreast.

We’re social, not to mention half as long as we’d be riding single-file. We take turns riding at the front of the

group. After five minutes, the two at the front go to the back. That’s what was happening when you came across a pack four-wide. In 30 seconds they’d have been two-wide again. We also tend to keep our dissatisfaction with drivers to ourselves, but when someone passes closely at full throttle (sound familiar?), it can lead to louder complaints. Sorry about that. Keep in mind that you can kill us with rude behavior and all we do is slow you down for a minute or two. Regarding the crosswalk: Often, the person at the curb waves the group through (you don’t always see that from your car). They recognize that a short delay for them allows 20 people to get by. Have you ever waved a bus though a crosswalk?  Other people do it all the time. When you write that it is not

safe for cars, what you mean is that it inconvenient for cars. We get that and will continue to try to reduce our impact. At the same time, we’d welcome more patience from drivers. Our hobby doesn’t require the municipality to water and cut and mark a field, or build, heat and staff a pool.  We need infrastructure that is maintained whether we’re there or not. Our hobby costs you only a little consideration. And we aren’t a horde. We’re your doctors, lawyers, your grandchildren’s teachers, your real estate agents, we’re moms and dads and your next-door neighbours and we’re out there working hard to stay fit. We deserve your respect, not vilification.  John Taylor Oak Bay

Deer a shared responsibility Re: Council frustrated with lack of provincial aid on deer issue, (OBN July 24).

The Urban Wildlife Stewardship Society was very happy to receive $5,000 in financial support from Oak Bay council and is now looking forward to an opportunity to explore how best to work together on deer management.

The UWSS has several objectives.

One main goal is to demonstrate a non-lethal alternative to lethal culls – immuno-contraception is listed as an option in the provincial document that guided the Regional Deer Management Strategy and as Alice Finall, Mayor of North Saanich and the chair of the CRD’s Planning, Transportation and Protection Services Committee, said last week, “deserves a much better chance.” Director Vic Derman agreed with the scientific evidence-based approach of the UWSS, saying “if we are going to intelligently attempt to manage deer, we absolutely have to start out with being able to survey, identify and enumerate the population and then track what happens to that population over time.” Tagging and tracking the deer in Oak Bay, along with vaccinating the does with the contraceptive SpayVac, is an important element of our program.

Another goal is safety. For instance, no one wants to hit a deer and see it suffer, or leave a fawn or two as orphans to starve – however we also don’t want to see vehicles travelling at an unsafe speed collide with a deer and cause bodily harm to the occupants or swerve at a high speed to miss a deer, and cause a more serious accident. To that end, we have successfully initiated a sign and advertising campaign to remind people to slow down in areas where deer are known to be, and we are planning community information/education workshops in conjunction with the BCSPCA for the fall.

Deer eating gardens continues to be an issue for some. We believe we can help through ongoing public education.

As a farmer, CRD director John Ranns endorsed the UWSS saying “I think, from my experience in living with deer on a day-to-day basis, that [immuno-contraception] has the best chance of success of anything I’ve seen other than fencing.”

Quite rightly, there is pressure on the province to improve supports for urban deer management. Along with providing supports for contraception plans as an alternative to divisive lethal culls, the province needs to implement much more stringent guidelines for mitigation of human-deer conflict and for ensuring public education specific to individual communities is effective, sustained and given time to make a difference.

As the CRD recognized, deer are clearly a shared responsibility and there are certain steps that municipalities will continue to be responsible for such as community engagement, human-deer conflict reduction and public education. While the pilot project that Oak Bay undertook was time consuming and costly, it’s important that deer management not now be brushed off as solely a provincial responsibility.

Along with gathering significant information from the immuno-contraception program, there are important and effective conflict-reduction steps that together, Oak Bay and the UWSS can implement.

Other events to mark the weekend included a meet and greet at the Victoria Golf Club on Friday evening and dinner at the University

Club on Saturday evening.

More than 100 former Oak Bay High students and 50 guests came from as far away as East Dover, Nova Scotia, Battleford, Saskatchewan, Edmonton, Calgary and Banff, Arizona and Hawaii.

Retired teachers Gary Taylor, Ed Kowalyk, Phyllis McOrmond and Zoe Dhur were special guests at the Friday gathering.

Response to the reunion was most positive with participants sharing laughs with old friends and commenting on how lucky they’ve been to have had such good people as friends, during some of life’s most important years.

Oak Bay author pens museum’s inaugural children’s book Kendra Wong Black Press

The Royal B.C. Museum released its first children’s book to help teach children about invasive animals and plants in B.C. on July 23.

Aliens Among Us, written by Victoria author Alex Van Tol and illustrated by Mike Deas, identifies more than 50 species of alien animals and plants that have established themselves in the province. “Sometimes people think that an alien species is an invasive species, but that’s not always the case,� Van Tol said. “An invasive species is one that has a steady march forward and it kind of chews through everything in its path.

An aliens species is one that isn’t from British Columbia but isn’t disrupting the ecosystem in the same kind of way.�

The book, which originated from an exhibit a few years ago at the museum, describes how the species got there and how they’ve upset the natural balance of the ecosystem.

It includes mammals, such as the eastern grey squirrel and the North American opossum; amphibians and reptiles such as the American bullfrog and the goldfish; and plants such as English holly and Himalayan blackberries.

Oak Bay teen sets the stage for Harvard Christine van Reeuwyk Oak Bay News

Elizabeth Duncan will hone a keen interest in Humanties at Harvard this fall after cultivating a broad, and rewarding, knowledge base in her final two years of high school.

The Oak Bay teen is a familiar face to the local theatre set, starting with a couple of ballet productions, the Nutcracker and Alice in Wonderland, as a youngster.

“That started an interest in being on stage,” the 17-year-old said. Then she tagged along with a friend to audition for Beauty and the Beast with the Victoria Operatic Society at age eight.

“I ended up with the part,” Duncan said. “When I was 12, I started doing professional theatre.”

Her stage career is marked by a pair of new musicals at the Belfry – Let Me Call You Sweetheart in 2013 and The Life Inside in 2010 – and the Blue Bridge 2013 production Brighton Beach Memoirs.

ever, she’s been absent from the stage. She took a break, going from five productions in her Grade 10 year to enrolling in the International Baccalaureate program at Glenlyon Norfolk School in Grade 11 “It’s very intense, so unfortunately that meant cutting back on theatre,” she said.

The IB program consists of three university level curriculum courses and three standard courses: theory of knowledge; Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) hours and an independent research project that entails a 4,000-word essay.

She started the course with the goal of attending an elite U.S. university. She’d applied to a few that “had a really good combination of smaller size and top faculty and academics,” she said.

“I knew I had to take one of the more rigorous programs my school offered,” she said. “I’m happy I did it. You feel you’ve really accomplished something.”

That feeling set in as she wrapped 15 exams over two weeks in May, some nearly three hours long.

“In a day you could be writing five yours of exams with an hour break,” she said. “It felt so good the last day.”

She leaves mid-August for Harvard, a school that had already accepted her when she logged on to find out her IB scores this summer. The scoring in each section is marked one to seven with three possible extra points, making a top score of 45.

“It’s really nerve-wracking,” she said of the moments logging in and scrolling through her grades.

“At first I really thought it was a mistake,” she said.

There were no errors. The Oak Bay teen is among five students across Canada to achieve a perfect score of 45 on the IB exams this year. The recent Glenlyon Norfolk School grad is among the 45 students worldwide

to score 100 per cent from more than 140,000 students worldwide who wrote the exams.

Despite the studying and tedious exam schedule she’s happy she pursued the IB program.

“It’s good way to make sure you have a good breadth of studies going on,” she said.

She plans to maintain that variety of studies during her first year of university.

When she visited Harvard campus the week after learning of her acceptance, Duncan found it “vibrant and friendly,” she said. “There was a lot of life there and a lot of good things going on.” cvanreeuwyk@oakbaynews.com

That’s on top of getting hundreds of kilometres out of one fill up.

Having tested the Jetta TDI Highline trim (which starts at $29,690) you get such features 17-inch alloy wheels, a six-way power driver’s seat with manual lumbar support, fog lights, leather seating surfaces, a power sunroof, and LED signature daytime running lights.

While it might not be everyone’s first choice in colour, the Jetta diesel’s Toffee Brown Metallic looks like a cold glass of root beer on wheels. Yum. I found it to be refreshing and different. As for the ride and handling, this Jetta does not disappoint. One of my favourite features – aside from the 150 horsepower and 236 horsepower from its 2.0L, turbo engine – is how it handles. The steering weight gives enough feedback to the driver to make tight turns engaging. And when paired with the DSG transmission, not only is city traffic more manageable, but less work for your left leg!

If you find yourself towing a lot, or even wanting to go off the straight and narrow, consider the 2015 VW Touareg TDI. With ample room for five inside, this SUV comes with all the right touches.

The refreshed interior design and styling is highly appealing to those who want a posh truck, without paying the equivalent price of its familiar equivalents: the Porsche Cayenne Diesel or the Audi Q7 TDI. The Touareg’s starting MSRP comes in at $55,275 and goes from there. The Execline is the top-of-the-line trim and starts at $69,575. Okay, that’s a decent amount of coin, and it’s not for everyone, but all trims of Touareg come with the same great 3.0L, turbocharged, V6 engine offering 240 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque.

This engine is then linked with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The panoramic sunroof lets in a copious amount of daylight onto the Terracotta Brown Vienna Leather seats and into the cabin.

A strong point of VWs as long as I can remember is how its cabin says so much with saying so little. For example: the centre stack. The perfect combination of buttons and touchscreen make the infotainment so easy to use and one that is not hard to navigate.

Then there’s the fuel economy.

In the city, it uses an estimated 12.0L/100km in the city and 8.1L/100km on the highway. Not bad for a vehicle that weighs in at 2,130 kg and has all-wheel drive.

There are a couple more TDI options for you, too. There’s the larger Passat sedan and then there’s the funky Beetle.

Tournament of Hope keeps Dunahee case alive Kendra Wong Victoria News

One of Crystal Dunahee’s favourite memories of her son Michael is from when the family brought his sister Caitlin home for the first time.

“He was her big brother, he always wanted to be helping out and doing what he could for his little sister,” said Dunahee. “He always wanted to hold her.”

On Sunday, March 24, 1991, fouryear-old Michael went missing from Blanshard Elementary School and was never found.

“It was a hard day. It’s just one of those things where you allow him to do something for the first time and then it backfires – because that’s what had happened,” Dunahee said.

“You allow him to go to the park for the first time while we were 100 yards away putting the other stuff down.

Bruce went to go be with him and as far as we know, he didn’t make it to the park.”

Since his disappearance 24 years ago, more than 11,000 tips have been received by police and the case has spawned one of the largest police investigations in Canadian history.

The family and community work to

keep Michael’s case in the public eye with annual drives and the Michael Dunahee Slo-pitch Tournament of Hope in August.

The 24th annual softball tournament – hosted by the Victoria Labour Council to help fundraise for Child Find B.C. and the Michael Dunahee Search Centre – is expected to draw hundreds of people.

“I think people will take away what they’ve always taken away which is hope, hope for our children, hope for a better future,” said Steve Orcherton, executive director with Child Find B.C. Last year they raised just over $12,000. All the money goes to Child Find B.C. to help fund its services, such as ID kits, literature and education programs, currently offered for free to families.

“As a family, it’s very heartwarming to know that the community is still supportive and there for us all the time,” Dunahee said. “We just do whatever we can to keep hope alive because we just don’t know. We just have to keep going and keep it out there so people don’t forget.”

UVic alum go golden at Pan Ams The University of Victoria Vikes had a lot to celebrate following the July 26 closing ceremonies of the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Ont. Twenty-one former or current Vikes competed in the games across five different sports most getting on the podium in a year where Canada broke its Pan Am record-winning 78 gold medals with a total of 217 medals. To start off the games a long list of Vikes helped Canada defend the title for the men’s rugby sevens. Late heroics from Harry Jones lifted the Canadians up 22-19 over Argentina to claim gold and secure a spot in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Vikes Nathan Hirayama, Sean Duke, Phil Mack, John Moonlight, Justin Douglas, Mike Fuailefau and Lucas Hammond were all a part of the team. On the water Vikes rowers helped Canada win five medals, all of which were gold.

Former Vike Kai Langerfeld won gold in both the coxless four and the eights. Coxswain and current Vike Jacob Koudys was also a part of the golden eights crew. Nicholas Pratt helped Canada win gold in the lightweight four in 6:42.40. Former Vike Saul Garcia helped Canada to a fifthplace finish in the lightweight double with crew mate Mark Henry. In women’s rowing, Antje Von Seydlitz topped the podium twice, first in the women’s double in 7:13.01 and again in the quad in 7:07.63. In swimming

Para Pan Am Games start next week The Para Pan Am Games are set for Aug. 7 to 15. Former Vikes women’s basketball player and two-time CIS national champion Janet McLachlan will lead the Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team. Canada is in a pool with Mexico, Guatemala and Brazil. The women’s team’s first match up is Aug. 8 against Guatemala at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time. On the pitch, former Vikes Kaitlyn Williams, Thea Culley and Danielle Hennig guided a young Canadian women’s field hockey team to its first Pan Am medal since 1999. Following a disappointing

fourth-place finish in 2011, the Canadians came back to rival their opponents Chile, winning 1-0 in the bronze-medal match.

Hennig and Culley were vice captains on the team, while Williams back-stopped the team in goal in all six matches. In men’s field hockey former Vikes Brenden Bissett and Matthew Sarmento helped earned Canada a spot back on the Olympic stage.

Following a thrilling shoot-out win in the semifinals against Brazil, Canada booked their ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympics while also qualifying for the Pan American Games gold-medal game for the 11th consecutive year. Despite falling 3-0 to a powerful Argentina team in the final, Bissett, Sarmento and team Canada left Toronto with a silver medal and the gratification of earning an Olympic berth. From modern West Coast design to traditional Craftsman renovations, Oak Bay’s newest homes and renovations figure prominently in this year’s Construction Achievements and Renovations of Excellence (CARE) Awards.

Presented by the Victoria Residential Builders Association, the annual awards showcase local leaders in sustainable West Coast design and construction, with projects including new homes, renovations, kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor living spaces.

“The CARE Awards finalists demonstrate the wide range of possibilities through innovative and sustainable building practices,” says Bill Patterson, chair of the 2015 CARE Awards.

“Our West Coast lifestyle and seamless transition between indoors and outdoors are captured in these outstanding homes.”

Among the finalists are a variety of new Oak Bay custom homes, including GT Mann Contracting’s “Binab Residence,” competing with Terry Johal Developments’ “The Gallery” and Seba Construction’s “Heron Landing” for Best Single Family Detached Custom Home over 3,000 sq. ft.

Gorter Construction’s “Swiss Pearl” is a finalist in the Under 3,000 sq. ft category, Only two finalists made the cut in the Best Single Family Detached Home over $1,000,000 category, including Oak Bay’s “Pebble Cove,” from Christopher Developments and Zebra Design.

For Best Spec Homes, Urban Core Ventures’ “Margate” (Under 2,500 sq. ft.) and Aryze Developments’ “Swan House” (Over 2,500 sq. ft.) will vie for gold.

Many of these projects are also finalists in a variety of other categories, such as Best Kitchem and Best Master Suite.

Recognizing the character in many of Oak Bay’s older homes, renovation projects of note include Mike Graham Construction’s “Ocean Air,” Three Sixty Degree Construction’s “Lanai Project” and Urban Core Ventures’ “Moderne,” also up for project of the year honours along with Oak Bay’s “Pebble Cove” from Christopher Developments and Zebra Design.

Planning and Design, Customer Service, Sales and Marketing, Special Achievement, and Special Interest, CARE Awards finalists are selected by a panel of industry professionals using criteria such as architectural design, quality workmanship, creative use of space, and energy efficiency.

Heated competition expected at Royals camp Laura Lavin News staff

Victoria Royals GM Cam Hope is already looking forward to a great season with the team.

The Royals will open their fifth WHL season at home against the Portland Winterhawks on Friday, Sept. 25 at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

For now though, Hope is concentrating on the import draft.

“Last year we had two Russians, Alexey Sleptsov and Marsel Ibragimov. The older, Sleptsov will stay in Russia to play professional,” said Hope.

“We’ll go back to the draft for one player this year. We’re eyeing a couple of guys. There are a few 16, 17 year-old Swedes and Russians – it’s like the wild west – we’ll see how it goes.”

The 2015 Royals will not have the benefit of stalwarts Greg Chase, who has been assigned to the American Hockey League’s Oklahoma City Barons by the Edmonton Oilers; Austin Carroll, who was signed by the Calgary Flames; and 20-year-old Brandon Magee.

“We’ll miss the experienced guys who keep the team ticking but that’s the way it is in juniors, guys move up and make room for new leaders to emerge,” said Hope.

The Royals embark on their longest road trip of the year early in the season when they swing through Saskatchewan and Manitoba for six games in nine days. The Eastern Division swing starts Oct. 30 against the Prince Albert Raiders. Victoria will also visit the Saskatoon Blades, Swift

“We start at home then have a longer road trip, it’s the best of both worlds,” said Hope.

“It’s the first time in franchise history we’re at home for the first six games in a row. They can settle into the billets, settle into

the city, get the first half-dozen junior games under their belts, then later in October we’ll have the longest road trip. It’s a good opportunity for them to bond free of distractions. They get their feet under them before they’re battle tested on the road.”

The entire coaching staff will return, however Dave Lowry, who was named bench boss for the national team earlier this year, will leave mid-season to prep that team for the 2016 World Junior Hockey Championships.

“In my view, he’s the best coach in junior hockey,” said Hope. “Again, he’ll be coaching the world juniors and that means he has to leave in the middle of the season, as he did last year as assistant coach, so we have to be able to adapt to that. We’re lucky really, to have all of our coaching staff back.”

The Royals’ staff have their work cut out for them as Hope predicts a hot contest at this year’s training camp.

“There’s a whole group of young guys who want to make the line up this year. It will be an extremely interesting training camp – probably the most competitive one since we started.”

Wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries with licensed lounges can now sell patrons liquor they didn’t produce.

Until now, a distillery couldn’t sell anything other than the spirits it produces – a glass of B.C. wine was off limits – and a winery couldn’t oblige if one guest at a table wanted a beer instead of the local grape.

Those lines are erased under the latest change stemming from B.C.’s liquor policy review.

But there will be a limit – a maximum of 20 per cent of sales by a given producer can consist of liquor produced offsite. That’s intended to keep the focus on unique local offerings.

“We are doing away with B.C.’s archaic liquor rules,” Attorney General Suzanne Anton said, adding the change will give more choice to consumers while supporting B.C. tourism and small businesses.

Craft Distillers Guild of B.C. president Tyler Dyck said the move opens the door for craft brewers, vintners and distillers to cross-promote each other.

The new rules also apply to special events, so a wedding or other event at a winery or other liquor producer will no longer have to get a special occasion licence to serve alcohol.
