Tentative settlement reached in teachers strike

It was no treble, but all about that bass for a dozen kids from the Library at Sanctuary program Tuesday morning. Local musician Michael Gifford showcased his homemade bass instrument, constructed from a wash tub and unique tree branch bow. The morning activities will continue to run until school is back in session, which could be early next week.

The schools are ready to go. Now, the teachers in School District 20 (SD20) could be ready to go. B.C.’s striking teachers are expected to vote Thursday on a tentative settlement that was reached with the provincial government early Tuesday morning. Premier Christy Clark said if the vote passes, schools will be up and running again as early as Monday. She thanked parents for their patience, saying a negotiated settlement was the only way to improve a relationship that has been dysfunctional for 30 years. “We’ll have five years to talk about the things that really matter, and that’s children in classrooms,” Clark said in Vancouver Tuesday. Negotiators on both sides have agreed to keep details under wraps, but Darrel Ganzert, SD20 board chair, says the news is good, and he can’t see either party turning down the bargaining committee’s recommendations. “Typically, the way things work is if the bargaining committee recommends acceptance to the membership, then it’s a done deal.” he explained. “At this point, I can’t see either membership turning it down, but it could happen.” After teachers vote to ratify the agreement Thursday, Ganzert said the next step is for the province’s 60 school district boards of education to ratify contract terms by Friday. Videos and photos were posted on Facebook or Twitter, then others were challenged to do the same within 24 hours, and asked to match or exceed their donation to the ALS cause. The spontaneous media campaign has raised over $13 million across Canada in just a few months, but just how much awareness was raised about the people living with and dying from the incurable disease?

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge took social media by storm this summer. But in the midst of the viral sensation, was the message behind the movement being left out in the cold? In what began as a one-time dare to raise money and awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), people of all ages from every corner of North America, were dumping ice

lovebirds went. But around 2010, Joyce was beginning to lose her balance and trip, for no apparent reason. Within months, she was diagnosed with Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS) which is a slower progressive form of ALS – otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. She can no longer lift her head to smile at her visitors, or open her arms up and hug her husband of 57 years. See FAMILY, Page 2

Joyce Manwell. Joyce was a spirited 74-year old just four years ago, living in an apartment on Trail’s Laburnum Drive with her husband Bob Manwell, a retired engineer from Teck Trail Operations. She was a well known volunteer in the community and always had a smile on her face. Joyce was fit, loved the outdoors, and kept a suitcase at arms length so when a deal came up for her and Bob to fly off to an exotic locale, away the two
