NANOOSE BAY WELL CONTROVERSY

Residents have a say

Not exactly a cheery send-off for Nanoose Bay rep George Holme CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com

Emotions ran high at the regional district Tuesday night. Director George Holme, who has represented Nanoose Bay for 26 years but is not running for re-election, said he’s “split down the middle.” Ten people spoke to the board Tuesday about a well on Parker Road which will provide enough water for a Maz-Can development consisting of 16-20 homes and approximately 150 additional water connections the developer can sell. Most of the people who spoke to the board Tuesday said they are concerned the well might negatively affect the neighbouring area’s water supply. However, some expressed support for the project, saying it enables people to subdivide their properties and access the water connections they’ve been waiting nearly a decade to get. SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS

Bus situation sorted AUREN RUVINSKY

writer@pqbnews.com

There have been complaints, including some to The NEWS, about students being turned away from crowded school buses, but according to a report at Tuesday’s school board meeting, that has been resolved. “Transportation had its fair share of challenges earlier this year,” said District 69 Assistant Secretary Treasurer Ryan Hung, who said they have “worked very hard to address those challenges.” Complications from school reconfigurations over the summer and the late start of the year due to the strike meant there was a lot of uncertainty. Outgoing board chair Lynette Kershaw said: “We knew that transportation was going to be very challenging, coupled with the uncertainty from parents as to what school they would choose for their children to go to.” See 39% PAY INCREASE PASSES, page A6

HAPPY HALLOWEEN: The staff at Qualicum Beach’s Pharmasave started getting into the Halloween spirit early this year. It was witch day at the store Wednesday. Pharmasave, along with many other stores in the downtown village, will open their doors to costumed trick-or-treaters under the age of 12 on Friday for the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association’s Trick-orTreat event from 3:30-5 p.m. Participating stores will have an “Official Monster Merchant” poster in their window and orange and black balloons outside their doors.
