Fire destroyed a commercial building on the Langley Bypass Tuesday night. Crews were called to the scene around 10 p.m. and said there didn’t appear to be any occupants inside the building. Several acetylene tanks exploded inside the building and the roof collapsed.Firefighters from both the City and the Township were called out to fight the fire, which took several hours to extinguish.

An avian flu quarantine has been lifted from 10 of 13 affected farms so far by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The latest update from the regulator shows that as of March 7, two Langley-area farms and one Chilliwack farm remained on the infected list, including one commercial Langley grower who was ordered to destroy 53,000 table egg layers, and two smaller

non-commercial operations in Aldergrove and Chilliwack that were forced to destroy 180 birds. The CFIA has adjusted the zone restricting the movement of poultry products to “reflect quarantines being lifted from individual premises.” The revised restricted zone now uses the Trans-Canada Highway as its northern border rather than the Fraser River and adjustments have been made to the Continued Page 5

Langley man taken on wild ride in stolen truck M O N I Q U E TA M M I N G A Tim e s Re po r t e r

A Langley man went on a wild and dangerous ride with a thief who stole his Ford F350 truck on Monday, March 2. Around 3:40 p.m., Langley RCMP received a 911 call from the owner of an F350 pickup truck who said that he had interrupted someone trying to steal his vehicle at 272 Street and 28 Avenue. The owner told 911 operators he jumped into the box of his truck just as the suspect drove off with it. The suspect driver allegedly attempted to shake the owner off the truck by driving erratically.

The driver then stepped on the brakes and the owner went through the rear window from the box of the truck, hitting his head on the dashboard, said police. The suspect jumped out of the truck then, just six blocks away from where he originally stole it. He managed to immediately pick up another F350 truck, which ended up being the same truck that police had pursued earlier that morning after it had been originally stolen in Surrey. The Langley victim who was thrown through the box cab to the dashboard received relatively minor injuries as a result of his ordeal, confirmed police.

But the thief’s actions didn’t stop there. IMPACT was alerted that the stolen F350 truck they located in Surrey earlier had been spotted travelling eastbound on Fraser Highway in Langley towards Abbotsford. As IMPACT investigators made their way, Abbotsford Police received a call from a victim of an alleged carjacking incident in the parking lot of the University of Fraser Valley. The suspect was able to leave the area in the stolen Hyundai Santa Fe. Minor injuries were sustained by the owner of that vehicle, which was recovered shortly after in the downtown core of Abbotsford. The

original F350 stolen from Surrey was recovered in the university parking lot. “Early indications of our investigation are suggesting that the three incidents appear to be related,” said the officer in charge of IMPACT, Insp. Peter Jadis. “We are working very closely with both Langley RCMP and Abbotsford Police Department to find those suspects responsible for these crimes.” IMPACT is appealing to witnesses of any of the three crimes. Call Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200 if you witnessed any of these situations or the suspects.
