for School Board

Cold temperatures are forecast for Saturday but the race to become mayor of New Westminster promises to make it hot in the evening. Officially it’s a fourman race. But it could be a photo finish between incumbent Wayne Wright and challenger Jonathan Coté—though independent candidate James Crosty has certainly made an indelible mark on the campaign. It would appear Vladimir Krasnogor has too much ground to make up to be a factor. Wright is seeking his fifth term in the mayor’s chair. Coté and Wright generally have had similar visions for New Westminster during Coté’s three terms (nine years) as a city councillor. The most obvious difference is their age. Coté was just 26 when he was first elected to council in 2005. Wright is 71 and, if elected, would be 75 by the time the new four-year term ends.

OK folks, let’s get out to the polls Saturday is decision day in New Westminster, and there are a lot of decisions to be made. That’s if registered voters for the 2014 civic election make the big decision to go to the ballot box in the first place. Less than a quarter of registered voters did so three years ago with a turnout of 23.45 per cent. That was slightly lower than it was in 2008 when it was 23.86. Voting in municipal elections can be a daunting chore to many. Saturday, November 15th, 2014

But New Westminster is blessed with a lot of people that care about the city. And the candidates have certainly done their best to make the campaign trail lively and interesting. So there’s hope those turnout numbers will rise. Those that do choose to vote will make as many as 14 decisions selecting from a total of 38 candidates, including one candidate www.cartwrightnewwest.com

running for both council and school board. By the numbers, choosing a mayor is easy. Not so when it comes to council and the board of education. Voters only have to vote for one candidate for mayor and they have four to choose from. They include four-term incumbent Wayne Wright, three-term city councillor Jonathan Coté, and independents

James Crosty and Vladimir Krasnogor. City council is a different story. There are 21 candidates for just six seats. It’s a tough task for voters to sort through all of their policies, positions and personalities. It’s slightly less imposing when voting for school trustees. Thirteen candidates are chasing seven positions on the board of education. Voting locations will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com

On November 15, 2014, re-elect
