TERRACE - The drive to bring an aboriginal hockey championship here moved closer with the committee struck to make the bid asking for council to waive the fees of renting the arenas for the event.

In addition to bringing the teams and fans here from around the region and country, the championship serves as a way to build relationships between the aboriginal communities and the city, showcase northwest aboriginal culture and provide role models for youths, said councillor Brian Downie to a city council Committee of the Whole Meeting May 4.

And since the games will be

webcast, they will bring national viewers online to see them, he said.

During dead time between games and periods, videos showing coverage of the area could be added for viewers to see.

Members of the committee for the championship bid came to give their support and talk to council too. That included Cal Albright from Kermode Friendship Society, Joe Bevan for Kitselas, and Yulanda Leighton from CFNR. To rent the main arena and the Hidber arena for the seven days of the championships, the facility rental fees would be about $25,000 and ice installation about $30,000.

The committee was requesting that council and the city

waive the facility rental fees, said Downie.

The cost to host could be $100,000 although it will probably be in excess of that, said Downie.

And if Terrace was selected to host the championships, then $50,000 of that would come from the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council, said Downie.

Councillor Sean Bujtas said it was an important event to grow aboriginal youth involvement in sports here.

Councillor Stacey Tyers said a concern was that First Nation youths be able to go to the games since sometimes fees can keep the people who would benefit most from attending because they can’t afford to pay.

Setting up screens to watch the games in the park would be a good idea, she said.

Committee member Yulanda Leighton said for the Meet the Canucks event, the free tickets were given out so lower income youths would get them and Kermode Friendship Society gave them out to its clientele too.

That could be done again to be sure that the youths who would most benefit would get to go to the event, she said.

Councillor James Cordeiro made the recommendation that the City of Terrace support the 2017 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships by waiving the arena rental fees.

A formal resolution will be made at the next council meeting when council accepts the report.

Rupert motel closure ratchets up housing pressure

PRINCE RUPERT The Neptune Motor Inn closed its doors at the end of April, forcing more than a dozen tenants to find alternative housing.

The Chamberlain Avenue hotel opened its doors more than three decades ago, and was purchased by Macro Properties nearly 10 years ago as part of a strategic plan.

But when it became a struggle to fill rooms, Macro Properties established a low monthly rental rate to in order to keep the Neptune Motor Inn afloat.

“If you look around town, there’s a lot of vacancies in the hotels and that hotel is way out of the downtown area. Trying to get people in there was a challenge for us,” explained Imran Jivraj, Macro’s director of property management.

“With all of the hotels in the core being vacant, we were completely dead.”

Despite its efforts, Jivraj said Macro Properties continued to lose money by keeping the

Neptune in operation.

“With the damages in there and the barriers, our (operating expenses were) going up. It just wasn’t worth it to us; we were losing money ... Every year the negative growth was getting higher and higher. We did everything we could to manage that, but it just didn’t work out,” he said.

Earlier this year all of the people renting rooms at the Neptune Motor Inn were served notices to end tenancy. Jivraj said there had been approximately 14 tenants residing at the Neptune before it closed its doors on April 30.

“For the most part, we were able to help them out, transitioning them into other places, giving them references and so forth,” he said.

Macro Properties is keeping the Neptune Motor Inn under its ownership, but Jivraj said the hotel will remain closed until the economy picks up and additional hotel rooms are needed.

“Right now, we are in a major clean up mode. There’s all kinds of issues in there,” he said.

Expenses climbed and revenue fell behind, leading to the decision of the owners of the Neptune Motor Inn in Prince Rupert to close down. And that’s caused increased pressure on those with lower incomes to find affordable places to live.

While the closure of the Neptune has reduced the number of housing options available to those in the low-income bracket in Prince Rupert,

a representative with BC Housing said the agency hasn’t noticed a spike in housing applications since notices were handed out.

“Twenty-eight families and 12 seniors households have recently applied for subsidized housing or rent supplements. Over the course

of a year, this is an average application rate,” said Donna Cairns, senior manager of communications for BC Housing.

BC Housing currently has a waiting list for individuals and families applying for social housing units in Prince Rupert.

Kitimat municipal boss moves on

KITIMAT - Kitimat’s Chief Administrative Officer Ron Poole is moving on to the District of Mission, while Kitimat’s deputy CAO Warren Waycheshen fills in as Kitimat’s interim CAO. The District of Kitimat announced Poole’s departure May 5.

On his departure, effective May 29, Poole said there was a mix of reasons to go, which essentially boiled down to his desire to spend more time with his family.

“I’m looking forward to a new change,” he added.

The move is bittersweet for Kitimat Council, especially Mayor Phil Germuth who credited Poole for doing so much over the last four years.

“We’re sorry to see him go, but we definitely appreciate Ron’s four years with the District and we wish him all the best in his new position in Mission,” said Germuth.

“There is no doubt Kitimat is much better off for having had Ron

for these four years.”

Germuth pointed to the improved relationships with the provincial government, with the Haisla Nation and industry as well.

“I know that, just myself having gotten to know Ron and learned from him these last four years...I know I can do a better job of representing Kitimat because of what I’ve learned from [him].”

Poole added that he has thoroughly enjoyed his four years being in Kitimat.

“We have loved Kitimat since we’ve been here. Regardless of a strike or anything else, we’re not leaving here with any ill feelings,” he said.

Germuth said that in this circumstance there is no severance package that is to be paid out to Poole, given that it’s a voluntary departure by him.

As for who will be Kitimat’s next CAO, the mayor says that will be a discussion taking place in the next few weeks.

“We’ll be discussing that down the road”, he said, not dismissing the possibility of Waychesh-

en remaining in the position.

“Certainly all of council have a lot of respect for Warren,” he said, noting his work history shows he has the background to be able to be CAO. Poole of course is leaving in the midst on the ongoing municipal strike which began February 28. Poole had been heading the negotiations before the District of Kitimat hired the services of a third-party negotiator to take on that task.

“I don’t see that this is going to hinder any possible collective agreement getting signed at all,” he said.

The Mission Record newspaper quotes their community’s mayor’s thoughts.

“Ron Poole’s experience and expertise are perfectly aligned with many of our major projects and initiatives,” said their mayor Randy Hawes.

LNG deal signed THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

VICTORIA - Lake Babine is the latest First Nation in northern B.C. to welcome benefits from natural gas pipeline development and the emerging LNG sector by signing a pipeline benefits agreement with the Province.

Lake Babine Nation has traditional territory along the proposed route for TransCanada’s Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) natural gas pipeline project. The agreement signed with the province ensures the economic growth generated by the pipeline, and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export industry in B.C., will benefit their membership.

If the project proceeds, Lake Babine Nation will receive approximately $3.56 million in one-time payments $324,000 when the agreement takes effect, $1.62 million as construction begins, and $1.62 million when the pipeline is operating.

Virus attack prompts Prince Rupert RCMP to issue warning

PRINCE RUPERT - Prince Rupert RCMP are urging businesses to be extra vigilant following a scam that cost one business several of its electronic records and files.

The business received an email near the end of March with an attachment entitled “Resume Douglas Chandler.zip”. When it was opened, the file released a virus onto the system. As a result, this virus infected

all of the company’s databases causing all files to be encrypted. The complainant then received a file titled “HELP_DECRYPT” which directed the user to a personal Internet site that was hosted by an anonymous network explaining how the user could decrypt their files for a fee of $500 USD which was to be paid in “Bitcoins” (a decentralized digital currency) by March 31, 2015. In the event the fee was not paid within the specified timeframe, the cost to decrypt the files would

Prince Rupert RCMP called in

experts from the Integrated Technological Crime Unit, but they determined that none of the files could be decrypted or accessed. As well, there was no way the virus, which was identified as “CryptoWall 3.0” by the Microsoft Malware Protection Centre, could be removed from the system.

“As this virus appears to be very sophisticated and attacks computer databases the Prince Rupert RCMP want to warn the community of this incident,” said Const. Matt Ericson

of the Prince Rupert RCMP. “In the event any community members or companies encounter similar circumstances pertaining to their computers we are asking users not to open the email or any associated programs, and to contact police.”

The Prince Rupert RCMP is asking anyone that may have information regarding this incident or any similar incidents to contact the Prince Rupert RCMP Detachment at 250-627-0700 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

KITIMAT - A household hazardous waste disposal event may not quite sound like carnival-level excitement for the family, but it’s an important way for you get rid of surplus toxic materials from your garage.

Kitimat Understanding the Environment is hosting the event in Kitimat, and will also be run in Terrace and New Hazelton as well.

KUTE director Ken Maitland said the event got off the ground with financial support from the local governments and from local businesses and industries.

He said the material being collected is for things not covered by the provincial Extended Producer Recycling program, and can include

things like oven cleaner or Draino.

KUTE has used the financial contributions to fly in specialized chemists who will take in the materials at the KUTE depot on Railway Avenue in the Service Centre, and properly store and transport them away.

“It needs to be treated and handled appropriately,” he said about the waste products being collected.

In total the event, among the three communities, costs an estimated $74,000.

Among the various products people can bring in includes paints, used oils and flammable liquids.

Maitland said it has been 10 to 15 years since the last similar event in Kitimat, and beyond this specific time, peo-

ple in the community don’t have places they can properly dispose of these types of items.

While these products are not designed to go in to the landfill he says it happens, and that material can contaminate soils and water ways.

Kitimat’s event runs on May 23 from 10 am to 3 p.m. New Hazelton’s event will run the same day, at Allen Park, and Terrace’s event runs May 24, in the co-op parking lot.

There’s no immediate plans to have the same event next year so Maitland recommends either get to this event or make a plan for the chemicals you have at home.

“Don’t leave half a bottle and [then] go buy another,” he said, for ways to cut down on

Feds want mine plan comments VANCOUVER -The federal Canadian Envrionmental Assessment Agency is looking for public comment on its draft report concerning the planned Brucejack Gold mine owned by Pretium Resources.

Located 65 kilometres north of Stewart and with road access from the east, the Pretium Resources project would featture a gold-silver underground mine.

The proposed project would produce approximately 16 million tonnes of mineralized material at a rate of up to 2,700 tonnes per day over a minimum 22-year mine life.

The draft environmental assessment report includes the agency’s conclusions and recommendations regarding the potential environmental effects of the project, the proposed mitigation

measures, the significance of any remaining adverse environmental effects, and the follow-up program.

The provincial government has already given its environmental blessing to the project.

In anticipation of federal approval, the company is looking or final finacing for the project which is located in an area known as the Valley of the Kings.

Rally held for affordable child care solution THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - A group of Prince Rupert early childhood educators and parents made the trek from the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre to Mariner’s Park Saturday morning as part of the Provincial Child Care Week of Action in support of overhauling the province’s model of funding daycare and early childhood support care.

It’s an area that the Government of Canada spends less on than most Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, stated a study conducted by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives in November.

Anne Falvo and Lisa Pretulac, two Prince Rupert branch members of Early Childhood Educators of BC (ECEBC), led the “stroller brigade” and outlined new policy initiatives that they would like to see implemented in B.C. “There’s licensed childcare spaces for 20 per cent of children in B.C., so that’s a really low number,” said Pretulac, adding there’s both a shortage of spaces and licensed workers who enter the field, citing low pay as a reason for the low number of licensed ECE workers available.

The ammunition behind ECEBC’s overhaul is the $10 per day child care for B.C. initiative that is spearheaded province-wide by the ECEBC and the Coalition of Child Care Advocates (CCABC).

Under the proposed plan, funding for child care centres and workers would be transferred out of the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Children and Family Development and into the Ministry of Education.

Under the current federal government, tax subsidies are offered to families’ child care costs via income splitting. Under the 10 a day plan, outlined in comprehensive detail at the website www.10aday.ca, families earning under $40,000 would receive free child care for each child and families earning more than $40,000 would spend $10 for each child for each day that they spend in daycare.

Proponents of the plan say that the increased affordability of it would pay for itself, namely for women who would be able to work instead of stay-

Kitselas elections take place in June

TERRACE - Following last month’s nominations, the list of candidates for the 2015 Kitselas Band Council election is now official, with four candidates for chief on the ballot and 17 candidates vying for six spots on council.

That’s one more council spot than in previous years thanks to an increase in Kitselas’ population.

Before this year its population was just shy of 600, with the Indian Act election code specifying that for every 100 band members there will be an additional councillor position added.

The nation’s population has now passed 600, meaning there are now six council spots up for grabs.

Nominated for chief is current chief Joe Bevan, Glenn Bennett, William (Bill) Bolton, and Brian Seymour.

The list of council candidates includes all five current councillors, Clarisa Spencer, Gerald Seymour, Judy Gerow, Wilfred Bennett Sr., and Wilfred (Web) Bennett Jr. The other 12 candidates are: William (Bill) Bolton, Dawn L.E. (Wale) Derrick, Shirley Gray, Cora Kennedy, Alfred S. McDames, Lloyd McDames Sr., Roxanne Ridler, Brian Seymour, Patricia Squires, Lynn Wright, Victor Wright, and Bonita (Bonnie) Young-Mercer.

Polling day is June 12.

The ballots will be sent out by Electoral Officer Loreen Suhr and any member may request a mailin ballot package from her.

Housing affordable in northern B.C.

PRINCE RUPERT - Despite an increase in realty prices, the B.C. Northern Real Estate Board says home ownership in Prince Rupert was slightly more affordable in 2014 than it was in 2013.

The 2014 Housing Affordability Indicators estimates 28.8 per cent of household income goes toward home ownership in Prince Rupert, down from 30 per cent last year. The cost of financing home ownership used by the board includes taxes, utilities, mortgage payments, user fees and insurances.

The figure puts Prince Rupert in the middle of the pack of the 10 northern communities included in the study. Terrace was the least affordable at 33.7 per cent, while 100 Mile House, Fort St. John, Kitimat and Prince George were also more costly. Mackenzie had the lowest percentage of income going toward home ownership at just 20.4 per cent, while Williams Lake, Smithers, and Quesnel were also more affordable.

“Overall, the affordability indicator for communities across northern British Columbia has shown only a very slight increase over the period 2010 to 2014. The trend for the affordability indicators for Prince George, Prince Rupert, Smithers, and Quesnel has remained reasonably flat,” wrote study authoer Leslie Lax of STRATEGIC Management Consulting.

The housing affordability index of 29.1 per cent in Northern B.C. was well below the provincial average of 67.9 per cent of household income being used to pay for ownership and even further below the 82.6 per cent of household income needed to finance ownership in Vancouver.

In terms of pricing, the average home in Northern B.C. cost approximately $280,000 in 2014 compared to $680,000 across the province.

Dancers perform winning numbers at Gala

PRINCE RUPERT - A showcase of the very best young dancing talent that British Columbia has to offer graced Prince Rupert on Saturday night as Gala Night 2015 took over the Lester Centre.

It was the final act before curtain call to what was an excellent week of dancing during the BC Annual Dance Competition, a yearly session of outstanding performances in all forms of dance – from solo acts to groups, children and teens performed categories of tap, classical ballet, musical theatre, song and dance, jazz, hip-hop, modern/contemporary, acrobatic and everything in between.

Though it was two performers from Port Coquitlam who swept the 2015 junior and senior performers of the year awards – Colby Mackenzie and Nasiv Sall respectively – a number of Prince Rupert-based studios and their members made names for themselves at Saturday’s gala.

Featuring everything from Egyptian pharaohs to Agrabah’s Aladdin and Jasmine to fairy tales’ wooded heroes and menaces like Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, there was a little something for everyone.

Among the groups that showed their stuff were Prince

Rupert’s E-Motion and Dance Unlimited, Terrace’s Contemporary Collective, Prince George’s Performers North and Port Coquitlam’s Fab 5.5, though dancers from all over the province took part in the week’s competition.

E-Motion impressed adjudicators Andrea Palmer and Jamie Holmes, garnering second-place showings in the categories Tap Group with “Rendez-vous”, Hip Hop Groups with “Upgrade”, Jazz Groups 12-and-under with “Gold Skies”, Novelty Groups 13-and-up with “Beetlemania”, Modern/Contemporary with “One Eye Open”, Lyrical Group with “Surrender” and Musical Theatre Group with “Aladdin”. They won firstplace in Acrobatic Group with “Countdown” and Jazz Groups 13-and-up with “Cinema Italiano”.

Dance Unlimited took home second-place performances in Acrobatic Group with “1234” and Song and Dance Groups with “Walk like an Egyptian”.

Approximately $58,000 was awarded to the week’s winners.

Judy Russell MCed the gala and kept things going with her light and entertaining hosting abilities, while Sylvia Johnson won the Mary Lester Service Award and Cindy Spencer won Volunteer of the Week.

Artists display creative talent

TERRACE - Northwest Community College’s Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art is awarding students recognition of their talent in the First Nations Fine Arts certificate and diploma program. A first year fine arts student has received the newly established NWCC President’s Art Award.

Danika Naccarella, a Nuxalk student from Bella Coola, was awarded $750 for her first place painting entitled “Crouching Bear.”

The bear is depicted as light blue in a crouching position. Naccarella enjoys using bold and vibrant colours on her artwork and wanted the piece to catch eyes.

“I’m honoured to receive this award,” said Naccarella. “As a young artist, my learning experience at the Freda Diesing School has truly helped to build my confidence and the skills that I’ve learned in my first year shine through in this design. I’m proud that it will become a part

of NWCC’s permanent collection.”

NWCC has purchased the painting and limited edition prints will be produced to use as gifts. This gives Naccarella the opportunity to start gaining exposure and recognition for her work while still a NWCC student.

Each student at the Freda Diesing School was invited to submit a painting and to be considered by a panel of judges, who selected a first place awardee and second place honorary mention.

Shawna Kiesman was awarded $250 and honorary mention for her “Wolf” painting.

Kiesman was born in Prince Rupert and is of Tsimshian and Nisga’a ancestry on her mother’s side and her father is Haida.

“Winning this award means a lot to me,” said Kiesman. “I came into the Fine Arts program without any experience, so I’m very honoured that the quality of my work would be recognized so soon by NWCC’s president.”

Prince Rupert residents raise more than $14,000 for Nepal

PRINCE RUPERT Prince Rupert residents helped raised $12,000 to assist people affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck near Kathmandu, Nepal at the end of April.

“It was incredible.

The community support has been so outstanding from start to finish; to think that we were able to raise that much money [in only 10 days],” said Morgan Sundin Gautam, who initiated the organization of the

event along with her husband Dinesh Gautam. The couple met in Kathmandu a number of years ago, with Dinesh having many family members living in the country.

“The entire community just rallied together,” added Morgan.

PRINCE RUPERT - Organizers of the Prince Rupert Relay for Life are looking for a few people who deserve some time behind bars in support of a good cause.

The Prince Rupert Canadian Cancer Society will be holding a Jail N’ Bail fundraiser in front of CIBC on Third Avenue West on May 29 to kick-off activities related to the Relay for Life, which will take place between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. the following day.

People who wish to nominate someone will need to provide the name of the culprit, when and were he or she can be arrested by the Relay Constables, how much will need to be raised to earn the individual their freedom and what offence they are being charged with - something that is open to a lot of creativity. There is a small fee for organizers to process the warrant.

Salmon Glacier to disappear

TERRACE - According to a new scientific study, the Frank Mackie glacier complex, which includwes the spectacular Salmon Glacier near Stewart, will have virtually disappeared between 2075 and 2100 in both low and high climate change scenarios.

The Nature Geoscience paper, done by UBC and involving the contributions of UNBC geology professor Brian Menounos, modeled future melt scenarios based on several projections of increasing greenhouse gas emissions and found that about 50 per cent of glacier mass will melt by 2100 in the coast mountains and 75 per cent in other B.C. ranges.

Much of the river levels are created by melting of the snowpack over the summer, but it’s later in the season that the glaciers supplement this and cool the streams, he said.

In the Skeena watershed, local glacier expert Matt Beedle, who worked with Menounos on his PhD, says that a smaller amount of the watershed is glacierfed. “The Skeena watershed has a glacierized area (current glacier cover) of about 1.5 per cent,” said Beedle.

“This is not a large amount, and means that the Skeena will not be dramatically altered in the coming decades by loss of its glacier.”

But this note of optimism is tempered when other rivers that feed into the Skeena are taken into account.

“Subdrainages within the Skeena watershed have a glacierized area of up to 12 per cent.

Loss of these glaciers in the coming decades will result in increased water temperatures and decreased flows, and will stress our invaluable salmon runs.”

He said that the Kitsumkalum, Zymoetz (Copper) and Exchamsiks rivers are such rivers than could suffer as glaciers that feed them all but disappear over the coming century.

“Glacier melt in dry, hot summers acts as an important buffer -

bringing fresh water to our rivers when we need it most,” said Beedle.

The researchers hope that the trends will be reversed and forecasts will be proven wrong if the world transitions to non-carbon emitting forms of energy production in the coming decades.

Up around Stewart the recession of at least one glacier is easily apparent.

According to City of Stewart administrator Tara Barker, the Bear Glacier which you see driving through the mountains on the highway into Stewart has shrunk dramatically.

“Just in the last 10 years everyone notices it used to come right up to the highway before there was the pool there,” she said of the viewing area near town.

As for the Salmon Glacier, she said the size of it would make melting less apparent.

Rainmakers fall short in soccer zones

PRINCE RUPERT - Though they didn’t win any games at zones this past weekend, one major positive the Charles Hays (CHSS) girls’ soccer team took away from Friday’s matches was the knowledge that almost every single one of them would be back for another go at it next year.

Save for standout goalkeeper Harjyot Sidhu, every player is eligible to return for the 2016 season, a fact that the team can build on through their growing pains this year when they played well, but went winless during the season.

“I expect that everyone will return next year. The girls have developed friendships through the team and are committed to soccer,” said head coach Kyla Ragan.

“The Grade 12s next year are the girls that [assistant coach] Craig [Munro] and I first started coaching when they were in Grade 9 and we are looking forward to how they will play their last high school year.”

The Rainmakers hosted the region on Friday and Saturday and came up short in both of their quali-

fying games.

A 6-0 loss to the Caledonia Kermodes, historically the strongest squad in the northwest, kicked off the tournament on Friday morning. The ‘Makers then followed that up with a better effort against Kitimat’s Mount Elizabeth Secondary (MESS), but ended up on the wrong side of a tight 5-4 loss to the Eagles.

“The girls played a good game against Kitimat [Friday]. They played their positions very well.

Our defence worked hard to keep the play area short and it worked in our favour with offsides and keeping the ball in MESS’ end of the field. They were able to stop and control the ball to place it in our players’ feet,” said the coach.

Part of that returning group for next year includes a Grade 9 student on the rise.

“Hannah Witchen had an excellent defensive game and won MVP for her performance,” Ragan added.

Caledonia (CAL) went undefeated in qualifying play with their win over CHSS and another 3-0 win over the Smithers Secondary Gryphons. Their berth in the final meant that Smithers and MESS would duke it out in the zone semi-

“Brittany had lots of opportunities [against MESS]. She made a lot of good runs, but kept losing the ball right before the shot. Her penalty shot was perfectly executed,” said the coach. A strong group of

forwards will be back donning the blue and green for Charles Hays, including Reagan Pomponio, Suttira Johansen, Waite, Tanveen Sahdra, Katerina Samaras and Charlotte Kobza. Tanveen Randhawa, who sat out her Grade 12 year this season due to a torn achilles tendon, will also be graduating and moving on from the team.

TERRACE - Competition in this year’s Northern Rugby League is expected to be stiff with three strong teams vying for a berth to provincials.

The Terrace Northmen, the Williams Lake Rustlers and the Prince George Gnats will play one home game and one away against each team – 80-minute, full 15s rugby – this season, which sees its first official game May 23 here against Williams Lake.

“It’s very strong rugby,” said Northman Evan van Dyk, back this season after spending last year abroad. “The level of competition will be way higher – every year it seems to improve.”

He said he anticipates the Northmen will be stronger than ever thanks to some tough coaching by Mike Homeniuk and Jamie McKinstrie.

“They’ve got a real focus on conditioning, so although it sucks at practice we’ll probably be faster and in better shape than we’ve ever been heading into the season,” said van Dyk. The team’s roster is fairly consistent compared to last year – a strong core with a few new faces – but they’re always looking for more bodies.

“We always want to see new faces out,” he said. “No experience necessary. Doesn’t matter what shape they’re in, if anyone wants to try it out we practise Tuesday and Thursday at 6 p.m. at the college.”

TERRACE - The Terrace Youth Soccer Association (TYSA) is asking that those using Christy Park as a dog run remember to clean up after their pups.

Yes, that’s in reference to what you think it is (TYSA board member Blaine Kluss said the club’s recent field clean up yielded “no fewer that 100 dog remains on that field.”) but it’s also in reference to something people may not even realize is an issue.

And that’s the leftover bits of wood from sticks used to play fetch.

“We found hundreds upon hundreds of wood shards all over the field,” said Kluss.

“I don’t think people realize the kind of damage that can do to a kid’s leg. I’ve seen it. It’s not every day, but it happens frequently enough for it to be a concern.”

He said the problem has “been growing exponentially over the past few years” and said while the refs do pre-game safety walks, he encourages those using the park to “bring a ball down. Let the dog go chase a ball.”

The soccer season is now underway after a week delay – the fields were too soggy and needed one more week, and the club needed more time to sign up coaches – another cause for concern.
