Wildfire crews respond to eight new fires Despite milder weather over the weekend the Wildfire Management Branch urges the public to use caution when participating in recreational activities in the backcountry or using any open flame.

Over the past week, Wildfire Management Branch crews have responded to eight new fires in the Cariboo Fire Centre, six of which were human-caused.

These incidents serve as reminders to remain vigilant with any recreational activities or open fires, and to have plans in place to extinguish any fire that may occur or escape.

The fire danger rating is currently “high” or “moderate” throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre, with some pockets rated “extreme”. Although this weekend’s weather forecast indicates cloudy skies, cooler temperatures and scattered showers, these conditions may not be sufficient to significantly lower the fire danger rating.

Forest fuels require sustained precipitation to regain moisture and a return to warm and dry conditions could increase the wildfire risk rapidly.

Before lighting a campfire, you must have a shovel or at least eight litres of water nearby to extinguish the fire. Ensure that your campfire is completely out and the ashes are cold to the touch before leaving the area for any length of time.

Anyone riding an all-terrain vehicle or dirt bike should check the condition of the muffler, stay on dirt paths and avoid tall grasses and weeds.

Homeowners are reminded to consult the Homeowner’s FireSmart Manual and take appropriate precautions before conducting any open burning. Cariboo Regional Hospital District dissolved The Cariboo Chilcotin Regional Hospital District (CCRHD) received letters from the Assistant Deputy Minister, Finance and Corporate Services, Ministry of Health regarding an Order in Council to dissolve the Cariboo Regional Hospital District (CRHD). In 1996, the CCRHD was established to replace the CRHD. Now that the debt incurred by the CRHD has been retired, it will be disbanded.

Recruitment The CCRHD received information from Hilary Crowley, outlining the dire shortage of physiotherapists in BC, particularly in the north. The CCRHD will be writing a letter of support for more opportunities at medical schools in the province, which will be copied to all local governments and associations to seek support for a resolution which will be going forward to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities in September 2015.

New pathways Gord Rattray, and Brent Rutherford representing the New Pathways to Gold Society, provided an overview of the Society along with their current projects and prospects for the future. Since 2007 they have raised almost $4 million.

Some of the projects include the rebuilding or construction of over 230 historic trails, support for Barkerville’s Theatre Royale and marketing of the Highway 97 corridor to establish the area as a tourism destination.

Quesnelle Forks The Regional District Board of Directors approved the addition of Quesnelle Forks on the CRD’s Heritage Register.

The CRD will notify

the Minister responsible for Heritage Conservation so that the property can be added to the provincial heritage registry.

Connectivity The Central Coast Regional District (CCRD), and the CRD will be working collaboratively to promote the need for cellular service along the Highway 20 corridor. The CRD will identify other areas of the Cariboo Chilcotin that currently do not have cell phone coverage and will report those areas to the Canadian Radio and Television Commission for consideration.

Atlantic Power Terry Shannon, Environmental Director of Atlantic Power, and Cam McAlpine, Renewal Project Communications Coordination, appeared before the Board on behalf of Atlantic Power Williams Lake (APWL), to provide information about development of APWL’s Renewal Project at the Williams Lake Power Plant. Atlantic Power is considering the inclusion of shredded rail ties in the fibre it consumes in order to supplement the diminishing local fibre supply and to make the commitments necessary to be able to enter into a contract extension with BC Hydro.

Atlantic Power will be hosting a public open house at the Cariboo Memorial Complex on June 17 at 5 – 8 p.m. to discuss this proposal with the community.

BC Air The Cariboo Regional District will be submitting an application to the new B.C. Air Access Program (BCAAP).

Proposed projects for this intake must be ‘shovel ready’ to be completed this year and the deadline for

applications is June 22. The application will be for $26,250 to support the purchase and installation of an emergency generator as an alternate power source at the South Cariboo Regional Airport. The BCAAP program covers 75 per cent of the cost of approved Small Rehabilitation Projects, and is a component of the 10 year transportation plan, BC on the Move.

Fund The Cariboo Regional District authorized up to $13,600 of Community Works Funds energy efficiency upgrades at the Lone Butte Community Hall. The Lone Butte-Horse Lake Community Association will be installing new doors, lighting and ceiling fans at the Community Hall.

The CRD Board also authorized up to $19,500 of Community Works Funding for the Miocene Community Club to install a new well system, energy efficient furnace and new windows at the Miocene Community Hall. The well at the Miocene Community Hall collapsed and a new well system will allow the community hall to provide safe water for users.

The third application to receive support of the CRD Board was from the Esk’etemc First Nation. The request is for $250,000 in grant funding under the Economic Diversification Infrastructure program. The funding will be used to purchase and install a biomass central heating system in the community of Alkali Lake. Once complete, the heating system will supply heat to 13 buildings in the

community, including a new school. The bioenergy system will be fueled by wood chips sourced from the Esk’etemc Community Forest.

The Regional District Board received and endorsed a request for $2,000 from the Area D Economic Development service from the McLeese Lake Farmer’s Market Association.

The Area D Economic Development Service was established to support economic development activities for the benefit of Area D residents. The funding request from the McLeese Lake Farmer’s Market Association is expected to assist with the launch.

NDIT projects The Board of Directors agreed to support three funding applications to the Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT) Regional Development Funding program.

The first project to receive support was a request from Mount Timothy Ski resort.

New learning centre features robotic patients

Gold Pan City chosen as one of four locations Setting the stage for enhanced and expanded space for medical students, the new Learning and Development Centre was officially opened last week.

“The new Learning and Development Centre is another critical piece of infrastructure that will support the training of health care professionals in Northern B.C.,” Shirley Bond, MLA for Prince George-Valemount said during the grand opening in Prince George.

“The expanded space and state of the art equipment will ensure that students trained here at UHNBC have everything they need to be successful in their programs and be well prepared to work here in the North.”

The clinical simulation portion of the new centre features robotic patients that mimic health concerns of patients and allows students to develop hands-on but painfree skills in cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological and pharmacological areas of study.

The Northern Health patient simulation program has four permanent locations across the North: Prince George, Quesnel, Fort St. John and Terrace.

The simulation centre, along with the hospital’s library, was moved from the main hospital into the new Learning and Development Centre.

The 1,365-square metre (14,693-square feet) centre provides additional space for students in the Northern Medical program and medical

residents pursuing specialty training. Currently, upwards of 1,000 students in a variety of health care disciplines – from doctors and nurses to lab and X-ray technicians –work out of UHNBC, the College of New Caledonia, and other northern postsecondary partners each year and all will be using different aspects of the new building.

The centre provides a spacious learning environment for the students complimenting the services housed in the fifth floor of UHNBC. The services the new Learning and Development Centre will offer includes: a library; seminar rooms with a combined capacity of up to 140 people; a clinical simulation centre; video conferencing suites; and group study areas.

The $10.5-million dollar Learning and Development Centre is funded by the Province of British Columbia.

The project was completed

by Western Industrial Contractors, based out of Prince George.

“We want to ensure health care professionals in Northern Health have access to the latest information and they have the materials they need to help them in their health care practice,” said Cathy Ulrich, Northern Health chief executive officer and president.

“Northern Health Library Services helps with information and knowledge management services with various health care disciplines,

and we’re very excited to have this included in the new Learning and Development Centre.”

The new centre is a key health education partnership between Northern Health, the University of British Columbia (UBC) and UNBC. “The Learning and Development Centre will provide much-needed space to expand the delivery of our medical education program in the North and reinforces the university hospital’s important place in the faculty’s network of clinical academic campuses,” Dr. Gavin Stuart, dean of the UBC Faculty of Medicine and vice provost of Health said.

“The resources of this new facility will help our students and residents develop critical thinking skills and medical knowledge within a high-tech learning environment.”

“We’re proud of the health care education programs that are delivered by UNBC and in partnership with the UBC Faculty of Medicine,” Daniel Weeks, UNBC president said.

“The Learning and Development Centre will help enhance the experience of these future health care professionals and be another benefit for northern learners.”

It is expected that select UNBC and UBC Faculty of Medicine health care-related classes will be held at the Learning and Development Centre during the current summer semester, with expanded use in the fall.

The City of Quesnel is requesting proposals to source, plant, establish and monitor submergent, emergent, and riparian vegetation for the Compensation Wetland constructed as part of the West Quesnel Land Stability Project.

Right to pot cookies upheld by high court JEFF NAGEL Black Press Medical marijuana patients have a right to possess and use cannabis in the form of cookies and products other than dried bud, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled Thursday.

The unanimous decision is a major victory for cannabis crusaders who argued they should not be forced only to smoke or vaporize the drug when edible or topical products are safer and provide benefits such as delayed delivery.

“Inhaling marihuana can present health risks and is less effective for some conditions than administration of cannabis derivatives,” the country’s high court ruled.

It found the federal drug law exemption allowing medical pot patients access only to dried marijuana violated their constitutional right to life, liberty and security of the person.

Approved patients who illegally baked cookies, brewed pot tea or turned it into oil had faced the threat of criminal prosecution, but not any longer.

“This denial is not trivial,” the court ruled.

“It subjects the person to the risk of cancer and bronchial infections associated with smoking dry marihuana, and precludes the possibility of choosing a more effective treatment.”

The ruling upholds the decision by B.C. courts that dismissed drug trafficking charges against Owen Smith, a Victoria man caught baking pot cookies for a local compassion club.

Active seniors in Quesnel Last week marked Seniors’ Week in British Columbia, a week to celebrate the many contributions seniors make and the integral part seniors play in communities across the Province.

The engagement and dedication of seniors in Quesnel is visible and ensures our community is successful.

The numerous seniors in Quesnel and the Cariboo that keenly give back to make a difference in the lives of others is admirable. The volunteer work and desire to continue to contribute after retirement brings the much needed skills and support needed for nonprofits in our community.

The Quesnel Lions Club is one of the many organizations who not only has a dedicated senior participation in the non-profit but remains dedicated to supporting seniors through the development of a non-profit apartment building in North Quesnel. The site is at the corner of Reid Street and McNaughton and will be built on land that the Quesnel Lions Club purchased for this project.

Recently BC Housing has come to the table again to support this project by providing $53,500 towards the retention of a development consultant to work on a business case and complete a detailed scope of work for the development of the site in addition to a number of other geotechnical and environmental surveys. This is a significant step forward for the Lions Club and for our community and I wish to congratulate the Lions Club team on their successes to date.

Anyone can help with the Lions Club project as they are in fundraising mode and looking to raise funds for the building of the complex. They have raised over $24,000 on their ‘buy-a-brick’ campaign that you can learn more about by visiting them on Facebook (@lionshousing) or on their website at www. qlionshousing.ca Another admirable seniors focused service in Quesnel is the Better at Home program that provides nonmedical support to help seniors remain independent in their homes for as long as possible. There is always a need for volunteers to support this program and if you have an hour or more a month to spare to help out I’m sure manager, Brenda Gardiner, would love to hear from you. The office for Better at Home is located on Reid Street or call 250.992.9156 for information on volunteering or for support as a senior.

Ten thousand dollars was recently provided to our local Better at Home program from the Province of BC to support ongoing costs for the program including house cleaning, transportation costs, and day-today home tasks ensuring that seniors can continue to live in their homes and remain connected to the community.

Copies are also available at the Voice of Seniors meeting that happens the third Thursday of every month at the Legion at 2 pm.

A sample of the night houses that residents build. The name comes from the sense that once all the materials are collected/scavenged the house then goes up overnight – often later added too and they all have some kind of satellite dish and air conditioner which means they are getting power from somewhere. To flow or not to flow – Turkish electricity

I have the good fortune to know some Turks who love to travel and share their culture. Each trip has afforded new sights and delightful cultural differences.

Snippets from Turkey are just a few of my observations from this amazing historical world that tries to blend modernity with tradition. common and frequent headache for Turkish people is the often interrupted flow of electricity. Most recurrent are the brownouts that can happen multiple times a day in some places.

Less frequent, but even more frustrating, are the blanket blackouts. The most recent outage affected more than 60 per cent of Turkey on Tuesday, March 31. Residents dubbed it Black Tuesday as major cities endured a five – 10 hour lack of power. People were stuck in elevators, subways and trains for hours and many traffic accidents resulted.

In Polatli, a town south of Ankara, the outage blackened the city but soon we heard the hum of generators. Apparently, outages are so common that most businesses install a back-up system for just such emergencies.

For those without the built in system, portable generators littered the street so that the aroma of fresh baking was overwhelmed by generator fumes.

Authorities say that power usage has more than doubled since 2000 so the electrical infrastructure is not able to keep up to demand. Tangles of wire and splitters galore decorate some of the older sections of a city. Satellite dishes adorn nearly every rural house or apartment. The “night houses”, those constructed with scavenged materials and without civic approval, also sport satellite dishes and use scavenged electricity. The brownouts are usually attributed to the replacement of old wires or to general maintenance but an overload is considered the real cause. These frequent brownouts play havoc with the electronic systems of businesses, schools and government.

Turkey produces some hydroelectricity however most of the power comes from gas powered generators. But this is not enough to keep up with the increase in demand so some power is being imported from Bulgaria and Iran.

In 2014, a massive outage happened during the counting of ballots for Turkey’s general elections.

The Energy Minister Taner Yıldız said, “I am not joking, friends. A cat walked into a transformer unit. That’s why there was a power cut.

It’s not the first time this has happened.”

Most people were

Various theories emerged with the most popular being a possible cyber-attack but authorities have not confirmed nor denied any particular reason.

Thus, some locals conclude that the outage was a practice session for the upcoming June elections.

They speculate as to which street animal might take the blame for causing the next blackout.

We may complain when BC Hydro works to deal with downed trees but the electrical challenges in Turkey are far more intriguing.

There is a lot to learn so I have been mostly listening and not talking a lot, and as I get older the sound of my own voice is becoming less attractive to me. There has been a huge amount of work done on repealing, revising and updating bylaws, much of it accomplished by our young and very capable intern Gerald Pinchbeck who has now moved on after his one year internship with the City of Quesnel.

Thank you Gerald for your work ethic, mature aspect, and your friendly demeanour. A bright future is in store for you my friend.

I have been paddling on Dragon Lake a lot this spring, and on four separate occasions I saw schools of gold fish up to a pound in size. This is troubling, and I have been spoken to by several visiting fisherman, concerned for our lake and its future of being a world class Rainbow fishery. Dragon Lake is also the most important egg collection site in BC for Blackwater Rainbow fish.

Rumours have been circulating about what, if anything is to be done. Back in April I heard a gentleman in a restaurant telling three of his friends that the City of Quesnel was going to kill all the fish in Dragon Lake on May 1. I couldn’t be quiet. I asked the fellow where he got that interesting information. He said he heard the information from a friend. I explained that the City controls the water levels in the lake to keep it healthy and that’s all. The City would only be one of many stakeholders, fisheries, biologists, and the Ministry of Forest Lands and Natural Resource Operations who would weigh in on such a huge undertaking. Lee Williston, the biologist who presented to the Joint Planning Commission on June 9 was very clear in stating that no such action is in the plan for Dragon Lake in the foreseeable future. I hope I never see that day, and I plan to live a long time yet. I AM ONLY IN MY 69TH year after all.

Goldfish only belong in aquariums and backyard ponds, so please don’t dump them in our native lakes.

Mr. Williston said on Tuesday night that their mitigation strategy is to stock the lake with the largest yearlings possible, and continue to monitor the lake, do aerial boat counts, and raise public awareness.

For now, we will follow Lee Willistons plan and focus on public awareness, and educating the public on never releasing pets into nature. Talk to you next time.

Paying off Rich Coleman’s hard work is starting to pay off.

The Fort Langley-Aldergrove MLA, minister of natural gas development and deputy premier, has spent a great deal of his time over the past two years on the liquefied natural gas “file.” This initiative, promised

by Premer Christy Clark during the 2013 election campaign, was supposed to pump a great deal of money into the B.C. economy by opening up new natural gas markets, at a time when the traditional B.C. natural gas market in the United States began to dry up.

While Clark promised a debt-free B.C. and a “prosperity fund” modelled on Alberta’s heritage fund, it is likely that LNG will not be quite that lucrative. For one thing, the prices that Asian customers are willing to pay aren’t as high as projected two years ago, for another, there are many other sources of natural gas, including Russia. China has already made an agreement with Russia to buy large quantities of its production.

Nonetheless, the announcement Friday by Petronas, the large Malaysian company, that it is ready to invest in an LNG plant near Prince Rupert is a huge step forward. Petronas has long been seen as the proponent most likely to go ahead with building a plant. It has a number of customers lined up, and already owns natural gas wells in the B.C. northeast.

Petronas said that the B.C. government needs to adopt as legislation the reduced royalty rates it has already verbally agreed to. That will take place in a legislative session in July.

An environmental assessment process must also be completed to everyone’s satisfaction.

The Lax Kw’alaams First Nation has already voted against the Petronas plant, over fears that construction will damage sensitive rearing areas for young salmon near the mouth of the Skeena River. Coleman said he believes these concerns can be dealt with, but this may prove to be a very major hurdle.

Coleman has proved adept at meeting all kinds of people in his quest to bring a large LNG plant online. If he can work out an arrangement with the Lax Kw’alaams, the plant will almost certainly be built, and a new era of jobs and economic development will begin.

An ever-changing language

nglish is an everchanging language and it has always been so. Because of this, the Oxford English Dictionary adds new words nearly every year.

Some examples from this year include: Earwigger (noun), Havey-Cavey (adjective) and Lookie-Likie (noun). What nearly never happens is that a word changes its definition—unless, it appears, the Canadian Government is doing the defining.

Here is the Oxford English Dictionary’s definition of terrorism: “The unofficial or unauthorized use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.”

Bill C-51, known to those in government as “The Anti-Terrorist Act”, was rubber-stamped by the Senate this past week and is awaiting Royal Assent before becoming law. For the remainder of this article, it will be referred to as The Anti-Terrorist Act, because that is how it was sold to Canadians.

Looking at what the act covers, there will need to be a broad re-defining of the word terrorism.

Let’s look at how possible threats outlined in this antiterrorist act are defined. The bill defines them as “inter-

ference with the economic or financial stability of the country or with “critical infrastructure.” While the bill notes that does not include lawful advocacy or protest, it leaves the door wide open to vague interpretations of what that means.

Recently, an Ottawa RCMP officer threatened a peaceful protester by saying that when the new bill becomes law, “whenever you’re attacking the Canadian economy you could be branded a terrorist.”

The protest was peaceful and in a public place and the protesters right to demonstrate is protected by law.

However, a law enforcement officer felt that the demonstration could fall within the anti-terrorism act.

So the definition of terrorism may need to be amended with the words “peaceful protester.”

Then there is the privacy incursions, and yes, there are many. Terrorism-related incursions are listed in the act, but so are many other items that aren’t even remotely related. And the government can share any information gained with 17 government institutions with more to be added at its discretion.

Here’s how it’s worded: “For greater certainty, nothing in this Act prevents a

people from buying explosives, plotting to overthrow the government or to kill innocents. The items mentioned above are the most unsettling for their vagueness, their potential to be abused by government and corporations and their ability to morph into something else in the future—like the definition of terrorism.

The new definition of terrorism, in relation to the Anti-terrorism Act should read: “The unofficial or unauthorized use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims, and demonstrations (if they could possibly result in a drop in revenue) or the desire to maintain your privacy.”

So if you protest what you consider unfair, CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) can lock you up for days without charge while they try to get information out of you. Possible employers may eventually be able to look you up in a database and deny you employment because of something you said on an email once, or a minor medical condition. None of that may happen, but the Act certainly does not rule it out.

head, or their delegate, who receives information under subsection 5(1) from, in accordance with the law, using that information, or further disclosing it to any person, for any purpose.”

That’s pretty plain language. It means that the people who receive the information can share it with anyone they want to, and those people can use the information for any reason they want.

Again, the definition of terrorism may need to include those who want to keep their private information out of the hands of “any person, for any purpose.”

Daniel Therrien, Canada’s privacy commissioner, in his submission to the government wrote, “I have repeatedly heard that Canadians understand the need to share their information with the government, but that they have concerns about how this information is going to be used. They are particularly concerned with the issue of government surveillance. Bill C-51 does nothing to assuage those fears.”

There are a number of other concerns with the act.

Remember, terrorist activities are already illegal in this country. There are laws already in place to prevent

Celebrating 25 years of quality education W

hat were you doing on June 22, 1990?

If you were an MLA, you were raising your hand in support of a motion to create a northern university.

It was a simple act that came after an unprecedented social movement in Northern B.C. that changed the course of this region forever.

UNBC is 25 years old and our first generation is loaded with stories that describe the successes of our students, faculty and alumni.

We have nearly 12,000 graduates and the majority of them are living and working in Northern B.C., contributing their skills and creativity to make our communities better.

In fact, we have more graduates working in health care than any other single sector.

The story of UNBC is personified by the story of the Unger family of Burns Lake.

In the late 1980s, Wendell Unger was working in construction and decided to join the campaign for a northern

university, paying $5 to join the Interior University Society.

Sixteen thousand other northerners did as well, and today, all of Wendell’s three children are benefitting from UNBC. The two oldest are recent graduates of the Northern Medical Program and the youngest just completed her first year of studies.

UNBC has changed their family, just as it has for countless other families around Northern B.C. Samantha Unger participated in our 25th anniversary community

celebration by unveiling a display of all 16,000 names that has been installed on campus.

Earlier this month we held graduation ceremonies in five Northern BC communities and at each one, it was easy to see how the university has changed the fortunes of communities and families; not just for the person who earned the degree.

It is because of this we want to make sure that our 25th anniversary is about more than the present and the past; it has to also be about the

future of UNBC. Our 25th anniversary is serving as a platform to imagine the future of UNBC, based around integrated academic and budget plans that will be rooted in our mission and grounded by sustainability.

The planning process will certainly involve our campus community but it’s natural for UNBC to move beyond our campuses and involve the citizens and communities of Northern B.C. and beyond.

Take the opportunity to be involved in the future

of UNBC, just as 16,000 northerners were actively involved in creating it in the first place.

The next 25 years won’t be easy, with declining populations of young people and a challenging fiscal environment, but UNBC is a tremendous resource for the region and we’ll need your continued support and engagement to be even better.

Thanks to local industry support and innovation, CNC Quesnel is celebrating with its first group of students to complete the four-year Millwright Apprentice program on our campus. The first Millwright classes began here in 2012. West Fraser Mills sends most of their BC Millwright Apprentices to Quesnel for training, and other companies send students as well. Since the program began, 126 millwright apprentices have trained at our campus.

The Millwright program’s success is a result of a vision in Quesnel that our community could support an expansion of post-secondary education. The dream was championed by former Regional Directors John Bowman and Doug Larsen. West Fraser Mills supported this vision, and entered into a partnership agreement with us to use CNCQ as its trainer of choice. Many other companies in the Cariboo Region have supported the Quesnel millwright program, making it a regional success, and helping to ensure it will be here to support local industry for years to come.

Thanks to local industry support and innovation, CNC Quesnel is celebrating with its first group of students to complete the four-year Millwright Apprentice program on our campus. The first Millwright classes began here in 2012. West Fraser Mills sends most of their BC Millwright Apprentices to Quesnel for training, and other companies send students as well. Since the program began, 126 millwright apprentices have trained at our campus.

The Millwright program’s success is a result of a vision in Quesnel that our community could support an expansion of post-secondary education. The dream was championed by former Regional Directors John Bowman and Doug Larsen. West Fraser Mills supported this vision, and entered into a partnership agreement with us to use CNCQ as its trainer of choice. Many other companies in the Cariboo Region have supported the Quesnel millwright program, making it a regional success, and helping to ensure it will be here to support local industry for years to come.

RAWK Camp is calling you

Rock and rollers 8 – 18 years are invited to rock out with Speed Control ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter The Quesnel and District Community Arts Council is at it again, offering cutting-edge workshops for Quesnel’s youth. This time all the rock and rollers in the community will want to attend the RAWK Camp, July 6 – 10 where they will not only learn from the rock band Speed Control but every participant will have a chance to perform at the end of the five-day workshop. The workshop is $100 and open to youth 8 – 18 years of age.

Speed Control, instructors, performers and multi-instrumentalists, is comprised of three rock n’ rollers, brothers Graeme and Jody Peters and Ian March. The trio all come from a jazz and classical background but have turned to their true passion – rock n’ roll.

Pinhole camera, cyanotype and Vandyke photography offered in Wells Quesnel-born Kathy Kinakin will lead two hands-on historic photography workshops at Amazing Space Studio in Wells on the summer solstice weekend of June 20 – 21.

The Saturday workshop, Build and Use Your Own Pinhole Camera will show participants the basic principles behind pinhole cameras. Each will make a basic pinhole camera to create images using black and white photographic paper.

Photographers have used pinholes since the 1880s when pictorialist photography, which emphasized artistic qualities and the hand of the maker, was becoming very popular. Using a pinhole gives soft dreamlike qualities and an infinite depth of field which, when used with unusual camera shapes and compositions, creates unique, often surreal images.

The Cyanotype process was invented in 1842 and named because of the intense blue colour of the final image. The Vandyke process, patented in 1895, offers a range of rich brown tones. These processes are the easiest to do and provide a good introduction to the

procedures and techniques of printing with historical processes.

Kathy’s Cyanotype and Vandyke Photographs Sunday workshop will provide an overview and enough experience for participants to continue on their own. Everyone will have an opportunity to produce prints using each process and receive enough cyanotype chemicals to take home to print more images.

Kinakin works extensively with historic and alternative photographic processes and shoots with everything from handmade pinhole cameras to large format 16×20in antique view cameras.

She holds an Masters in Photographic Preservation and Collections Management from Ryerson, and works at Beau Photo, one of Vancouver’s bestknown professional camera stores.

Recently on a bright sunny Monday morning, about 18 pre-school students, along with their teachers, and a few parents arrived at Shiraoi House.

These students attend “New Beginnings Preschool” here in Quesnel and their ages are 4 – 5 years old.

Tomoko welcomed the group to Shiraoi House and introduced each volunteer, Sachiko, Ryoko and Diane who were there to help that morning and told the students a little about each lady.

The teachers Ms. Donna, Ms. Tiffany, and Ms. Amber from the Pre-school, with some parents were there to help.

The students were each given one of four colours of

paper to pin on their shirts for the groups they would be divide into later that morning.

Tomoko, Sachiko and Ryoko sang a song for the children called “Head, Shoulder, Knees and Toes.”

The youngsters followed along, as they place their hands on different areas while listening to the words in Japanese and English.

Then it was time to form into groups and experience different locations throughout the Shiraoi House.

A Japanese toy and a map of Japan were at the first table for the young people to play with and see on the map where Japan is located.

Table two was ink and calligraphy pen with papers.

Sachiko demonstrated how each of their names would be spelled in Japanese.

At the third Origami table, Tomoko demonstrated how to use origami paper, folding it into a shape of a puppy face.

And the fourth location was our tea room where the students tried on yukata, traditional summer clothing worn by Japanese.

I asked the children, “what garment would they like to try on? “ some students had their favourite colours, how they chose their clothing.

One young lady wanted a purple yukata and I said, “no purple to chose from, so what’s your second favourite colour?” She said pink then choosing began as there were several gowns with pink.

Ryoko, one of the teachers, or a parent and I helped the students put on their yukatas and place a Japanese sash called obi around their waist.

Then, I took pictures of each group as they came into the tea room.

There was a rotation of each group about every 10 minutes as they went to another location to experience something new.

The students took their names written in Japanese and their origami puppy home with them with smiles on their faces.

What a great way to start youngsters learning about another culture and its differences and open their minds to possibilities.

October 13, 1940 ~ May 29, 2015 L. Wayne Anderson, passed away at the age of 74, on May 29, 2015 at the Mel Miller Hospice in Edmonton, AB. Wayne is survived by his two sons, Les and Chris, his three grandchildren Hailey, Corin and Kalliste, and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family.

Farmers’ You can help preserve B.C.’s history Market B offers new flavours ritish Columbia has a very colourful history, but much of it is unknown to many British Columbians.

Fortunately, hundreds of volunteer groups work tirelessly to preserve and display their local history.

This coming Saturday, June 20, the farmers market will have a new flavour. It’ll feature some samples of fresh produce available at the Market right now. In conjunction with Amata Transition House (doing the cooking), the Quesnel Farmers’ Market vendors will be providing the produce, including sausage and chicken and customers will be able to sample breakfast and lunch recipes.

“This is a win/win/win idea”, Rob Borsato, Farmers’ Market president said.

“The vendors get to promote their current specialties, the customers get to sample some delicious food and the Amata House gets an opportunity to promote the good work it does.”

The Amata House will also be sponsoring a short food fermentation workshop on site this Saturday morning. There will be an opportunity to make a donation to the Amata Transition House at the Market. And a chance to hear the Old Time Fiddlers, who are the featured artists this week.

The Quesnel Farmers’ Market also spotlights some very scrumptious baking, from cheesecakes to berry pies and sourdough bread.

It doesn’t stop there. Food trucks and stalls are offering some real variety, from pulled pork to gyros to burritos.

The Quesnel Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday until Thanksgiving at the Helen Dixon School Site, from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The British Columbia Historical Federation

The British Columbia Historical Federation (BCHF) is a provincial umbrella federation in which many of those groups participate through their membership in the federation.

•141 historical societies, museums, archives, historic sites, and corporations are associated with the BCHF •Collectively, they represent 27,160 individual members throughout British Columbia •There are more than 150 individual (associate) memberships by British Columbians (and a few others in Canada) •The federation’s memberships represent the entire province, from Atlin to Pouce Coupe, Port Edward to Sparwood, Horsefly to Marpole—very small communities and large cities are represented and participate.

The federation has actively published a journal then

PAST TIME magazine since 1923. All memberships include a subscription to British Columbia History.

The BCHF offers several scholarships and book awards for subjects reflecting the many facets of British Columbia’s exciting history.

Members can promote students and residents in their community to participate in submissions for awards.

Residents throughout British Columbia should look in the boxes in their attics and basements for photographs, papers, old post cards and so on and make time to share items with their local museum and/or archives that offer glimpses of our history.

Visit your local museum and archives and ask what might be of interest for their collection.

These old pictures and papers might include something of major inter-

est to the local museum or archives. If there is a photograph you wish to keep, the museum/archives will scan it for their files and carefully return the original to you.

You never know what might be of special interest.

I donated a 1923 photograph of a building on a street in Vernon. The archives sent me a letter of thanks. They were thrilled with the picture itself and the fact that it showed the rest of the street and buildings because images of that street were missing from their collection.

BC Genealogical Society The BC Genealogical Society (BCGS) has been recording people, places, and dates since 1971 and has assisted thousands of researchers working on their family history.

If you have recorded some of your family history, you could share a copy with the BCGS. That might assist a researcher years from now who is working on that name or family.

They have a great website with lots of information, upcoming speakers and events. Visit www.bcgs.ca.

Writers

Authors throughout the province have preserved local history and are appreciated for their interest and preservation of British Columbia’s past.

Many British Columbians have written books on parts of B.C.’s history. Barry Gough has written several books on B.C. history.

He has just released The Elusive Mr. Pond: The Soldier, Fur Trader and Explorer who Opened up the Northwest, a fascinating story about a man actively involved in early history and who assisted Alexander Mackenzie.

All British Columbians can participate in the preservation of our history.

Unfortunately, when a senior relative passes away, his or her box of photographs, papers, stories and historic collectibles are often discarded and destroyed instead of being preserved by local museums, archives or historical societies.

So, before you discard old treasures from a basement, attic, closets, under the bed and so on, please check with your local archive or museum.

Getting out on the track Hit the track with the Quesnel Motocross Association, stop by the track and give this thrilling motosport a try. Memberships are available at Full Throttle Motor Sports, Outback Recreation, Eldorado and Make Trax as well as single day passes for those unsure about the sport. The next race will be in Prince George June 20 –21. Don’t forget, Quesnel hosts the races Billy Barker Days Weekend. Come out and cheer on the local talent.

The Quesnel Horseshoe Pitchers Club hosted their open tournament, June 14 – 15, inviting local pitchers as well as pitchers from Prince George to compete in this fun-filled event.

Two pitchers competed in the ladies “A” division, Quenesl’s Helene Boudreau and Ida Boschman from Prince George.

The ladies pitched a set of three matches with Ida Boschman winning two out of three, claiming a first place victory in this division.

The same two pitchers competed against each other once again, this time in the ladies “B” division, with Ida Boschman placing first after winning both games played.

The ladies “D” division event pitted Joyce Hamel from Quesnel against Prince George pitcher Benita Karlson.

The pair pitched four games with Hamel finishing first with only one loss.

Alice Boschman from Prince George pitched alongside another group, as she was the only pitcher competing in the ladies “E” division. She finished first in this division.

The mens “C” division saw two local pitchers, Ciril Novak and Lorenzo Ferrara.

The duo pitched five games with Novak winning four and taking home first place.

Ferrara also pitched in the mens “D” division. With only one pitcher in this division Ferrara pitched with a combined group to place first in his division.

Also competing with a combined group, this time for the mens “E” division, was Prince George pitcher Kyle Ford. Ford took first place in this division.

The senior ladies division saw three pitchers competing; Boudreau, Ida Bochman and Karlson.

The trio pitched four games to determine the winner.

First place went to the lone local competitor Boudreau.

There were six pitchers in the senior mens 30ft division.

The competitors included visiting Prince George pitchers Vic Vallee, Mike Cunningham, Herb Boschman and Esko Karlson, as well as local pitchers Phil Erickson and Marcel Pinette.

After five games Vallee placed first. Second place went to Cunningham, coming in for third place was Erickson, Herb Boschman placed fourth, with Pinette and Karlson placing fifth.

Pitching in the senior mens 40ft was Ferrara and Orlando Pellizzari, both local competitors.

The duo played three games with Pellizzari placing first after winning two.

In the mixed “A” division five pitchers took part: lone local pitcher Erickson and Prince George pitchers Vallee, Herb Boschman, Cunningham and Karlson.

Winning all four games and taking first place was Erickson. Vallee was second, Herb Boschman placed third, fourth place went to Cunningham and Karlson followed in fifth place.

Seven pitchers participated in the seniors mixed division. This included Ida Boschman, Mike Cunninghan, Kurt Bruer and Herb Boschman, all from Prince Geroge, as well as three local pitchers Pinette, Boudreau and Erickson.

First place with six wins and no losses went to Ida Boschman. Second place with five wins and one loss went to Pinette. Boudreau placed third with four wins and two losses.

Ending the event with 50/50, three wins and three losses, was fourth place winner Erickson. Cunningham brought in two wins and four losses for fifth place and pitching in for sixth place was Herb Boschman with six losses and no wins.

Next up for Quesnel’s Horseshoe Pitchers Club is the mid-summer fun tournament, Billy Barker Days weekend.

Many people want to get rid of excess belly fat. We know that kind of fat is bad for our health. One of the first things to look at when considering this problem is your alcohol intake. Alcohol seems to cause belly fat more than other foods because the liver is working hard to metabolize the alcohol and has less energy to burn off the fat which can result in weight gain.

We often hear about the high cost of medications here and around the world.

Perhaps the world’s most expensive drug is eculizumab which would cost $500,000 per year to use. It is used to treat a very rare blood disorder called atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome. Sort of adds perspective to drug costs.

Lisa helps with a number of annual fundraising efforts and has coached different sports over the years, most recently for the Quesnel Youth Soccer Association. She enjoys music, sports, travel and the outdoors. Lisa has been a volunteer with QCF since 2014 as a member of the Grant and Gala committees.

Final meet of the swim season

The Quesnel Waveriders attended their final meet of the season, placing 13th out of 21 teams in Kamloops.

Teams came in from Kelowna, Fort St. John, Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Trail, Grand Prairie and Prince George.

“I’m so very proud of this team and of all the efforts put forward at our final team meet,” coach Jerritt Brink said.

“Just goes to show that hard work truly does pay off.”

Competing for the girls was Gavin Currie, Grace Currie, Natasha Hanson, Darby O’Hara and Boroka Peters.

Grace Currie, swimming in the 10 and under category,

placed in the top 15 in three of her events, placed fourth in the 50m breaststroke and earned five personal best times at the event.

Grace Currie brought back six personal best times.

Placing in the top 13 of three of her events was Hanson.

Bringing in five personal best times, as well as a “A” provincial standard time in the 50m freestyle, the 100m freestyle and the 200m freestyle was Darby O’Hara.

And last but not least, Peters was in the top 15 in two events in the 10 and under category and brought back two personal best times as well.

The girls relay team placed 14th in the 200m freestyle.

For the boys, Luca Armstrong placed second in four events and placed first in three events at the meet.

His first place wins were in the 50m backstroke, the 50m butterfly and the 200m individual medley.

Armstrong also earned “AA” provincial qualifying time for age 11 and under in all events apart from the 50m butterfly, which he earned a “AAA” qualifying time.

Swimming in for the top 10 in all his events in the 11 – 12-year-old category was Leif Brandson.

This will be Cervienka’s final year with the club and everyone is excited to see him get the chance to move forward.

Cervienka also placed in the top 15 in three event in the open age category.

“Sonny started swimming at age 15

as a complete rookie.

Like I mean he could barely do 25m, let alone do it looking like a swimmer,” Brink said.

“To see his change, and to witness him grow over a hard three years of effort is very rewarding.”

Waving goodbye to another successful season

from A19 Starting the weekend without a single “AA� qualifying time and finishing with four was Garnet Currie.

He qualified for the 50m breaststroke, the 200m breaststroke, the 50m butterfly and the 100m butterfly.

Garnet Currie also placed in the top 10 of all his events, coming in second in the 200m

individual medley and first in the 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke and the 200m breaststroke.

Swimming in for the top 10 in all his events, fifth in the 100m breaststroke and 200m freestyle, fourth in the 50m freestyle and first in the 50m breaststroke was Austin Novak.

Novak also earned five personal best times and

received an“A� provincial standard time in the 50m freestyle and the 200m freestyle.

Deegan O’hara earned two personal best times and was in the top 40 in four events at the meet.

Swimming in the 13 – 14-year-old category and bringing back four personal best times was Ryley O’hara.

Seth Reddemann swam in the 11-12 year old

category and was in the top 30 in all of his events. In the 50 backstroke, during the preliminary events, he earned a ‘AA’ provincial qualifying time and then in the final he placed seventh and turned it into a ‘AAA’ time.

Reddemann also earned six personal best times.

Swimmings in the open age category and placing in the top 32 in all of his events was Brad Swyers.Â

He also earned six personal best times and received an ‘A’ provincial standard times in 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

Billy Swyers was in the top 15 in all of his events, as well as competing in the open age category for the 400 Free and coming in 44th place overall.

He also earned eight personal best times and

brought back a ‘AAA’ provincial qualifying times in six events.

For the boys relay team, Armstrong, Brandson, Reddemann and Billy Swyers placed third in the 200m freestyle.

Next up for the Waveriders is the “AA�

Provincials in Kamloops June 27 – 29.

Val one week after heart transplant

The Bergeron family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, medical staff at GR Baker and St Paul’s Hospitals, family, friends, co-workers, Val’s pool buddies, donor family, and acquaintances.

The Entire community for all the support on this journey of Heart Transplant you have all been just wonderful. A big thank-you to my brother Terry and niece Kerri for being there day and night through the surgery with Rich, Derek, and Dusty. Val received her new heart, the surgery began April 30th at approximately 9:00 pm and finished May 1st around 3:00 am., Val was out on an overnight pass May 9th and was discharged May 11th. Val is doing well, staying with family in Cloverdale and has to remain close to St. Paul’s for 3 months approximately. Once again thank-you so much to everyone that has been so supportive of us all, it has been truly a group effort we are so blessed to have so much support.
