$800 fine, $240 victim surcharge and $1,000 restitution for deer trap tampering TRE VOR CR AWLEY

One of two people involved with the destruction of deer traps in Cranbrook in February plead guilty last week in Cranbrook provincial court last week. Lucky Sikora, who was charged with mischief to property over $5,000 after the incident, plead guilty and was fined $800 and must pay a victim surcharge of $240 and restitution of $1,000, as ordered by Justice Ron Webb. The fines must be paid within one year. Another charge of disguising face with intent to commit offence was stayed. Devin Kazakoff, who was also charged with the same offences in connection to the destruction of the same deer traps, will appear in Cranbrook provincial court on Oct. 21st. In February, 10 deer traps were stolen from a government building in Cranbrook. Six were destroyed by fire in the bush, while three were still missing. One was eventually located. The city of Kimberley had to cancel their planned deer cull after the traps were destroyed, as the plan relied on their use to capture the urban deer.

Bridge repair on track Black Bear bridge should be open by month’s end C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

Black Bear bridge should be re-opened by the end of the month, says Mayor Ron McRae. The bridge has been closed since mid-July as it undergoes an $800,000 rehab. “It is essentially a complete replacement,” said McRae. McRae says right now crews are waiting for the concrete to cure. “That takes six to

seven days,” he said. “At the mid-point of this week, they should be able to start to backfill and then proceed to do the prep work for the final paving. We are also waiting for the steel beams for the railings to arrive.” In addition to Black Bear bridge being out of commission this summer, the city permanently closed the Mark Street bridge near B&B glass in August.

Truck burns down on street ARNE PE TRYSHEN Townsman Staff

A semi truck burned on 4th Avenue South overnight Thursday, Sept. 11. Fire crews were on the scene to put out the blaze during the early morning hours. The call came in at 1:55 a.m. and by 3:56 a.m. the blaze was extinguished. Gord Yee, acting captain for the Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services, said fire crews arrived to a fully involved vehicle fire. He said there was no danger to nearby people or structures. “It was just parked on the side of the road, a residential street, so there was no exposures

as far as dangers.” He said crews treat vehicle fires much the same as structural fires. “We just make sure that there are no exposures or hazards to anybody around, like power lines, or fuels or anything like that,” he said. “We just try to control it as soon as possible before it spreads to anything else.” Six firefighters reARNE PETRYSHEN PHOTO sponded to the call.
