Since our early beginnings in 1959 as the first inland pulp mill in BC, Celgar has taken our commitment to the Kootenays seriously… and to heart! We are extremely proud to have played a major role in the history, growth and development of Castlegar and the surrounding communities. 

As one of the largest, long term employers in the West Kootenays, we currently employ close to 400 people. Some of our employees are the third generation within their family to be working at the mill and many of them have worked here for decades.

Celgar, and our employees, donate regularly to causes within the community including non-profit associations, charities, sports and community events as well as annual scholarships. Summer 2015 will be the Grand Opening of The Celgar Pavilion located near the swimming ponds in Millennium Park, downtown Castlegar. Celgar is pleased to be a major sponsor of this multi-use facility.

We are committed to the sustainability of our mill and its ongoing positive impact on the local economy. We depend on external sources of wood for our operations and support sustainable forest management when sourcing our fibre from the sawmills and forest operations in the region.

We also take our responsibility to environmental stewardship seriously and are proud to be amongst the industry leaders in North America for our environmental performance. We recover and recycle much of the fibre waste and chemicals used in our process, and also convert the steam generated into energy. We generate enough energy to self-supply all our own needs as well as provide Green Energy to the local power grid .

Our high quality product: Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK) pulp is used around the world in paper, tissue, toweling and hygiene products. We produce approximately 500,000 Air Dried metric Tonnes annually.

We live where we work… and we’re proud to call the Kootenays home. Working together to be the best for our communities, our environment…. our future! www.celgar.com

The Doukhobour Discovery Center

Rich Heritage Several thousands of years ago, the Lakes Salish people first fished and built their winter pit houses in the area. Almost 200 years ago, in 1811, David Thompson canoed down the Columbia River, and over 100 years ago, between 1908 and 1913, Canada’s largest internal migration took place when Russian Doukhobor migrants moved from the Prairies to the West Kootenay area. They arrived at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers, a historic transportation area, bringing their peaceful, agricultural lifestyle. By 1913, 5,000 Doukhobors had arrived, developing basic agriculture, orchards, lumber mills, irrigation projects, roads, bridges, apiaries and the construction of over 90 communal villages. Castlegar’s spacious, beautiful valley became a new place of refuge and was named “Dolina Ootishenie,” the “Valley of Consolation,” by Peter V. Verigin, the Doukhobors’ leader. The rich legacy of the Doukhobors has informed Castlegar’s unique culture. Today, an active Doukhobor community holds Russian language classes, maintains publications and Internet sites, organizes Sunday prayer meetings, youth activities, festivals, talent shows, fundraisers for worthy causes and is active in peace groups and other benevolent endeavours. 7 CASTLEGAR | 2015 VACATION GUIDE

OR REPAIR.

Highlights Brilliant Suspension Bridge At 15 metres high and 100 metres long, the Brilliant Suspension Bridge majestically spans the Kootenay River just downstream from the Brilliant Dam and is part of the Trans Canada Trail. The Brilliant Suspension Bridge, built in 1913, connected the Doukhobor villages with their agricultural land and was used for about 50 years. Public outcry saved the historic bridge from demolition in the 1970s, and in 1995, it was declared a National Historic Site after years of community perseverance. In May 2010, after it was restored, the bridge was opened to foot traffic and stands as a proud testament of Doukhobor craftsmanship.

Kootenay Gallery of Art With a colourfully painted floral exterior, the Kootenay Gallery invites you to explore a diverse collection of exhibits and gift shop. The grounds are gorgeous too, with a working sundial, butterfly and xeriscape gardens and a habitat restoration project overlooking the Columbia River. Featuring works by local and international artists, this gallery is a treasure well worth discovering.

Canadian Pacific Railway Station Museum One of the best-preserved stations in the province, the Canadian Pacific Railway Station (CPR) Museum is housed in a building over a century old. Once inside, you can envision the hustle and bustle of the passengers who used to board the trains between Castlegar and Nelson. Now this remarkable museum displays antique treasures, local memorabilia and an authentic caboose, and the station agent’s residence on the upper floor is a wonderful example of the early 1900s. It also houses Castlegar’s news archives a delightful gift shop and has beautifully maintained grounds.

Highlights

Doukhobor Discovery Centre Open from May to September, the Doukhobor Discovery Centre is an expansive village that will introduce you to the origins of traditional Doukhobor culture and its unique lifestyle, an intrinsic part of Castlegar’s heritage. Nestled on the banks of the Columbia River, the beautifully landscaped grounds and perfectly restored buildings are located on orchard land near the original Doukhobor settlement of 1908. Over 1,000 artifacts showcase the culture’s pioneering spirit, fascinating arts and crafts, customs and religion. Stroll the spacious grounds where a statue of Leo Tolstoy, a Doukhobor sympathizer and benefactor, gazes down upon you. The audio-visual room has an exceptional photo and documentary archive and the gallery for books, music, film and souvenir items.

Verigin Memorial Park Verigin Memorial Park sits in tranquility among manicured flower gardens and park grounds and with spectacular views of the Kootenay and Columbia River valleys. An important Doukhobor burial site, the park contains a large white crypt with the remains of much-respected Doukhobor leaders Peter V. Verigin and his son, Peter P. Verigin, and their wives. Also buried on the site are Peter P. Verigin’s daughter and her son. A modern guesthouse contains a visual display. The Verigins made an immense contribution and impact to the Doukhobor movement, both practically and spiritually, and to this day, the local community holds annual commemorative services to celebrate the Verigins and all ancestors who committed their lives to peace.

Millenium Park Splash Ponds The Natural Swimming Ponds opened in the summer of 2014 and are the key project of Millenium Park. This recreational space consists of a series of ponds adjacent to the Columbia River designed to bring residents and visitors to the river’s edge and provide a comfortable, fun swimming area. Created for all ages, the ponds provide different recreational opportunities for families with very young children through to seniors. The ponds are complemented by other healthy outdoor recreational opportunities. The recently constructed outdoor Rotary Green Gym and two full-sized soccer pitches are also part of the park. Summer of 2015 will see the completion of the Celgar Pavilion which will feature an indoor kitchen, covered picnic area with seating for 150 people and a concession stand. 11 CASTLEGAR | 2015 VACATION GUIDE

In the fall of 2014, Castlegar took home a prestigious international community prize at the national awards ceremony. The culmination of a multi-year campaign on the part of the Castlegar Communities in Bloom program, the win came with ďŹ erce competition but nationally and internationally. Castlegar was awarded a Five Bloom rating once again and, received a special mention for community involvement in oral displays and was named the winner of their population category. Castlegar continues to participate in this worthwhile project, which encourages community involvement to make long-term heritage and environmental plans, as well as emphasizing community beauty and tidiness. A vibrant and busy gardening community abounds in Castlegar. The annual garden and nature festival in May is always bustling, and this year Communities in Bloom and the Castlegar Garden Club will play host to the BC/Yukon Peony Show the last weekend of June with judges, guests and entries from across the province and beyond.

16 CASTLEGAR | 2015 VACATION GUIDE

Festivals and Fairs Winterfest: The first weekend of December hits, and you feel like doing nothing but hibernating. That is, of course, until you realize that Castlegar’s Annual Winter Fest is going on. You put on your hat, mitts, jacket and boots, grab the kids, and head to downtown Castlegar in the gently falling snow. The parade is a delight for kids both on the floats and on the sidelines, and the festivities are capped off with the arrival of Santa Claus himself. The tree in Spirit Square is lit up and kids have the chance to sit on Santa’s knee and tell him what they want for Christmas.

Pass Creek Fall Fair: Whether young or old, there’s something for everyone at the Pass Creek Fall Fair. The fair features a dog agility show, baking, arts, crafts, woodwork, a wide variety of poultry, and of course, fruits and vegetables from local gardens. The Pass Creek Regional Exhibition Society hopes that the experiences offered at the fair will serve to educate the public and raise awareness about agriculture and rural lifestyles. The fun and slower pace of fall fairs is embedded in our memories, so be sure to bring the family out so you can provide your children with wonderful memories of their own. The fair runs September 19-20, 2015 at the Pass Creek Fall Fairgrounds.

Spring Fling: Each April the Castlegar’s Spring Fling shuts down the streets of downtown for a one-day, family festival. Events that day include a very popular street hockey tournament and a show n’ shine for car enthusiasts. There are lots of carnival-style games for the kids and music fills the air with two stages of entertainment. Visit www.castlegarspringfling.ca for details on this year’s festivities. Bluegrass Jamboree: The Castlegar Bluegrass Jamboree is held on the idyllic Pass Creek Fairgrounds and runs the second week July each year and offers bluegrass lovers and players three days packed with nothing but sweet bluegrass music. The Jamboree is formatted so that musicians play three songs and then the next group takes the stage. This is repeated throughout the day and helps keep the musical landscape fresh. Proceeds from the event go toward the Pass Creek Fall Fair. Castlegar Sunfest: A popular family-oriented event held annually on the first weekend in June so mark June 5-7, 2015 on your calendar and get ready for fun. You will be treated to three fun-filled family activities including a parade, talent show, pancake breakfasts, music, food vendors, vintage cars, skateboarding, dances and the Miss Castlegar pageant, all topped off with a burst of fireworks.

Kootenay Festival: LET’S CELEBRATE! is a multi-faceted event encouraging the recognition and appreciation of our community diversity through entertainment, cuisine and interactive educational activities, displays and performance. The festival provides an opportunity to experience and celebrate the heritage, culture, ethnicity and artistic expression that enriches the Kootenay region and makes us proud to call it our home. This year the festival will move to Millenium Park and will be held July 25. Admission is free!

Millennium Park The City of Castlegar’s Millennium Park is a 23 hectare green space built with the vision of it being a premier, regional destination park with a strong connection to the water. The park saw the opening of the natural swimming ponds in the summer of 2014. The recreational space consists of a series of three ponds adjacent to the Columbia River designed to bring residents and visitors to the river’s edge and provide a comfortable, fun swimming area. Created in early 2000, the paved 1.8 kilometre long Millennium Walkway follows the Columbia River past sandy beach, lookout points, gorgeous flower gardens and picnic tables. Interpretive signs explain the area’s ecosystems and history. The park already includes two full size soccer fields, and the GreenGym which is a Rotary project that includes 12 pieces of outdoor fitness equipment. Watch for more progress in the park as a set of sand volleyball courts and an off-lease pet area connected by the well-used Millennium Walkway are future enhancements to the park. The Castlegar business community and its Rotary clubs have also come together to provide an exciting new covered multi-use facility for the park which will be completed in the summer of 2015. The Celgar Pavilion will feature an indoor kitchen, covered picnic table area with seating for 150 people, a concession stand and storage facilities for the soccer association. It will provide a gathering place sheltered from the elements while still enjoying the scenic park area for everyday family gatherings, special events and picnics.

Do More Outdoors Rock Climbing: Breathtaking Views The Castlegar area is quickly becoming known as one of the best rock-climbing locations in British Columbia. Beautiful bouldering, sport, traditional and alpine climbing locations are abundant and close to the city—the Waterline Wall, Kinnaird Bluffs, Arrow Lakes, Slocan Bluffs, Gimli Peak and the alpine routes in Valhalla Provincial Park are popular favourites. If you want to test your skills in a safer environment, head to Selkirk College’s indoor climbing facility where padded floors, plenty of holds, and a bouldering cave will keep you in your comfort zone.

Syringa Creek Provincial Park: the Area’s Premier Campground Located on the end of Lower Arrow Lake, which is part of the Columbia River, Syringa Creek Provincial Park has been a popular destination for years. It’s an ideal family base camp for fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, and relaxing. The park is home to elk, deer, and a herd of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, and is one of the few remaining examples of Kootenay grassland ecosystems.

On the Water Exploring Castlegar by water is an exhilarating way to see the landscape and discover beaches and wildlife. There is an ample supply of boat launches and marinas, as well as local area outfitters that rent canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.

Grab your snowmobile, snowshoes, snowboard, cross-country skis or ice-fishing gear and celebrate the wonderful white stuff that makes Castlegar a true outdoor delight.

Nancy Kalawsky

Cross-Country Skiing When the snow falls, creating magical wintery pathways, break trail with your cross-country skis among the pristine forests and fields. Head to the popular Paulson cross-country ski trails. Maintained by the Castlegar Nordic Ski Club, the 45 kilometres of packed and tracked trails wind you through magnificent wilderness, where you can take a break in one of the day-use cabins. When a place like this has 15,000 to 20,000 ski visits every year, you know it’s something special.

Snowmobiling Snowmobiling is one of the fastest growing sports in British Columbia! A wealth of groomed trails will expose any enthusiast to unique terrain and the area’s natural beauty. The Castlegar Snowmobile Association grooms trails, maintains mountain infrastructure and promotes safety in the mountains.

Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding What better way to celebrate all things white than skiing or riding in the mountains, and Castlegar is ideally located between two of North America’s top ski and snowboard areas. A one-hour drive will take you to the world-class steeps and deeps of Red Mountain Resort or the authentic culture and deep snow of Whitewater Winter Resort. Take a weekend and try them both!

Family Fun

Hybreed Photography

Are the kids anxious to get moving? Castlegar has an array of family activities to keep the little ones amused. The Castlegar & District Recreation Complex is home to a pool, hot tub, ice arena, fitness centre and many programs and events. Adjacent to the complex, Castlegar Rotary Skatepark is a youth hub where the kids can skateboard, bike and ride scooters. Or don your swimsuit and get wet at one of two family friendly locations - hit the splash ponds at Millennium Park or get wet at Kinsmen Park’s large water spray park. If the weather is a little less cooperative or you want to beat the summer heat, take in a movie at the five-screen Kootenay Centre Cinemas or a performance at the Brilliant Cultural Centre. And if you’re longing for peace and quiet, find some fantastic reading at the Castlegar & District Public Library.

Getting Here

Stefanie Harron

Castlegar is located within a region referred to as the “Kootenays,” which is located in the southeastern corner of the province of British Columbia in Canada, roughly halfway between the cities of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Calgary, Alberta, and three hours’ drive north of Spokane, Washington, USA. We are a halfday drive from British Columbia’s popular Okanagan region and a full-day drive to BC’s Pacific Northwest. The Kootenays are roughly the same size as Switzerland, and the mountainous area itself is encircled almost entirely by the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers. Castlegar is well serviced by transport carriers and easy to get to by car, bus or air. For driving times and distances as well as general carriers and US border information, please call the Castlegar Visitor Information Centre at 250-365-6313. 36 CASTLEGAR | 2015 VACATION GUIDE
