Support Kimberley athletes Kimberley Nordic Club starts scholarship program to assist cross-country ski athletes C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
As many Kimberley residents are aware, there are two athletes, Colin Ferrie and Molly Miller, on Team BC at the Canada Games who hail from Kimberley. They both compete in cross-country skiing, and both could be considered to have a legitimate shot at medals. Cross country ski competition begins on Monday in Prince George. Any parent of a competitive athlete can tell you that while the athlete puts in hours of sweat in training, the family puts in a lot of support, both emotional and financial. The local Nordic Club is justifiably proud of Colin and Molly. They recognize the hard work and financial burden of producing a top level athlete and want to help other local kids who may be considering pursuing cross-country skiing. The Kimberley Nordic Club executive recently resolved to set up a bursary/scholarship for talented local cross-country youth. “As young cross-country skiers advance the costs are huge for training, equipment, travel and time away,” said Ross Banner of the Nordic Club. “It’s a lot for ski families to handle. The Kimberley Cross Country community has been very generous with Colin and Molly and the Club wanted to maintain the spirit of helping.” To perpetuate the Bursary the Club has commenced an ongoing program of selling Club items with logos, with the net proceeds going directly to the Bursary fund. The Club is selling water bottles $8, lanyards $2, fleece toques $20 and sport caps $20. The items can be purchased at the Nordic Club kiosk, in Kimberley at Togs, Kootenay Mountain Works and Bavarian Home Hardware. The Nordic Club invites all Kimberley residents to help this initiative by purchasing an item and show the Kimberley Nordic colours.

Last weekend’s Winter Market at the Conference Centre was a great success. Taking advantage of large crowds at the Kimberley Alpine Resort on Family Day weekend, it was an opportunity to showcase what Kimberley and area merchants and organizations have to offer, Above, JJ from Bears Eatery in Kimberley enjoyed herself while offering tastes from her restaurant. Ultra-marathon coming to Kimberley C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Could you run 50 k in 12 hours? 100 k in 24 hours? Most people would answer no, but a surprising number of people would say, ‘yes, I can’. These are the ultra-marathon runners, a group for whom a 42 k marathon is not enough. This August, ultra-marathoners will be in Kimberley to take part in a new race, the inaugural Black Spur Ultra. The course is set in three loops, which
all start and finish at the Kimberley Alpine Resort. Loop one takes the runner around North Star Mountain, the second out to Horse Barn Valley and the third through the Nature Park around Myrtle Mountain. “Don’t like loop courses? Wait until you see these trails before you say that!” - Blackspurultra.com The race is being put together by the Full Moon Adventure Company, out of Bellevue, Alberta, which has been creating successful endurance events since 2002. Brian Gallant of FMAC promises challeng-
ing terrain, epic scenery and a world-class venue to those who sign up for the Kimberley Black Spur Ultra. ““The Kimberley Alpine Resort is a natural choice for a mountain ultra because it has the perfect blend of natural beauty, rugged terrain and world-class amenities,” said race organizer Brian Gallant, owner of Full Moon Adventure Company (FMAC). “The community is genuinely friendly and welcoming with a spirit that embraces outdoor adventure.” See ULTRA, page 5
