Public zoning hearing resumes

Council hears from proponents of four-home development on St. Mary Lake road C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

The zoning hearing regarding a potential fourhome housing development on a 23 acre lot on St. Mary Lake Road resumed on Monday evening at City Council. The hearing had been halted so that the City could properly notify surrounding residents with signage. At the of the hearing, Council heard from St. Mary Lake road residents in opposition to the development.

Monday’s hearing began with presentations from those who support it. Speaking first was Gord Jenkins from the Kimberley Golf Club, who outlined the reasons that the club wished to sell the parcel of land. Simply put, Jenkins said, the golf business has been in tough times for the past five years and the money from the sale was needed for replacement of aging equipment. “We’re cautiously optimistic, we’ve made a lot of changes, but revenues have stayed the same since 2009 and expenses have risen,” Jenkins said. The club needs cash, he said, and had no use for the land. See HEARING, page 3

On Thursday Nov 6, the Selkirk Senior Secondary band and choir performed at McKim Theatre. Sven Heyde, music director made particular mention of his search for an anvil in order to produce just the right sound in the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song. Emma Macleod took great pleasure in striking the anvil with a mallet to achieve the effect. Both the band and choir have over 30 students that practice alternate mornings at 7:30 a.m. Their dedication and commitment to the program was very evident during the show.

Kimberley RCMP Cpl. Chris Newel delivered the third quarter policing report to Council this week, and also took the opportunity to introduce Kimberley new detachment commander, Sgt. Robinson. Sgt. Robinson comes back to Kimberley — he lived in Marysville 19 years ago — after spending those 19 years serving in BC, Alberta and the Yukon.

“I am glad to be here,” he said. The 2014/15 Annual Performance Plan has four initiatives. Those are road safety, crime reduction, family violence and organized crime. On road safety, officers had 183 traffic contacts and 11 impaired drivers were taken off the road in the third quarter, Newel said. He also mentioned the dedicated service of Speedwatch volunteers, which he said were very effective. See POLICE, page 5
