ENGLISHMAN RIVER GOVERNANCE

Looking for a new approach Local group wants to see a more collaborative, celebratory model JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

The Englishman River needs to be celebrated and represented by a new, collaborative board of stakeholders, says a local habitat enhancement organization. “There’s a lot of competition for that water,” Ross Peterson, a retired biologist speaking on behalf of the Mid Vancouver Island Habitat Enhancement Society (MVIHES), said this week. “You and I want it on our lawns and in our taps, fish want it for their gills, frogs want it . . . we need more than standard government approaches to this.” According to Peterson, MVIHES is suggesting the formation of a water board that would be part of all decisions related to the river, which is a major source of water for the City of Parksville and Nanoose Bay. HEALTH CENTRE NOW WITHOUT FAMILY DOCTOR

Physician retiring JOHN HARDING

editor@pqbnews.com

The Oceanside Health Centre’s only family physician is resigning, leaving 1,700 local people without a doctor. Island Health has confirmed that Dr. Marlene van der Weyde has decided to retire from general practice. “We would like to thank Dr. van der Weyde for the tremendous contribution she has made to the OHC and to the Oceanside community and we wish her the very best in the future,” Island Health spokesperson Valerie Wilson wrote in an e-mail to The NEWS. Van der Weyde’s last day will be July 31. Three nurse practitioners will continue to provide patients with service at the OHC. “(Van der Weyde will) continue to provide consultation services to the OHC on a regular basis until a new primary care physician is in place,” said Wilson. “Island Health’s Physician Recruitment Office is working to fill this vacancy as soon as possible. We know that recruiting physicians can be challenging, given the current national physician shortage.” See Tuesday’s edition of The NEWS for more on this story.
