The brilliance of the colours is only one of the treats of hiking the trails in October. Add the cushioning of a thick layer of larch needles underfoot, a clear blue sky and the company of fellow hikers and you soon realize how fortunate we are to live in this part of the world. Twenty one members of the Elderberries, a local seniors hiking group, revelling in the joys of hiking the Lois Creek trails ventured out to the Tea Spot to check out the newly constructed shelter. Built by the College Of The Rockies student carpentry program under the direction of instructor Mark Knusgaard, the timber frame structure, devoid of screws and nails, is pieced together with dowels, wedges and mortise and tenon joints. It will be a welcome addition as a destination point at the far end of the Lois Creek trail system. Kimberley residents and visitors to town are recognizing the value of having so many trails within the City limits and beyond. Recent surveys indicate that of all the recreational facilities available in the community trails top the list in terms of usage. Many communities across North America are recognizing the bonanza that accrues from having trail systems. Ask any one of the Elderberries and they will attest to the health and social benefits of getting out and enjoying the variety of trails that Kimberley offers.

A busy weekend on the roads has led to two arrests in Kimberley and several violation tickets. The first incident occurred at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, October 23. RCMP Cpl. Chris Newel reports that Kimberley RCMP, Fire Department and BC Ambulance all attended a crash on Hwy 95A at Rotary Drive that was caused by an impaired driver. “The driver, a 24year old female from Cranbrook failed to stop before turning left onto highway 95A from Rotary Drive, near Black Bear Bridge, and

then entered the opposing lane hitting on oncoming vehicle head on,” Newel saId. “Once on scene police quickly noted the driver showed signs of alcohol consumption and entered into an impaired driving investigation. “The officer read the breath demand and the driver supplied a breath sample into the Roadside Screen Device which was a “Fail”. The subject was then taken back to the detachment where two more breath samples were obtained on a Breathalyzer; both those samples were over the legal limit.” Newel says that charges of Impaired Driving Causing Bodily Harm have been recommended.

Cranbrook RCMP seek McRae responds to McCormick’s witnesses to economic development strategy serious assault C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

Mayor Ron McRae is not impressed by candidate Don McCormick’s Economic Development Strategy, announced last week. “It is interesting to watch Councillor McCormick pretend to get excited about something that already exists,” McRae said. “Perhaps it’s why many call this the silly season. “With regards to

Mayor Ron McRae Councillor McCormick’s economic development strategy for Kimberley, it… well it simply isn’t.

Despite boasting that he would release an Economic Development Strategy for months, he hasn’t. A strategy is a plan. It consists of actions with specific goals and deliverables. Instead it would be better to call Councillor McCormick’s issuance “Some ideas Don would like to see discussed.” McRae says the discussion points are not new. “They’re the same points the City has been

planning and acting on for the last three years. Councillor McCormick states he would like to use the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan as a place to begin the discussions. Sadly, although he is the Chair of the Planning and Development Committee, he appears unaware that the City has been using the ICSP as the foundation and lens for discussion and decision making since it was developed. “Councillor McCor-

mick says he wants to talk about initiatives involving tourism, the SunMine, clean-tech, government services, value-added wood products, remote workers, post-secondary education, amenity migrants, import replacements and an eating disorder clinic. “I believe listening and discussing these points are vitally important. But so is action. ThatSee is why MCRAE, in the page last 3
