Sprinkling restrictions to continue

Passionate performance

Weekend rain provides little help Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

Despite some heavy rainfall over the weekend, Mission and Abbotsford residents are still being asked to conserve water. Stage three restrictions remain in place, meaning homeowners may not use a sprinkler to water their lawns. However, watering by hand is still permitted. “It seemed like it was torrential downpour all weekend, but we only got about five centimetres of rain over the three days up at the lake,” said Tracy Kyle, Mission’s director of engineering and public works. While she said any rain is helpful, Dickson Lake is far from full. While stage three restriction remain, Kyle said it is looking more and more likely that a stage four ban – which would not permit lawn watering of any kind – will not be needed. “We’re finding that residents are doing a great job by working with us and not watering their lawns,” said Kyle. Because of those conservation efforts, water levels are still in the upper parameters for stage three. “We are not anticipating, at this time, getting to stage four.” Dickson Lake, which is the main water source for both Abbotsford and Mission, feeds naturally into Norrish

Creek and then into the Norrish Creek water treatment plant. As of July 28, the water in Dickson Lake was at the 633.3 metre mark. If the lake reaches the 632 metre level, the water will need to be pumped. Kyle said she expects pumping to be needed by mid-August. She said pumping water from Dickson Lake to Norrish is not a “normal practice.” Most of the time the water flows freely by gravity.

For more on water see Page 3 The only two occasions pumping has ever been required was in 2006 and 2009. The all-time low level for Dickson was 629.7 metres, which occurred in October of 2006. Dickson Lake/Norrish Creek supplies about 55 per cent of the water used in Mission and Abbotsford. Mission’s Cannell Lake feeds the north area of Mission and provides 10 per cent of water used in the summer. Nineteen groundwater wells in Abbotsford provide the final 35 per cent of water used. The current stage three conservation measures also dictate that no new lawn permits will be issued and non-recirculating fountains will be prohibited. Residents are still be able to hand-water flower and vegetable gardens and wash vehicles.

last year, or are undergoing repair, may be watered. Abbotsford parks at Rotary Stadium and Abbotsford Exhibition Park are being watered with well water, which isn’t on the city water system. The Clearbrook Waterworks District is a separate system that provides water to a large area in central Abbotsford. There are no restrictions on those on Clearbrook water or those who have private wells. The District of Mission has also taken on other water conservation measures, according to Kyle. They have been using rain barrel water for pressure washing, stopped flushing hydrants and are not washing district vehicles. The district has altered its work schedule so as not to do tasks like pressure washing downtown sidewalks until after the restrictions are lifted. District staff are looking for a pump for the water park cistern, in order to use water from the spray park to irrigate around the area, pressure wash and for watering plants. If there is an issue with residents not following the restrictions, contact Mission call 604-820-3761 or email pworksadmin@mission.ca.

Brown lawns have become the norm for Mission residents following the implementation of a sprinkling ban on July 3 – but many district-owned community fields remain green. All Mission and Abbotsford residences and businesses receiving water from the joint municipal system must comply with the stage three water restrictions, but some community members have complained online that the district continues to water certain fields. Tracy Kyle, Mission’s director of engineering and public works, said sports fields are an asset used year-round by the public. Community fields are expensive and must be watered to be maintained, as they are expensive to repair and re-seed. It would also impact community groups who need the sports fields if they are unusable in the fall, said Kyle. “In order to keep those (fields) in good condition, they need some water.” Parks staff in Abbotsford and Mission are not watering passive areas in city parks. However, sand-based fields can be watered on alternate days, and soil-based twice a week between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m., according to the water

restrictions. There are also exceptions that allow other fields to be watered. In Mission, Albert McMahon elementary, Hatzic Park, Heritage Park secondary, Windebank elementary, Hatzic Senior secondary, Mission Senior and the Mission Sports Park and Leisure Centre may water their

Bears are looking for food Loss for the community

As autumn approaches, bears and other wildlife are preparing for the cold months ahead. Bruins need approximately 20,000 calories a day in order to pack on enough weight for their denning period. This means they may be seen in neighbourhoods looking for an easy meal. WildSafeBC will be out late at night patrolling neighbourhoods for early garbage set-outs, one of the

top attractants for hungry bears. Garbage placed on the curb the night before garbage day will receive a yellow sticker reminding residents that it is an attractant. The Mission bylaw states that waste may be placed out for pick up before 8 a.m. on the morning of collection. Residents are encouraged to store waste in a garage, shed or bear resistant enclosure.

Calloway was a dedicated volunteer and protector of animals Mission lost a community volunteer and animal lover as Maggie Calloway passed away on July 6. A former winner of the Mission Woman of the Year Award, Calloway moved to Mission in 1986 and lived on two acres with her beloved animal clan. Her great passion was caring and fundraising for animals in distress. It was her all-consuming commitment. Among the many charities that she worked for were SAINTS, Elizabeth’s Wildlife Center, Burnaby Wildlife Center and numerous others. Calloway was also a board member and later chair of the Citizens Advisory Committee at Ferndale Minimum Security Institution. She also acted as an escort for Ferndale inmates on personal outside passes. Later, she established a highly successful animal shelter program in Ferndale run by the inmates themselves.

Maggie Calloway: 1942-2015 A founding member of the Fraser Valley Humane Society, Calloway volunteered as the society’s president, and helped raise $60,000 for an ongoing spay and neuter program through liaison with local government. “For many years Maggie had been the driving force behind many successful campaigns and programs,” said Celia Durst, executive director of the Fraser

Valley Humane Society. “She also worked tirelessly with council to have a cat spay/ neuter and identification policy brought in which is now a local bylaw. For the last few years she has worked more in the background but was always a very generous and loyal supporter who was always just at the end of a phone if I needed anything. She will be dearly missed,” added Durst. Calloway had been a reporter, producer, talk show host and columnist. She wrote regular newspaper columns for Black Press called Simplicity and RenoNation. A celebration of life will be held on August 16, between 1 and 4 p.m. at the Mission Seniors Activity Center, 33100 10th Avenue (at Talbut), Mission. Summer crimes

It’s so easy to become inattentive in summer. Whether we’re just befuddled trying to beat the heat – or eager to get out and be part of the many fun activities that warm weather offers, distraction is at an all-time high this time of year. Unfortunately, as recent crime statistics show, there are those who are more than ready to take full advantage of any lapse of attention. The natural impetus is to leave home windows open to catch any breeze, and as we stroll in and out, we are likely to be less attentive to locking doors, or even closing them – an open invitation to a thief who won’t hesitate in taking an inventory of our personal belongings, and making off with the most portable of them. While loading vehicles, we’ll often leave costly cameras and sports equipment sitting outside – a crime of opportunity just waiting to happen. But it’s not just theft of valuables

QUESTION OF THE WEEK Are you concerned about Mission’s crime rate?

we have to worry about. Offenders are also after mail and anything else they can leverage for subsequent, often very costly, identity theft. And once we get in those vehicles – and get out again at our destination – are we really sure that we locked all of the doors and closed all of the windows? Did we lock valuables out of sight in the trunk – or did we leave them in plain view? It’s not just carelessly displayed items or the vehicles themselves that criminals are after – a garage dooropener and an address from insurance documents could be the key to a much higher payoff for a criminal, but one that poses a greater potential risk to ourselves and our families. In reality, in this day and age, any one of us could be responsible for a lapse that could mar our summer – and end up having to pay a hefty price in property loss and insurance hassles. – Black Press

Free trade in milk, eggs, even logs? Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views One of the rituals of life in southern B.C. communities is cross-border shopping for certain items. Even corner store owners are known to pop down to Washington border towns to load up a van with U.S. milk, taking advantage of a price difference generated by our “supply management” system. The recent slide in the Canadian dollar reduces this pressure in the short term, but the fact remains that dairy producers are propped up in Canada. And that’s increasingly a problem as Canada pursues entry into the Trans Pacific Partnership, the next big trade deal. With the U.S., Japan, Australia, New Zealand and other countries involved, it would form the largest trading bloc in the world. Canada uses tariffs of up to 300 per cent to protect its dairy and poultry industries from foreign imports, and the higher domestic price on milk and eggs is a burden that falls most heavily on poor people.

The industry group Dairy Farmers of Canada and others argue that reducing or removing Canada’s import protection won’t change the huge farm subsidies paid by European and U.S. governments. The recent trade agreement between Canada and the European Union has already chipped away at this protection. The Conservative government is tiptoeing on this issue as a fall election approaches, with rural seats across the country at stake. But the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand have deregulated their dairy industries and the Canadian industry is already facing increased cheese imports due to the European Union agreement. It’s an issue to watch as the federal election heats up. The NDP has positioned itself as a defender of supply management, a particularly touchy issue in rural Quebec, while the federal Liberals are committed to keeping up with the U.S. and joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The trend toward freer trade is broad and long. The Harper government ended the monopoly of the Canadian Wheat Board in 2012, and grain growers continue to compete globally. A trade deal with Korea saw tariffs come off Korean import vehicles, and life goes on.

Another controlled and protected commodity that is seldom discussed is logs. That’s changed with the push for the Trans Pacific Partnership, as Japan protests federal and provincial restrictions that push up the cost of logs for export.

Canada uses tariffs of up to 300 per cent to protect its dairy and poultry industries from foreign imports. Ottawa regulates the export of private land logs, but only in B.C. This is a long-standing irritant for private land owners, holding the domestic price for premium “J grade” Douglas fir logs below $80 per cubic metre while the price in Asia and Washington state has climbed above $100.

The U.S. has long complained about B.C.’s cheap Crown land stumpage and low domestic log prices in general, viewing them as a subsidy to lumber production. Indeed, this whole protection apparatus is designed to stimulate domestic milling, although it doesn’t seem to be working. The main investment by B.C. forest companies recently has been buying southern U.S. sawmills. The coastal industry has maintained that profits from log exports are keeping logging alive, paying for the harvest and processing of logs in B.C. With Pacific trade talks in the background, pushed hard by U.S. President Barack Obama, the latest Canada-U.S. lumber agreement is due to expire in October. It will be more difficult to defend what University of Alberta economist Jack Mintz calls a “Soviet-style approach to price determination.” B.C. used to do something similar to this with wine, protecting a backward industry cranking out mostly god-awful plonk. Competition made the wine industry better, and now it’s world class. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press newspapers. Tfletcher@blackpress.ca

YOUR VIEWS Thanks Why were discussions in-camera? Thoughtful soul

Randy In light of Randy Kamp, MP for Pitt Meadows – Maple Ridge – Mission, not seeking another term in Parliament, I thought it would be appropriate to thank him for representing us in Ottawa for the past 11 years. Over this time, he has become one of the longest-serving parliamentary secretaries in Canadian history and an advocate for many important issues, both at the local level and federally. Moving from Mission to Ottawa to attend university, I had the privilege of interning and working with Mr. Kamp in his parliamentary office. Aside from being one the kindest and funniest people I’ve worked with, Mr. Kamp is known for his commonsensical approach to politics, his humility, and his passion for serving his constituents. I appreciated that he wanted me get the most out of my work and internship experience. I credit his efforts to bring me to meetings and task me with interesting, substantive work for my professional and academic development and high regard for Parliament. Mr. Kamp, it has been an honour to work with and learn from you. You’ve left big shoes for your successor to fill. I extend my greatest and most sincere thanks for all you’ve done.

RE: Letter by Danny Plecas (July 17 edition)

Danny, you’ve confirmed what we at the MHA have maintained all along. While the mayor has stated numerous times that the district is developing “a new governance model” for the park, this is simply a takeover, or as you state, “...the district will incorporate operations within the parks department.” An advisory committee is not a governance model ... it does not govern, it simply advises. So this is political double-speak. If there is “nothing to hide,”

then why have all proceedings and discussions been held in-camera? Indeed, we are well aware of the district’s plans and completely clear with your intentions. Our grievance comes from the fact that all these plans were made without any discussion or consultation with the MHA at all. The vast majority of questions of which we have subsequently become aware have very solid rationales and answers. Had these been the subject of discussions prior to a fait accompli decision being announced, we could’ve been

moving forward together in a different direction. Instead, within a month of taking office, this council gave us notice that our long-standing management of the park was not being renewed. No discussion, no warning, no consultation, no questions... simply a decision made behind closed doors, all of a rush. This is not a heartening way to commence a four-year tenure. Shooting first and asking questions afterwards has never been a hallmark of democracy.

found lost keys I lost control of my mountain bike coming down Stave Lake Road. As is the custom I hung my keys around my neck dangling from a string and when I got home to Abbotsford, I noticed they weren’t there. The next day I back tracked and to my astonishment I found the keys hanging from the fire hydrant at 1st Avenue and Stave. Thanks so much to the thoughtful and considerate soul who, as they say, “saved my posterior.” Terry Hansen Abbotsford

NOTICE OF CONSTRUCTION Sanitary Sewer Main Works

We’ll be working in your neighbourhood As part of regular maintenance of our natural gas system to ensure the continued safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to our customers, we will be relocating a section of our system in Mission. Work is scheduled from approximately August 4, 2015 to November 15, 2015, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday. You may experience construction noise and minor, temporary traffic changes during this time. Thanks for your patience.

Starting July 29, 2015, Tiegen Excavating Ltd. are beginning their major sanitary sewer main works on Dewdney Trunk Road and on Henry Avenue. Works will begin at the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Dewdney Trunk Road. Initially road closures will not be required but delays should be expected and the use of alternate routes is recommended. Twins win silver at BCs Host squad falls in final game of baseball provincials Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

Players on the Mission Twins AA Peewee baseball squad can hold their heads high, despite falling in the provincial finals. The host Twins won the silver medal after losing 11-7 to Chilliwack in the final of the Provincial Peewee AA Baseball Championships held in Mission on the weekend. The local boys, who earned a 3-1 record in round-robin play and defeated Duncan 4-2 in the semi-final, ran out of steam, but not determination, in the championship.

New Patients Welcome!

The locals fell behind 10-0 against Chilliwack early in the game, but battled back to narrow the gap to 10-7, before eventually losing. “What was awesome is that this is Mission’s first time having a double A team in years and for them to come in second in the provincials is fantastic,” said team manager Sheri Curley. The event featured 10 teams from across the province including Mission, Chilliwack, Kelowna, Ladner, Campbell River, Oceanside, Duncan, Coquitlam/Port Moody, Prince George and Ridge Meadows. Two of the Twins players are moving on to represent the province. Yosuke Fujie and Russell Curley have been asked to play with Team BC (the winning Chilliwack squad) down in Kennewick, Washington, July 31 to August 2 at the 13 and under Battle for the Bats tournament.

FRIENDS MAKE THE BEST MEDS

Mission resident’s experience supports evidence pets are good for health

Brandon KOSTINUK MISSION RECORD

The best medication may come with four legs and fur. According to Mission resident Heather Andrew who turns 70 next month, her Shitsu-West Highland terrier named Holly fills a void nothing else but the presence of her grandkids can fill. “We eat together, Holly has to have company to eat,” Andrew jokes. She inherited the dog from her godmother, six or seven years ago, she says. “She is very much a health benefit, especially since my husband passed about three-and-a-half years ago,” says Andrew. “[Holly’s] gentle, loving, cute … [and] something to hold on to.” As a companion she’s “useful in spades,” says Andrew. Stephanie Stanton-Linder, a professional dog trainer and owner of Allstars K9 Training in Mission, says she definitely believes in the healing

properties of animals, especially dogs. Dogs are non-judgmental, they offer companionship and it’s something to take care of so they offer a degree of daily responsibility and purpose, explains Stanton-Linder. She recalls the affect her certified therapy dog Maggie had on seniors, when they visited the local hospital. “Sometimes they would just sit with her and pet her. You see them smile. You see their faces just change,” said Stanton-Linder. Studies have shown that pet ownership, by seniors especially, can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, increase social interaction and physical activity. A three-year study conducted by the Baker Medical Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia demonstrated, from a base of nearly 6,000 people, that pet owners had lower blood pressure and cholesterol and triglyceride (type of fat found in blood) levels, than those who did not own a pet. The research further extended that

other factors such as personal differences between smoking habits, diet, weight or socio-economic position could not explain away the positive results. And the benefits doesn’t just stop at heart health. Depression is another area pets have shown to help alleviate. Combating the symptoms associated with the mental illness such as bouts of sadness, the urge to remain inactive, loss of appetite or temperamental outbursts, can be quelled with the presence of a pet. Micky Niego of ASPCA Animal Watch wrote in his 1992 book Rx: Animals, “There are instances when an animal can reach an individual in way that another human cannot. “Acceptance and attention from an animal can restore feelings of selfworth and lift one from the seat of despair, depression and boredom.” Thus, if you’re lonely and have the time, a companion dog may be the route to go, said Stanton-Linder.

Dealing with loneliness

EVENTS

FOR SENIORS August 2015 May 2015

Elvis Presley singing Heartbreak Hotel sadly claimed, “I get so lonely I could die”. While loneliness impacts upon any age it tends to manifest more upon the elderly and may contribute to failing health or an early death. In a study of 1,600 seniors a finding found seniors who reported being lonely were more likely to suffer a decline in health or die over a six-year period than those who were content with their social lives. Loneliness takes on various forms and does not necessarily mean being alone – almost two-thirds of seniors in the study were married or living with a partner. At the same time, a person can be surrounded by people and feel very lonely. Loneliness may be better defined as feeling left out, being isolated or lacking companionship. Some people enjoy being alone; being a loner or a lone wolf. Being alone, to some, gives them a chance to grow and develop their own sense of themselves. They may have meaningful activities in their lives, have a pet as a companion or a spiritual relationship that is important to them. Loneliness usually refers to being unhappy with the emotional and social relationships that you do not have or with the ones that you do have. It may be about whether or not you feel connected to people. Grieving is a normal human reaction to losing someone you care about. Especially if that spouse has been a friend, lover, companion and confidante all rolled into one. Studies show loneliness can raise health risks of depression, high blood pressure and heart disease. Lack of companionship causes seniors’ to internalize feelings and can increase risk of death and stroke. Some relationships between loneliness and ill health can be biological,

similar to stress, it can cause a release of hormones that may impact the immune system. It may be behavioral, something as simple as “not having anyone to share a meal with” and some are bad at sticking to a health care regimen because they are lacking a (friend) to simply remind them to take medications. Eating is a social experience and eating alone is not enjoyable, so loss of weight may occur in some. To some, a doctor’s visit may be the big social activity of the day or month. Doctor’s have indicated that loneliness can leave people vulnerable to pain and other discomforts that an active social life could distract them from. Seniors’ start focusing on things they can’t do and they focus upon pain. Some elders have confided, “they’re sort of done with life.” A common reason is that seniors, “don’t want to bother anyone”. It is a selfish need too, as all of us are going to get old but we have to take care of seniors and be mindful of their needs, we need a societal fix to make older adults feel a valuable part of our society, which they are. For better or worse, we are what we do and if we aren’t able to do much, then we’re less and less relevant to the social fabric. If you want to avoid the feeling of irrelevancy, you need to maintain your friendships, maintain your family ties, stay an active part of other people’s lives in whatever way you can. – Information provided by Mission senior George Evens

LIKE PUZZLES? THEN YOU’LL LOVE SUDOKU! This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off.

HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle. Look for the solution in next month’s puzzle section of Living 55 Plus.

Comedic musicians perform in the park Local comedic legends Bernie and Red will take to the stage in Fraser River Heritage Park on July 31 at 7 p.m. as part of the 25th season of the Envision Financial Twilight Concert Series. Series favourites Bernie and Red have toured extensively, and always find their way back to the park to per-

form their wildly popular blend of music and comedy. With Bernie on guitar and Red belting out everything from songbook standards to biting parodies, this duo never fails to thrill audiences in the best British Music Hall style. On August 5, also at 7 p.m. the Bob Liley Jazz Quintet will perform.

The quintet plays contemporary jazz, using strong harmonies and interaction among the horns and solid, driving beats from the rhythm section. The quintet makes stimulating and groovy music that showcases the individual talents of its members while building on the inher-

ent synergies across the group. Their obvious camaraderie, energy and enthusiasm are infectious. On August 5, concert goers will have the opportunity to take

part in Envision Financial’s Full Cupboard program and support St. Joseph’s Food Bank by bringing non-perishable food or cash donations to the concert. To learn more visit theful-

accepted. For more contact the Mission Heritage Association at 604-8260277, email twilightconcerts.mission@ gmail.com or visit heritagepark-mission.ca.

Young children seem to have the utmost trust in their parents. For instance, they know that whenever they are not feeling well, their parents are there to comfort them and do whatever is necessary to make them better. A parent’s love is special, and it seems that there is nothing that they would not do for their children. As adults, we should remember that all things of this world are temporary and that there is nothing we can truly depend on or be absolutely sure of. A loved one passing away, or finances being low, or a serious illness could turn our world upside down in an instant. However, we should take heart; there is good news: we are God’s children, and His love for us is even greater than that of our parents’. And although it takes enormous courage to put our complete trust i n God, we must believe that He wants only what is good for us. What is required of us is to see God’s work in everything we do, and develop perfect trust to accept the trials of his life, and to know that with whatever difficulties we are faced, God will not abandon us. The first step in increasing our trust in God is to thank Him daily for His many blessings and to always go to Him with our anxieties.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. N.I.V. The 28th Mission Folk Music Festival brought in world-class performers Kevin Mills

MISSION RECORD

A few downpours weren’t enough to dampen the spirits of concert-goers during the 28th Mission Folk Music Festival on the weekend. The annual event featured performers from around the world and despite wetter than normal conditions, organizers said the festival had a great atmosphere in spite of lower attendance figures. “It was amazing and miraculous. Friday was a party in the rain,” said Francis Edwards, artistic direc-

tor of the festival. “When it rains like that I keep thinking, ‘who’s going to come out into a field?’ So it was really interesting to see all these people come prepared and ready for the weather.” While the precipitation may have hindered attendance, Edwards said Fraser River Heritage Park certainly needed a good dousing. “You could almost feel the park sigh in relief from the rain – it wou have been nice if it came would Wed Wednesday though,” he said with lau a laugh. Ed Edwards joked that all the people in the Lower Mainland who “pra “prayed for rain”, owe him a $1. “F “Financially it will hurt,” he sa said about the rain, but there we were thousands of pre-sold ticke that will take some of the tickets sting away.

He was more concerned that musicians that came in from across the globe would be performing to an empty field. But that did not happen, in fact the crowd that did come was ready for a party. “You don’t see people walking around groaning. People are happy to be here whether its raining or sunny. It’s been a really great weekend,” said Edwards. After a few days of rest, work begins on preparing the 29th Mission Folk Music Festival and Edwards said there will be some challenges. “We’ll have some financial issues to deal with. The challenges are there, but the resolve amongst everybody – the volunteers and the audience – are really supportive. We just have to work a little harder for next year.”

lumbar support, lights, leather seatsupport fog lights ing surfaces, a power sunroof, and LED signature daytime running lights. While it might not be everyone’s first choice in colour, the Jetta diesel’s Toffee Brown Metallic looks like a cold glass of root beer on wheels. Yum. I found it to be refreshing and different. As for the ride and handling, this Jetta does not disappoint. One of my favourite features – aside from the 150 horsepower and 236 horsepower from its 2.0L, turbo engine – is how it handles. The steering weight gives enough feedback to the driver to make tight turns engaging. And when paired with the DSG transmission, not only is city traffic more manageable, but less work for your left leg! If you find yourself towing a lot, or even wanting to go off the straight and narrow, consider the 2015 VW Touareg TDI. With ample room for five inside, this SUV comes with all the right touches. The refreshed interior design and styling is highly appealing to those who want a posh truck, without paying the equivalent price of its familiar equivalents: the Porsche Cayenne Diesel or the Audi Q7 TDI. The Touareg’s starting MSRP comes in at $55,275 and goes from there.

The Execline is the top-of-the-line trim and starts at $69,575. Okay, that’s a decent amount of coin, and it’s not for everyone, but all trims of Touareg come with the same great 3.0L, turbocharged, V6 engine offering 240 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. This engine is then linked with an eightspeed automatic transmission. The panoramic sunroof lets in a copious amount of daylight onto the Terracotta Brown Vienna Leather seats and into the cabin. A strong point of VWs as long as I can remember is how its cabin says so much with saying so little. For example: the centre stack. The perfect combination of buttons and touchscreen make the infotainment so easy to use and one that is not hard to navigate. Then there’s the fuel economy. In the city, it uses an estimated 12.0L/100km in the city and 8.1L/100km on the highway. Not bad for a vehicle that weighs in at 2,130 kg and has allwheel drive. There are a couple more TDI options for you, too. There’s the larger Passat sedan and then there’s the funky Beetle. Visit www.vw.ca for more information. Alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

(nee Chew)

Shirley was born in Big Muddy, Saskatchewan in 1922. She passed away at the age of 92 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital on July 22 and has danced off to meet Dad (Morley Cameron, 1918 ~ 2007). Predeceased by sisters, Mildred Verot, Ruby Baskin, and Evelyn Dionne; survived by brothers, Donald and Dick Wells of Alberta. She will be dearly missed by her two children, Carol and Gordon (Lani); grandson, Ryan (Kelly); and 2 great-grandchildren. Mom and Dad were married April 1947 and spent 18 years in Saskatchewan; in 1965 they retired to Powell River, BC, where she enjoyed bowling, bridge, and her sewing circle. In 1980 they moved to Abbotsford, BC where they lived out their retirement years. Shirley loved living at Chartwell Cedarbrooke Retirement Home with her many friends, sharing laughter and wine at Happy Hour every day and also her hobbies of embroidery, knitting with ‘Knit Wit’ friends, as well as her socializing with ‘red hatters’. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff at Abbotsford hospital for their loving and compassionate care of our loved one in her final few weeks. A private Memorial to be held later. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Margaret (Maggie) Calloway of Mission BC died peacefully on the morning of July 6, 2015. She was born on October 22, 1942 in Lancashire, England. Our beloved sister was predeceased by our parents Eddie and Edna Chew and brother Bernie, and is survived by five siblings: Ann (Art); Pauline (Gene); Philip (Patty); Teresa (Steve) and Edward (Lynda); and Bernie’s wife, Doreen. Also survived by 8 nieces and 7 nephews. Maggie moved to Mission in 1986 and lived on two acres with her beloved animal clan. Here, she became passionately involved in her community and the welfare of others. Maggie worked tirelessly for many charities including: SAINTS, Elizabeth’s Wildlife Center, Burnaby Wildlife Center and numerous others. She was a board member and later, Chair, of the Citizens Advisory Committee at Ferndale Minimum Security Institution, establishing a highly successful animal shelter program in Ferndale run by the inmates themselves. She was also a founding member of the Fraser Valley Humane Society, and founded the Vancouver Sun Walking Club. Decades of experience in major broadcast media, Maggie had been a reporter, producer, talk show host and columnist. She wrote regular newspaper columns for Black Press called “Simplicity” and “RenoNation” Her successful career led to her being named Woman of the Year for Mission in 2009. Special thanks to her loving and supportive friends as well as to the medical staff at Abbotsford Cancer Centre Tertiary Care Unit for their loving care, especially to Dr. Gurgal. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 16, between 1:00 and 4:00 pm, at the Mission Seniors Activity Center 33100 10th Avenue (at Talbut), Mission, B.C. Donations can be sent to the Fraser Valley Humane Society 33103 N. Railway Ave., Mission, BC V2V 1E3. Condolences to the family can be sent care of: hamcb@telus.net
