Shine time
(Left) Barriere resident Harold Oliver shows off his 1923 Ford T-Bucket at the Show and Shine held on the grass in front of Sam’s Pizza and Rib House on May 31. Oliver says the vehicle was built from a car kit in 1967, and he has spent the past two years bringing it up to today’s standards, “..Giving the old girl life!” The event was organized by the North Thompson Rod and Kustom Club, bringing out 35 cars and a dozen motorcycles. “I was impressed at the turnout for a small town,” said Oliver, “It was pretty awesome!”

Weeding in the heat
STAR/JOURNAL photo: Elli Kohnert
District of Barriere employee, Amanda Taylor, worked hard a few days ago to find a shady spot during park maintenance duties as she pulled weeds from under the ballpark grandstand. Taylor noted she actually didn’t mind the heat, which at that moment was showing 32°C. The heat had rolled in as soon as the torrential rains of the week before ended, bringing record temperatures to much of B.C., and temperatures reported well into the 30°C’s in some local areas on Sunday. As of Tuesday, Environment Canada is forecasting cooler weather on its way with rain expected for Friday and the weekend.
