Kimberley escaped with a fairly typical snowfall on Sunday and Monday, while other East and West Kootenay communities were not so lucky, but it does appear that winter has set in after a slow start. This would be a good time to revisit the City of Kimberley’s snow removal plan. The City’s Operations Services Department looks after approximately 100 kilometres of paved and gravel streets. The City also has a small unit to clear main sidewalks and trails. When a snowfall occurs, priority routes are cleared first — that means main streets and emergency routes with steep terrain. This ensures that traffic can access such facilities as the schools, special care facilities, the central business area and the ski hill area. Next completed are collector streets, which may not have steep terrain but do have heavy volumes of traffic and include Rotary Drive, Knighton Road and 312 Avenue. Residential streets and back alleys are then attended to. If another snowfall occurs before crews have been able to clear the residential areas from a previous snow-

Residents are asked not to park on streets during snow removal operations. Your residential streets will be cleared, but it can take time if it snows steadily for a few days. Several times during the winter, city crews will also remove snow that has built up on major routes. You can

assist by making sure you are not parked on the street during these times. Citizens are also asked to make sure there are no unused vehicles, boats, trailers, etc. on the streets. Residents are also responsible for removing snow and ice from sidewalks fronting their properties.
