Local man recovering from grizzly attack Online fund set up to help has raised almost $20,000 TRE VOR CR AWLEY Townsman Staff

It will be a long road to recovery for Wilf Lloyd, a local Cranbrook man who is recovering from a grizzly attack while elk hunting near Fernie. With that in mind, an online fund has been set up to help support Wilf and his family, and donations have already reached $19,000. “They are just overwhelmed to the response,” said Darrell Orth, a family friend, “and how many people have gone out of their way to wish them well and to show their love and support for them.” Lloyd is currently recovering at a hospital in Calgary where he’s already undergone three surgeries, according to Orth. Lloyd, along with his son-in-law Skeet Podrasky, were elk hunting near Fernie on Sat-

urday, Oct. 11, when they took a shot at an elk late in the day. Based on the animal’s reaction, Lloyd was sure they had missed it, but just to be sure, they returned the next morning for a more exhaustive search. Upon returning to the area the next day, the two were unable to find any sign of a wounded elk. However, while hiking through the bush, they startled an adult male grizzly bear, which charged and attacked Lloyd within seconds. Podrasky emptied his magazine into the grizzly, which temporarily ceased the attack, and the bear made a slight retreat into the surrounding bushes. Because his gun was out of bullets, he was able to pick up Lloyd’s rifle as the animal returned, and shot the charging grizzly to end the attack. In the chaos of the moment, one of the rounds inadvertently struck Lloyd in the thigh. See Page 4
