January 2, 2015 Frozen Material in Curbside Containers Winter temperatures can freeze garbage and compost inside your curbside container and make it difficult to collect. To avoid injury and damaging containers, collection workers are only able to provide limited shaking and hitting of containers against the truck to dislodge frozen materials. To prevent compostable materials from freezing to the sides of your container, please line it with crumpled newspaper, paper, dry grass, branches or cedar needles. Please also ensure your garbage and compost containers have a secure lid when placing them outdoors to prevent rain from entering and freezing. If you have any questions, please contact the City of Abbotsford Engineering Department at eng-info@abbotsford.ca or 604-864-5514.

Compost Your Christmas Tree

Snow & Ice Control

Real Christmas trees are compostable. After the holiday season, once you have removed all decorations, you can either dispose of your tree by using the curbside compostable collection program or by dropping off your Christmas tree for a minimum donation of $2 per tree at the Net Zero Waste Abbotsford Composting Facility, located at 5050 Gladwin Road. All donations will be given to the Abbotsford Food Bank. If you have any questions regarding disposal of Christmas trees and other compostable waste at the Composting Facility, please call 604-557-7065. If disposing of your Christmas tree by using the curbside compostable waste collection program, you can cut up your tree into sections and place it into your compostable waste container or into tied bundles (according to curbside collection requirements). If you have any questions regarding using the curbside collection program, please check www.abbotsford.ca or call 604-864-5514.

The goal of the City’s Snow and Ice Control Program is to maintain travel routes where there is snow and ice on roads and restore mobility for the traveling public. Our roads are classified: • first priority (high volume and strategic arterial and collector roads, and major access roads to hillside areas); • second priority (remaining arterial, hillside areas and collector routes); and • third priority (remaining roadways not identified as first and second priority). First priority roads are maintained until conditions are under control subject to worker/equipment availability and weather. Only then are resources redirected to second priority routes and subsequently third priority routes. The City does not remove snow and ice to bare pavement conditions. The public is encouraged to use caution, and wherever possible, park vehicles off the streets. Abandoned vehicles or vehicles obstructing roadways will be towed without notice to allow for snow clearing operations to continue and towing costs will be the responsibility of the vehicle owners. We ask that you do not plow snow from private properties onto the public roadways as this can result in visibility hazards and obstructions and will require additional time for clearing roadways. The City will work 24 hour days until the snow ends and first priority routes are passable for travel. Additional information on our Snow and Ice Control Program can be found at www.abbotsford.ca/SIC. For more information, please contact the Engineering Operations Division at 604-853-5485.

It’s the end of an era for drivers of older vehicles in the Lower Mainland. AirCare stations will shut down for good on New Year’s Eve, and motorists will no longer line up to pay for mandatory emissions testing. The requirement in order to get vehicle insurance in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley was widely seen by drivers as a costly nuisance, particularly as cars got cleaner and most vehicles passed without being forced to get a tune-up. But defenders argue the provincial government was wrong to scrap the TransLinkoperated program. “We know air quality from vehicles has improved over the last 10 or 15 years because we’ve been monitoring vehicles,” said Vancouver Coun. Heather Deal, chair of Metro Vancouver’s environment and parks committee. “It was a mistake to discontinue this program. It will endanger the incredibly positive impacts it’s had over the years.” The province’s environment ministry cited “great progress” in reducing air pollution from light duty vehicles as emissions technology improved

ALEX BUTLER Abbotsford News

The AirCare station on McCallum Road in Abbotsford has closed, with the end of the provincial vehicle anti-emissions program. and noted the AirCare failure rate has fallen from 14 per cent in 2007 to less than eight per cent. No new program has been announced to replace AirCare, but the province is expected to release a discussion paper in the spring on possible options to cut pollution from heavy trucks. Deal said she’s hopeful something new comes to tackle diesel trucks because Metro testing on roads has found alarming emissions from some “gross emitters.” Dave Gourley, general manager of AirCare, said he “absolutely” believes Lower

Mainland residents have breathed easier because AirCare enforced pollution limits for 22 years. He notes nearly one million vehicles failed AirCare tests at some point since the program began in 1992. Most were repaired and returned to the road cleaner, while others got early retirement. So far this year more than 34,000 vehicles have failed AirCare, although that’s down from a peak of around 120,000 vehicles a year in the mid1990s. “The technology changed and the cars can more or less diagnose themselves,”

Gourley said, making AirCare less relevant in recent years, at least in its current form. “It’s hard to make an argument in favour of it,” he said. He said it’s too soon to say if enough drivers will now ignore check engine lights to significantly worsen vehicle pollution and air quality. AirCare’s end here leaves just urban Ontario’s DriveClean program in Canada, although there are more than 30 similar emission control programs in the U.S., with some new ones still being added. The program is revenueneutral, with fees only used to cover the program expenses – $16 million in 2014. Newer vehicles are exempt from testing and fees have been reduced this year. Motorists whose insurance expires in the dying days of 2014 have a couple of options to avoid a final AirCare test. One way is to not renew the policy until 2015 and perhaps take transit or find other ways to get around for a couple of days. Gourley says drivers can also get short-term or temporary insurance from ICBC to bridge them over to early 2015. For those who stick to tradition, AirCare staff will be on duty until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Nativity Drive-Through no more Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

An annual holiday tradition in Abbotsford has raised more than $43,000 for the Salvation Army and collected more than 35,000 pounds of food for local food banks in the last 24 years. The Nativity Drive-Through, held by HillCity Church (formerly Abbotsford Christian Assembly), has also been visited by almost 20,000 carloads of families in that time. But Dave Schapansky, executive pastor of the church, said people are ready for a change, and the Nativity Drive-Through will no longer be held. The event featured 11 outdoor scenes portraying the Christmas story, with lights, live animals, and actors dressed as Mary and Joseph, angels, wise men and shepherds. The public viewed the scenes

2014 would be the last year for the event, and church members have now been thinking about what they can do next. “We don’t know what that is yet, but we are excited about new opportunities involving more of the community,” Schapansky said. He said HillCity Church will continue to support the community through its involvement with Cyrus Centre for homeless and at-risk youth, the Samaritan Inn for men in addiction, the Starfish Pack File photo program to provide food for A scene from the former Nativity Drive-Through at HillCity Church in kids, and as a satellite centre for the Abbotsford Food Bank. Providing a sense of hope

MCC has had a presence in Lebanon since 1977, and in Syria since 1991. In early 2012, in co-operation with more than 14 in-country partners, MCC responded to the Syrian crisis by providing humanitarian aid, including emergency food assistance, non-food item distribution, water, sanitation and hygiene, shelter support, education, peace-building and trauma healing. Since then, MCC has provided $20 million (U.S.) in assistance to people in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. “Our work is dedicated to peace, development and relief – with relief being our primary focus over the past few years – for the Syrian IDPs (internally displaced persons) and communities inside Syria to remain sustainable,” said Naomi. That includes cash allowances to IDPs and host families, distributing non-fooditems — including school kits, blankets and hygiene items and clothing — and offering trauma awareness training. Naomi said the cash allowances serve two purposes: “One, provide a sense of hope,” she said. “People knowing there is someone out there thinking of them goes a long way in resiliency. Secondly, to provide them with a small income that meets their basic, most prioritized needs.” With funding from the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB), food assistance has been provided for 6,000 displaced families in Qalamoun, Syria and food vouchers for 3,125 Syrian and Palestinian refugee families in Beirut and southern Lebanon between 2012 to 2014. In collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, MCC has also provided $3.25 million in programs to displaced families inside Syria and Lebanon with urgent household needs and shelter. About 9,000 people are on

Lebanese widow Dyala and her children receive a goat from MCC representatives Doug and Naomi Enns. The program aims to build social cohesion between struggling host communities and Syrian refugees by marketing dairy products. “I’m more encouraged than tired because of their tireless effort. And they could give up – they don’t have to be doing what they are doing.” The Arabic phrase Inshallah — which means God willing — is real there, she said. “Nobody really knows what is going to happen by the end of the day and I think we’ve really started to also incorporate that into our own days. “For us that means not thinking as much about the future and more about the present.” Still, as Doug explained, the couple is much safer than many of their beneficiaries and partners inside Syria. Many of them say when they walk out the door in the morning they don’t know if they’ll see [their families] again. And that’s a daily occurrence. “They don’t take goodbye very lightly anymore,” added Naomi.

Small victories

There are 500,000 schoolaged refugees inside Lebanon and about 300,000 have no access to formal or informal education. MCC is providing ongoing support in several schools in the region, including helping to start kindergarten classes for refugee kids in Lebanon. MCC also sends school kits that are packed in Canada and the U.S. for the young students.

“Kindergarten for Syrian refugees — that’s my most favourite project in Lebanon,” said Naomi. “It’s providing something that’s future-looking. When I think about the education projects I get really excited. It gives a sense of normalcy.” In Lebanon, preschools are privately run and parents must pay. Because students must pass a basic knowledge and English language test to get into the first grade, Palestinian and Syrian children are at a disadvantage. But that is changing. Of the 23 kids who graduated from the initial MCC-sponsored kindergarten class, all passed their entrance exam to Grade 1. “Our school has an educational component,” said Naomi, who proudly attended the first kindergarten graduation ceremony with Doug.

The most difficult part of the mission in Syria is having to say no to “many, many legitimate requests,” said Doug. “It’s a protracted crisis, war is not sexy, [it] doesn’t attract a lot of dollars. Since March 2012, MCC has been able to do $20 million of programming, which is phenomenal, but the needs are only increasing. And the requests are coming and we’re not able to keep up with the demands,” he said. “And you deal with all kinds challenges, road blocks along the way... and try and get things done.” The small victories matter. “That excitement of the tiny, little things that work, the human connections that occur, I think that’s what keeps us going,” added Naomi. Standing in the cavernous warehouse inside MCC’s new centre on Gladys Avenue, Doug and Naomi are surrounded by stacks of colourful blankets knitted locally, and shelves are filled with packaged items that go into the hygienic and eduction kits that will eventually end up in places like Lebanon, Haiti and Zimbabwe. The supplies for the kits are donated and then assembled in homes, schools and churches. A hygiene kit costs about $6 and contains a hand towel, tooth brush, nail clippers and a bar of soap – essential items for those on the move. When Naomi sees Dennis Vogt, material resource manager at MCCBC, inside the warehouse she gives him a heartfelt thank you for the role he and the rest of staff in Abbotsford play in making a difference a world away. Doug explained they have often been present when the kits are distributed and have witnessed the joy on people’s faces. Naomi asks for a picture, handing her phone to her husband. “Our partners and refugees … like to see where the stuff is coming from and who’s actually connected. It’s part of the connecting – it comes from somewhere.”

School to offer forensic science course

Students will learn crime scene investigation techniques Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News

www.abbynews.com

New Patients Welcome!

The skills and techniques used by forensic scientists will make the jump from the crime scene to the classroom after the Abbotsford school district approved the creation of a new hands-on course at Rick Hansen secondary school. An elective science course, Forensic Science 11 “aims to enhance scientific literacy, by developing students’ critical-thinking and problem-solving skills while applying concepts from various sciences (such as mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry) to the analysis of physical evidence from crime scenes,” according to a proposal by Rick Hansen teacher Silvia-Carmen Comanescu, who developed the course. The course will look at the collection of evidence including fingerprints, hairs and fibres, poisons and intoxicants, trace evidence, and blood and DNA. It won’t, however include entomology, human remains or firearms as topics due to their “sensitive nature.” Comanescu wrote that the course will show students how science can be applied beyond the classroom. “This applied science course … requires observation, communication, and organization skills, thus benefitting the overall learning experience of the students, and motivating them to develop their study and process skills in an engaging and meaningful way toward personal development and toward relating school work to life.” The school board voted unanimous to approve Forensic Science 11 as a board/authority authorized course. It can now be offered in the next school year.

Teen organizes hospital fundraiser ‘Claus Cares’ project expands in its second year An Abbotsford teen organized a fundraiser over the holiday season, resulting in $700 being collected for Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Langley Memorial Hospital. Samyta Rai came up with the idea of the fundraiser last year as part of her senior leadership class at Yale Secondary, and called it “Claus Cares.” She and her group fundraised about $300 and bought Christmas gifts for kids who were in the hospital over the holidays and donated money to the pediatric unit. This year, Rai decided to expand the project, adding Langley Memorial Hospital. Rai and her friend Gabby Fisher organized the fundraising, and the group sold doughnuts and pizza in downtown Abbotsford every week for a month. Rai, who graduates in the spring, said she didn’t just see the project as a school assign-

Many families were very appreciative of what we did and I will never forget the smiles we put on the kids’ faces.”

Rai is now working on another project to raise funds to buy school supplies for all the kids in a school in Raikot, India. She came across the school while visiting India for the first time last March, and saw one of the students picking up crumpled, ripped paper to use at school. Rai is again visiting

India in March, when she will deliver all the school supplies. “I am very fortunate to be able to live in Canada and be able to buy my own school supplies. It breaks my heart to see kids at a young age of five struggling to go to school and get school supplies. That’s why I want to help them out,” she said.

On Point Columns heralding the new year are usually reflective of the past 12 months, or contain heartfelt, hopeful wishes for the next dozen. Fine. I’ll reflect on the utterly disconcerting comments that so often appear on Facebook in the wake of a violent death, and heartily hope that such inane blabber disappears in the near future. Wishful thinking, indeed. The FB dialogue that took place in the aftermath of the death of Marcus Larabie last Friday night at Bourquin Crescent and Mill Lake Road was a disturbing example. The online story we filed was barely hours old before it started – the idle speculation, the finger-pointing, the self-righteous sermonizing, the condemnation of the driver, who happened to be an off-duty cop, and verdicts is-

sued upon the victim, who happened to be a 14-year-old boy who tragically lost his life. Cruel, useless chatter. In several cases, the posts were highly offensive, and brutally hurtful to the victim’s loved ones, the driver, and his family. Let’s jump to conclusions and lay blame! Was the youth in the crosswalk? Wearing dark clothing? On a skateboard? Was the driver texting? Drinking? Who was it? Why name him? Why not? So many premature questions – including some with obvious answers if one actually took the time to read the initial story; and others that require expert, painstaking investigation of the circumstances. That’s what police and accident analysts do, and that work often results in something called facts. Those require corroboration. They

need careful analysis. And even then, facts can be elusive. Witnesses make mistakes. Their observations conflict. Fact is, many people can’t wait before they post their thoughts on Facebook. Some don’t even seem to think. Multiple cases of mental incontinence. It used to be called gossip. Now the new buzzword is crowdsourcing. The reliability is about the same – next to zero. Real witnesses give their statements to investigators, who don’t post every facet of their analysis and evaluation on Facebook, or for that matter, tell the media until they’re good and ready. Everyone else just passes on unsubstantiated rumours and hearsay. But that’s exactly what much social media communication is about. Yes, it does have merits. It is a way to connect over distances, to bring people together. And it should be acknowledged that many folks offered online

condolences to the Larabie family. Yet social media is also rife with vapid observations on all and sundry. No qualifications of any kind required. Legions of armchair experts issuing forth on every subject – frequently unfiltered in terms of human respect and feelings. Perhaps some people are responding to comment strings from friends, and don’t realize they are posting for the whole world to see. Maybe they do, and just don’t care. Whatever the reason, there’s so much digital chafe out there I have to wonder if the next generation will even recognize or remember what wheat looked like in order to separate the two. Some won’t know what that last reference means, and many won’t be bothered to find out. In the case of Marcus Larabie, we know some things for certain. He was 14. He was killed on a road by a car, the day after Christmas, in the dark. He had family members, who now grieve. For the sake of that family, until more facts become established, let’s leave it at that.

letters

The other reasons for the season This is in response to the letter “Missing the Real Meaning of Christmas” published on Dec. 26. I would put it forth that perhaps if the letter-writer wants to see God in the classroom and in the Christmas pageants, then perhaps she ought to have her grandchildren attend a Christian school. If her grandchildren are attending public school, then it is not surprising that there is no mention of Jesus. I would also point out that Jesus does not get to call December his own month. There are other religions

and cultures that have holidays in December and we cannot just say that it belongs to Christians alone. Christmas, as we know it, evolved from the pagan tradition of Yule, which was assimilated into Christianity in order to conquer and convert the pagan masses. I would encourage you to read more about that before you go shouting from the rooftops that Jesus is the reason for the season. He is not, since the whole season is cobbled together from a number of different cultural traditions.

Christmas is about love and family and friendship. This love, family and friendship is the spirit of what Jesus wanted us as Christians to believe. If you can’t put aside your own self-importance and proclaim that everyone else (many of whom might not be Christian, so how dare you say that secular, public schools ought to cater to any religion), is celebrating wrongly, then perhaps God’s protective wall has enclosed you a little too much. Litterbugs should live at the dump As I drive and cycle around urban and rural Abbotsford, litter and garbage on the side of the roads is a horrible problem. Garbage is everywhere. There are several problem areas: Downs Road and Town Line, Downs Road and Glenmore, the end of Coral Avenue where I lived. I am sure there are others, Sumas Mountain being one. City hall should do more about the problem.

What is the point of planting pretty flowers when there is garbage all over the place. Clean the place up first, then plant flowers. Also good citizens have a responsibility to clean-up around the area they live in. These garbage dumpers and litterbugs belong on another planet, living in a garbage dump, or cesspool. After a frightening workplace accident, an Abby electrician takes a new career path Justin BEDDALL Abbotsford News

The electricity surged through his 6’9” frame, locking his jaw and scorching his flesh and hair. Abbotsford electrician Craig Bazan was switching over a transformer at a job site in Burnaby when he was electrocuted. He’s still not exactly sure how it happened, but he likened the sensation to being hit by a sledgehammer. After the violent jolt, he could only see small dots of light. He smelled burnt hair, and when his vision finally came back into focus he looked down. “When I saw my hands I didn’t know what to think. [They were] really burned,” he said, adding “from fingertips to elbows… charred marshmallow.” He was terrified, but alive. “A lot of guys

trade straight out of high school was looking like a smart one. He already had his journeyman ticket and had just purchased a house with a yard for his young family, which had recently welcomed a second

baby girl. But now he was in an ambulance speeding to the burn unit at Vancouver General Hospital. All he could think about was his family, his job and his future. He had a mortgage and his wife was on maternity leave. There was also the intense physical pain. In one procedure, doctors had to peel the burnt skin from his hands and arms. His wife, Jane, a nurse, arrived and stayed at his bedside. Later, as he thought about returning to his job as an electrician, he felt reluctant. “For me with my young kids, I was struggling with the idea of going back to electrical. “I was never anxious before.” After the accident, Bazan spent six months attending physiotherapy. One day he asked his physiotherapist if drawing would help his ongoing hand therapy. The answer was yes: gripping the pencil would help his recovery. Growing up Bazan was always drawing, something he’d do at school or with his mother, who was passionate about painting watercolours. But he never thought about pursuing art as a career. “It’s hard to make a living as an artist. “I thought to myself, Continued on A11

Passion for drawing returns quickly From A10

I’m a big, physical guy, I thought I’d get a trade. His penchant for drawing quickly resurfaced. “Once I picked up a pencil I got right back into it. As he rehabbed, Bazan decided to order a $200 tattoo kit online. Not long after, he tattooed a small revolver on his leg — a tribute to John Wayne. He started spending more time drawing tattoo-style art and inking his friends and family. Bazan said his wife fully backed him on his career shift and even volunteered to be tattooed early on — she got a symbol depicting the birth signs of

their two young daughters. On his forearm, Bazan’s got an inky family narrative, all of it his own handiwork, including three roses for his wife and daughters and a paint brush and pencil for his mom Jenni. “It’s really the only way to learn, he said about his selftattoos. “Then I decided I wanted to approach it as a job. So he contacted veteran tattooist Brian Martin, owner of Brian’s Tattoos in Abbotsford, who liked Bazan’s portfolio and later gave him a job at the shop. “I was incredibly nervous, Bazan recalled about tattooing his first paying client. The art seemed simple

enough: a square with an arrow inside — but putting straight lines on flesh is tricky, especially on the ankle, where his client wanted it. Despite his nerves, his hands remained steady. “The client was happy. And with every tattoo comes more confidence. Recently, he tattooed his first animal portrait, a detailed grey and black piece with script that was a heartfelt memorial for an owner who had lost a dog. “As a tattoo artist I make some neat connections (with clients). “I just love it, he said about his decision to become a tattoo artist. “It’s been so good for me.

Fall classes closed as teachers strike, Sept. 3 The ongoing teachers’ strike forces the cancellation of the first day of classes at public schools across Abbotsford. With exploratory negotiations having broken down between the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and the province, teachers picketed local schools. While the province says the BCTF’s demands are unaffordable, local teachers say they’re sacrificing their wages to demand smaller classes for students. www.abbynews.com/news/273785961.html Guilty verdicts in Surrey Six killings, Oct. 2 Cody Haevischer and Matthew Johnston are found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and six counts of first-degree murder in the Surrey Six killings. A 2014 highlight reel

Abbotsford athletes and teams made their mark at home, abroad, and sometimes both in a 2014 that was jam-packed with victories and noble defeats. Hometown heroes A pair of Abbotsford athletes signed contracts in 2014 with major sports clubs just down Highway 1 from their hometown. In late June, Vancouver Canucks chose Jake Virtanen sixth overall in the NHL entry draft, making the local teen the highest-drafted Abbotsford hockey player ever selected in the draft. A month later, he signed an entry-level contract with the Canucks, news that Virtanen broke himself on his Twitter account. (Abbotsford’s Devon Toews was

for Canada at major tournaments in Australia and South Africa, and Steve Marshall, who competed at the FIVB World Championships in Poland. Sophie Schmidt and the Canadian women’s national soccer team continued to gear up for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015. But there were many others who were new to the national gaze: Nearly half of Canada’s senior men’s team in the fall’s World Gymnastics Championships in China were composed of Abbotsford Twisters Gymnastics members – veteran Ken Ikeda and newcomers Zachary Clay and Robert Watson; Field hockey player Amrit Sidhu and rugby player Lauren Kerr won silver with their respective teams at the Youth Olympics; Bryana Buttar helped the Canadian under-15 girls soccer team to the gold medal at the inaugural CONCACAF U15 Championship in the Cayman Islands; Chelsea Jenner sparkled in limited playing time the Canadian senior women’s national softball team at the World Cup of Softball IX; W.J. Mouat grad Tristan Etienne and his under-18 men’s basketball Canadian teammates won silver at the FIBA Americas tournament; UFV golfer Aaron Pauls was named to Canada’s team for the 2014 World University Championships, as was UFV golf coach Chris Bertram; Yale Secondary grad Jason Hignell captained his team to upset wins at the 2014 Rugby League Commonwealth Championships in Scotland; And in December, Jake Virtanen was named to Canada’s World Junior Hockey Team. Provincial champions MEI’s senior boys volleyball team claimed the AA provincial title in November, after finishing the season a dominant 31-1, their only loss coming to the top-ranked AAA team. And in May, the Abbotsford senior girls rugby team claimed the AA provincial championship with a 26-12 win over cross-town rival Robert Bateman Timberwolves.

Abbotsford’s Jason Hignell played in several rugby tournaments for Canada in 2014. UFV’s women’s golf team also won silver in the Canadian Colleges Athletics Association, while the men took bronze. PGA pros They learned their craft on the greens and fairways of Ledgeview Golf Course, and in 2014 Abbotsford golfers Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor served notice that they’re at the pinnacle of Canadian golf this year through a series of sparkling performances. Hadwin won two Web.com tournaments and finished at the top of the circuit’s money list to earn a PGA Tour card. He finished 10th in just his fourth PGA tournament. Taylor also earned a card with a strong finish in the Web.com playoffs, then won his fourth PGA tournament, collecting a paycheque of $720,000 in the process. In doing so, he became the first Canadian golfer to win a PGA tournament in five years. Game over The Abbotsford Heat’s five year-run in Abbotsford came to an end May 2, when the Grand Rapids Griffins fended off a third-period comeback en route to a 5-3 home-ice victory to win their best-offive first-round playoff series 3-1. A little more than two weeks prior, the City of Abbotsford announced that it would pay $5.5 million to terminate the last five years of its 10-year supply fee agreement with the Heat’s NHL parent, the Calgary Flames. The move led to the Heat’s departure from the city. Keystone runners-up The host Abbotsford Pilots came up just short on home ice in the Keystone Cup final. The Pilots, seeking their second Western Canadian junior B hockey championship in three seasons, fell 5-1 to the Beaver Valley Nitehawks in front of a near-capacity crowd at Abbotsford Recreation Centre. The Pilots, who received a berth in the tournament as hosts, entered after a long layoff following defeat in the Pacific Junior Hockey League semifinals. After falling to Beaver Valley in their tournament opener, the Pilots reeled off four straight wins to punch their ticket to the championship game.

Ford’s smallest engine available here in Canada sure Or will the steering have enough feel that I won’t be packs a lot of punch. And considering it only weighs constantly inputting actions? 98 kg when assembled, this 1.0L, 3-cylinder powerIn this case? Hell(cat) yes. I was blown away as to plant is pretty impressive. If you opt for this bitehow well this car drove, not just on the track, but on sized engine, you’ll be getting 123 horsepower and the street, too. Disclaimer: if you need to get anywhere 125 lb-ft of torque (148 lb-ft with the overboost). The quickly, this isn’t the car for you. People will talk your Fiesta was designed and engineered in Europe so it ear off about it if you give them an opportunity. isn’t bad to look at either.

Question of the Week

Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC: MSRP $37,200 (AMG version is $50,500) Another vehicle that shone brightly is Mercedes-Benz’s GLA. The luxury compact crossover starts at under $40K but does so many things well. It has a hatchback, great styling and the fuel economy is quite good, too. I wouldn’t even need the AMG version to keep me happy. It’s just a stellar vehicle. MINI Cooper S: MSRP starts at $25,490 Perhaps the biggest disappointment this year comes in the shape of the MINI Cooper S. I’ve loved these cars for so long, but perhaps electronics have ruined it for me. Yes, it’s much more competent and has some great features, but I miss the days of the supercharged version. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a super fun car to drive, but the downshift rev matching in the Cooper S with the manual transmission was not amazing. It was harsh and jerky. I also feel it lost a little bit of personality along its way to adulthood. I’ll forever love them, quirks and all. Honda Fit: MSRP range $14,495-$21,295 The Fit is on my list because I think it is just such a fabulous little car. The Magic Seats really are magic, but the new touchscreen is a huge deterrent. I strongly dislike it. I like buttons. I don’t mind if there are a few to complement the screen but I feel it takes my eyes off the road for too long, even if I’m familiar with the system.

The price of gas has dropped significantly in recent weeks. If you plan to buy a car this year will lower prices at the pump encourage you to buy a larger vehicle? Go to DrivewayCanada.ca to submit your answer. QUESTION

EDUCATION

Richard Jordan Garside age 75, died December 24, 2014 in Sacramento, California as a result of a stroke he suffered while on a golf holiday. Richard was born on September 9, 1939 in Edmonton, Alberta. He was raised in Edmonton and married his high school sweetheart Barbara Nelson on March 14, 1959. Richard later graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Together Richard and Barbara raised six children, Gordon (Tami), Richard (JeanAnn), David (Nicolette), Teuila Kenyon (Steve), Tricia Farraway (David) and James-deceased (Leslie). Richard and Barbara were blessed with 22 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Richard was a lifelong educator who took his family across the globe while working for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints educational system (CES). His teaching assignments began in 1966 when they moved their family of five to American Samoa where Richard taught school for 3 years. His subsequent CES assignments then took him to Albuquerque New Mexico, Winnipeg Manitoba, Kitchener Ontario, Raymond, Cardston and Calgary, Alberta. Richard and Barbara retired to Abbotsford, BC in 2001. They later moved to Chilliwack, BC in 2004. Richard served in many capacities in the LDS Church. Among his many callings, he served as a Bishop twice and was serving as the Patriarch of the Abbotsford Stake at the time of his death. Richard was a devoted teacher who practiced what he preached throughout his life. The thousands of students he taught were blessed by his wise, patient and humble approach to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Although he was an avid golfer, his family and his service to others were his primary mission. Richard was predeceased in death by his parents Gordon & Doris Garside, his son James and granddaughter Becky.
