Fire rips through Coldstream mill JENNIFER SMITH Morning Star Staff

Employees weren’t five minutes into their morning break when dark smoke started seeping from one of the kilns at Coldstream Lumber Tuesday. Vinton Rickett, a forklift driver at the Ricardo Road mill, was quick to alert everyone to the blaze. “I saw smoke and yelled fire,” said Rickett, who has no idea how the fire was sparked since the kilns were shut down and, thankfully, no one was in the building at the time. There were also reports of an explosion and electrical breakers blowing. As smoke continued to pour from the structure, workers actively fought the fire with small hoses until firefighters arrived. “One of our initial attack crew was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation,” said Rickett. The call, which came in before 9 a.m., drew firefighters from Coldstream, Lavington, Lumby and BX-Swan Lake, as well as

Fire Chief Shane Code. “We just needed to put a lot of big water on a big fire.” Initially the fire was contained to the building, but was spewing smoke which was visible from Vernon. “It was the ugliest colour smoke you’ll ever see,” said

one witness. Coldstream Lumber employee Cal Scheske recalls seeing: “Lots of flame and lots of smoke coming from out of our kiln which is not a good thing. “It’s definitely scary,” said Scheske. “I’ve worked in

mills all my life and it’s the first fire I’ve ever seen in a mill.” As Scheske and the other employees stood on scene watching the firefighters battle the blaze, there were some concerns about how the damage would impact

their jobs. But Scheske is confident any interruption will be temporary. “We’ll probably be up and running in no time.” While the heat of the blaze melted the front of the giant white canopy, fire crews managed to quarantine the fire to the kiln building. But there were concerns of collapse, as one wall had fallen down. No cause of the fire is known at this time as the blaze remains under investigation. “It’s too early to tell, the workers couldn’t tell us anything,” said Code. As firefighters battled the blaze throughout the day and continued to monitor the site into the night, Code is grateful for the assistance of all, including B.C. Ambulance. “They’ve done a great job of taking care of folks and making sure that our firefighters are rested and hydrated and make sure that the workers who were on scene are treated and assessed.”

Four people are in police custody after a firearms incident in Vernon Tuesday. Vernon RCMP received numerous reports of shots fired in the area of Polson Park at around 8 a.m. “Our officers immediately set up containment in the area,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “Witnesses reported there were multiple people involved and several shots fired. Our officers requested the assistance from our helicopter and our dog teams to search for suspects.” One person, a Vernon man,

was arrested and taken into custody near Polson Park. Molendyk confirmed shots were fired but he was not aware of any firearm or firearms being found. During the early stage of the investigation, RCMP in Kelowna were made aware of the events in Vernon from their counterparts. That led police in Kelowna to keep an eye out for a suspect vehicle, a green Chevrolet Cavalier. It was spotted by officers in Kelowna on Highway 97 near Mills Road just after 11 a.m., then again just before noon by Kelowna plainclothes officers in the 1000 block of Glenmore Road. Through a combined effort

between the Kelowna RCMP street enforcement team, general duty patrol officers, RCMP air services and police service dogs, the vehicle was stopped and three individuals in the car were taken into police custody without incident. The trio arrested are a 34-yearold Vernon man, a 23-year-old man from Surrey, and a 28-yearold Toronto woman. All three suspects were arrested for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and remain in police custody. There have been no reports of injuries relating to the gunshots. It is believed all parties are known to each other. The incident remains under investigation.

Film commemorates Kwong’s historic moment Kevin Mitchell Sports Editor e was called names, denied a haircut in his hometown, stopped at the U.S. border and refused work in the Trail smelter where his teammates earned extra money. Larry Kwong is, however, not a bitter man. He was taught to tolerate racism and be a better man. He made history by breaking the colour barrier in the NHL with one 90-second shift with the New York Rangers on March 13, 1948 at the Montreal Forum. Kwong, born and raised in Vernon, wore No. 11 with the Rangers less than a year after Jackie Robinson shattered the baseball colour line. Vernon’s Ernie Gare Jr., a scout with the Rangers, presented Kwong with a numbered and lettered New York jersey, courtesy of Ranger president and GM Glen Sather, at the world theatrical premiere of The Shift: The Story of The China Clipper, Sunday night at the Okanagan College Lecture Theatre. “It’s a very nice jersey,” said the softspoken Kwong, 91. “It (time in NHL) was about a minute and a half and I was a winger. We didn’t have any scoring chances.

I knew (Jean) Beliveau and Dickie Moore and had played against them before so I wasn’t awestruck.” A crowd of 120, including current and former players, and scouts from 24 NHL teams, attended the invite-only screening sponsored by the Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame. Veteran filmakers Chester Sit and Wes Miron, both of Edmonton, produced the 45-minute movie. Sit was at the premiere and said it took 18 months to put together. “I think it’s a great film,” said Sit, 36, whose parents immigrated from Hong Kong in 1970. “I’ve been saying to everybody, it’s for Larry. It’s more about what he went through and what he achieved and how he changed peoples’ perceptions in general. The film kind of pays homage to it. “I hope we did a good job of it. I hope that other people will learn from the history of it because it’s not so much a racism story, it’s about people learning not to judge each other based on physical attributes or whatever because when one of us is oppressed, we all are oppressed. We all need to be equal because

He looked so small.” In one clip, Kwong talks about being coached by Toe Blake while starring for the Valleyview Braves in the Quebec Senior League, often challenging Beliveau for the scoring lead. “He (Blake) told me I had one job to do. Wherever Beliveau goes, you go. If he goes to the toilet, you go to the toilet.” A father of one daughter and two granddaughters, Kwong powered the Vernon Hydrophones to the B.C. Midget hockey championship in 1939 and then to the provincial juvenile crown in 1941. As an 18-year-old, Kwong jumped the junior ranks to play senior for the Trail Smoke Eaters, who had won the 1939 World Ice Hockey Championships. Kwong, an assistant captain with Valleyfield, earned $6,000 a season in Quebec, where he said he was “treated good by all the French people.”

He became the first person of Chinese descent to coach a pro hockey team. He later coached HC Lugano and HC Lausanne and also became a tennis coach in Switzerland. Former Vernon Laker scoring machine Jason Elders has discussed Kwong’s story with Soon; Elders’ daughter, Emma, played minor hockey with Soon’s son, Quinn. “I think it was awesome and I think a lot of people are going to like it. It was entertaining, had a bit of humour in there, and it’s part of history in Canada.” Said longtime B.C. Hockey director Bill Greene, of Armstrong: “Absolutely fantastic. What an honour to be here and what a great guy to honour. It was excellent to see him here and fantastic making note of him and presenting him to the rest of the province as a real builder.” There was a short question period following the film and retired NHLer Brent Gilchrist asked Sit if the NHL Players’ Association had ever recognized Kwong. “I think it’s about time,” said Gilchrist, to cheers, after Sit replied the NHLPA had not acknowledged Kwong. Added Gilchrist afterwards: “This was awesome. (Director of Player Development, Colorado Avalanche) Dave Oliver and I were just talking about it and it needs to be recognized, by not just the Association, but the NHL and probably the Hall of Fame. On my part, I’d like to call somebody in the Players Association and get something started. In the last 10, 15 years, there’s been a lot of diversity training and we’ve had a lot of talk about having minority players who were pioneers, to come in and teach what it was like, and Larry should be part of that.” Duane Dennis, who along with Oliver, boosted the Lakers to Vernon’s first national Junior A trophy in 1990, also enjoyed the film which will be shown throughout China in coming months. “It was very well done,” said Dennis. “Just like Gillie said, this guy should have been honoured and recognized decades ago so this is a special honour for him. This was an eye-opener and I’m glad it’s out in the public eye and it’s going to be seen by millions of people.” Ex-Portland Winter Hawk superstar Dennis Holland, a scout with the Dallas Stars who played in the minors, gave props to Kwong.

The way of hockey players goes through him and you sure appreciate somebody like Larry who accomplishes something this impressive.” Three-time Paralympic gold-medalist Sonja Gaudet, inducted into the Okanagan shrine two years after Kwong, said: “I thought it was excellent, it was very interesting. It was great to see such a great trailblazing story. Anytime you can shed some light on some of those social issues, I think it’s a great documentary.” Short videos on Gilchrist and Eddie Johnstone, who made the Rangers 28 years after Kwong, were shown prior to the The Shift. Fellow Original Six player Odie Lowe, who played four games with the Rangers, was introduced before scores of NHL alumni and scouts, including Mark Ferner, Craig Demetrick, Marty Stein, Al Tuer, Sam McMaster, Jason Podollan, George Fargher and Jerred Smithson. “I want to thank all of you for coming,” said Kwong. “I didn’t know there were so many hockey players in Vernon. If I had known, I wouldn’t have showed up. I can’t match their records. Thanks, Chad, for making this happen.” Soon says the Hall of Fame hopes to show the film again at a local venue. The movie is currently running on the OMNI network in Cantonese. Kwong, who is in a wheelchair, goes to the gym three times a week and attends all the Calgary Stampeders’ home games. His father, who died when Larry was five, ran a general store in downtown Vernon (kitty corner to Fishers Hardware on Coldstream Avenue) called Kwong Hing Lung which translates into “Abundant Prosperity.”

Coldstream politicians sat quietly for four hours Monday as more than 70 people took turns sharing their thoughts on the proposed pellet plant in Lavington. And they will have their listening ears on again this Monday. The mass turnout is due to the Pinnacle Renewable Energy plant, a partnership with Tolko, which is proposed for Lavington, off School Road. Even though a large number of people spoke up at the public hearing, Coldstream wants to ensure all voices are heard before it decides whether or not to grant the necessary zoning change which would accommodate the pellet plant. “I would really like to hear from new people or new information,” said Mayor Jim Garlick. “I don’t want to re-hash any of this.” Coldstream is also sending a notice to Pinnacle and the Ministry of Environment regarding the emissions approval. “It is stated that we not support the permit if they could not meet the air quality of the objec-

Coldstream is also requesting that if the plant is approved, that there be a monitoring station at Lavington Elementary School and in the area of dispersion. That information must also be made available to the public on an ongoing basis. “There is no safe level of emissions,” said young Jaden Scott, one of many Lavington residents who spoke out at Monday’s public meeting. hurt anybody’s children.” His words were echoed by Al Thorlakson, retired president, who says they didn’t invest in pellet plants earlier because they had the same questions the public has. But now: “If we thought this project was a health hazard we wouldn’t proceed.” Al even confirmed that they would pave the exit road from the mill to Hill Drive to further reduce dust. Using a natural product, with no glues or additives, the plant is like those in Poland where you cannot even see the emissions, says Leroy Reitsma, Pinnacles President and CEO. The plant is also aimed at dealing with an excess supply of fibre following the closure of the residual plant in Kamloops. But there remains concerns, including fire hazards, and objections to the plant. And there was one resounding message from those opposed, which was echoed by Rose Brietkrietz. “To represent me, council must reject Pinnacles application.” Coldstream will continue to accept letters until Monday, including comments at the public hearing at 6 p.m. before a decision is possibly made.

The City of Vernon believes it has come up with a solution that will allow select residents to join the city’s road and sanitary infrastructure without ruffling Regional District of North Okanagan feathers. The city is proposing a block boundary extension of all properties adjacent to the city’s road and sewer infrastructure. “When septic systems fail, historically we have been asked to rescue it,” said Vernon Mayor Rob Sawatzky. “It’s a very uncomfortable position for us because we want to work with (electoral areas) B and C representatives. “This is an attempt to bring clarity, and bring an end to an ongoing, endless trickle of people asking to join or annex with us.” The city’s current policy regarding boundary extensions is to accept applications from property owners where the property meets certain criteria. This process, however, has shown to be lengthy, contentious and take up a great deal of staff time and resources. In a comprehensive report to council, Kim Flick – the city’s director

Fire and police officials are investigating an early morning fire Monday that is being labelled suspicious. The fire broke out around 2 a.m. Monday on Middleton Mountain in the area of Mt. Bulman Place. The fire heavily damaged a children’s play shed and a considerable portion of grass. “It’s being treated as suspicious because we have no reason as to why the fire would have started,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.

hile federal and provincial officials continue to have their heads buried in the sand, the invaders are getting ever closer to the Okanagan. The Okanagan Basin Water Board, which has been fighting hard to keep non-indigenous quagga and zebra mussels out of local lakes, has learned that the species is now next door in Alberta. So far this year, inspectors have intercepted eight mussel-infected boats, all headed for the Calgary and Edmonton areas. All of this is known is because Alberta has shown leadership and established inspection Richard Rolke stations on four major routes entering that province along its southern and eastern borders. It’s something the B.C. government has refused to do. “Action by our province is not dependent on the federal government acting,” said Doug Findlater, OBWB chairperson, referring to failed attempts to have Ottawa adopt legislation allowing border agents to inspect boats coming into Canada. “Alberta didn’t wait for the federal legislation. They moved quickly to protect their lakes and we should do the same. They get it. It’s a serious threat and they’ve invested money in helping protect themselves. B.C. needs to do the same.” And while money is tight, inspection stations doesn’t have to cost a dime. OBWB has suggested that a boater-pay sticker program, as occurs across the U.S., is a viable source of revenue. While politicians and bureaucrats sit on their hands, the mussels continue their march since being introduced to North America from Europe in the 1980s. Consider that one female mussel can produce a million offspring a year. As a result, they have devastated lakes in Nevada and authori-

ties are trying a range of control measures in Lake Winnipeg. They clog water intake pipes, pumps and boat motors, while depleting food sources for fish and producing toxins that kill fish and birds and contaminate drinking water. Tourism and recreational properties in the Okanagan could be left high and dry because beaches could be covered with razor-sharp shells. “Our research indicates the cost could be more than $43 million a year to just manage this problem,” said Findlater. Given the eight mussel-infected boats found entering Alberta, it’s just a matter of time that a vessel slips across B.C.’s eastern or southern borders and turns Okanagan or Kalamalka lakes into ground zero. OBWB officials are clearly frustrated with being ignored by their provincial and federal counterparts. “We have been sounding the alarm for two years now, warning of the threat invasive zebra and quagga mussels pose to the Okanagan and elsewhere,” said Findlater. “While public response has been positive, and local electeds have taken notice, there’s still no concrete movement on the file.” And one has to wonder why Okanagan MLAs and MPs, including B.C.’s premier, are not leading the charge. They all understand how important lakes are to the region socially and economically, and yet they are noticeably silent. Yes, preventative measures come with a price, but trying to close the barn door once its open will be even more costly. OBWB is demanding a meeting with Environment Minister Mary Pollack during the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in September, and while the lobbying obviously needs to continue, it’s abundantly clear that senior government does not consider the Okanagan a priority. If it was, action would have been taken long ago. In the end, this entire situation takes me back to ancient history and particularly the story of Nero playing his fiddle while Rome burned around him.

The provincial government is quite predictably getting some flak from the B.C. Teachers Federation and the NDP over a plan to pay parents of children (up to 12) $40 per day for each school day missed in September – if the BCTF strike is not settled by then. While the move is certainly political, it does recognize the fact that parents are hit hard by the teachers’ strike, through extra daycare and other costs. The government saves a boatload of money – $12 million a day – as a result of the strike. It is not unreasonable to share some of those savings with those who are paying extra money in day-to-day expenses, as a result of this strike. It also should serve as a reminder to BCTF members that there will be no paycheques in September if the strike isn’t settled by then. Finance Minister Mike de Jong is right that it would do little good to legislate teachers back to work. That tactic has been used far too often in the past. There needs to be an actual agreement between the two sides, for their own good and for the good of students and parents. The bargaining system involving the two is in terrible shape, but hard negotiations could result in an agreement — if there is some genuine willingness on the part of both sides to do so. Teachers who are caught up in this dispute will have to carefully consider their actions over the next month. Many are already feeling the financial squeeze. Several weeks out of work in September will really hurt, particularly as they are not getting strike pay. Will they put pressure on the union to try and settle? The government holds almost all the cards. It will face no political pressure of any consequence, with an election three years away. Settlements with other unions will eventually force the BCTF to toe the line. The question is, how long will it take? – Black Press

Program is a slide backwards

e: Clint Field's letter in the July 11 paper. I am glad that recycling is working for you. I am only voicing my concern for the people that it is not working for, including me. I agree with what you said about other countries that just "throw it all away" and I agree with reduce, reuse and recycle! It is why I am concerned with where recycling is heading in this province. Recycling in B.C. is not 'new'. This blue box system was supposed to be an improvement on a recycling program that has been happening in B.C. since 1996. The bags worked great. But, as usual this isn't about the people of BC, it is about business and money. See http://www.news1130.com/2014/04/22/big-changes-comingto-blue-box-recycling-program/. I am afraid people are not as passionate about recycling as you are and the blue bag system was much easier and convenient for them. This box 'improvement', well, it encourages the majority to just not do the right thing. COSENS BAY ROAD In the mid 1970s a company was proposing to buy the land that is now Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park and develop it. The people of Coldstream, Vernon and area did a huge amount of work and managed to get the provincial government to buy the land for a provincial park to protect the extensive grasslands habitat and provide recreational opportunities. Grasslands are a unique ecological system that provides habitat for an enormous number of species. It represents only 5 per cent of B.C. lands and of that 5 per cent, 95 per cent is in private hands so Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park is a precious parcel of publicly owned Okanagan grasslands habitat. It is also a rare public outdoor recreation area that is used by large numbers of walkers, hikers, runners, cyclists and horseback riders every day of the year. Therefore I was upset to learn that at the request of the small group of people who access their properties through Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park the Ministry of Transportation is proposing to remove a 30-metre wide strip of land through a major section of the grasslands in the park to "make the road safer." This may make the road safer

for humans in cars and trucks but the increased traffic and speed will further endanger the animals and reptiles that the park was set aside to protect. It will also increase the danger to people walking, biking and horseback riding as the trails cross this road in a number of places. It will also provide a wide enough corridor that the residents will undoubtedly next request that hydro, water and sewer be extended to serve them and then they will need a school bus, all at a significant cost to all taxpayers. It will almost certainly also facilitate further development of the private land beyond the park increasing the pressure on the road, the park and the lake all of which are already very heavily used. I am further alarmed that it seems the Ministry of Transportation came up with this plan without first consulting either Coldstream municipality or the regional district. This is an infringement on the local authorities who have been working hard to reduce sprawl and keep costs for infrastructure under control. I understand that Parks could issue highways a Park Use Permit as alternative means of allowing work to be done on the road. It would allow work to be done to

improve the dangerous sections of the road but would not involve removing any land from the park. This would seem a way to maintain the integrity of the park and allow highways to make the road safer. Although I did not know him personally, we have a very tight community and I know I'm not the only one shaken up by this tragedy. We take our safety very seriously and don't want to be perceived wrongly in the community. Longboarding is a growing sport and Vernon is a hot spot for people from all over Western Canada. It's a great way to be outside and be with friends. I honestly hope this young man's death is not treated with prejudice and judgement. We are all thinking of the family and sending our prayers. RINGS STOLEN My mother will be 101-years-old later this month. She was married in 1932 during the Depression. My father died in 2000 and her wedding rings became her touchstone and comfort. She never removed them. Now her hands are bare. She recently spent two months at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. At some point during her stay, the rings went missing. When I asked hospital staff about this, I was told, "This happens all of the time." When I contacted the RCMP, I was told there was nothing they could do without video surveillance evidence. So the rings are gone and my mother asks about them every day. Please remember to remove valuables during hospital stays. And if there are not signs advising this, there should be. VPAG hosts creative evening Morning Star Staff

You don’t have to have the skills of a Michelangelo or a Picasso to get creative this Friday night. Artists, non-artists and aspiring artists are all invited to Take Part in Street Art, hosted by the Vernon Public Art Gallery, during the Avenue Market Friday between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. “Take Part in Street Art is a wonderful opportunity for members of the community to engage in alternative art leading up to the sixth annual Riot on the Roof,” said Dauna Kennedy Grant, executive director of VPAG. “Our goal is to create a space for emerging artists and community members to express themselves creatively in an interactive environment.”

Take Part in Street Art is an opportunity for local artists, aspiring artists, and community members to showcase their skills. The gallery is providing all supplies. To get painting just show up in your painting clothes, ready to have some fun. Since 1984, Special Olympics BC has been providing sports programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities in Vernon. “Over the years we have developed a sport program for all ages and abilities. We provide 14 sports to over 120 athletes,” said Noelle Typusiak, a member of the SOBC-Vernon board. “There is something for everyone, from the popular bowling and soccer to powerlifting and skiing. “It’s all possible because of

the incredible commitment of our volunteers who coach and manage our charity, and generous financial support from the community.” A special celebration will take place during registration night and this event is always highly anticipated by all athletes. “Those events give them a sense of belonging and pride to represent a well-known sports organization,” said Doris Linemayr, local coordinator for SOBC-Vernon. “During our training sessions and in

competitions they build up their self esteem which reflects into their social life with family and friends. The impact is amazing, we see it every day.” Special Olympics BC Vernon provides high-quality sports program for individuals of all ages with intellectual disabilities. The society strives to enrich lives, and celebrates personal achievement through positive sport experiences. The Vernon local is always looking for new athletes to join their program, with a great selection of sports for children,

youth and adults of all ages. Let’s face it. Eating with young children can be stressful, especially at dinner time. Even though I know the spilling, throwing food, picky eating and crankiness are all normal they are hard to face each evening. Knowing the many benefits that eating together offers my toddler — from learning more vocabulary to accepting new foods — gives me the push to continue making family dinners a priority in my home. Nonetheless, I recently asked myself how we can make our family mealtimes a happier time. The following tips really are key. Ensure the focus for eating together is simply to enjoy each other’s company. So much stress is lifted when I let go of

being concerned about how much or what my son will eat. Plan for early dinners. On work nights if dinner is running late I find it helpful to offer my son a light pre-dinner snack to prevent him from becoming over-hungry. Offer new foods along with familiar, loved foods. By doing this it helps my son feel comfortable at meal times. Don’t let food refusal get under your skin. Once the food is served I remove all emotional investment for the creation of the meal, and focus on my own eating, not my toddler’s. It is OK if my son does not want to eat. Coaxing or bribing children to eat certain foods or amounts does not help, in fact it can cause children to eat less and take longer to accept new foods.

Enjoy pleasant conversation. We keep the conversation light and involve our toddler. Interestingly, by doing this it has helped decrease the amount of food that is thrown! Keep distractions at a minimum. At mealtimes we turn off the TV, cell phones, iPads, and put away toys (or hide them out of site, if needed). Expect a mess. We keep cloths handy to catch large spills and wait until the meal is over to pick up food that has been dropped on the floor. Creating happy meal times is worth the effort. t’s a good thing to realize how blessed we are to live in this amazing and beautiful part of the province, especially when it comes to the abundance of locally grown fruits and vegetables available. Cherries, apricots and raspberries are on their way out now, but peaches, pears, plums, melons of all sorts, and apples are just coming in from local farmers. Right now fresh corn, a huge variety of peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and countless other locally grown vegetables are available from local markets in the area. There is no end to the fruits and veggies you can Cathi Litzenberger throw into a salad so be creative. Salsas can be super fresh right now with homegrown corn, tomatoes, peppers, green onions, or anything that strikes your fancy. Today’s salsa dish is a great one for putting on your tacos and you can make a seriously awesome meal in a very short time by just grilling some meat or fish and serving on taco shells. Now is the time to eat fresh. Peaches & Pepper Carpaccio Salad with Corn and Red Quinoa (Recipe from Massimo Capra) Roasted peppers: red, yellow and green, skinned and seeded 2 firm peaches, julienned ½ red onion, julienned

½ cup celery heart, julienned ½ cup peaches & cream corn kernels, roasted ½ cup red quinoa, cooked Salt & pepper to taste 2 Tbsp. lime juice White balsamic vinegar Olive oil to taste 2 Tbsp. toasted almonds, crushed 1 bunch of cilantro, chopped To roast pepper: cut in half and place under broiler at least 10 inches from element, until skin is blackened. Remove, cool and skins will easily peel off. Place the peaches, red onions, celery, corn and quinoa in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper and a dousing of lime juice, mix well then add a little white balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Set aside for 10 minutes or so. Place one colour each of the peppers flat onto plates and leave room in the centre to add the peach salad. Sprinkle with toasted almonds, a drizzle more of olive oil and a little cilantro. Delicious! Fresh Corn and Peach Salsa 3 medium peaches, ripe but firm, peeled and diced 1 cup corn, raw and removed from ear 1 large tomato, diced 2 green onions, thinly sliced 2 jalapeno peppers, diced (optional) 6 basil leaves, chopped Juice of 1 lemon Salt and pepper to taste Combine all ingredients and mix well. Best when made 2 hours in advance to allow flavours to come together. Refrigerate leftovers.

OTTAWA – Cancer isn’t always a matter of life and death anymore – today, an increasing number of Canadians are living with cancer as a chronic condition. “The fact is, 63 per cent of Canadian cancer patients live longer than five years after diagnosis, and if a cancer patient survives past one year, that number rises to 81 per cent,” said Jackie Manthorne, president and CEO of Canadian Cancer Survivor Network (CCSN). “This requires a huge shift in the way we treat cancer patients. We need to make sure that people are aware of this change, and that our system adapts to meet the long-term needs of people throughout their cancer journey.” And while survival rates are improving, Canadians currently think that only 47 per cent of cancer patients survive longer than five years, according to a new survey commissioned by CCSN, demonstrating that Canadians are less aware of cancer as a chronic condition. While there are still many cancers that strike quickly and metastasize or have poor survival rates, for many, cancer is becoming a chronic condition that requires ongoing treatment and support to deal with side effects ranging from nausea, pain and low immunity to bone loss, heart disease and arthritis. “The cancer treatment journey is radically different today from what it was even 15 years ago. Therapeutic advances have resulted in vastly improved survival rates for many forms of cancer and in many cases, we hope to treat patients with the intent of cure,” said Dr. Sandy Sehdev, medical oncologist at William Osler Health Centre in Brampton, Ont. “While this is promising, we need to consider all that survivorship encompasses to address the long-term needs of people who have had cancer.” While the CCSN survey showed that 70 per cent of Canadians either don’t know how long the side effects last or think they only last a few days, weeks or months, these side effects can last for years and have a significant impact on a patient’s quality of life. “I was first diagnosed with prostate cancer nearly 15 years ago. My initial treatment was six months of hormone therapy, and 38 rounds of radiation. But that wasn’t the end of my treatment — I needed hormone shots for five years after that, and I’m still

experiencing side effects now, including arthritis,” said Jim Dorsey, a prostate cancer survivor living in Brampton. “I’m lucky that I’ve had coverage for my medications. I can’t imagine what happens to patients who don’t have that support.” In addition to dealing with the condition itself, patients often have to worry about whether or not treatment for these side effects and conditions are covered by their provincial health plans, as access to and coverage for medications frequently differs from province to province. Not surprisingly, the majority of Canadians believe that a patient should be spared financial burden, with 85 per cent of Canadians believing that medicines to treat the side effects of cancer should be publicly covered by the provinces. “Sixty-six per cent of Canadians believe a cure for cancer will be found within a generation,” said Manthorne. “But until that time, we need to continue to provide support for patients throughout their cancer journey — from diagnosis through post-treatment.”

the park. “We will be protecting Kal Park and we are definitely against any land being taken out of the park to widen the road and add Hydro,” wrote society president Val Buchanan on its website, www.kalamalkapark.ca. The website is also where the online petition can be found. As of Tuesday morning, more than 550 signatures had been garnered.

In a press release on its website, the society feels removal of this right of way would remove land from Kal Park and the jurisdiction of B.C. Parks. “It would essentially divide Kal Park into two sections,” states the release. In its release, the society raises eight concerns about the ministry application. They range from saying the removal of land from parks is a

step back as people want more parkland, not less, to adding a paved road would be a “death trap for the endangered Pacific rattlesnake,” to adding more vehicles and that taxpayers would foot a large part of the bill. The society says its primary purpose “is to work to preserve the environmental integrity of Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park in perpetuity for the benefit of the general public.”

Alliance launches lawsuit Morning Star Staff

The Okanagan Nation Alliance has filed legal action challenging the province’s treaty process. “This lawsuit should come as no surprise to the province,” said Grand Chief Stewart Phillip. “The British Columbia Treaty Process is a broken system that fails to recognize established legal principles, traditional protocols and our title and rights. By this lawsuit, we intend to put the province’s pattern of dishonourable and unlawful conduct before the court.” The ONA’s legal action is the result of the province’s decision to sign an Incremental Treaty Agreement with the Ktunaxa Nation Council to transfer approximately 241 hectares of land near Nakusp in the Arrow Lakes area as part of an early transfer of lands that will form part of a final treaty. The ONA says the province did not consult with them before singing the agreement, despite the fact that the area includes important village sites, hunting grounds and cultural heritage sites for the ONA communities and

their members. The ONA made the decision to file the legal action after attempting over a year to resolve the issue directly with the province. “We offered the province a chance to rectify the situation through a process of collaborative, respectful engagement, but the province rejected this path,” said Phillip. “The province has shown us that it is not serious about resolving this issue, so we are taking action in court to protect our title and rights for our people and communities.” The ONA is made up of seven First Nations in B.C.: the Lower Similkameen Band, Okanagan Indian Band, Osoyoos Indian Band, Penticton Band, Upper Nicola Band, Upper Similkameen Band and Westbank First Nation, as well as the Colville Confederated Tribes of the United States. The communities of the ONA include thousands of members who are Sinixt descendants who historically lived in the Arrow Lakes area.

A blizzard has been forecast for Thursday, and it promises to be a sweet one. Participating Dairy Queen restaurants across B.C. will be serving fans Blizzard Treats for the 12th annual Miracle Treat Day in support of Children’s Miracle Network. Full proceeds from every Blizzard Treat sold in B.C. support B.C. Children’s Hospital, one of 14 children’s hospitals across Canada supported by Children’s Miracle Network. In 2013, Dairy Queen locations throughout British Columbia raised over $379,000 for B.C. Children’s Hospital. Dairy Queen Canada’s national fundraising goal for this year is $3.2 million. Tony Lourenco, owner of Vancouver’s Fraser Street Dairy Queen, is also father to teen Lindsey Lourenco, a B.C. Children’s Hospital patient who passed away in March 2013 after a five-year battle with cancer. “B.C. Children’s Hospital is very close to our family’s heart, and we are proud to be a part of Miracle Treat Day every summer,” he said. “We encourage everyone to enjoy a Blizzard Treat on Thursday in support of B.C.’s kids.” This year marks the 30th anniversary of the partnership between Dairy Queen and Children’s Miracle Network. Since the partnership began in 1984, Dairy Queen has become a top contributor to Children’s Miracle Network with $100 million raised to date in support of sick and injured children across North America. Vernon cadet earns honour Morning Star Staff

A Vernon youth has been recognized. Steven Anderson, an air cadet with the 223 Squadron, has received a most improved cadet award for his achievements on his second summer training course in Metchosin. Anderson completed the basic drill and ceremonial course with 49 other cadets. They learned how to work together as a team and take a leadership role, as well as drill and ceremony skills. “I originally thought this course was all about drill,” said Anderson, 15. “But I had fun, and now I want to take the advanced-level course next year. I had to lead my team of eight through a task, where we had to move a small box about 10 meters, but we were

It was Saturday April 26, 2003. In Ballroom #3 there was a charity bachelor auction to benefit a camp for local hearing impaired children. I owned a pet sitting business and had a 65 year old client who was a widow with an incredible sense of adventure and humour. Mrs. M thought this might be a good way to meet a new companion and I thought it would be a great source of entertainment. Together with two girlfriends who were vet assistants we headed out for the evening. And what an evening it was! Mrs. M got the party started when she won the bid on one of the first bachelors on the block. For $50 spent she received a rose, a date for the rest of the evening and a gift certificate at a local restaurant to share with her bachelor, if they both chose to see each other a second time. Mrs. M was then bound and determined that I also needed a companion especially as I was recently divorced. Having no desire to “go there” I was content to watch the action and share a lot of laughs with my friends. That was until the second last bachelor of the auction made his appearance on the cat walk and as cheesy as it sounds, it was love at first sight. After a heated bidding war for which I had to borrow the cash from my girlfriends to pay, I won bachelor #40! We immediately hit if off and had our first date the very next morning for breakfast. Enderby off Mabel Lake Road. It was during a car ride to a meeting when Okanagan Historical Society member Robert Dale suggested the falls be named in honour of local pioneer, school-

teacher and historian Isobel Simard. Fellow members Bob and Joani Cowan and Jessie Anne Gamble quickly agreed and the group managed to get support from the OHS to proceed.

Bob Cowan, also chair of the Enderby and District Heritage Commission, took the project under his wing and did the legwork of garnering community support. That support prompted the EDHC to lobby the provincial government for a name change, which was granted in 2010. Cowan received funds from Area F director Jackie Pearase to create a sign for the falls, designed by Pure Graphics and printed by Empire Reproductions in Enderby. Pearase also provided funds to the Kingfisher Community Society to build a frame and support for the sign so it could be erected on land beneath the falls donated by resident Helmuth Koch. James Latchko, Wayne Caswell, Harry Flath and Murray MacDonald designed, created and mounted the framed sign last fall. To commemorate the thought, time and effort that went into the sign, a photo for the local history book underway was snapped with EDHC chair Bob Cowan, Area F director Jackie Pearase, OHS member Robert Dale and Kingfisher Community Society president Murray MacDonald. People are reminded that there is currently no access to Isobel Falls from Mabel Lake Road.

Brett Hawrys turned up the heat in the Western Canadian lacrosse championship and helped guide the Coquitlam Adanacs to their seventh Minto Cup appearance. The Adanacs downed the Alberta champion Calgary Mountaineers 3-1 in the best-of-five Western final at the Coquitlam Sports Centre. Hawrys registered a goal in the first two games, and two goals in Saturday’s Game 3, a 9-8 loss. The Adanacs, who won the fourth game 7-6 Sunday, will take on the Eastern champion Six Nations Arrows of Hagersville, Ont. in the Junior A Minto Cup. The Arrows swept the Whitby Warriors in the Ontario Junior A Lacrosse League final for their fourth straight Ontario championship. Hawrys and the Adanacs edged the New Westminster Salmonbellies 4-3 in the best-of-seven B.C. Junior A championship. In 10 B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League playoff games, Hawrys pulled six goals and 11 points. The 2011 Thompson Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League Rookie of the Year is enjoying his first playoff run with the yellow and purple. He spent two seasons with the Nanaimo Timbermen before getting dealt to the Adanacs prior to the playoffs. He amassed 39 goals and 67 points in 17 games this year. In 2013, he supplied 47 goals and 76 points in his first season of with the T-Men. The Adanacs won the national in 2010 and finished second five times. The Arrows won the Minto in 1992 and 2007, and have finished second three times. The two teams met during the 1992 championships with the Arrows defeating the Adanacs in seven games. The Minto Cup begins Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre. Game 2 goes Sunday night. All games start at 8 p.m.

Vernon Kal Tire brushed back Lake Country Fire Ballers 2-1 in Kelowna Men’s 35+ Soccer League action Monday night at Marshall Field #2. The tiremen improved to 11-4 with one game left in the regular season. Lake Country dipped to 7-7-1. Kal Tire’s first goal came when Geoff Straight started a run up the left side, beat a defender and then hit Jesse Knight, who returned the ball. Straight found Knight again and he repeated the return deep in the zone. Straight found returning forward Kris Yargeau, who had an easy one-time into the back of the net. In the second half, Straight danced around a couple of defenders and made a great move to free up for an easy finish. Lake Country came back by flooding the 18-yard box and having an open man who put the ball in the net. Both teams had a couple of chances in the final 25 minutes. Coach and former all-star keeper Kai Tolpinrud praised the performance of current keeper Chris Bader. Kal Tire finishes against Freeport Industries at Mission Park Monday night.

I agree with that. However, the word “except” applies to this deal. What should West lead against four hearts? East opened with a weak two-bid, showing a respectable six-card suit and 6-10 high-card points. Then, after South overcalled three hearts, West raised spades, applying the Law of Total Tricks. With nine trumps, bid to the ninetrick level. However, in this instance, it was perhaps not

the best choice. It effectively pushed North into bidding four hearts. And if West had then bid four spades, he would have given the opponents a fielder’s choice -- double or bid higher. Here, though, he allowed the prevailing vulnerability to keep him quiet. There was a strong case for jumping straight to four spades over three hearts, to pressure North. And pressured him it would have. He might well have gone to five hearts. Now to West’s lead. It is normal to select partner’s suit -- except when you have an ace-king holding in an unbid side suit. Here, West should definitely lead the club ace. East will signal with the eight, starting a

high-low (an echo) with his doubleton. West will cash the club king and lead a third round. East will ruff it and the diamond ace will defeat the contract. Note that after a spade lead, declarer will ruff his low spades in the dummy, draw trumps and lose only three tricks.

Leslie was born in Nakusp, B.C. on September 30, 1934. He spent his youth in dgewood, aƩending school in /nonoaklin Valley, Edgewood, Fauquier and Needles. He tried various ũobs in mechanics and millwork in Nelson and the Cariboo but they did not appeal to him so he went north in 1958 and found work at Cassiar and on the Alaska Highway. While there, he found his preferred work as a Heavy Equipment Operator. /n 1964 he returned to work in the Kootenays as a crane operator on the Duncan and Kennylside Dam construcƟon. He worked on the construcƟon of the Skookumchuk pulp mill, Kaisar Coal Dine, Fording River Coal Dine, Kootenay Canal Power Plant., and building of the power line from Dica Creek to DerriƩ. /n 1976 he moved to Fort DcDurray, Alberta and worked on various construcƟon sites there unƟl his reƟrement in 1999. AŌer reƟrement, Les Θ his wife Jane moved to Fauquier to be caregivers for Jane͛s parents, Fred Θ /da Shiell. Leslie was a member of the /nternaƟonal hnion of OperaƟng Engineers, Įrst with Local 115 (B.C.) and then with Local 955 ( Alberta). He received a Life Dembership from Local 955 in 2009 when he received recogniƟon for 50 zears of Dembership. He served as Shop Steward for many years. Family was a very important part of Les’ life and he enjoyed helping with Boy Scouts and was always interested in aƩending school events with his children. Les was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch η203, Edgewood for 37zears and served on the EǆecuƟve for several years. Leslie is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Jane (Shiell), son Adrian, and daughter JeaneƩe (Bruce) Johnson, granddaughter Amanda and grandson Christopher, sister Shirley Barber of North Vancouver and brother Donte from hnionville, Ontario, brother-in-law Jim Shiell, two nieces and four nephews. He was predeceased by his father Harold in 1973, mother Yueenie in 1976 and brother Richard in 2012. CremaƟon was entrusted to Vernon Funeral Home. /nterment will be arranged by family at a later date. A CelebraƟon of Leslie’s life will he held at the Edgewood Legion Hall on August 16 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Gordon Hiebert, Element Eco-Design co-owner, will provide an overview of permaculture design and discuss the plants chosen for Xerindipity’s permaculture plot. He will also discuss how versatile and simple permaculture design is, and how it can be applied to create abundant, organic edible landscapes, localized economies, resilient communities and more.
