Goat ground control C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

All land occupiers in the Province of British Columbia have a legal responsibility to control provincially and regionally listed Noxious Weeds. And all land occupiers, such as the RDEK and the City of Kimberley struggle with ways to control invasive species, with a limited budget. The Ktunaxa are trying something different this year with the ?aq’am goat grazing project. Cailey Chase visited Kimberley Council this week to explain the project and discuss ways the city might be able to utilize goats in invasive plant control. The concept is simple. Goats eat any and all plants and they digest everything, seeds and all, so they don’t spread them. This summer, Chase is running a herd of goats out on the prairie near LD Ranch Road. That was proven by 93-year old, Dr. Jack Fletcher, who scored She is camped near the Tipi Mountain Native the ace at Trickle Creek Golf Course on June 6, 2015. Plants greenhouses.

“We’ve been spraying herbicides for 50 years, maybe i t ’s time to do something different,” she said. “This is not a pilot project, this is a proven method. And it is 30 per cent less costly than herbicides. It’s a more holistic way to treat the land.” There many jurisdictions in the United States using goats as weed control, she said. The ?aq’am project is being funded by a grant from the Columbia Basin Trust, but Chase’s goal is prove her goats can work anywhere, even within a city. “The animals have a lot of experience with the public, so there can be people around. You could let them graze during slower parts of the day.”

The goats do targeted feeding. The people overseeing the herd are with the goats all the time and keep them feeding on invasive species rather than native plants, Chase says. “It takes three to five years to get a big patch down to a manageable size,” she said, but pointed out the same was true for treating a large patch with herbicides.

Where the savings are; City provides flume contract details ralize Mark Creek to improve habitat for aquatic life. Construction upstream of the first phase will begin within the next few weeks and will last until the Fall.

The contract for construction has been awarded to Copcan Civil Ltd. (Copcan), who gained valuable experience building the first phase of the project.

After initial tenders were rejected by Council on May 19th for being in excess of available project funding, Copcan approached the City and negotiated a reduced
