Alert Bay honours Cranmer Gazette staff ALERT BAY—Hereditary ‘Namgis Chief Bill Cranmer joined a select group of local citizens when he was awarded last month with the Village’s Freedom of the Municipality Award. The presentation was made by Mayor Michael Berry during the

Dec. 8 inaugural meeting of the new Village Council. It recognized Cranmer for having “dedicated his efforts towards the improvement of the Health, Socio-economic and Cultural environment for the benefit of all Cormorant Island citizens.” The proclamation also cited

Cranmer’s support and involvement in the historic Alert Bay Accord, which promotes social and economic cooperation and collaboration between the ‘Namgis First Nation and the Village of Alert Bay. Cranmer joins former village mayors Gordie Peterson and John

Rowell, librarian Joyce Wilby and former councillor Neil Langille as Freemen of Alert Bay. The late Dr. Jack Pickup and Joan Farewell, former village administrator, had also previously

Holiday quakes shake off coast Gazette staff A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck 211 kilometres west of northern Vancouver Island early Friday morning, Earthquakes Canada reported.

No damage was reported or expected and no tsunami activity generated in the Jan. 2 event off Port Hardy, which followed a closely spaced group of five earthquakes in the same vicinity

New Westminster. Earthquakes Canada reported five earthquakes off B.C.’s coast the weekend of Dec. 20 and Dec. 21. The first of those struck

at 3 p.m. Dec. 20, about 517 kilometres west-northwest of Vancouver. Another hit at about 7 p.m., and then there were three additional quakes between 1:40 a.m. and 2:45 a.m. on Dec. 21.
