KIMBERLEY RCMP

Second quarter policing report C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

Cpl. Chris Newel of the Kimberley RCMP delivered the second quarter policing report to Council this past Monday evening, a little late because of the schedule of summer Council meetings. Newel, who has been acting NCO in charge at the Kimberley Detachment since the retirement of Sgt. Laurie Jalbert last summer, informed Council that a new Sgt. was now in place at the detachment. Sgt. Darrell Robinson will be formally introduced to Council at a future meeting. The Detachment has identified four issues in the Annual Performance Plan, those being road safety, crime reduction, family violence and organized crime. Under road safety are enforcement, education and awareness, along with proactive initiatives such as road checks. Newel reported that over the three months of the second quarter, officers had 179 traffic contacts and 11 impaired drivers were taken off the road. Local speed watch groups were also out on ten separate occasion, each of which would clock about 2000 vehicles.

Kimberley’s Terry Fox Run this Sunday

Annual run leaves Centennial Hall at noon Sunday C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

The weather forecast promises that we will be under blue September skies by Sunday, September 14, which means great conditions to walk, run or bike the Terry Fox Run in Kimberley. As always, the Terry Fox Run begins at Centennial Hall. You can register beginning at 11 a.m. and the run begins at noon. Kim-

berley’s Terry Fox Run is once again being organized by Karen Vold Oakley, assisted by the entire Vold Oakley family. You are invited to choose from three course distances, one, five or ten kilometres on a route from Centennial Hall to the skate park and back (or any portion of that route). “One of the greatest joys of organizing the Terry Fox run happens after all the participants have finished,” Vold Oakley said. “Community organizers are asked to call into race headquarters in Vancouver. When we make the call we are put on speaker phone and our name and community is an-

nounced to the room full of volunteers. We then announce our total and the room erupts with cheers and clapping for Kimberley. Always an emotional moment. Last year I had just finished the call and was about to hang up when I was asked to hold on someone wanted to talk to me. “Hello, Karen” a man came on the line “It’s Rolly Fox (Terry’s father), I just wanted to thank-you for organizing the Kimberley run every year. It’s communities like yours that keep Terry’s Marathon of Hope alive.” “Rolly” I answered “It’s an honor, your son is my hero.”
