Soroptimists of the Langleys held their 10th annual candlelight vigil on Tuesday to promote awareness of violence against women. The event drew about 20 people to McBurney plaza on a cool and rainy evening. Nov. 25 is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Langley RCMP have laid charges against two panhandlers, a man and a woman, believed to be responsible for robbing and stabbing a man after he didn’t give them ‘enough’ money at the Carvolth Bus Exchange on Nov. 15. Around 7 p.m. the two panhandlers approached the victim who was sitting in his parked vehicle and asked him for money. He did give them an amount of money, however the male suspect allegedly stabbed him in the arm wanting more, said police. As the two men struggled for his wallet, the female rummaged through the

vehicle for additional “loot,” said police. Once the male suspect removed the remaining money from the wallet, the pair ran westbound towards 200 Street. Police dogs established a short track to an abandoned home just west of the bus loop. Unfortunately, the suspects were not located at that time, said police. Through information sharing and a co-operative effort within the detachment, two people were suggested as possible suspects. The officers’ suspicions were confirmed when fingerprint impressions were developed from inside the vehicle. Continued Page 3

Two people from Chilliwack have been charged with trying to smuggle methamphetamine chemicals through the Aldergrove border crossing. The border was shut down for about an hour on Sunday night (Nov. 23) after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers made the discovery in a 1994 Pontiac

Grand Am. The car arrived at the border around 7 p.m. with a plastic tote tub sealed with plastic wrap containing an unknown liquid and other suspicious materials in the rear seat area. A U.S. customs officer became ill after breathing fumes from the materials. The crossing was shut down in both directions and the officer was rushed to

The injured officer was “successfully treated,” the Blaine U.S. Customs and Border Protection office reported. The border was re-opened after about

an hour. The two occupants of the car were arrested. On Monday, 41-year-old Calum James Buchanan and 24-year-old Lola Crystal McKay, both from Chilliwack, appeared before a Whatcom County judge on a charge of possession with intent to manufacture. Continued Page 5
