All-candidate forums kick off municipal elections race

HOPES HIGH HEADING INTO HOME OPENER

BY TIMES STAFF The candidates haven’t all stepped forward yet but plans are already in the works for a series of forums leading up to the Nov. 15 municipal elections. The Trail and District Chamber of Commerce has initiated plans for candidate forums in Montrose, Trail, Warfield and Fruitvale. Norm Casler, executive director of the chamber, said although the forum dates and locations have been set, forums in each community will also depend on who enters the field. If one community has no candidates vying for positions and the incumbents are acclaimed, then no forum will be held. So far the dates for the forums are set for Oct. 28 at the Montrose Hall, Oct. 30 at the Cominco Gym in Trail, Nov. 3 at the Warfield Community Hall and Nov. 4 at the Fruitvale Memorial Hall. All forums will run from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Casler is recruiting a media panel to offer up questions but the format will also encourage questions from the public through an open mic segment. Each candidate will be offered the opportunity for opening and closing remarks. See NOMINATION, Page 2

Plenty of bear sightings in region BY LIZ BEVAN Times Staff

Summer is officially over and bears are on the prowl for as much food as they can find before the snow starts to fall. Sharon Wieder with WildSafe BC says she has received plenty of calls about bear sightings in the area. “In the last three weeks, I have had about four to five calls a day in the Rossland and Trail area about bears,” she said. So far, none of the bear sightings in the Rossland and Trail area have resulted in dangerous confrontations or interactions, as far as Weider knows and no bears have had to be destroyed. The Trail Times received a report from a reader describing the same bear returning three nights in a row to their Annable home before knocking down the fence. Every season brings high hopes and the Trail Smoke Eaters are reaching for new heights this year. After winning its two first games of the season at the Bauer-BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack last weekend, the team steps on to the Cominco Arena ice for the first time tonight in a tilt against the Penticton Vees. It’s the first of back-to-back home games this weekend. Saturday night the Salmon Arm Silverbacks come to town. See story on Page 13.
