Decoding the Sedins
Victoria duo research Sedin twin’s successful use of ‘servant leadership’ Travis Paterson Victoria News
Before the Sedin brothers were great in the NHL, they were great in Sweden. But the transition to North America during their rookie National Hockey League season of 2000-01, and a few years following nearly derailed them. An ongoing study by Carolyn Crippen, a professor of education at the University of Victoria, and doctoral student David Nagel, explains how the Sedins – Daniel and Henrik – are glowing examples of the servant leadership philosophy. Using traits exhibited by successful servant leaders, the Sedins prevailed as honourable, respectful athletes in a violent and intimidating arena. Crippen and Nagel captured the research in two international journal articles about serHenrik Sedin vant leadership. “Their decision to stay was a crucial stage in their development,” said Crippen, a Rockland resident who never watched hockey until she stumbled on the Sedins in 2011. The Sedins’ bush red beards of the time stood out. “They were called soft, they were called sisters, they were called lots of things, but they decided to stay in Vancouver and it was a key moment of their life,” Crippen said. The study includes site visits to games, practices and interviews with the brothers at Rogers Arena, with television and print media members Dan Murphy and Ian MacIntyre (who’ve watched the Sedins since Day 1), and countless hours of documenting the brothers behaviour on the ice. If it’s game night, Crippen has the TV or radio on, scribbling constant observations. PlEASE SEE: Sedins learned their values, Page A4
