Family escapes as cabin explodes
Boy blown out of second story window when cabin explodes C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
A family vacation at a mountain cabin ended in near tragedy on Wednesday, August 13, after a propane explosion destroyed a cabin. Cpl. Ayers of the Columbia Valley Detachment says both members from his detachment and the Kimberley Detachment of the RCMP attended the scene at Whitetail Lake, at kilometre 26 on the Finlay Creek Forest Service Road. “Some time after 4 in the morning on August 13 one of the rental cabins at Whitetail exploded,” Ayers told the Bulletin. “The roof blew off and the cabin is demolished.” Ayers says two families from
Britain had rented what he described as a duplex type cabin. He says in spite of the severity of the explosion, all eight people were accounted for. “One boy, 10 to 12 years old, was flown to Calgary with lacerations, but not life-threatening,” Ayers said. Ayers says the boy was actually blown out the second floor window when the cabin exploded. He was found by neighbouring tourists from another cabin. “It was just very, very fortunate that he survived, that everyone got out,” Ayers said. “It could have been tragic.” He says that police are fairly certain that propane was the cause of the explosion. “We can’t prove it — there’s nothing left of the cabin — but we are confident that it was a propane explosion.”

A special prosecutor with the Criminal Justice Branch approved criminal charges against four individuals as-
sociated with Bountiful on Wednesday. Peter Wilson approved the charges, which allege polygamy and the unlawful removal of children under the age of 16 years from Canada with the intention that an act committed outside Canada would be an offence against section 151 (sexual interference) or 152 (invitation to sexual touching) of
the Criminal Code. Winston Blackmore and James Oler both face charges of polygamy, while Oler also faces a charge for the alleged unlawful removal of a child from Canada. Additionally, Brandon Blackmore and Emily Crossfield each face a charge for alleged unlawful removal of a child from Canada. The charges were sworn
in Cranbrook while first appearance is anticipated to be on Oct. 9th, 2014, in Creston. The new charges come on the revelation of new evidence after the RCMP received a large volume of documentation seized by U.S. authorities after investigations into members of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints in Arizona, Texas and Utah. The story of the bear cub, rescued and sent to the Norther Lights Wildlife Society after being hit by a car between Kimberley and Marysville has come to a sad end. The bear had to be euthanized after it was discovered that his injuries were severe. The bear was rescued by two local sisters, Stephanie and Manuela Hirn, when he was found on the highway last Thursday. Stephanie told the Bulletin that she received word from the Wildlife Society on Thursday, August 14. “Unfortunately this story turned sad. Here is what the Northern Lights Wildlife Society said:

Cranbrook heritage building nominated in B.C. contest Barry Coulter
A Cranbrook Heritage building is in the running in the Architecture Foundation of BC’s 100 Best Buildings contest. More than 500 buildings are listed on the Foundation’s contest website, and Cranbrook’s Studio Stage Door has been nominated in the BC Interior category. The foundation says the contest’s purpose is to “recognize the impact and influence that buildings have had over the past 100 years.” The nomination period closed August 4, and now online voting is taking place. You’re allowed to cast one vote for each of four regions — Vancouver Mainland/ South Coast, BC Interior, Islands, and Northern BC. Nominees could be of any age, purpose, or material. At the end of the voting on September 28, the top 25 buildings in

Today we have a beautiful white clapboard two story building that houses an intimate 83 seat theatre upstairs and a 1,000 square foot dance studio on the main floor. The main floor also houses an office, a green room/ kitchen, a makeup room and four washrooms. “In its life, the theatre space has hosted close to a hundred plays, hundreds of musical events as well as seminars, movies, poetry readings and even City Council meetings. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — There may be itsy-bitsy aliens among us. Scientists say seven microscopic particles collected by NASA’s comet-chasing spacecraft, Stardust, appear to have originated outside our solar system. If confirmed, this would be the world’s first sampling of contemporary interstellar dust. The dust collectors were exposed to space in the early 2000s and returned to Earth in 2006. Since then, dozens of scientists worldwide led by physicist Andrew Westphal of the University of California, Berkeley have hunted for specks and analyzed the ``precious’’ grains found. The team was assisted by 30,000 citizen-scientists who scanned more than 1 million images in search of elusive tracks made by incoming particles. Westphal says the suspected interstellar particles are surprisingly diverse. Some are fluffy like snowflakes. The findings were published Thursday in the journal Science.

Ranchers meet with Agriculture Minister Trish Barnes For The Bulletin
The Kootenay Livestock Association hosted Minister of Agriculture Norm Letnick on a field tour on Wednesday. The group toured sites in the Agricultural Land Reserve, which included an ecosystem restoration treatment area near Cranbrook. Letnick was in town as part of his Summer Farm Tour. “I want public input on Bill 24,” he said. “I’m encouraging people to learn about it and comment on it via our website.” Bill 24 proposes some changes the B.C. Agricultural Land Commission Act. Deadline for comment is August 22, 2014 at engage.gov.bc.ca/ landreserve. Letnick also announced his Ministry’s goal to help B.C. farmers, ranchers and food producers increase
overall revenue to $14 billion per year by 2017. (Revenue is just under $12 billion per year currently.) “I’m asking ranchers and farmers how we can do that,” Letnick said. Kootenay Livestock president Randy Reay, along with past president Jordy Thibeault shared ideas with the minister, as did representatives from the Trench ER Program and the East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council. Dan Murphy, representing the Trench ER Program, told the minister it is cheaper to maintain restored grasslands than to re-thin sites that have grown in again. “If we treat only our core grassland areas, we’ll need to maintain 63,000 hectares over the long term,” Murphy said. “To do that, we’d need about half a million dollars per year. “About 50 per cent,
we hope to maintain with spring and fall prescribed burns, the other 50 per cent would be by slashing “If we do not maintain some of these areas, we’ll have to start over again on re-treating areas—at a cost of between two and a quarter to three and three-quarter million dollars per year.” Both livestock and wildlife in the Trench rely on grasslands and open forests to thrive. Letnick is continuing his tour of the province. “I’m meeting with people in coffee shops, around farmhouse tables and on field trips from Cranbrook to Fort St. John,” he said. It’s time to get out your leashes and dog combs because the Cranbrook and District Kennel Club is having its 41st annual Championship Shows and Obedience Trials. The year’s events take place at Moir Park from Aug. 22-24. Dogs and handlers will be competing in the events coming from Canada and the U.S. Organizers say that many of the top show dogs in Canada will be in attendance. Judges for this year’s competition will be coming from Clinton, Utah, Mexico, Coldwater, Ontario, Victoria and Edmonton. Over 155 dogs are registered for the Saturday, which is the
biggest day, said Margie Leopold, show chair. “This year we’re having for the first time Society Hurdling,” Leopold said. “We have I think four teams coming in from B.C. and Alberta. That’s going to be on Saturday as well. It’s a team, they go over hurdles. They have to pick out there scents and bring them back. It’s like a relay race with four on a team.” Events include conformation, obedience, rally obedience trials, junior handling, canine good neighbour test Thursday evening, Aug. 22. This is open to all dogs in the community, and not just purebreds. “There will be all breeds of dogs coming,” she said. “This was our 41st year, so 41 years of dog shows in Cranbrook. We hope to keep going, but we’re a non-profit organization, so it’s tough. We rely on making enough money to support our next year show.” She said entries are

down this year, as they are across North America. “All the dog show entries are down all over Canada and the United States,” she said. “With the economy we’ve had, people don’t have the money this year to show their dogs. This year has been a year where everyone’s been down on entries.” The show dates are Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Start times are 8 a.m., and Friday and Saturday events will likely go to 3 p.m. On Sunday it will likely finish about 2 o’clock. Entries for conformation close Aug. 6. There will be Day of Show entries for Obedience and Rally Obedience, but it’s suggested that you enter before Aug. 7 as the fee is slightly lower. From Page 1 Wilson received two RCMP reports to Crown Counsel in July 2013 and and January 2014, with some of the material based on evidence that had been considered in earlier charges against Blackmore and Oler. Those charges were thrown out in 2009 after a judge ruled that former B.C. Attorney General Wally Oppal did not have the authority to appoint a third special prosecutor after the previous two recommended against approving charges. Wilson declined to approve other criminal charges, namely alleged offences of sexual exploitation after determining the standard for approving charges had not been met. Wilson was sworn in as a special prosecutor in January 2012 with a mandate to offer legal advice to police during their investigation of individuals associated with Bountiful and assess the possible prosecution of sexual exploitation and the alleged offences against minors in the community. Two weeks later, his role was expanded to include consideration of potential offences under the polygamy provisions of the criminal code. Additionally, the provincial government appealed a ruling by the B.C. Supreme Court last February that a law restricting teachers’ bargaining rights was unconstitutional. The appeal will be made in October, with a decision coming down within a few weeks or months afterwards. The two bargaining chairs met last Friday and agreed to meet this week, said Balfour. She is hoping both sides will make some progress as the start to a new school year looms. Strike action will depend on the state of negotiations, said Balfour. “Our local isn’t going to do anything till the end of August. We’re giving them time to get seriously negotiation here and then we’ll beef up our strike action at the end of August if we have to,” Balfour said.

Meadowbrook memories; North Star Motel turns 50 ANTHONY DR ANSFELD For the Bulletin
50 years ago today, my Dad Tony Dransfeld broke ground to construct the North Star Motel out in Meadowbrook. We built North Star in six months, 12 Units plus the Lodge (our living quarters were upstairs) Elmer Higgins of Wycliffe cleared the site, which was heavily treed. Elmer, who has recently passed away, was a master Dozer Operator. He worked the blade like a surgeon, talent like that is truly a gift... . Dad purchased all of the lumber from Joe Downey in Cranbrook, who ran a sawmill where Gyro Park now sits., in the south part of town. The mill was called Silver Springs. Now Dad was best friends with Milo Fabro, who owned the sawmill in Kimberley, but he got a better price from Mr Downey............ Bruno Rinaldi and Johnny Bay (who hails from Meadowbrook) in-
stalled the North Stars heating and all of the plumbing. Great workers and great people The two of them put in long hours working so we could open for business in February. Johnny Bay resides up at Gardenview, while sadly Bruno has passed on. Frank Sandor (owner of Sandor Rental Cranbrook) did the cement finishing. Was he ever good at his craft, a real pro. My father brought in some rare Arizona Sandstone for Al Silver, a talented bricklayer who built and designed an exquisite Fireplace and chimney. That Fireplace is alive and well today in the present day North Star Motel, which has been beautifully maintained and certainly improved by the current owners Torben and Trish Winther. I stayed at the North Star Motel two winters ago (feeling nostalgic) and was pleasantly surprised how it has been kept.
We opened for business on February 15th 1965, right in the midst of our ski season up at North Star Mountain. Dad had a big North Star Motel sign made in Toronto. Wwe were farming 200 acres 40 miles north of TO. We sold out and packed up to move to someplace called Kimberley B.C. The sign had a large Red Star at the top of it and was only replaced last year. 49 years of winters and summers. North Star Motel now has a beautiful wooden carved sign. Mrs Duvall from Meadowbrook ( passed) was our head of housekeeping and unofficial manager. A person of integrity and complete honest, her children live in the area. North Star Motels most famous guest ? Well that would probably be Eric Clapton blues guitarist and musician. Eric came to Meadowbrook to visit his mom Pat, who had a home behind North Star on Manor
Rd. Pat moved back to England before she passed away, I did ask her once which room her son stayed in and Pat thought it was 6. Clapton would walk up to his moms house, a very short stroll from the Motel. We also hosted the Nelson Maple Leaf Senior A Hockey Club when they came over to play our Kimberley Dynamiters. When the playoffs rolled around , it was always a bit tense, for, inasmuch as The Maple Leaf Executive (Art O’Brian and Peter Godfrey) always gave me tickets, yet I cheered for the Dynamiters. By the way Nelson left their rooms spotless., our best team guests by far. It is funny how you remember things like that. 50 years has sped by very quickly. Tucked away up the hill in Meadowbrook, the North Star Motel remains the best kept secret for good acommodation in and around Kimberley, a scant three minutes to the Sully Pub too.

Further evidence of Kimberley’s business development is seen in the announcement this week that the Royal Bank of Canada is
shortly to open a branch in Kimberley. Work is to start soon on construction of temporary quarters for the bank on Wallinger Avenue at the rear of Lloyd’s Hardware, The bank will occupy this site until such time as an entirely new building is completed to stretch from the corner of Spokane and Wallinger to the lane adjacent to the
post office. The bank will then take up permanent quarters on the site now occupied by Martin Agencies. Announcement of the entry of the Royal Bank into this city’s business life was made Wednesday by P.M. Irwin, manager of the bank’s Cranbrook branch. See Page 5
Rescued cub euthanized From Page 1 “My heart is in pieces knowing what pain he must have endured. His right leg was shattered at the elbow destroying his growth plates. His upper jaw was badly fractured and he lost all his front teeth. As this was also a yearling and not a cub of the year, that meant he lost his permanent teeth. We all agreed that these injuries would not allow a return to the wild and even a life in human care would
mean a life in pain and subsequently decided to let him go. “Still, trying to rescue him was the right choice, as left in the wild he would have died a long painful death of infection and starvation. Thanks to all that cared enough not to let that happen.” Stephanie says that all the funds raised so far for the bear’s care will still go to the Wildlife Society to help then with their animal rescue work.

Words, dance, music, art celebrated at Kimberley Kaleidoscope Festival
FOR THE BULLETIN
The Kimberley Kaleidoscope festival featured a novel spoken word event on Wednesday evening, August 6, when organizer Heather Wattie, assisted by Margaret Moe and Sharla Smith, presented Walkabout Wordsmythes, an evening of poetry and prose read by local writers, concluding with a reading from several of her works by Fernie author Angie Abdou. What was novel (pardon the pun) about the evening was that it took place in different locations, the guests being led by flute-playing Jeannie MacDonald from the courtyard to the gallery to the dance studio to the theatre, at each location listening to readings by different local writers. Delicious appetizers made by Sharla were enjoyed with wine and other refreshments and Sharla heroically entertained on the grand piano, despite a bandaged finger injured during food preparation. From words to dance, the festival moved to the Platzl on Thursday evening for an original vertical dance performance by dancer and choreographer Trina Rasmusen, suspended from ropes on the outer wall of the Spirit Rock Climbing Centre. About 150 people gathered to watch the performance, which was accompanied by members of the Kimberley Community band, conducted by Ian Ferrie. A special treat was a debut perfor-

The festival drew to its conclusion with the 10th annual Arts on the Edge Gala Reception at Centre 64 on Friday evening, followed by the Arts on the Edge festival in the Platzl and at the Centre 64 outdoor concert site on Saturday afternoon and evening. Friday night’s gala, always a popular gathering of art lovers, featured the awarding of $2,300 in prizes to 14 winning artworks in the two adjudicated exhibitions, both of which will continue on display in the gallery until August 30. Top prize in the emerg-
ing artists’ exhibition went to Amy Cornelson, while the established artists’ exhibition top prize went to Lynne Luker. The Don Davies Jazz Quartet entertained throughout the evening while guests bid on over 80 donated items in the silent auction, the major fund-raiser for the festival, which this year raised approx. $4,000. Although the Platzl was disappointingly quiet on Saturday during the festival, perhaps due to the splitting of musical performances between the Platzl gazebo and the Centre 64 outdoor stage, those in attendance enjoyed the high jinks of musician and children’s entertainer Matt Duffus and the tummy swivels

see a significant increase in attendance. The Way it Was “BUILDING BOOM PROVIDES JOBS” Kimberley is enjoying one of its most active summer building booms in many years, most of it in the hands of the Fabro Building and supply Company Ltd. The local firm now has 100 men on its payroll, including full-time operation of a sawmill adjacent to the city. Projects now under way include the big addition to the Hudson’s Bay Company store here, which will be opened the early part of winter to provide the district with one of the largest super-markets in the Kootenays; additions to the Marysville Elementary and P.J. McKim High Schools; and an extensive sidewalk program, now nearing completion. The Bay job is expected to take three months but difficulties in obtaining steel have already been encountered. As the picture above shows, it will occupy a large area, formerly on the site of the old post office and will be connected to the main store by archways. Growth of the Marysville area has resulted in the need for additional accommo-
dation at the school there and new classrooms are provided under plans approved by the ratepayers last December. At McKim High School a link is being built to join the older building to the new high school. This job will be completed in time for school opening in September. One further school job remains, and that is the addition of several classrooms to the Blarchmont school. This is being held up by the variation, as much as 15 per cent, between estimates prepared by the school board’s architects and the tenders submitted by contractors. All contractors have been asked to re-submit their bids and a decision may be reached by Friday. Al Fabro, president of the Kimberley Chamber of Commerce, and an official of the contracting firm, pointed out this week that not so long ago all lumber used in Kimberley had to be imported. Now it is provided by the Fabro sawmills which are having one of their busiest seasons in years.

The power and pain of depression “Where does depression hurt? Everywhere. Who does depression hurt? Everyone.” We’ve all seen the ads on television. Those words are true. The truth of those words have hit home again with the suicide of Robin Williams. Others are starting to talk about their own struggles with depression, including Olympic athlete Clara Hughes, who has done much to raise funds for this disease. I have also been victimized by this disease. In late 2000, I was diagnosed with clinical depression. As a priest, I felt like I had to keep it private. I couldn’t let others know of my struggles. After all, my role was to be a helper, not to be someone who needed help. But I finally reached the point where I no longer had a choice. I couldn’t hold it together, and my world came crashing down. I was ready to say goodbye to it all. Literally. I had made a suicide plan, and was so very close to carrying it out. It was only by sheer grace that someone found me in time and called the police who took me to the Mental Health Ward of the hospital in Regina, where I was involuntarily committed. For 72 hours, I was watched. All I had was some loose fitting hospital pajamas and booties. I couldn’t go anywhere without permission, and I was not able to do anything without being watched. Part of the problem for me was the stigma that is still such a powerful force in our society. It’s ok to admit that you’ve got a
broken leg, and to get it looked after and to wear a cast. But it seems to be less ok to admit that your thoughts and your emotions are spiralling out of control. So you hide it. You try to deal with it all on your own—which is exactly the worst thing to do when you’re depressed. But when I could no longer avoid admitting that I Rev. Yme needed help, the first thing I Woensdregt experienced was a profound sense of relief. I wasn’t alone anymore. I didn’t have to worry about keeping up appearances. My dark secret was out. Guess what? The world didn’t end. In some real sense, a new world was born. People sat with me in the darkness of my depression, and told me that I was loved and that I had value as a human being. As time went on, I began to get the help I needed from some caring, compassionate and tough psychiatric nurses, as well as family and friends. It was clear that I needed help. Once I had admitted in that moment of desperation that I couldn’t do it by myself, the healing began. None of this was easy. It’s pretty scary to admit our need and to become vulnerable. But I also know that’s when my life began again. And to be completely honest, I still don’t have it all together. And that’s ok. In his novel, “The Emperor of Ocean Park”, Stephen Carter writes, “I am depressed. And I almost like it. Depression is seductive: it offends and teases, frightens you and draws you in, tempting you with its promise of sweet oblivion, then overwhelming you with a nearly sexual power,
squirming past your defenses, dissolving your will, invading the tired spirit so utterly that it becomes difficult to recall that you ever lived without it … or to imagine that you might live that way again. With all the guile of Satan himself, depression persuades you that its invasion was all your own idea, that you wanted it all along. It fogs the part of the brain that reasons, that knows right and wrong. It captures you with its warm, guilty, hateful pleasures, and, worst of all, it becomes familiar. All at once, you find yourself in thrall to the very thing that most terrifies you. Your work slides, your friendships slide, your marriage slides, but you scarcely notice: to be depressed is to be half in love with disaster.” It is a frighteningly accurate description of what I felt as I slid towards the abyss. I suspect many people who struggle with depression might recognize themselves in it as well. I often think that comics use laughter as a tool to beat the monsters of their world down to size. I heard an interview following Robin Williams’ suicide in which someone said, “Comedy is an alchemy ... it takes pain and turns it into laughter. In a world like this filled with so much horror, why wouldn’t you use all the tools at your disposal — love certainly, and hope and trust, but also laughter.” Rest in peace, Robin Williams. Canadian Press also reported on an email exchange with Redford’s assistant in which the question of an embassy staffer being in the vehicle with the Premier was discussed. Redford did not want such a person in the vehicle with her. It was eventually decided that the embassy employee would be in the vehicle but would be requested not to speak to the Premier (!) Oh well, I guess I can do without my eyeballs. But let us not blame poor Michelle Tetreault. She was, and is, a public servant, and as such does what her boss (the Queen) told her to do. When the Queen says “go forth and scope out bathrooms in India”, the public servant does it. The astounding thing about this whole Redford thing is that she thought she could get away with it. You don’t get to be Premier of a Canadian province without having some smarts. So how can you be smart enough to be Premier and still think that no one will notice egregious misuse of taxpayer dollars? In this time of texting and emails such details are only a Freedom of Information request away. Yet Queen Redford, high in her lofty perch of power, thought such things her due, and no one would dare question her. That’s hubris folks. And the gods have smited her. China’s Chechnya: Terrorism in Xijiang It’s not really “China’s Chechnya” yet, but the insurgency in Xinjiang is growing fast. Incidents of anti-Chinese violence are getting bigger and much more frequent. Since March, 176 people have been killed in six separate attacks on Chinese police and government officials, local collaborators and ordinary Chinese residents of Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in northwestern China, and the authorities don’t seem to have a clue what to do about it. The Uighur attackers have mostly used knives or explosives in their attacks (guns are hard to get in China), but nobody has suggested that they are so technologically backward that their bombs come with long, trailing fuses that have to be lit by hand. Yet Chinese police in Xinjiang last month seized tens of thousands of boxes of matches. The rebels, on the other hand, are very serious people. Like most independence movements of the colonial era, they believe that you have to take the war to the homeland of the “oppressor” if you can. One of those recent attacks was not in Xinkiang but in Kunming in southwestern China, where a band of eight knife-wielding Uighurs killed 29 ordinary Chinese citizens and wounded 143 in the main railway station. Another standard tactic in this sort of war is the use of violence to deter one’s own people from collaborating with the colonial power. On 30 July Jume Tahir, the imam of China’s largest mosque, in the city of Kashgar in Xinjiang, was stabbed to death just after leading early morning prayers. His crime? Praising Communist Party policies and blaming the rising tide of violence on
Uighur separatists and extremists. The Uighurs are overwhelmingly Sunni Muslims, and the official Chinese line blames the separatist violence on foreign Islamists who are stirring up the local people. The separatists themselves say that it is a legitimate response to Chinese oppression, and in particular to the Chinese government’s policy of flooding Xinjiang with Han Chinese immigrants in an attempt to change the territory’s demographic balance. The truth, as usual, is more complicated. Gwynne Xinjiang (literally “New Territory) was conquered Dyer by Chinese troops in the 1750s, but the population mix did not change. In the early 19th century a census reported the population as 30 percent Han Chinese (almost all living north of the Tian Shan mountains) and 60 percent Uighurs, Turkic-speaking Muslim farmers who accounted for almost the entire population south of the mountains. The rest were Kazakhs, Huis, Mongols and others. The Uighurs had grown to 75 percent of the total population by the 1953 census, with many by then living north of the mountains. The Han Chinese had fallen to only 6 percent. But now, thanks to largescale immigration, the Chinese are back up to fully 40 percent of Xinkiang’s population, while the 10 million Uighurs are down to 45 percent. In other words, the numbers will support almost any argument you want to make, if you choose your census dates carefully. But it is certainly not true that Han Chinese people are newcomers to Xinjiang, and it is probably not true that the Chinese government has a policy of en-
couraging Han immigration to reduce the Uighurs to a marginal minority. Chinese officials themselves say that they are trying to develop the Xinjiang economy and raise local living standards, with the (unstated) goal of making people so prosperous and content that they will not even think of “betraying the motherland” by seeking independence. It’s just that a developed economy requires job skills that are not plentiful among the Uighurs, so large numbers of Han Chinese are drawn in to do those jobs. Add in all the resentment about the brutal assaults on the Uighurs’ culture and religion that happened during the Cultural Revolution – and continue in a minor key even today, thanks mainly to ignorant government officials who have never before lived outside an exclusively Chinese cultural context. And now there is also a radical Islamist ideology available, for those who are thinking about rebellion. So now it’s getting really serious in Xinkiang: the last big incident, on 28 July, saw hundreds of Uighurs storm a police station and government offices armed with knives and axes. 59 of the attackers were killed and 215 arrested, while 37 (presumably Chinese) civilians were murdered. When you have organised groups doing violence on this scale, you are already in a low-level war. It will probably never be as bad as Chechnya, and it is very unlikely that Xinkiang will ever be independent, but it may be a long and ugly counter-insurgency war, with many deaths. Roller derby is on the rise in the East Kootenays Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
Roller derby is on the rise around the world and proof of that can be found right here in the East Kootenays. According to Bryan Mcwilliam, manager for Canada’s national roller derby team, it’s a combination of factors that has helped propel derby to its current status. “The switch from a sideshow act, similar to professional wrestling, to a more [legitimate] sport has kept people coming back,” Mcwilliam wrote via email Thursday afternoon. “The sport allows people who may have lost their window in sports such as hockey, figure skating or anything else, to continue to play an amateur sport at a competitive level.”
According to the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, the global governing body for women’s roller derby, the number of derby leagues across the world increased from one in 2001 to 1,100 as recently as 2012. The East Kootenay Roller Derby League (EKRDL), established in 2011, is one of those leagues and housed three teams in 2014. Invermere’s Killer Rollbots took home the 2014 EKRDL title, defeating Kimberley’s Bavarian Barbarians July 5 at Marysville Arena. The Elkford-based Wildcat Brawlers finished the season in third place. The Fernie-based Avalanche City Roller Girls left the EKRDL as league champions in 2013 and have kept the momentum rolling ever since.
RollerGirl.ca maintains extensive statistics and rankings for roller derby teams across the country. As of Aug. 14, Avalanche City was 12th in the country amongst 128 travelling derby teams ranked by RollerGirl.ca, proving that East Kootenay-based clubs are beginning to make a name for themselves in the national derby conversation. Kimberley’s Bavarian Barbarians find a place in the national RollerGirl.ca rankings, edging into the non-travelling ranks in 75th position out of 78 ranked teams. Pamela “Rock ‘N’ Rogue” Nevlud is in her first full season with the Barbarians and was drawn to the sport for the reasons Mcwilliam outlined — it allowed her to continue participating in sport at a
high-level of competition. “I went out to my first bout last year,” Nevlud said. “During the game, I was just like, ‘Wow, I need to play this sport.’ And I joined the next week. “It’s a really different sport. The 2014 Canadian National Archery Championships were held in Lac La Biche, Alta. Aug. 1 to 10 and three sharp-shooters from the East Kootenays returned home in decorated fashion. “The success rate was amazing,” said Cranbrook Archery Club coach Elaine Johnson. “We try not to push the kids to go in and make a podium spot. “There can only be three people that hit the podium out of a lot [of competitors]. We push the kids really hard at doing their very best and [to focus on] sportsmanship.” Cranbrook’s Brittany Johnson heads the champion shooters, having earned a gold medal and two silver medals in women’s junior compound bow competition. field win was earned in a headto-head, one arrow shoot off as he and another competitor were tied following regular competition. Pitney found success in the field and FITA events. Jaffray’s Kevin Evans rounded out the group of winners, bringing home a gold medal in men’s senior para-open compound bow FITA competition. Luc Volard, Keelan Boyle and coach Johnson — all of Cranbrook — and Kimberley’s Jessica Krewenchuk, also competed at the championships. Coach Johnson said competitors shot several times a week for several hours at a time in order to prepare for the Canadian National Archery Championships. Additionally, some engage in aerobic and weight training programs to further prepare for competition.

BALTIMORE — Rob Manfred has been elected baseball’s 10th commissioner and will succeed Bud Selig in January. A labour lawyer who has worked for Major League Baseball since 1998, Manfred beat out Boston Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner on Thursday in the first contested vote for a new commissioner in 46 years.
The 55-year-old, who grew up in Rome, New York, must address issues that include decreased youth interest and the longer games. He has served as MLB’s chief operating officer for the past year. Selig turned 80 last month and has ruled baseball since September 1992, when he was among the owners who forced Commissioner Fay Vincent’s resignation. He said he intends to retire in January.

CAMP TONTOZONA, Ariz. — Chip Sarafin watched the others before him break down the barriers, athletes like Jason Collins and Michael Sam who let the world know they were gay. The Arizona State offensive lineman had already told his teammates and coaches long

But when Sarafin finally took his turn to pass through the door, he was a little surprised to find what was on the other side. “I was a little nervous when it came to my attention what a big influence this was having,’’ Sarafin said Thursday. “I did not intend for it to get to the magnitude that it did.’’

WASHINGTON — More than two-thirds of the recent rapid melting of the world’s glaciers can be blamed on humans, a new study finds. Scientists looking at glacier melt since 1851 didn’t see a human fingerprint until about the middle of the 20th century. Even then only one-quarter of the warming wasn’t from natural causes. But since 1991, about 69 per cent of the rapidly increasing melt was man-made, said Ben Marzeion, a climate scientist at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. “Glaciers are really shrinking rapidly now,” he said. “I think it’s fair to say most of it is manmade.” Scientists fault global warming from the burning of coal, oil and gas as well as changes in land use near glaciers and soot pollution. Glaciers in Alaska and the Alps in general have more human-caused melting than the global average, Marzeion said. The study is published Thursday in the journal Science. The research is the first to calculate just how much of the glacial melting can be attributed to people and “the jump from about a quarter to roughly 70 per cent of total glacier mass loss is significant and concerning,” said University of Alaska Fairbanks geophysicist Regine Hock, who wasn’t part of the study. Over the last two decades, about 295 billion tons (269 billion metric tons) of ice is melting each year on average due to human causes and about 130 billion tons (121 million metric tons) a year are melting because of natural causes, Marzeion calculated. Glaciers alone add to about four-tenths of an inch of sea level rise every decade, along with even bigger increases from melting ice sheets — which are different than glaciers — and the expansion of water with warmer temperatures. The difference is what was caused by humans. Scientists aren’t quite certain what natural causes started glaciers shrinking after the end of the Little Ice Age in the middle of the 19th century, but do know what are human-causes: climate change, soot, and local changes in land use. Richard Alley, who wasn’t part of the research. “The authors have quantified what I believe most scientists would have expected.” Not all of the human-caused melting is from global warming from the burning of fossil fuels, but climate change is the biggest factor, said Ted Scambos, a scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center. The study showed that it took time for global warming and other factors to build up and cause melting. That lag effect means the world is already locked into more rapid melting from the warming that has already occurred, Marzeion and Alley said.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Authorities rescued three men making a pilgrimage to an abandoned bus in the Alaska wilderness made famous by the book and film “Into the Wild.” Three hikers, two from Wisconsin and third with no known address, needed help last week after one of them tripped and hurt himself with an axe, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported. They ran into trouble Aug. 6 on the Stampede Trail just north of the entrance to Denali National Park and Preserve, about 180 miles north of Anchorage. The Tri-Valley Volunteer Fire Department responded and gave the
three hikers a ride on all-terrain vehicles, the Alaska State Troopers announced Wednesday on their website. Matthew Peot, 29, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Thomas Young, 45, of Horicon, Wisconsin; and Kenneth Young, whose age and hometown wasn’t listed, were trying to get to the dilapidated bus, but the Teklanika River was too high, troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email to The Associated Press. They camped for a few days, waiting to see if the river would get low enough to cross, but the axe injury ended the quest, Peters wrote. Thomas Young suffered minor injuries in the accident.
Authorities often are called to help people heading to the dilapidated bus made famous by the book and movie “Into the Wild,” which chronicle the life and death of Chris McCandless. He hiked into the Alaska wilderness in April 1992 with little food and equipment and spent the summer living in the bus. McCandless was found dead in the bus almost four months later after starving to death. Four years ago, a Swiss woman drowned in the river on the trail to the bus, but it was unclear whether she was hiking to the vehicle or just hiking in the area.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I’m 50 years old and have two adult children. Their mother and I divorced 15 years ago. Throughout our marriage, my wife had many affairs. She’s married twice since we split up. Five years ago, my son married a woman who has become close to my ex. My daughter-in-law has labeled me a mental case to many family members, friends and acquaintances. I can count on one hand the number of times I have seen my son in the past five years, and each time, he was extremely disrespectful and said horrible things to me. They now have a 2-year-old son, whom I have seen only briefly on three occasions even though they live nearby. I believe my ex-wife has had a great influence in turning my son into a cold, ruthless person. I’m financially well off and recently updated my will to leave my son only $20 because of all the pain and anguish he has caused me. I prefer to distance myself from him, but I would like to have a relationship with my grandson. Is there any way to do this? -Proud Grandpa Dear Grandpa: Not without also having some type of relationship with your son. After all, he isn’t preventing you from seeing the boy. Some states are sympathetic to grandparents’ rights, but your son might be able to convince the judge that his distancing is in his son’s best interest, and you could be cut out entirely. It’s risky, and we don’t recommend it for you. We have no doubt that your ex-wife has influenced her son and his wife. But if you want a relationship with your grandson, you need to tolerate his parents and be civil to them. Perhaps in time they will see how much their child loves you and will warm up. We hope so. Dear Annie: I married my wife in 1957. We were compatible in every way and very much in love. We have four children, eight grandkids and 11 great-grandkids. Since the day I met her, whenever I held her or kissed her, she was always my 16-year-old sweetheart. She is still the gal I fell in love with. About five years ago, my wife lost interest in lovemaking and will not talk about why. I’m sure she isn’t cheating. She is 73, and I am 79. After 55 years together, I have finally noticed that she has aged. She just laughs when I say that I wish she would still act like my 16-yearold gal when I hold her and kiss her. I truly miss her touch and sweet words. She tells me she loves me, but it doesn’t feel like it. The thing I want to get across is to always treat your partner like you did the first day you met him or her. It’s the best way of getting to your 57th anniversary. I promised to love her until the day I die, and I will keep that promise until we are head-to-head in our mausoleum 5th-floor penthouse. -- The Old Fool Dear Fool: We sympathize, but we are also astounded at how many men truly do not understand what happens to a woman’s libido at menopause and beyond. Your wife’s lack of interest in lovemaking has nothing to do with how much she cares for you. She would probably love being your 16-year-old sweetheart, but her current hormonal state doesn’t permit it. It’s a physical change. There are treatments, but they don’t work for everyone. Talk to your wife. Say that her physical touch -- not sex -- would mean the world to you, and ask whether she would be a bit more affectionate. Dear Annie: Thank you for printing the letter from “Disgusted in New York,” whose 85-year-old aunt wasn’t bathed in the hospital. I have been a nurse for many years. We never give baths in bathtubs to patients. We “bathe” them in bed -- what my mother would have called a sponge bath. Also, it is possible to shower people who can handle a shower chair. However, this lady seemed to have an odor, thus none of the proper things was done for her well-being and comfort. -A.S.
