Last Monday, October 20 was the date when candidates were allowed to post election signs in Kimberley, and as Kimberley residents will have noted, signs have sprung up all over town. We have now entered the last three weeks of the election campaign and the last two weeks in particular have important dates to keep in mind. This will be the first municipal election in Kimberley to utilize automated vote counting machines. If you’d like to learn a little more about this technology, the City of Kimberley will be offering two demonstrations of how they work. The first will be next Monday, November 3 at 4 p.m. at City Hall. Another demonstration will occur on Monday, November 10 at 6 p.m. at City Hall. Also on November 3 will be the Candidates Forum for Councillors at 7 p.m. at McKim School. There will be a one hour meet and greet with candidates prior to the forum. Please keep in mind that there will be no opportunity to ask questions directly during the forum. If you have questions for the candidates, please email them to forum@kimberleychamber.com or you can submit your question just prior to the forum’s start. On Tuesday, November 4, it’s the Candidates
Forum for Mayors. The same timing and format applies as for the Council Forum. On Wednesday, November 5, it’s the first Advance Voting Day at Centennial Hall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The second Advance Voting Day is November 12. Anyone who is qualified to vote in the upcoming election can vote on advance voting day. November 12 (1 p.m.) is also the deadline for Mail Ballot Requests. Finally, on November 14, it’s the Special Voting Day for admitted patients or facility tenants only of East Kootenay Regional Hospital, Garden View Village, Kimberley Special Care Home, Lions Manor and Valleyview Lodge. Then it’s General Voting Day on Saturday, November 15 from 8 a.m .to 8 p.m. at Centennial Hall. New Mayor and Council will be sworn in and have their inaugural meeting on December 8. Running for Mayor in Kimberley are Doug Johnson, Don McCormick and Ron McRae. For Council it’s Brent Bush, Darren Close, Kent Goodwin, Albert Hoglund, Nigel Kitto, Darryl Oakley, Bev Middlebrook and Sandra Roberts. In Kimberley, school board trustees will all be acclaimed with Mac Campbell, Sandra Smail and Betty-Lou Barrett all returning to the Board. In Area E, the rural area surrounding Kimberley, Jane Walters is running unopposed as Area E Director for the RDEK.
