HIGH-PROFILE DEVELOPMENT

Flipping in Parksville Land beside city hall now has new owners, new plan JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

Build it and they will . . . tear it down? The high-profile downtown land beside city hall and the conference centre on Jensen Avenue in Parksville has been sold and the new owner has applied for a demolition permit to rip down the structure built by the previous owners just months ago. A Mississauga, Ont.-based company called Revera has purchased the property from MacLean Homes, which said in January it was planning to build 62 so-called patio homes on the six-acre parcel. Calling the development Oceana, MacLean Homes started work and built one structure, which sits unfinished on the site. The city has confirmed Revera — which calls itself a leading provider, owner and investor in senior living — has applied for a demolition permit to tear that structure down. “We are excited to have purchased the former Oceana property in Parksville, as part of our strategy to grow, innovate and lead in the senior living sector,” said Alison Steeves, Revera’s director of external communications. “While it is very early days, we know that our development will provide residents in the Parksville area with high-quality senior living choices, and we expect it will also mean job creation during construction and after the opening.” Steeves did not elaborate on what Revera plans to build on the site. “As with all of our new projects, we will be bringing the latest, innovative design in senior living to this development,” she said. “We believe this site is a unique and special place, and we are committed to creating an innovative development that will enhance the neighborhood.” See COMPANY, page A6

FEDERAL ELECTION

NDP firing shots across MP’s bow JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

Local NDP candidate Gord Johns says MP John Duncan owes an explanation to constituents for acting on behalf of the prime minister instead of the people of Vancouver Island during the parliamentary session that just ended. If voting history in this region mat-

ters, Duncan and Johns will be the frontrunners in the federal election scheduled for October. They will be contesting the new Courtenay-Alberni riding, which includes Parksville Qualicum Beach. Other declared candidates include Carrie Powell-Davidson (Liberal) and Glenn Sollitt (Green).

“John Duncan voted against restoring coast guard services, he voted in favour of the C-51 surveillance bill, and he spoke out against better federal support for ferry service on Vancouver Island,” Johns said through a news release issued Sunday. See DUNCAN, page A6
