It’s hard for one photo to adequately capture the sheer size and numbers of people who attended the Annual Food Bank Garage Sale at the Curling Rink on Saturday. Above are just a few of the hundreds of bargain hunters who browsed through 100 plus tables of merchandise. Kudos to all the Food Bank volunteers who undertook this huge effort.
East Kootenay Energy Diet continues C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
The City of Kimberley will continue to participate in the East Kootenay Energy Diet by providing $100 rebates for homeowners planning renovations to save energy. Of particular interest in Kimberley are single family homes that heat primarily with heating oil or propane. Twenty-three Kimberley res-
idents took advantage of the subsidies last year to have pre and post retrofit assessments done on their homes. The funding, capped at $5,000, for the Kimberley subsidies comes out of the operating budget of the city’s planning department. This will provide $100 for pre-retrofit assessment for the first 25 households and $100 to-
ward the post-retrofit assessment, and incentives for fuel switching and insulation upgrades. As a signatory to the Climate Action Charter, the city of Kimberley has committed to reducing greenhouse gases and must report yearly on its efforts to do so. Providing incentives for homeowners to become more energy
efficient or switch to lower cost, cleaner heating fuels helps the City meet those commitments. The Regional District of East Kootenay has also committed to continuing the program. More information on the East Kootenay Energy Diet can be found at www.eked.ca
After some challenging times in the tourism industry, it appears there is reason for optimism, says CEO of Kootenay Rockies Tourism Kathy Cooper. “We are starting to see things settle down and stabilize,” Cooper said. “Some numbers from different markets are coming back. The news out of the provincial organization is that things are on the upswing. There is a feeling of optimism that the industry has turned a corner. There are still challenges but it has been a better time frame for tourism in the last few months.” Cooper will deliver that overview when she gives her annual report to the Kootenay Rockies Tourism Industry Conference and Annual General Meeting in Invermere on October 7 and 8, 2014 in Invermere. Cooper says that she will present an overview of Kootenay Rockies Tourism activities over the past year. “I’ll give a summary of activities, the things we’ve done, campaigns
worked on and talk about going forward,” she said. Conference attendees will also hear from the CEO of Destination BC, Marsha Waldon who will bring a report from the provincial perspective. Other presenters include Andrew Nickerson, CEO & President, Tourism Canmore; a Think! Social Media Presentation William Bakker, Chief Strategist & Partner; and a presentation from Kimberley’s Story & Co.’s Matt Thompson. Tourism stakeholders from all over the region are invited to attend the conference. “We extend all the way to Revelstoke, Castlegar, Trail, so hopefully as many people as can make the trip will attend. There is no charge to attend any of the sessions,” Cooper said. “We expect tourism operators and business owners, as well as industry suppliers and sponsors.” In addition to guest speakers, the conference offers networking opportunities, tourism awards and a silent auction.
