NEW HOUSES and townhomes being outfitted with an elevator is less about adding an extravagant feature and more about aging baby boomers who want to stay in their two-storey retirement homes even after their mobility begins to suffer.

Yacht club opening delayed Kathy Michaels STAFF REPORTER

Kelowna Yacht Club members held a ceremony Tuesday as their new flagpole started flying a myriad of colours. But it may be weeks before the actual facility is open for business. According to a club representative, some snags in its completion have set opening day back to September—a few months later than anticipated. The public tenant, the Cactus Club restaurant, will open in the fall. While the multi-million dollar project is behind schedule and over budget, there’s no doubt it has evolved into something that visitors and locals alike can better appreciate, which is good news to the club’s commodore, Mike Terris. And the new flagpole is emblematic of that change. “It’s stunning,” he said. “It really blends into the waterfront and the moorage basin behind it.” The club’s old flagpole, erected in 1951, was retired with the hoisting of the new colours. The old club house was slated to be demolished by now, but that has also been delayed.

Public on alert for over-heated dogs stuck in vehicles Alistair Waters ASSISTANT EDITOR

The manager of the Kelowna SPCA says despite a higher number of calls about animals left in hot cars this summer, she thinks the public is getting the message not to do it. Suzanne Pugh told the Capital News Wednesday that with

the Central Okanagan being the first jurisdiction in B.C., and possibly across Canada, to introduce tickets for people who leave animals in vehicles when the weather is hot or even just warm, the number of calls her office has received has shot up this summer. In the Lower Mainland, Surrey recently followed Kelow-

na’s lead and other municipalities in the province have it listed as a bylaw offence but do not ticket for it. In July, SPCA officials were dispatched 310 times as a result of hot dog calls. That was about 100 calls more than were received in June. On a typical weekend day in the summer, she said it is not

unusual to get 20 calls about dogs left in unventilated vehicles in hot weather. “I think part of it is that we have really stepped up awareness of the issue,” said Pugh. “To get calls is great because then we have a chance to make a difference for an animal.” The cost of a ticket here is $150.

Pugh said she proposed the tickets as part of the regional district’s recent overhaul of its dog control bylaw. The Regional District of the Central Okanagan handles dog control for the local area municipalities.
