With no settlement between the teachers and the government, parents had to find other options for their children. With renowned negotiator Vince Ready on hand and both sides meeting for long hours, it was hoped a settlement could be made before school started, unfortunately the sides were too far apart. Teacher’s began limited job action last March before escalating to a full-blown walk-out in June, just before final exams. Key issues in the contract dispute are wages, class composition and class size. In a press release on Aug. 30, Peter Fassbender, minister of education, stated, “Today veteran labour mediator Vince Ready “When your child is born and you imagine all their firsts – this is not what I imagined for my child’s first day of Kinderdetermined that the parties are garten,” said Malayna Gross – Grade 2-3 teacher at Midway Elementary School and parent whose son was scheduled too far apart for mediation at to start school on Tuesday. court and now you are trying to negotiate a clause to get yourself off the hook. What teacher in their right mind would agree to something like that?” Dunnet urges Larson to take action and make her voice heard in the Liberal party. “Strong schools make for a strong society,” he wrote. “Your voice is needed. You must take action. My children deserve to be in school. All children school have that right. You are standing in there way. The time for action is now.” In an interview with the Gazette, Dunnet said he believes in unions and their ability to make people’s lives better. “For me, I feel this is a bigger fight than just what we’re fighting now,” he said. “I think society is moving in a certain direction, I feel we’re trying to hold it back. As least that’s how I see it. Even though I’m frustrated because I’m not working and I’m not getting paid—when I teach I want to give 100 per cent and give it everything—being in that situation where I can’t I feel I’m hurting myself in this action but I feel this is the only action I have to take. I wish there was some other action to take.” Dunnet said he realizes how the strike is making it tough on kids and parents, but he believes the alternate is far worse. “It’s either take this action which seems to hurt everyone especially ourselves, or take no action and let the situation just degrade and degrade,” he said. “I want to be in school and teaching, but I don’t think we can keep giving into this agenda. I feel like we’re holding the line. If they manage to break us and take the schools down with us then I don’t know where it ends.” Dunnet said being a math teacher he is always budget conscious. He and his wife have been able to save money and are making out okay.

“We weren’t able to do renovations in our house this year,” he said. “We went to (swimming) provincials in Kamloops and camped instead of stayed in a hotel. We haven’t had to make any tough decisions yet. If we were out in November we’ll have to make tough decisions.” Dunnet said he does know of some teachers who are struggling with having not been paid during the strike. “I think there’s people at all levels,” he said. “Some have spouses that work. Those that have both spouses teach—it’s tough.” Dunnet added that support has been mostly positive from the community although he feels there is a portion of the public that doesn’t agree. “For every 20 honks and smiles, we get maybe one person saying we should get back to work,” he said. “Most people I talk to they love their kid’s teacher. They’re really happy with what their kids are doing in school but when you get to this broad idea of teachers, suddenly we’re a bad group of people who want too much and are lazy. There’s a disconnect between someone’s teacher and teachers as a whole.”

An abuse of power In 2012 a special political-activity audit group was created to audit groups who hold charity status. While the government claims it pays no attention to pro-government or anti-government political leanings when it chooses which charities to audit for their political activities, an analysis cited last month by the Canadian Press strongly suggests there is a bias in the selection of which charities get audited because the first wave of agency audits were largely opponents of the Harper government’s energy and pipeline policies. The head of the CRA charities directorate, Cathy Hawara, admits the agency considers any formal complaints from citizens, lobby groups, MPs or even cabinet ministers. According to CP such external complaints were taken seriously enough to have generated some 30 “leads” for further investigation, though the CRA will not provide details. “CRA’s initial focus on environmental groups closely follows inflammatory statements by Conservative cabinet ministers shortly before and after the 2012 federal budget, which announced the new audits,” said the CP article, which goes on to quote Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver saying, “Environmental groups had a “radical agenda,” and statements by Environment Minister Peter Kent that the groups were used to “launder offshore funds.” EthicalOil.org, an energy-sector promoter founded by a Conservative political aide, also formally complained about three of the five environmental groups caught in the first wave of audits — suggesting their letters turned into CRA “leads.” CRA is watching for any group that uses more than 10 per cent of its resources on political activities, or that engages in any kind of partisan activity, such as endorsing a candidate, which is forbidden. But it seems to be watching one side of the political spectrum more than the other. If it is, it is an abuse of power.

Rock Creek to be featured

Ready for school

The Rock Creek Market is an opportunity each Saturday to reconnect with friends over a cup of coffee and share news. The big news this week is that Rock Creek will be featured on Global TV’s Small Town BC feature this weekend. Those with pictures they’d like to share can email them to weekendnews@globaltv.com Vic Boychuk heads up the Rock Creek Market that has been happening through the season since it began in 2008. He says this year is probably the best so far for the market, with a variety of unique vendors offering their goods. The market held a Customer Appreciation Day recently and many shoppers were delighted to be gifted some goodies made by vendors.

Incoming Grade 8 students were given a tour of Boundary Central Senior Secondary last Thursday evening. Students from the senior classes, such as Madison Harpur shown here, helped give them a tour. Bo Macfarlane, taking over as principal at BCSS, made himself available to meet with parents in the Commons while the students were taking the tour.

RDKB oks woodstove program CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

“Selfless acts by community members like John help keep the library going,” said Midway library director Nicole Ferrier when handed a cash donation by John Coburn.

Pitching in for the library When John and Myrna Coburn moved Coburn’s Bookworld Ltd. from Burnaby to Midway in 2003 they came with more books than the Midway Library had in its’ collection. The online bookselling business operated for a number of years out of the Glenburn Manor Coffee House. But John has now closed the online book business and had to find a way to get rid of the remaining stock. So each Monday he reloads a large table of books that sits on the patio outside the Bored Room Bistro with another couple of hundred books, which people are encouraged to browse. If they find a title they’d like to take home they need only make a donation. All the money do-

nated goes to the Midway Public Library. He started the table in June and was able to hand over an envelope with $400 to library director Nicole Ferrier on Tuesday morning. Each week Coburn goes through the books that weren’t taken and any that explain Canada are given to Earl Lehmann and his Help for Simara Project in the Philippines. All large print books go to Boundary Lodge in Grand Forks. “It is really amazing and appreciated,” said Ferrier in receiving the donation. “It is so kind of you to do that. Thank you very much.” The book table will remain on the patio at the Bored Room Bistro into October.

Bargain books

Greenwood Public Library held a daylong sidewalk book sale in front of McArthur Centre on Saturday. The event is always popular with both locals and those driving through on the highway because there are hundreds of books, audio and videotapes available.

The RDKB board of directors received a report from Theresa Lenardon, RDKB manager of administration, regarding the 2014-15 Provincial Wood Stove Program. In her report, Lenardon stated that the program is designed to encourage British Columbians to change their older smoky wood stoves for low-emission appliances including new CSA/EPA certified clean-burning wood stoves. Communities benefit from better air quality and individuals benefit from increased efficiency saving money and reducing pollution. The program has been in place since 2008 and has gone really well. “We’re really supportive of the wood stove program,” said Grace McGregor, RDKB board chair. “It has been very successful. Most of the electoral area directors provide a bit more money to go with that incentive from our grant-inaid to encourage people to trade in their stoves which had emissions.” Lenardon recommended that the board approve participation in the 2014-15 Wood Stove Exchange Program and that it be called “The RDKB Wood Stove Exchange Program.” The RDKB would act as the administrator of the program and distribute the grant funds. The program will be

Suicide prevention day activities planned

Ed. Note: In the Time page two Community Calendar in last week’s edition the community barbeque was listed for Sunday, September 7 – the event is in fact scheduled for Wednesday, September 10.

The Boundary World Suicide Prevention Day Planning Committee is hosting a community barbeque with kite flying from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10 at James G. McMynn Park in Midway. The kite is the national symbol for World Suicide Prevention Day, which is held on September 10 every year and is an internationally recognized day for suicide prevention and education. In a recent letter to the Village of Midway the com-

mittee explained the goal of the event is to renew the commitment to preventing suicide in local communities, support those touched by suicide, and to remember the lives of those who died by suicide. RCMP Victim Services Program Manager Cathy Riddle said this would be the first year the event will be held in the Boundary Area. Organizers are structuring this event on a very successful format held in Castlegar in 2013 - kite flying. “The connection we have through the string to the kite in the sky represents our connection to the things we strive to stay connected to: hope, community, those we have lost, and those who struggle with thoughts of suicide,” Riddle wrote in her letter to council.

“The kite also reminds us of the importance of staying connected to ourselves to keep our feet on the ground and to sometimes put our heads in the clouds and dream, to be aware of ourselves, to feel our own importance and power, to care for and nurture ourselves, to have fun and play.” The community barbeque, awareness session and kite flying is a collaboration between Interior Health, Adult Mental Health, Ministry for Children and Family Development, Child and Youth Mental Health, Boundary Hospice, Boundary Family and Individual Services Society, School District 51 (Boundary) and RCMP Victim Services.

Riding out of the shadows for mental health Who would have thought conversations about mental health challenges and triumphs would create such a stir in our communities this past spring? Maybe it had something to do with bringing a common experience out of the shadows. About one in five Canadians experiences a mental Contributed by Jenny Green, illness or substance use community health facilitator for problem in their lifetime. Interior Health. It may also have had something do with an Olympic champion leading the pack – Clara Hughes. Clara’s Big Ride for Bell Let’s Talk, a national bicycle tour, conveyed a clear message: talking is the best way to start breaking down the barriers associated with mental illness. Many people living with a mental illness say the stigma is worse than the symptoms they feel. Experiences of stigma (negative labels) and discrimination (the behaviour that results from these negative labels) are the greatest barriers to living a fulfilling life. Stigma and discrimination are barriers that prevent many from seeking help. Stigma often comes from fear and misunderstanding of people with mental health illness. There are many ways you can help reduce stigma and discrimination in your commu-

nity. • Educate yourself and others about mental illness. www.heretohelp.bc.ca is a good place to start for information. Mental Health First Aid courses are also available in many communities and can improve your mental health literacy, skills and knowledge to help people in your community. • Meet and talk with people who can share their experiences of mental illness and recovery. • Be aware of your attitudes, behaviour and language. See a person beyond their mental illness, for who they are, their dreams and unique qualities. • Focus on the positive. Mental health is only one part of who people are. Let’s recognize positive successes in people’s lives. • Be inclusive of everyone. People with mental health and substance use problems have a right to an equal part in society. This includes access to jobs, housing, recreation and other services.

Finally, on the theme of stigma reduction and promoting community discussion, September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. This year, the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) and the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) have partnered to promote this year’s theme “Connecting Canada.” The theme is intended to highlight that being connected with oneself, with others, and a community is critical to ones sense of hopefulness and wellbeing. Be on the lookout for World Suicide Prevention Day events happening in your community. And remember, help is available. Poultry in Motion coming to fair

With farms off limits to visitors due to biosecurity protocols, the BC Chicken Growers’ Association, in partnership with the BC Broiler Hatching Egg Producers’ Association, has developed Poultry in Motion™, a mobile mini barn, in an effort to increase public awareness and educate consumers. This fully equipped mini barn has been featured at fairs, schools and agriculture events around the province and it will be at the Rock

Creek Fair this year. There will be a Fall Fair Work Bee on both Saturday and Sunday of this weekend – September 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided but please bring cookies or squares to share. Help needed for cleaning and set up. There are tasks for every capability available. Call Jodi Klein at Fair office 250-446-2465 if you wish to volunteer at another time.

Cemetery gates receive strong reviews It was a year ago on August 29 that a heavy windstorm roared through the Boundary blowing down trees. The fence in front of the Greenwood Cemetery was destroyed and some grave markers displaced when pine trees along the south fence line were blown over. A new fence has now gone in and is receiving positive reviews from residents on Mayor Nipper Kettle’s Facebook page. “Wow, looks fantastic!” “Looks very nice. Good work.” “Looks awesome.” “Wow, spectacular.” “Big improvement!” “Very classy. Nice job, Greenwood!” “It is a huge improvement and grass cutting etc. should not be a problem its above the ground in

most places,” wrote Kettle. Former city councillor and heritage buff Christopher Stevenson wrote, “Nice heritage look to it - big improvement........I like it. Should last a long, long time.” “The main gate is what we have for now,” wrote Kettle. “But we will be addressing the overhead sign which will say Greenwood Cemetery over the winter and I hope we can get done in the spring.”

Cops for Kids returning to Boundary Riders and support workers from RCMP and supporting enforcement agencies within the Southeast district will be at Deadwood Junction in Greenwood on this year’s Cops for Kids Ride on Saturday, September 6 at about 3 p.m. The 2013 Ride will take the team across the Southeastern corner of British Columbia to raise awareness and essential funds for children in medical, physical or traumatic crisis. Over the ten-day journey, Cops for Kids riders will cycle into 18 different communities across southeastern B.C., facing some challenging terrain and possible inclement weather conditions along the way. The route includes ascent and descent of two mountain passes: the Anarchist and the Blueberry-Paulson, which involve significant elevation changes.

These encounters will remind each rider of the challenges that some children, the ambassadors, face on a daily basis and it will serve to keep them focused to complete their journey to help better the lives of these children. In addition, many of these little ambassadors will meet the riders in their hometowns. Cops for Kids are grateful for the generosity shown by all of our communities. “Our riders join us from across the region, and they’ve each raised a minimum of $2,000 through various fundraising efforts in their own community. Each year Deadwood Junction extends their hospitality to the Cops for Kids. To make a donation either come down and meet the Riders on September 6 or visit copsforkids. org

“The biggest little country The ice is going in at the Midway arena and the fairsoonaround.”

2014-2015 hockey season follows close behind. Registration for the Boundary Minor Hockey Association (BMHA) will begin tomorrow on Friday, September 5th from 6-8 p.m. at the arena. All registered members will receive a free hotdog. Parents, siblings and guests can also enjoy hotdogs by donation. BMHA president Andrew Bartelings told the Times that the association has partnered with a number of local businesses who will sponsor kids who cannot afford the registration fees. “So if any kid is serious and wants to play hockey we have the financial supports in place already,” he said. He said Boundary Minor Hockey is looking for a Referee in Chief. A few parents have stepped up to volunteer to take a ref clinic on October 5th in Grand Forks. Former Referee in Chief Ross Lautard has moved on to Grand Forks, but Bartelings said Lautard has stated his willingness to help get the program working in the West Boundary. A second registration day will be held on Wednesday, September 10th from 5-7 p.m. for those who cannot make the Friday date.

If you cannot make the registration days but would like to register your child please contact Sarah Geen @ 250-449-8200 or email bmharegistrar1@gmail.com. Registration forms are available on their website www.boundaryminorhockey.ca Geen told the Times that early registration was light and though they hope to have teams in Junior Novice, Senior Novice, Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget it all depends on the number of kids who get registered. Boundary Minor Hockey also invites applications for coaches, assistant coaches, referees and on-ice helpers for the 2014-2015 season. All successful applicants must complete criminal record checks and appropriate training clinics.
