While there’s plenty of history carried forward into the new Oak Bay High School, there’s not enough room to move everything from two schools into one.

So, for everything that isn’t going into the new building, and that can’t be used in other district schools, Oak Bay is hosting its “End of an Era” fundraising garage sale, this Saturday from 7:30

a.m. to 1 p.m., says Oak Bay vice-principal Murray Allen.

“The process of going from two buildings to one has been challenging to say the least. The amount of materials that have been recycled or repurposed has been huge,” Allen says. “Whatever we can recycle, we have; this is just another opportunity to do that.”

The public is welcome to come to the West Gym Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to preview the items up for grabs. On Saturday morning, a $25

admission fee allows shoppers to choose any five items and take them away on the spot.

Proceeds from the sale will be split between programs at the school and Oak Bay High’s Cops for Cancer fundraiser, Allen says.

From chairs, tables, desks and bookshelves to books, appliances, electronics and picture frames, a huge variety of items await discovery.

The Urban Wildlife Stewardship Society set about seeking funds from the Capital Regional District for its urban deer plan the day after hearing vocal support from directors during the July 22 Planning, Transportation and Protective Services Committee.

Bryan Gates, president of UWSS, and vice-president Kristy Kilpatrick made a presentation similar to the one earlier that week at Oak Bay council outlining the Deer Plan Oak Bay pilot project to a capture-vaccinate-tagrelease pilot project planned for the fall for the Capital Regional District.

“This level of community volunteerism is impressive … it is certainly one I think should be supported,” said committee chair and North Saanich Mayor Alice Finall.

“The work being done by volunteers in the community … would serve at least as an example at the direction the province should be taking.”

Unused funds would be reserved to potentially fund the Henderson Flooring project later. The total budget for this project is $130,000. A consultant’s services were utilized to develop the specifications and tender documents, at a cost of $4,311.

Thus, the budget for the replacement and installation of the synthetic turf is $125,689.

Scoping out the storm system Coast Pipeline earned the bid for Oak Bay’s TV Inspection Program five- and 10-year sanitary and storm system assessments with a winning bid go $88,818.25 for the project.

Anti-treatment group trying different approach with feds Don Descoteau

Westside and Eastside committees continue to work toward finding sites that could host a sewage treatment plant and related resource recovery facilities.

But that isn’t stopping a local anti-treatment advocacy group from continuing its battle to convince local politicians and the Capital Regional District to halt work on the nearly $1-billion project, given what the group argues is the lack of scientific evidence of the need for treatment here.

The Association for Responsible and Environmentally Sustainable Sewage Treatment (ARESST) has sent a formal request for a performance audit of the 2012 federal wastewater regulations, as they relate to Greater Victoria, to the Auditor General of Canada.

ARESST chair Brian Burchill says the regulations, as written, contradict scientific studies that support

the screening and outfall system currently used to disperse of sewage from the south part of the region.

“It’s not as though there’s reports from public health officers that people are getting sick,” he says.

“The aquatic activities are still going on, nobody’s cutting back on their recreation. We’re using the waterfront because it’s safe to use.”

He says the existence of marine ecological reserves on both sides of the region’s two outfalls, off Clover Point in Victoria and Macaulay Point in Esquimalt, points to the fact that the sea life is flourishing in the area.

Rather than worrying about whether the region might be unfairly categorized under the federal wastewater regulations, Derman’s main concern is that the process of finding a site and choosing the right technology be done differently than before, when the CRD focused on the one-site McLoughlin Point solution that was ultimately rejected for rezoning by Esquimalt council.

Automated Transit announcement system just makes sense BC Transit’s announcement that it plans to install an automated voice annunciation device on every bus in the Victoria Regional Transit System likely came as a welcome relief to many who were finding it a challenge to move around the city with confidence.

Residents with vision challenges had been calling for some time for a system that alerts them to the approaching bus stops. In its initial response, Transit tried to insist its drivers begin calling out stops as they drove. For their part, the drivers protested, citing the need to focus fully on their most important task: driving.

Installation of the Trekker Breeze system will occur in stages, with 25 buses equipped in August to conduct final road tests. The rest of the fleet will be outfitted beginning in September.

A joint Unifor 333 / BC Transit committee had been formed to investigate technological solutions.

According to the committee, the Trekker Breeze provides a cost-effective, readily available and proven voice annunciation product that is used by visually impaired persons around the world.

“This product supports the needs of our visually impaired customers and our operators while also respecting taxpayers,” said Manuel Achadinha, President and CEO of BC Transit. “I thank the Canadian Federation of the Blind and Unifor 333 for working with us to find a cost-effective product.”

Of course, those with vision challenges aren’t the only ones who will benefit from the system.

Tourists, newcomers to the city and even longtime residents who venture to an unfamiliar part of our growing city will all find the automated system useful.

And certainly as the community also battles the very serious issue of distracted driving, asking drivers who already negotiate roads shared with other drivers, cyclists, skateboarders, pedestrians and others – all while monitoring what’s happening behind them on their bus – to add another task seems incongruous.

The question, really, is why did it take so long to arrive at this position? Travellers to many other parts of the world are familiar with automated systems announcing coming transit stops.

It seems like this decision, which makes the most sense for everyone, should have been the one arrived at in the beginning.

It will be more difficult to defend what University of Alberta economist Jack Mintz calls a “Soviet-style approach to price determination.”

LETTERS Drivers: Just slow down This is regarding the Cedar Hill X Road letter – and I totally concur with this writer.

I live between Lansdowne and Cedar Hill X roads.

This is a speedway that must be addressed.

The worst thing that can happen is to hit and kill a deer. The second worst thing is to hear the screech and the thud right in front of you. This has happened way too much on this stretch.

I once had to help a distraught grandma pull a mangled (fawn) from under her car while her little grand-daughter sat in hysterics beside the road.

Speed limits have been dropped around Victoria and I think we should expand this into Oak Bay, some areas more than others. This is one of those areas. As a resident of this street, I am all in favour

Council takes good step with deer Finally some good news from council members in regards to the deer situation. The deer cull undertaken this winter was a failure and an embarrassment to the mayor, council and Oak Bay itself.

An excellent presentation by the Urban Wildlife Stewardship Society which is proposing a better deer management method, unlike the bloody cull which angered many residents.

It was heartening to have council look at this project with open minds and realize there are indeed viable options.

It was further enlightening to have the CRD listen to the UWSS proposal and support it.

The Rotary Club of Oak Bay has donated $40,000 for the Youth Centre in the Neighbourhood Learning Centre of the new Oak Bay High School.

“We’ve always been involved in the Oak Bay community and for years a priority for us has been youth,” club president Heather Aked said during the club’s presentation to Janet Welham, sports coordinator of Oak Bay Recreation Centre. Having previously worked with Recreation Oak Bay on the current Teen Centre, “really this is just a continuation of that support.”

Funds will help outfit the centre with a full kitchen, new furnishings and equipment for

the centre that will also provide space for activities such as the school’s Interact club, Foodsafe courses and cooking classes.

The impact of the grant goes far beyond simple purchases, however.

“I think it builds community so it’s invaluable from that perspective,” Aked said. “I hope we see people who otherwise wouldn’t be involved in the community make their way to the learning centre. The hope is that it brings the community together.”

The new centre will replace the existing Teen Centre, in the double-wide trailer on the school grounds. The trailer will be donated to the Government House Foundation’s “Right to Read Program,” to be refitted then transported to a First

Nation community in Nanaimo and converted into a library.

Oak Bay Rotary raised the funds over three years through events such as the Tuscan and Mardi Gras evenings at the Monterey Centre.

“I think what’s really important is because it’s going into the new school – the community learning centre – it has that feeling of freshness to it,” said Dr. Jim Force, past-president and chair of the club’s Youth Services Committee.

Gathering and sorting the facts, weighing and interpreting events, and following the story from beginning to end is more important than ever.

MLA Andrew Weaver will dole out the stickers and chat with young readers as the special guest at the Oak Bay branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library’s Summer Reading Club Aug. 4.

“The students take out books in the summer and they commit to reading so many books and get stickers and prizes,” said Weaver, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head. “I will be in the Monterey centre library and be there as the kids come in to get their stickers and chatting to them about the books they read and things like that.”

The children’s book he highly recommends is The King, the Mice and the Cheese, a tale from 1965 by Nancy and Eric Gurney .

“It’s a wonderful book,” he said. “The king likes cheese so much that his castle gets infested with mice.”

The king’s “wise advisors” suggest cats to rid the castle of mice leading to a cat problem.

Predictably, the advisors next suggest dogs and so on. By the end, the advisors suggest mice, to rid them of an elephant problem. Instead, the king opts to share the cheese.

“I read this book to kids all the time,” Weaver said.

Their typical solution to the king’s quandary? “Kids always say ‘stop eating the cheese.’

“Kids get it, it’s a wonderful metaphor for climate change, with the cheese being oil.”

Bantams clinch Northwest title; look ahead to baseball nationals The Carnarvon-based Bantam AAA Victoria Black Eagles baseball team added to their string of victories by winning the North West Regional Baseball Championship in Tacoma, Wa. July 20.

The Eagles crushed the Bonney Lake Outlaws 9-4 in the tournament final to go undefeated and claim the two-day, sixteam wooden bat tournament.

Coaches and players now tackle the BC Baseball AAA Bantam League championships in White Rock July 31 to Aug. 3.

The Black Eagles already represent B.C. after winning the Baseball BC Provincials in July, and will advance to the Baseball Canada 15U Boys National Championship Aug. 20 to 24 in Vaughan, Ont. “It was a new experience for many of these boys playing on a larger, MLB-size diamond in the United States,” said Black Eagles business manager Sean Collett.

“We weren’t sure what to expect. But they adapted quickly

and got better as the tournament progressed.”

The Black Eagles started slow in their first game in roundrobin play against eventual finalist Bonney Lake. Despite their eight-hit performance and flawless pitching by Matt Collett and Hayden Wilcox, the teams were deadlocked 2-2 entering the sixth inning.

Then Eagle batter Noah Miller singled to right field and lead runner Trey Sjerven scored the winner on an ensuing Outlaws’ fielding error.

In Game 2, the Eagles clawed back from an 8-1 third-inning deficit at the hands of the FCA Knights from Woodinville, Wa. The Knights’ seven-run lead caved in during the fifth inning and the Victoria boys scored nine runs to edge the Knights 10-8.

The playoffs were an anti-climatic affair as the Black Eagles rolled over the Washington Wave 12-0 in a mercy-shortened

semi-final and then met their earlier rivals, the Outlaws, in the final game.

This time, however, led by strong hitting and the work of Noah Doorschot on the mound, the Victoria boys crushed the Outlaws 9-4 and walked away with championship rings for the bus ride home.

The Black Eagles now face their most daunting task and it’s not on the baseball diamond: finding the estimated $24,000 to send the team and coaches to Vaughan for the four-day national championships.

Team organizers acknowledge that they’ll need more than yard sales and bottle drives to get them to Ontario in a few weeks.

The Black Eagles are looking for corporate sponsorship to help offset costs to send the team to nationals.

Bays U18s finish fourth at BCs The Bays United U18 boys finished fourth during provincial competition in Surrey earlier this month.

“Fourth in the province is still an accomplishment for the boys,” said coach Daniel Kilpatrick.

“We had a win and a couple heartbreaking losses but enjoyed the time as a team, which in the long term I think is what the boys will look back and

reflect on as they get older.”

The U18 Bays finished sixth in regular season play in the Vancouver Island Premier League then scratched their way to the top to earn the Island title and a shot at provincials.

An armchair grampa no more Being an armchair grampa is a cake walk. Son and wife come over for a visit.

They make sure junior minds his Ps and Qs and doesn’t throw the priceless ceramic elephant at the dog across the room.

Grampa – that’s me -- reclines in his La-Z-Boy and embraces a golden moment of generational bliss that seemingly reverses the aging process.

Being a grampa all alone with the same little person when he is dropped off for a sleepover Brian is not a cake walk. It is a nervefrying, minefield-dodging marathon that makes no allowances for seniority.

Such was my fate last week when threeyear-old grandson Finnigan was dropped off for a 24-hour visit.

His babysitter was out of action and I bravely volunteered to step up to the plate even though I was on my own that particular day.

For the record, Finn is a delightful child endowed with a mellow disposition and a heart-melting smile.

He is also 40 inches and 34 pounds of liquid nitrogen.

And, he possesses a razor-sharp mind that easily matches wits with my many rusty decades of adult naivety.

Today, I feel compelled to share fragments of this amazing learning experience with all the nouveau grandparents out there who have not yet flown solo with a grandchild.

Lesson 1: Never attempt a walk in the park with a grandson and two dogs.

The dogs in question are my (Life in a Blender) Jack Russell and a wiry, contrary Mexican rescue dog with disc brakes on all four wheels.

What was I thinking?

This outdoor experiment was deemed compromised when the Jack – frenzied by low-flying sparrows – began spinning out of control around Finn and me as his taut, thinly corded leash was becoming a menacKieran ing flesh-burning weapon.

The Mexi-mutt was defiantly planted behind us but his neck was about to be snapped as Finn tugged playfully on his leash.

Other dog walkers and mothers with small fry were staring at us in disbelief.

Some head shaking and tongue wagging had begun as I hastily organized a retreat.

We were back in the truck and away from the scene of the crime before I could be fined by the SPCA or publicly shamed

by Mothers Against Gooney Grandads.

Lesson 2: Practise the mechanics of toddler extraction from the newest generation of child car seats with a doll or stuffed toy before using a real child.

It would be hard for me to describe the complexities of this manoeuvre in written words. Just trust me. These contraptions are Houdini-defying.

I raise this point as a prelude to the most important lesson: React quickly

when a child says, “I need to pee.”

So, we’re heading home, during rush hour I might add, when Finn clearly articulates the P-word.

Hang on for 10 minutes, I declare with faint hope.

Finn repeats the P-word just in case I have failed to appreciate that he is speaking in the present tense. There’s nowhere to stop, I add with fainter hope.

Then the statement that I am illequipped to brush aside: “My Momma and Papa let me pee on the grass.” Let your mind run wild.

Where does Grandpa find grassy solitude for a wee pee in the middle of the city in rush hour with mere moments to spare before potty training is set back months?

Answer: Find a quiet parking lot with a fringe of grass at the back. Waste precious seconds fumbling a squirming boy from the confounding embrace of a stupid car seat and pray the headline in tomorrow’s newspaper does not read, “Toddler allowed to pee in public; grandfather arrested.”

Final lesson: Never underestimate the redemptive powers of a bedtime story. In ours, a timid moose gets lost on a desert island, befriends a turtle, is rescued by a cruise ship and goes home to become a skydiver.

Both Finn and I can go with that.

Finnigan then sleeps the deep, peaceful sleep of childhood and a relieved, exhausted Grampa braces happily for a new day.

Died on June 7, 2015 with her family at her side. Pat was born in Calgary on May 25, 1926. She was a loving, strong spirit who enriched the lives of all who knew her.

She is deeply missed by her children; Pam and Allan (Joanne), grandchildren; Averyl (Matthew), Erin, Michael and Nolan, great grandchildren; Jonah and Lucas, her brother Eric (Midge), and all of her extended family.

We are grateful to Hospice staff and volunteers for their compassion and efforts in making our mother as comfortable as possible.

A Celebration of Pat’s life will be held on Sunday, August 9th, 2015 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the Goward House (2495 Arbutus Road).
