Thankfully, due to improved Christmas light technology, amp meters and electrical upgrades, they are no longer a concern. “We just had to be very careful,” he says of those early days as Rocky Mountain House’s Christmas light king. in 1992, this year’s ode to all things merry clocks in at somewhere around 120,000 lights and more than 100 inflatables. But when Alfred and wife Cheryl pull the plug on Dec. 28, the lights will go dark for good. As much as his Christmas house is a labour of love, it is a labour. He estimates about 400 hours go into set-up beginning in August each year. And at 64, von Hollen admits it’s not getting any easier climbing those ladders and spending untold hours stringing, fastening, wiring and anchoring hundreds of ornaments, inflatables, light strings and other decorations.
