PROUDLY SERVING THE COMMUNITIES OF ROSSLAND, WARFIELD, TRAIL, MONTROSE, FRUITVALE & SALMO

Fruitvale sticks with Level 2 water rules

FAMILY FUN AND TASTY TREAT

BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff

Despite a little rain relief last week, Fruitvale remains at Level 2 watering restrictions. Although rain is welcome for the dry forests, it doesn't necessarily increase our supply for long, says Lila Cresswell, the village's chief administrative officer. During the summer, Fruitvale services two thirds of the municipality by the Kelly Creek Water Treatment Plant and the other third, by wells. “We appreciate our residents being diligent with irrigation over the summer,” said Cresswell. “And limiting unnecessary water use wherever possible.” That said, water restrictions aren't simply about the supply. “The more water that is used, the more treatment costs, and of course energy costs,” she explained. “So conservation is also about service costs, not only water availability.” Fruitvale residents are allowed one sprinkler per house on between 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on designated days. Underground sprinklers are permitted to run between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. in 20 minute intervals per zone.

Slices of watermelon disappeared fast during the watermelon eating contest, one of the many events at Montrose Family Fun Days last weekend. Kids gathered around big bowls of the sliced melon, grabbed a wedge and started chowing down. Winners and participants were given free food tickets as a prize. For more Family Fun photos see Page 2.

Busy weekend on river for local SAR crew BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff

Hot sun and high water set the stage for local search and rescue over the weekend when crews were called to three separate incidences from Nelson to Trail. Mike Hudson, manager for South Columbia Search and Rescue (SC SAR) was also covering the position in Nelson for three days when the first call out came Friday afternoon. A despondent woman was miss-

ing and reported to be in the 6 mile and Kootenay Lake area, said Hudson. SAR members were not dispatched to ground search as the woman was said to be dangerous and in possession of a weapon, explained Hudson. Instead, a boat crew was dispatched from Nelson to assist three officers and police dog with locating the female and her companion. Within a few hours the woman

was located and in the care of BC ambulance and RCMP members. The second incident happened in Trail later that day, when SC SAR just happened to be driving its rescue truck through the city with boat in tow. Police flagged down Hudson by the Old Trail Bridge, after receiving a report that a young male had jumped off the bridge. While calling in swift water crews, Hudson said the sub-

ject appeared from under the structure and climbed onto the bridge rail, attempting to jump. Fortunately, the young man's sister was able to help him to safety as SC SAR maintained the scene along with the police. “We were just getting the call out to members when he was getting ready to jump so it shifted gears,” Hudson said. “It all happened really quick.” See EARLY, Page 3
