Overriding factor for gas prices is market

Pumptalk, the two largest factors that influence gas prices are crude oil costs and taxes. Following that is the cost of refining, distribution and marketing— which are all costs of operating, along with all marketing and operational expenses at the retail level. The website state that crude oil prices are affected by several factors including: weather, supply and demand, U.S. crude oil inventories, cost of production and refinery infrastructure, and global crises. Petro-Canada.ca said that the price of gasoline at the station is determined depending on the mode of operation. Some Petro-Canada branded facilities are independently owned and operated, while others are company owned and operated by a lessee or agent. Grand Forks Petro-Canada is a corporate owned store. “Prices for the independently owned and operated sites are set by the operator. Prices for the company owned and lessee or agent operated sites are set by

Petro-Canada,” the site said. “Although an independent retailer may be able to choose the price at their retail site(s), the need to remain competitive with the surrounding market means that ultimately the local market dictates the maximum price.” According to the federal government’s website for Natural Resources Canada, the average cost of regular gasoline in Canada (Dec. 2) was 112.3 down 2.1 from the week before and down 13.1 from last year. Diesel is down 5.7 from last year, while auto propane is down 5.1. Natural Resources Canada states that the overriding factor for determining retail gas prices is always the local market. “Every gas station wants consumers to buy gasoline from them,” the site said. “They will try to attract businesses by lowering their prices by a small amount. The other stations watch their competitors very closely and will match the lower price almost immediately.”
