Canfor announces shift reduction at Canal Flats mill

81 employees affected; will be offered positions at other Canfor operations C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

The Canal Flats saw mill will begin operating on one shift as of May 4, 2015, Canfor has confirmed. Corinne Stavness from the corporate head office in Toronto says that due to a lack of economically available fibre in the region, the saw

mill will go from two shifts to one. “This reduction will affect 81 Canal Flatsbased employees, all of whom will be offered positions elsewhere in the company,” Stavness said. “The Canfor executive and management teams recognize that this decision will involve great personal cost to employees at our Canal Flats mill. Unfortunately, the available fibre supply in the region is not sufficient to support the processing capacity and we must make this reduction. See CANFOR, page 3

The BCSPCA is starting a new province wide campaign called the Million Acts of Kindness, which seeks to bring awareness and funds to the volunteer organization and the animals it cares for. On Thursday, three members of the Kootenay Ice visited the shelter to get a look at a number recently added puppies that are looking for a home.

“One of the first things that people can do with the Million Acts of Kindness is come out to the Ice game and purchase a tennis ball to win some prizes,” Brenna Baker, manager of the BCSPCA East Kootenay Branch, said. That will be tonight’s game (Friday, Feb. 5). There are some great prizes to win. You buy a tennis ball, which will then be tossed on the ice rink. See ACTS, Page 5
