In its seven decades, the Victoria Camera Club has seen changes its members never would have never imagined.

But as the shutterbugs prepare for the club’s anniversary show, On Reflection, at the Arts Centre at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre next week, the shift to digital photography is just one of the many milestones that makes up a rich visual catalogue of images.

“Nature photography is still our strongest category, though the creative category is next,” says vice president Richard James, referencing the club’s monthly photo competitions held at Norway House on Hillside Avenue.

Case in point, James has entered his own photo of a majestic bison displacing water as it tromps through the Yellowstone River (see photo on Page A15).

Digital photography as led to a more accessible world for would-be photographers and opened the door to new photography categories, especially in the creative realm where raw photos are built, layer by layer, into illustrated art.

James, who was initially a member between 1980 and 1985, rejoined the camera club in 2005 after it accepted digitalization as a legitimate form of photography.

“Myself and many others had already switched over (to digital), but there are a few dark rooms still in town,” he said.

“There’s interest in the lost art of the dark room, too, with the next generation who are growing up without film. And there’s at least a couple of deep freezers full of slides around town.”

The VCC includes members from all walks of life, such as Ted Grant, the internationally renowned Canadian photojournalist and photographer.

Grant is writing a foreword for the club’s soon-to-be-published book commemorating its 70-year life.

But it also takes the work of volunteers such as current president Lloyd Houghton,

who relocated to the Island from New Zealand in 2012.

“Couldn’t resist the offer,” jokes Houghton. “Coming from out of town, it was actually one of the first things I did before I came here, to look up the club and be around likeminded people as soon as I arrived.”

The lifetime photographer started with a Practica 1000 as a teenager.

“This club has a great history and it’s been well respected. When you look back over time you see the technology change in a way we never would have dreamed,” Houghton said.

Conference targets family poverty Child and family poverty is an issue community members in Victoria hope to start finding solutions to this Thursday and Friday.

Christ Church Cathedral is hosting a conference, From Charity to Social Justice: Addressing Child and Family Poverty. The conference will discuss the extent of the problem, as well as ways in which to address poverty.

On Thursday at 7 p.m., John Greshner, B.C.’s deputy representative for children and youth, will speak at the Cathedral.

On Friday, the conference runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. In the morning, Adrienne Montani, provincial coordinator of First Call: BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition and representatives from various local service providers will talk about the extent and nature of child and family poverty.

In the afternoon, Scott Clark, executive direc-

tor of Aboriginal Life in Vancouver Enhancement Society will talk about some of the ways his community is addressing poverty. Admission to the conference is free, and lunch will be provided on Friday.

Bus tickets and daycare subsidies are available to those that need them.

Saanichton Dragonslayer wins Island Classic Saturday’s Island Classic Scale Model Contest drew 228 scale model entries by 27 modellers, including the winner of The Most Promising Young Modeller, Gabriel Shaw from Saanichton.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone quickly ruled out a demand from municipal politicians to unwind recent B.C. Ferries fare hikes and service cuts.

Speaking outside the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention last week, after delegates unanimously endorsed the resolution, Stone said affordability is the No. 1 issue and fares cannot continue to rise at four per cent or more a year.

But he said he won’t overrule the independent ferry commissioner and force a reduction in fares.

“That’s not going to happen,” Stone said, adding he also firmly rejected a call from coastal communities to raise taxes to increase ferry subsidies.

Instead, he said, fare restraint must come from innovation and efficiencies that will deliver savings that can be reinvested in the ferry system.

Stone wants local support for

potentially controversial service changes to cut costs – including a bridge to Gabriola Island and a cable ferry planned to Denman Island that would save $2 million a year.

The province has also announced plans to retrofit two Spirit-class ferries to run on liquefied natural gas and save an estimated $9 million a year on fuel. Stone met coastal community representatives on Sept. 24 on the ferry issues and promised a follow-up meeting in November to discuss avenues for savings.

Coastal area politicians intend to keep pressing the province to study the economic impact of rapidly rising ferry fares, after releasing a UBCMcommissioned study that points to significant economic losses to the province.

Local government representatives are calling on the province to give bylaw officers authority to break into vehicles and rescue animals in distress.

Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar was supported unanimously when he called for the new authority at last week’s Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Whistler.

Milobar told local government representatives that when municipal staff find an animal trapped in an overheated car, they must contact police or

SPCA constables, who have authority to enter a vehicle or other property to rescue animals.

Being on the scene but unable to take action is a difficult situation for municipal staff, Milobar said.

The outgoing president of the UBCM, Columbia-Shuswap Regional District director Rhona Martin, cautioned that such a power could embroil local governments in “good neighbour-bad neighbour” disputes, where one neighbour makes complaints and municipal staff enter a barn or other building to respond. But no one opposed

the resolution.

Dogs left in locked vehicles are a problem every summer, and received extra public attention this year when six dogs from Delta died in a dog walker’s truck in Richmond in May. Dog walker Emma Paulson was prosecuted after the bodies of the dogs were found in a ditch in Abbotsford. Paulson initially said the dogs had been stolen from the back of her truck.

Local issues: lets’s get talking In just over six weeks, about one fifth of eligible voters will head to the polls to elect their respective municipal councils for the next four years.

Abysmal turnout aside, the outcome will determine a lot. Local councils have a lot of authority that affect the everyday lives of citizens. Those aggravating roadworks affecting your morning commute? They were discussed three years ago at municipal hall and spurred on by a federal government infrastructure grant. The mega-project bulldozing your neighbours’ houses? You had your chance to raise a stink and oppose it last year, but you decided not to waste a sunny summer evening at a public hearing.

Saanich’s eight incumbent councillors and Mayor Frank Leonard will soon begin pushing hard on the campaign trail. They’ll be challenged by new faces who will equally need to justify why they deserve your vote and trust.

As the campaign gets underway, the News wants to hear from Saanichites about the issues that matter to you. Don’t slip into autopilot the next time you see a councillor handing out pamphlets. Instead, challenge them on the region’s botched secondary sewage treatment project, amalgamation, property tax rates, municipal spending, local climate change initiatives or anything else that makes you passionate about your hometown.

The editorial staff at the News pride ourselves on highlighting the many issues that bubble up at municipal hall by informing you of their potential consequences. We’re here to hold public representatives to account for their decisions.

This was 24 hours after the teachers’ union took that position.

So there’s the big question to be considered by voters as local elections draw near. Which candidates are looking out for your interests, and which ones are working on behalf of CUPE? There’s another troubling trend in manipulation of local government that was more evident than ever at the 2014 UBCM convention. I’ll discuss that in a future column.

Fletcher fails to do his homework Re: Report card time for local politicians (B.C. Views, Sept. 24).

My track record advocating for cost-effective delivery of municipal services, fiscal discipline in major infrastructure projects, open government and safety in our communities is clear.

Voters and municipal officials from across the political spectrum value this contribution at Victoria City Hall, which has saved taxpayers money, improved public services and helped to make the municipality more responsive to resident concerns.

Tom Fletcher chooses to ignore this track record in his column, perhaps because he has not attended

a single meeting of Victoria city council or the Capital Regional District since I was elected to represent the people of Victoria three years ago.

Alongside my work on municipal issues, the people of Victoria have asked me to stand up and advocate to the provincial and federal governments on issues they care about that impact our community.

This includes the threat of oil tankers and pipelines on coastal communities and interior waterways; attacks on our postal system and education system and the workers who deliver those services; and the rights of First Nations on issues including sacred burial sites

and land development.

The Union of B.C. Municipalities and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities are legitimate channels for dialogue between local government and the provincial and federal governments.

At this year’s UBCM convention in Whistler, I spoke directly with Premier Christy Clark and her ministers on matters affecting the City of Victoria and the Capital Region, helping to build relationships and find solutions that will benefit the community that I am elected to represent.

Fletcher is entitled to his views, as I told him during a conversation at the UBCM convention last week. But I

think we would all benefit if he did his homework first.

Vikes XC women tops at Stanford

Kendra Pomfret led all UVic Vikes cross country runners with a 40th overall finish at the 41st annual Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. on Saturday, Sept. 27.

Pomfret ran most of the six-kilometre route in 22:05 with teammate Shauna McInnis just nine seconds back. It paced the women to first overall amongst the 21 non Div. 1 NCAA schools at the meet. Jackson Bocksnick (24:43) led the Vikes men wtih a 52nd overall finish, as the Vikes men were fifth amongst non Div. 1 NCAA teams.

Residents of the Capital Region are invited to participate in a FREE workshop on gardening with drought-resistant native plants. Instruction on native plant identification, their benefits and how to use them will be included. An overview of CRD Water Conservation programs will be provided and participants will be given a tour of a native plant garden. These informative workshops will be held at Swan Lake Nature House, located at 3873 Swan Lake Road in Victoria.

UVic Vike Matt Noseworthy (16-19) outpaced everyone to win the eighth and final event of The Q Victoria Run Series, an eight-kilometre cross country race at Beaver Lake Park on Saturday (Sept. 27).

Noseworthy, who dit not travel to the Stanford Invitational, finished the spike-friendly course in 28 minutes and 51 seconds. Fellow Vike Derrick Evans (16-19) was second (29:44).

Oak Bay High grad Talen Rimmer (16-19) was fourth at 30:49. Lucy Smith ran an even 32 minutes as the top woman (40-49) in the 8-km, averaging exactly four minutes per km.

The race also featured a 4-km route that drew a mix of athletes, won by Campbell River’s Aiden Longcroft-Harris (16-19) in 15:48.

Josh Smith always had a dream to walk in the Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon 8K road race, but fear always got in the way.

Smith had tried at least twice to complete the race only to be beset with fear and anxiety.

But last year with the help of Lifetime Networks support workers Alex and Steph Saunders, he accomplished his goal with a smile on his face.

Saanich-based Lifetime Networks is a support group for people with disabilities and is one of 22 charities that participates in the marathon every year. Last year, Lifetime Networks raised more than $20,000 from the marathon through active participation

The Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon, which features four races, is coming up in October, but the annual pledge program has already started. The idea is to raise awareness and money for the participating charities by encouraging individuals to either walk or run for a charity while collecting pledges.

Individuals can sign up at runvictoria.com to become part of an organization’s team.

Over the last nine years, the program has raised more than $1 million for Victoria charities.

Carlene Thompson, finance and fund development director for Lifetime Networks, said the partnership with the marathon and charity is a win-win scenario.

10th Birthday to remember Hello, my son Dax (the boy on the left) is a fishing fanatic. For his 10th birthday, my wife and I bought him a full-day Sturgeon charter on the Fraser river, as we figured the ‘double digit’ birthday needed to be very special.

He brought along his good friend Niko, and we enjoyed a fantastic day of Sturgeon fishing, catching 7 Sturgeon in total, and losing 3 more. This was the biggest Sturgeon, measuring in at exactly 8 feet in length, and approximately 80 years old! In scanning this fish, our guide discovered that it had never been tagged, so we were also lucky enough to be involved in the process of inserting a tag into this fish before it was released. As our guide told us, we were fortunate to experience an “epic” day of Sturgeon fishing that would be hard to beat!
