Driver flees head-on crash, leaves injured teenager behind Sports car had stolen plates Angela Cowan News Gazette staff
The driver of a sports car involved in a head-on crash Wednesday morning bolted from the scene and abandoned a teenaged girl in the car with serious injuries. According to eyewitness reports, a grey BMW travelling east on Sooke Road near Glen Lake Road in Langford crossed the centre line during the early morning commute and collided with a west-bound Econoline van. The driver of the sports car – found later to have stolen vehicle plates – fled the scene, leaving behind his 15-year-old passenger with serious injuries. The man was pursued by a number of witnesses, but eventually eluded them, said
West Shore RCMP Cpl. Kathy Rochlitz. “We are seeking a Caucasian male in his early 30s, between five feet five inches and five feet seven, with short, dirty blond hair, a poor complexion and teeth in noticeably poor condition,” Rochlitz told the Gazette as the paper went to press. The girl left behind in the BMW was taken to Victoria General Hospital and has been connected with her family, she added. The van driver suffered undetermined, but non lifethreatening injuries. Traffic on Sooke Road was rerouted for more than an hour Wednesday morning after the crash. Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have information about the missing driver can contact West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222TIPS (8477). acowan@goldstreamgazette.com

Goldstream Hatchery volunteer Bob Neill guides some of the more than 5,000 juvenile coho salmon into Osborne Pond along the 15th hole at Bear Mountain Golf Resort’s valley course. The annual event was witnessed by students in a Grade 1 class from Lakewood elementary.
Gathered on top of an embankment, a group of Grade 1 students look out onto Osborne Pond in the middle of Bear Mountain Golf Resort’s valley layout. The subject of their fascination is Goldstream Hatchery volunteer Bob Neill, up to his waist in water, who tightens his gloved hands around piping connected to a metal vat on the back of a pickup truck. After cheers from the young crowd, more than 5,000 young salmon begin streaming through the pipe into the lake. PleAse see: Volunteers, Page A5
